John, some tips on fly casting heavy rods and heavy leader. Patience is a virtue here. It seems you may be rushing your motion and not allowing the rod to build load to essentially launch your fly into the water. Be patient on your backcast especially and allow time for the fly to come well behind you and build load through the air before sending it forward. An 11 to 2 motion is all you need if you're patient enough to let the loops unfold. A good way to practice this is to backcast and let your line fall all the way into the water and right as your fly is about to touch, do your forward cast. This will start to connect the dots on the feel for the motion. Heavy flies and heavy line is very difficult and not like trout fishing at all, it takes some trial and error to get the feel for the technique and you are right there, keep trying it is so rewarding!!!
Another note is utilizing your off-hand when fly casting with these heavy rods. Pulling the line in a snapping motion down and towards your left hip will significantly increase the power and distance in both your forward and back casts. Yank the line down as the fly is changing direction and essentially *shoot* the line in the direction you are casting. This motion coupled with some patience in your casting motion will yield some very nice results I hope. Try it out and reach out with any questions I would love to see you succeed. Fly fishing for picky bass and sinking lines on rips is some of my favorite striper fishing for sure!
I learned all of this from Lefty Kreh and my grandfather down here in Maryland. Back in the day he used to come shad fish for Hickory and Americans on the Susquehanna river in the Northern Chesapeake and my grandfather used to have coffee with him and they would be some of the only fly fishermen amongst all the spin gear users. I met him a few times when I was young, he was and still is a legend for sure. Taught me a lot about the techniques of fly fishing big water.
Those picky bass seem to like it fast on the surface as well. In the cape and around Nantucket we would use hookless Super Spook Jr. as a teaser and then have another guy on the bow cast down the line with the fishes attention to help get a bass to pick your fly out of the thousands of baits in the water. Its a lot of fun and can be a game changer for picky fish (need a buddy on the boat though!)
Best of luck John and I absolutely love your channel! Tight lines!
Thanks for all of that!!
John. I appreciate how you reiterate your technique as you go. It helps reinforce what I am trying to learn. Thanks!
"Put that damn fly rod away" that's funny! I can hear myself saying the same thing when I see them feeding like that. I am sure you will figure fly fishing out John
😊😅
we used to say when the cider worm hatched you couldn't match up to it, so for a few weeks fishing was tough
My 2 cents ,., Turn your head and Watch your line on your back cast. Stop your back cast at 1 o clock and feel the rod load fully. then and only then start forward. It’s one fluid motion .. back , stop. , rod loads then forward . Thanks for all the great videos !!!!! 🙂🙂🙂🙂
Really good information on catching Stripers on the bottom and suspended near and on surface. That rip can get alarming in a 16' boat. Great video again!
John wasn't moving the fly fast enough. You gotta tuck your rod under your armpit and strip (retrieve) with both hands, hand-over-hand. When the fish strikes, keep stripping to set the hook.
Beautiful sunrise and yes get a good fly to the fish and you're in. My fly rod skills also need a little work. However rarely do I get backlash on my Calcutta these days 😉
think about learning to haul with the left hand, it will straighten out that fly line/leader and add 10 foot to your cast.
Great video John🎣
John...You need to develop a camouflage rod so all those other boaters can't see you bowed up on every cast!
Now you talked me into ordering the mossy mullet and weighted hooks from salt strong.
John, you are a much better striper fisherman then most. We were out yesterday, conditions weren't as great as far as surface goes but the birds were definitely out in force. Stripers were not at the surface like this video but they were definitely there. Tried this setup and did not get one. Tried to see if they were at different depths using bucktails, diamond jigging etc. Nothing. At least 10-12 boats and we only saw one guy catching but he looked like he was long lining. Also we had a lot of guys just blowing up into the spot where the fish were. You are always a lot better at cruising into the spot then most.
Was that Jessups? It can get crowded on weekends. I try to fish the outskirts when it makes sense.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing Yes, Saturday was the only good weather day and the fog and rain rolled in when I was further east. Moved over and the "race" was on as they say
YAY ON THE FLY ROD!! Call Orvis in Carle Place-they do casting lessons. One hour and you’ll improve so much. I am sure you also know some “fly guys” who can give you a lesson too.
SO excited for your new journey!!
Love salty fly fishing.
“Put the dam fly rod away 😂👍
Try the Rio Outbound Short intermediate. Make sure to get the cold water line. It Is like cheating. You will be casting 80 to 100 ft in an hour! It's also very good in the wind.
I got Rio floating cold with the striper on it. I asked some guys I know and they said floating for what I do.
John, keep the fly rod out!!! You get them! Like someone else commented, I'm sure you know a ton of fly guy's that could give you lesson's, or I'm sure you could get Tom Rosenbaur from Orvis out on your boat!!! Same as with spin fishing, retrival speed, fly size and profile all play important roles.
Have you heard anything about weakfish. Are they gone again?
It's looking like one of the biggest reasons why they're hitting the soft plastic is because of the color. Olivey colors have been catching stripers this spring, along with darker mossy greens.
I know people are going to say I'm a dope, but I am tired of striper fishing. I live on the Delaware River in jersey their here but I would love to get on the fluke. I'm targeting them this year, and I'm ready . The rain and temp have been hurting the bite. I want a fluke on the skinner jig and bounce.
John, I thought about you this wknd while on the water. I thought to myself, what would John do? What would he throw (for speckle /reds).
Fly ride tip in the water John. Gives you better line control.
Not sure why you think your casting sucks. You’re putting it right where the fish are. It may not be pretty but you’re getting it where they are.
Hmm. You could put some fish juice on the fly. (That counts, right?)
Put the rod tip in the water! Will help you a lot
How?
@@johnrickards1908 ,
It will be a 1-1 connection between the fly and the strip.
Otherwise a lot of the strip gets wasted skipping the slack fly line (between the rod tip and the water side to side
That's a great explanation to an equally great question.
@@MrSurfanglerI was gonna say it if someone else didn’t haha
@@JohnSkinnerFishing ,
Np always happy to share.
John, What made you decide to throw a bucktail in the rip as opposed to jigging the flutter spoon, I see it was on the boat.
I haven't done much on flutter spoons on that part of the rip. Excellent on bucktails.
I saw your rods the other day at public lands in Melville and just let me say you made some really nice looking rods i like them a lot and I also saw Josh from j&h tackle too at public lands
Thanks. I just come up with the action and guide layout. Josh makes them pretty and crazy durable.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing I gotta get one I just don’t know which one I want first I really like your surf rod too I just wish you guys would make the 10 foot and a two-piece in a 7030 split of course
7:34 swimming by
I remember a guide who took me out of Everglades City for tarpon and snook - when I asked him about possible fly casting, he said: “Do you want to go whoosh, whoosh, whoosh, or do you want to catch fish?” HA! That said, it is pretty fun to hook up with a striper on a fly rod!
Stripers are great fun on the fly. So are bluefish. Try an intermediate line
You could have put one of your Mossy's at the end of the fly line, match the hatch.
Did you use the flutter spoon at all?
At 7:36 anyone else see the fish swim by the boat when he stops or am I seeing things lol
Change up your retrieve?
How many fish did you get on that 1 lure
John. That looks like a cinder worm hatch. Were you tossing cinder worm patterns? During a worm hatch nothing else will work.
No worms - small bay anchovies.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing Argh!! Even tougher.
Waiting for weakfish video
I found myself a 19ft Hydra Sport CC really cheap. The motor needs a fuel pump and normal old boat stuff. It's a 98 and i plan on just waiting to the off season this year and want to put a new motor on it. I unfortunately have to lose my old 16 StarCraft to make room. I literally can't give it away 😂. Boat trailer and a motor 😂. Basically needs steering
If that starcraft doesn't leak bad you should have no problem unloading it on craigs List or Amazon Marketplace. I drove all the way to Mass. from eastern LI to get my Grumman aluminum.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing I believe only 2 rivets are loose. I honestly wish I had the space cause I love that hull
Another inspiring day out there, thanks, John!
What was the tide doing for that last topwater action at the end?
End of flood.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing Thank you, John.
So are you tied direct from braid to the weighted hook? No leader.
This video shows the rigging and loop knot: th-cam.com/video/AYTga8nAp68/w-d-xo.html
Hey John, great stuff as always. So as a small, soft plastic junkie I have a question... In open water like that why the weedless weighted hook? I know to fish those (Texas rigged) around weeds and debris, but in open water like that do you suppose a jighead would work just as good ? Is the Mossy Mullet designed to work on an offset specifically?
Awesome question. It has nothing to do with being weedless. A regular jighead is nose-heavy. The weight is shifted back on a swimbait hook giving it a more balanced weighting and a more natural swim. Amazingly I tried these things on regular jigheads when my brother and I first encountered the surface fish and they ignored it. I showed that on that video. th-cam.com/video/MYGtpq8pntY/w-d-xo.html
@@JohnSkinnerFishing Wow! That makes perfect sense. Never occurred to me that a jighead would swim different than a shank weighted hook, but that how often I have used weighted hooks. Thanks.
Not the best caster but my sense is, if it's falling in a heap you are not allowing the back cast to fully "load" so the overall loop when you go forward is loose, making it pile vs. straighten out. Or, fly is weighted and leader is really light/long?
Thanks for that. It's about 10 feet of 40, then 30# fluoro for the leader. The fly was small and light - not weighted.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing Gotcha. I'm mainly used to casting 4-6 wts for freshwater (I do have an 8 and 10 wt, just have not used it much). The leaders I use are always tapered which again I think allows it to roll out. Maybe shorten overall leader? Some folks who cast the larger SW outfits would probably give more advice.
Any idea on when the Mullet lure will get back into stock ?? Looking to purchase but it says unavailable !
I just tried this link and was able to add it to cart: bit.ly/MyCustomPaddletail
@@JohnSkinnerFishing Awesome thank you !!!! Cheers great videos and knowledge tight lines !
i'll give ya a couple tips the best i can without actually being there next to you...keep the rod tip pointed down when retrieving your fly, keep it just above the water or even slightly under the surface is fine. Now your casting...you need you come to a firm stop (im sure you've heard the term 10oclock-2oclock) and let the fly line straighten out before you start the forward casting motion. From what i can tell you are sort of limp arming-it...Saltwater rods that are fast action take some umph to load. You dont have to be super aggressive but you need to generate some line speed. Dont baby the cast, let her eat. This is a little different than casting for trout in a small stream...Last thing is look up a video on how to double-haul. In the salt you need to use your left hand to create a pulley to generate line speed. You arent going to gain any distance by trying to cast the rod, you need to use the rod as a lever and pull the line with your left hand to shoot it out there. Its very counter intuitive if you are used to spin fishing....You'll get the hang of it. Tight lines
Thanks for all of that!
are you using Doctor Juice?
Not needed for this.
"I know my casting sucks" fucking coulda fooled me 😂 give yourself some credit. If i tried to use a fly rod, people would think i was special needs.
Hate to say it but you could throw the mossy mullet on the flyrod. I would just nose hook it on no 1 hook. Something like that.
I wondered about that. Thanks! I wonder if that breaks some sort of fly fishing "rule".
@@JohnSkinnerFishing Yes it probably does, but don't worry about it. Also, in general, if fish refuse a fly, go smaller. Those fish might have taken something an inch or two long.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing Rules are meant to be broken!!
It definitely breaks the rules!!! 😉👍
That's it then. I don't want the fly police after me.
