It wasn't a piece of outdoor power equipment but right before the winter of 1997/98 set in my wife told me to put the carpet shampooer out on the back porch. The porch was enclosed but not heated. I began to calmly tell her that we couldn't keep it on the back porch because the water that could not be drained out of the pump would freeze and bust the pump. I got about half a syllable out when she interrupted me, screaming like a banshee at the top of her lungs that she wanted it on the back porch. I promptly stored the carpet shampooer right where she wanted it, vowing to myself that I'll be damned if I'm buying another one. Later the following spring after the divorce before she moved out l noticed the puddle of water under the carpet shampooer. Yeah, I let her move it to her new house to find out for herself that it would no longer work.
Yay for you brother. My unit is defective too. Problem is. Cost too much to scrap. Thinking about WD 40. Apply it too where all the noise is coming from, and see if it doesn't quiet it down a little.
@@timothybyrom5560I think most of them are defective from the factory. Apparently at many factories. Different brands and all. For the love of god, I wish he could help us get some non defective ones

I learned to lube flush my pressure washer pump after hooping my first washer pump unloader and internals. Ten years later and replacement pump is still 100% awesome! Listen to this lady! You'll be happy next spring :-)
I would also recommend unscrewing the garden hose inlet and the pressure hose from the wand after each use. I had to replace the pump on mine because the aluminum inlet and electrolysis had welded the brass threads and there was no way I was able to get it off.
I own Full Steam Ahead Cleaning Services. We've been using the Briggs winterizer, which is a semi aerosol. I run it through the pumps every 50 hours. I also use it on the carpet steam cleaning units and have never had to replace a pump because of scaling
I have my 2 Jet washers stored indoors. One is 25 yrs old and the other is 12 yrs old ! They both work perfectly ! I always drain them down ! They are both Electric Jet Washers !
Chickanic, you are the best, most able to communicate mechanic I have ever seen! I don't have (and don't want) a pressure washer but I am amazed with your ability to communicate.
That stuff, Pump Saver, is great!! Thank you. Side note: that antique green fan on your bench.......my grandma had one exactly like it. Even the same color!? How cool. God bless you
I have a SunJoe electric pressure washer that starts and stops when you press the handle on the wand. No chance to hurt the pump. Yes, each fall I drain it and bring it in the house for the winter. Five plus years and it is still humming along. Excellent video as usual Bre..
White vinegar when poured into the pump will also remove mineral deposits. If it's good enough for a coffee maker, it's fine for a pressure washer. White vinegar however will not keep the pump from freezing, so Pump Saver is a one shop stop. Because I have equipment that contains potable water, I end up using RV anti-freeze to winterize everything. Not sure who Karcher uses from their pressure washer pumps, but they've become 2 seasons at the most pressure washers.
I've been winterizing my pressure washer for years with RV antifreeze. I use a short piece of garden hose attached to the inlet and fill the hose with the anti freeze. I start the motor and pump some water out, shut it off, refill the garden hose with more antifreeze start it and run it until I see pink coming out of the spray nozzle. I usually only have to fill the garden hose 2 or 3 times. I am going to check out the mechanic in a bottle for pressure washers because it does look like good stuff and we do have hard water with a lot of sediment. Thanks for the video!
I work at our recycling center and bring a working pressure washer home every weekend! I just got a Kranzle 1122! Works amazing! Thank you for the reminders! Great video
Thanks for the timely reminder, Just ran out and ran the pressure washer until it ran of gas.... just before I ran out of gas.... and pumped some North American Pressure Washer Pump Saver. Worked last winter and hope it keeps me safe this winter. will have to check out mechanic in a bottle next time.
All of my lawn equipment is already put away for the winter. Tomorrow I'm getting my snowblower out. I already fueled, greased and cleaned it. Great video 👍
The annual oil change, fuel stabilizer, plug check and maybe change and sharpening of blades (if it has blades) - of ALL the yard equipment. Everything gets cleaned, the winter tools are double-checked to ensure the spring process was done right. - And don't wait until the first snowfall to get your snow shovel and ice melt/sand!
I have been using the Briggs & Stratton pump saver for years, but decided to ordered two bottles of that pump saver to see if it will remove the mineral deposits in my pressure washer pumps. I have two pressure washers. Thanks for the video.
Just did mine like you said 5 minutes done cannot tell you how many pressure washers I find in our recycling center with perfectly running engines but the pump is shot so simple to eliminate the problem
I forget who told me but I use pump saver after every use (infrequent home maintenance) and i run the engine dry at the end of the season too. Thanks!!
So I think the pump saver solution has like CLR in it which is a delimer, I use to work on ice machines and you have to run a delimer through them to clean it up. If you would have watched it longer, you would see it bubble and it does an amazing job.
Yes those screens are in electric power washers to AND DONT FORGET YOUR WASHING MACHINE TO TWO OF THEM COLD AND HOT . They need checked to because you may not be getting the hottest water temperature if hot clogged. It may be filling with cold water faster .
Sounds like a multiple pumpsaver "save-off" is right up Project Farm alley. The first year I had a pressure washer made the freeze mistake. I removed the wand assuming the pump would drain, I was wrong and got a surprise in the spring when I fired it up again. Luckily only the outer bolt on housing was cracked. I was able to find a replacement however as often happens with these Chinese parts it was not an exact match, O ring reliefs' were different. Luckily after playing around with different size O rings managed to get it to work. Not relevant to your post but our pressure washer also has an engine problem. Starts fine but once it runs out of gas it won't restart until it cools down. I think it is the ignition coil but have not done any serious troubleshooting.
Thanks for the timely tips. I'm not worried about mine freezing as it's stored in the garage, but here in North Texas it's getting to be time to put all of my power equipment away for the season. I'll be looking for the Pump Saver this week.
I have an electric pressure washer. I DONT leave anything hooked up on the unit, after each use I empty the small pump an use a pump saver leaving it lubricity during the off season. Have a smaller one now, down the basement next to my Stihl farmboss. Thanks for the great video Matt
I am happy that your eye popping video came along when it did! I am ALMOST at the point of arriving at level 2 financial independence, and guess what your primary focus shifts to, once you arrive? Yup! My least favorite pastime, MAINTENANCE! That stuff was truly amazing! I am going to see what it does on the mineral deposits in my upstairs toilet! I will let you know... Thanks for the channel, and for all that you do!
When I had the cold water pressure washer I just unbolted the pump and stored it in the cellar. Not that easy with my hot water washer... With that I just recirculate PROPYLENE (not ethylene. That's poisonous!) glycol through the system. 👍 That protects from corrosion too and it's probably much cheaper than the "Pump saver" 😉
Always such excellent advice, that saves much $, time and frustration. I always turn off fuel shut off valve, run it until engine dies, with wand on, then end of season I drain out the fuel.
I actually use compressed air to blow out my lines and my pump 30 pounds is usually more than enough you blow it through for about 60 seconds. You’ll let it rest for about 30 and blow it again and you can get the hose and the pump pretty dry. Then followed up with pump saver
I live in central Texas. I have never done any of your stuff to my pressure washer. I have had it for over 5 years. Yes, it idles for 60 seconds up to 20 minutes. It will still remove junk grease and clean my garage to clean an engine bay. I have an automotive shop. I run super unlead in my motor. I empty my tank and ensure it runs out of gas to ensure the carbs are empty. This is what I Do. This doesn't apply to others in this state or any state. Thanks
Thank you! Yes, please do a comparison video about how well all Pump Saver brands actually work. I just bought Mechanic in a Bottle Pressure Washer Pump Saver and Winterizer 2-pack from your link, but it would be interesting to see how the others compare.
I have put new pumps on 4 pressure washers for friends. Lots cheaper than a new pressure washer because I work for free, and sometimes even pay for the pump. On each of these I applied a zip-tie to hold the trigger barely open so it won't burn up the pump, as nobody believes that idle trashes the pump.
Thanks I use Simpson pump saver on mine since it’s the same name brand. I’ve used it the last few years now no issues. Been using stihl MotoMix 4 cycle in my pressure washer it’s 4 cycle 93 octane ethanol free since I hardly use it. Maybe to pressure washer my house once a year. Thanks always saving time money and frustration
It's the same thing as this. If you don't have a lot of mineral deposits then just using automotive antifreeze would do the same thing and it's dirt cheap.
I'm ordering it. I always run rv antifreeze thru the pump and wand. (I learned) but I use mineral rich well water, this will solve that problem! Thank you,
Great video and excellent advice...as always. Have an electric washer that automatically shuts off but using pump saver is something I never thought about and will get some this year. No one around where I live sells the Mechanic in a Bottle (just Ryobi from HD and Briggs and Stratton from Lowe's and Ace), so I'll order some using your Amazon link. I only run free gas in all my small engines so I don't worry about having to use an ethanol preserver.
I learned something new, have never heard of Pump saver. I paid $3,000.00 for my Pressure washer in 1989. It has an electric motor and diesel fuel burner. I did have hard water in my shop. After I installed a water softener I cleaned the heating coils with muriatic acid. I have replaced the transformer at least three times. The pump could not suck water so I plumed the pump intake to 60 PSI cold water from my hose. I have a rebuild kit I have not yet installed. I have had to replace some pressure switches too. The MFG in PA Kleanline has terrible customer support. I found a Local Pressure washing business that did parts and repairs on the side to get my parts from. When I tried to order parts from Kleanline they were on backorder for 30 days or more because it was "The Busy Season" Nothern Equipment has a lot of parts too. Hotsy would be a better brand of commercial Pressure washer. I use Hydraulic oil in the pump gear box. The pump pistons have a place to add three drops of oil every few hours of use.
Another commercial washer owner. I Bought a cold pressure washer with a 240v 50A 10HP motor and 4kpsi 3.5 gallon ceramic pump. It’s amazing and luckily I haven’t needed maintenance yet beyond oil zerks even after 8 years.
@@hugegamer5988 Mine is 5 HP and 2,000 PSI. I wash many greasy trucks and heavy equiptment .. Cutting back to 1200 PSI and 180F cuts the grease very well. I do have a Turbo nozzle that works well in some applications. I have made wands short and longer and have one 15 feet long for cleaning under the diaper on my lime spreader conveyor
I interesting video. I use a propylene glycol antifreeze mix with distilled water that has worked well as a pump saver. One concern I would have is 99% percent chance that that pump is acidic to have that much effectiveness on mineral deposits. I would be very concerned having something that acidic in an aluminum pump all winter.
I need to pull my off and service it. I drain it after every use. The hose too. Every few years I take it off the motor and disassemble it. Mine has grease in it. I changed it out, and now it's good for a few more years. I broke a spring in it years ago. The motor and pump is 25+ years old. Giant pump.
I love your videos. I'm glad that I saw this,I'm about to put some stuff in mine. A few weeks ago it got really cold outside, And I knew that I needed to bring it inside, so the pump wouldn't freeze. I was just able to get some antifreeze for, I don't remember the brand. I'm going to check out the other video, power washer, idling.
Wow! So I would think that Electric pressure washers suffer the same buildup. would the process be the same? Maybe you could do a video? love your channel!
Wish I could use this info currently. Was looking into a pressure washer but all the reviews I was reading either complained of bad engines, bad pumps, or both. I couldn't figure out if there's any out there (without going to a commercial one) that aren't trash...
I just put my electric pressure washer away a week ago! Right after I winterized the camper. I have an airline to hose adapter that I use to push the water out of the camper lines at 20 psi. I hooked it up and pulled the handle with zero power. Thinking I should put something in there now 🤔 So, mechanic in a bottle is no good, but their pump saver is?
Great tip! I wonder how that compares to the Dexcool coolant used in vehicles. I been that for years. Granted I only use the power washer maybe twice a year, sometimes a few more.
I've had my troy built 2800 psi pressure washer for over 9 years. Every winter I put it in a closet in my house. I never let it set with gas in it for more than a day. It still runs like new
i use washers year round for drain jetters i use antifreeze ALL WINTER LONG IN MINE AFTER EACH USE. I have pumps that are over 20 years old. going to try the stuff you just showed just as a cleaner once a year. Do not know if the anti i use cleans but something is working good for me lol
So Chick, if 60 seconds compromises the pump, I guess a good question is how to de-fuel a pressure washer if you didn't time it correctly. We're in a drought situation here in the northeast and running it with water pushing through isn't an option.
I bought a HART Psig. Washer last year, it has been nothing but Trouble, it starts good but if you stop it to Fill Gas Tank, you cannot Pull the Rope, its like its locked up. Let it Cool for maybe 1/2 Hour and then you can pull the Rope Normally. I Had a Psig Washer that was 20 years old and I let it Idle all the time, in 20 years this Washer never Failed me and this New One right out of the Box has been a Disappointment . The Old Washer's Engine is still good and never used oil but Pump is worn out.
Hey Chickanic, what are your thoughts on flushing or soaking the pump/manifold in white vinegar? It works so well on removing corrosion, hard water build up and plain ole gunk. Thanks.

I’d like to try that stuff on my toilet bowls! We have really hard water.
CLR works great for that and is cheaper, though you need to bleach it to bright white first or it barely works at all.
Great info yet again! Love your videos and have been subbed and always like. Thanks so much for all your help!
I just put my electric pressure washer away a week ago! Right after I winterized the camper. I have an airline to hose adapter that I use to push the water out of the camper lines at 20 psi. I hooked it up and pulled the handle with zero power. Thinking I should put something in there now 🤔
So, mechanic in a bottle is no good, but their pump saver is?
Wonder if it will remove hardwater stains on bathroom or kitchen fixtures? How about glass shower doors?
Looks like a good product. I usually just take the pump off and take in indoors for the winter. Might have to look in to that.
@@tramptramp5401 A good idea. Didn't think of that. If climate controlled no worries.
Thanks for sharing! I’m going to try this on my faucet!
Just ordered me some! Thanks for the advice bro!!!☮✌🏻
Great tip! I wonder how that compares to the Dexcool coolant used in vehicles. I been that for years. Granted I only use the power washer maybe twice a year, sometimes a few more.
I'm going to check my pump this month Thanks Chicanic!
Got mine ordered today. Thanks for the heads up.
I've had my troy built 2800 psi pressure washer for over 9 years. Every winter I put it in a closet in my house. I never let it set with gas in it for more than a day. It still runs like new
Why can't they make a pump that bypasses or just doesn't ruin a pump?
It takes a few minutes to move ladders 😊or reset an area.
Use pump saver after each use, when longer times between uses
Yes
i use washers year round for drain jetters i use antifreeze ALL WINTER LONG IN MINE AFTER EACH USE. I have pumps that are over 20 years old. going to try the stuff you just showed just as a cleaner once a year. Do not know if the anti i use cleans but something is working good for me lol
Always use a pump saver and a fuel shut off. Mine has original pump for 15 years and starts on one pull every time. Thanks Bre. Where is Briggs?
This work for electric pressure washers too?
Thanks Bree love your videos if you do a comparison please include RV antifreeze also.
So Chick, if 60 seconds compromises the pump, I guess a good question is how to de-fuel a pressure washer if you didn't time it correctly. We're in a drought situation here in the northeast and running it with water pushing through isn't an option.
Great video!! I’m a total believer in this since hearing about how to do this. Thank you for sharing this video. 😁
Thank you Bre
Pretty darn amazing results with that product.
Good for electric pressure washers too.
Thanks for the ideo.
I use Rv antifreeze, works great 👍
Does it dissolve mineral deposits?
What about an electric pressure washer?
Would something like RV antifreeze work the same way? I just did it with my RV and it goes through the small pump in the RV. Plus I have leftover 😅
Ok OK OK ill go do it nowww Can i use anti freeze ?? I just E0 and avoid the that problem altogether
What can you do for sn electric pressure washer?
Hey Chickanic, what are your thoughts on flushing or soaking the pump/manifold in white vinegar? It works so well on removing corrosion, hard water build up and plain ole gunk. Thanks.
