  • Motorola officially announced the Motorola One and Motorola One Power at IFA 2018, a pair of mid-range Android One phones that offer a sleek, budget-friendly spin on Apple’s iPhone X design. But they’ll only be available in Europe, Latin America, and Asia - sorry, U.S. customers.

    There's a lot wrong here with this preview and it seems that The Verge didn't look at the market for midrange phones for quite a while. These are a few points about what's wrong with the information presented here:
    1. The Snapdragon 625 is not 'in line with the market'. It's an old soc that isn't acceptable to use anymore because it's three years old and has had two upgrades already. I wonder if Lenovo will bump against the limits with the promised upgrade to Android Q, which might not be supported on this 2015 hardware
    2. Android One is pretty common at this price range. Nokia has it on all phones, Xiaomi has it on a few phones and there are more. Updates promised for three years is also normal with Samsung being the only exception. Even Huawei pledged to keep midrange phones up to date and so had Lenovo with their Moto G6 phones.
    3. A notch is no feature, it's a necessary evil. Also: why is it so big when there's no infrared hardware like on iPhone X?
    4. The Motorola One isn't exactly cheap over here in Europe: it's more expensive than the more powerful, better equipped Moto G6 Plus, from the same company.
    All in all, I expect a preview to point out these things. I know for a fact The Verge is a legit journalistic enterprise, but previews like this can fuel a suspicion that Motorola's bought positive coverage. That's not possible at The Verge, I know, but a lot of people know what I know about the smartphone market and the state of midrange phones at this point and can point out where this preview lacks insight.

    • @anthonyt425
      @anthonyt425 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The 625 has been out for 2 years, but yeah, it's been out for too long now and needs to retire. In regards to this hands on putting Moto in a positive light, I think it'd be interesting to see the competition just to show how average Moto offerings are. Particularly with phones like the Xiamio Mi A2 or Poco F1.

      Francisco, thanks for bringing that up, You're definitely going to want to get a screen protector, the screen is not as good as flagships and even most budget devices, it gets scratched by a lot of things.

    PSA: $300-350 is not budget. It's mid-range. $100 phones are budget. That's all.

      @anthonyt425 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Completely agree. I think the rapid increase in phones has seen a disoriented perception in pricing. It's almost like how 1+ is a great value despite being over $500 now.

      Moto C, an LTE phone for $89. That's budget. Unless you don't think it's part of the smartphone market to fit your definition. a.co/d/g7vJrGD

    The reason I searched this phone is that I wanted to ask why? why the notch yet there's a slight chin. The point is to eliminate the bezels but notch is supposed to house the camera... Motorola, what's on your mind? "lenovo"? srsly tho... take Motorola seriously.

    Finally, Nokia and Motorola has caved in for the notch. Apple just ruined the budget Android market with a single phone and Samsung isn't working for it.

    the thing about android notches is they don't need a notch. They are just mimicking the iPhone to boost sales which is sad. They have a notch and a HUGE BOTTOM BEZLE which makes no sense and looks ugly.
