      Hi indi- the practice is called Johar. In old days women (belonging to particular tribe/region) follow Johar. When the husband dies , the wife gives her life away. But for doing that wife has to take approval from husband. And I repeat this practice is not followed by everyone. The bad guy lusts the queen and in the process he kills the king and she chooses Johar. She prefers dying rather than getting captured and spending rest of the life with this fellow.

    So much negativity and people calling it suicide. This queen is way more than human being for Indian women. She is respected as a Goddess in India. Instead of becoming slave, she with all 16000 women burnt themselves. This needed lot of courage and strong determination. Which we Indian people think is only done by Goddess.

    Your guess is absolutely right. Rani padmavati loved her husband so much that she never wanted any othe man to look at her. This was the case with raja ratan Singh too.. And for that reason, there were only ladies inside the main Fort where rani lived. The soldiers were kept at different places. The fort is so large, that khilji could not reach to rani padmini. /padmavati (her actual name). And when the news arrives that King is dead, she sacrificed her life, burnt herself along with all those 16000 women. This sacrifice is termed jouhar.

    Padmini, also known as Padmavati, was a 13th-14th century Rani (queen) of the Mewar kingdom of present-day India. Several medieval texts mention her, although these versions are disparate and many modern historians question the extent of overall authenticity.
    The Jayasi text describes her story as follows: Padmavati was an exceptionally beautiful princess of the Sinhalese kingdom (in Sri Lanka).[a] Ratan Sen, the Rajput ruler of Chittor Fort, heard about her beauty from a talking parrot named Hiraman. After an adventurous quest, he won her hand in marriage and brought her to Chittor. Ratan Sen was captured and imprisoned by Alauddin Khalji, the Sultan of Delhi. While Ratan Sen was in prison, the king of Kumbhalner Devapal became enamoured with Padmavati's beauty and proposed to marry her. Ratan Sen returned to Chittor and entered into a duel with Devapal, in which both died. Alauddin Khalji laid siege to Chittor to obtain Padmavati. Facing a defeat against Khalji, before Chittor was captured, she and her companions committed Jauhar (self-immolation) thereby defeating Khalji's aim and protecting their honour. Coupled to the Jauhar, the Rajput men died fighting on the battlefield.
    Many other written and oral tradition versions of her life exist in Hindu and Jain traditions. These versions differ from the Sufi poet Jayasi's version. For example, Rani Padmini's husband Ratan Sen dies fighting the siege of Alauddin Khalji, and thereafter she leads a jauhar. In these versions, she is characterised as a Hindu Rajput queen, who defended her honour against a Muslim invader. Over the years she came to be seen as a historical figure and appeared in several novels, plays, television serials and movies.
    Jai Bhawani.

And India is coming because we are being taught this everytime that nothing is more than our dignity by this type of history that they have made. I’ve seen a lot of people calling Jauhar ‘patriarchal’ (looking at you, Swara Bhaskar) but what they fail to realise is that Jauhar was accompanied by Saka. When defeat was imminent, Rajput men charged into battle, for one last time, expecting certain death. Meanwhile, the Rajput women would self immolate to escape from being paraded as sex slaves of invading maniacs. This just shows they placed their values and virtues higher than their lives and I think that’s beautiful ❤️

    • @msa8370
      @msa8370 3 ปีที่แล้ว +140

      I dont know how was that patriarchal, these women took charge and said 'I value myself as a human being' and refused to be sold into sexual slavery. They held the dignity of being a woman in high regard, they refused to be raped and assaulted. They valued themselves too much to have themselves be treated so brutally so they took charge.

  • @LovelyLies16

    The movie was based on the legend of Padmavati, a Rajput queen who is known for her final act of Jauhar. This is is when women, after their people or husbands have been defeated in battle, decide to die on their own terms by mass self-immolation. Burning themselves alive rather than face rape and enslavement by their enemies and humiliated. (I also read how, in this time era, even a woman's dead body would be raped and abused. So they specifically burned themselves to death to leave their enemy NOTHING. Just an empty kingdom or fortress at the most.)
    It's largely debated whether or not Padmavati existed in real life, although many believe she was just an epic Indian legend. She's still become a famous historical figure for deciding to end her life rather than submit to a man who just wanted her to become his pretty possession and own her as property. (As the legend says Padmavati was EXTREMELY beautiful and a unique queen because of so; some versions of the story even say this guy invaded her kingdom specifically to capture her for himself. She absolutely refused to give him what he wanted and chose to die to ensure he didn't get his spoils of war.)
    But yes, this final scene got me very emotional; especially seeing the various women and girls of all ages facing their death with dignity. Seeing the little girl who can't be more than 12 years old being comforted by her pregnant mother as she stared at the fire ahead of her got me like a gut punch. And the elderly women who have lived this long and choosing to end their lives like this rather than enslavement and abuse. This story has gotten much fame for being about female empowerment; women who would rather die with honor than become enslaved, abused, and basically owned.
