Follow up to my COOLING SYSTEM EXPLAINED video where I change the coolant in my 2015 BMW M4 F82. Very simple once you know what to do, especially if you have a vacuum filler with an air compressor.
I used this cooling system refill kit and my air compressor to put the new coolant in to prevent air bubbles.

Thanks for the instruction. Was really quick and painless and got most of the capacity changed out. To speed things up I used some compressed air at the fill points “sealed” with a rag when the draining slowed down.

I know this video is a couple of years old and no-one has commented for 6 months, but it seems to be about the only one on the subject and it has been linked on a number of forums and stuff. So I thought I'd add this info, which is from BMW's own ISTA+ servicing software.
The capacities are 13.9 litres for the main engine cooling system, which BMW call the high-temperature circuit, and 3.9 litres for the charge cooling system, called the low temperature circuit.
The specified coolant is nitrite- and amino-free anti-freeze and corrosion inhibitor. BMW's own products are LC-87 for vehicles up to the end of 2018 and LC-18 from the start of 2019. The latter should not apply to the F80, as the last one was produced in October 2018. But M4s were still produced until 2020, so they could be affected. These are different products so, if you have a late M4, you need to check which to use. Something that may help: LC-87 is blue and LC-18 is green. LC-87 is made using a BASF product called Glysantin G48 and you need to look for that 48 when you buy. Some brands call it AD48, C48, ST48, KK48, etc. LC-18 is made by Valvoline and called Frostox HT-12. Both these are to be used 50:50 with water or you can buy them ready mixed and use them neat. BMW actually state that in countries where tap water is drinkable, it is acceptable for use in mixing, so you don't have to use distilled. But I just bought the ready mixed so I didn't have to worry about it.
Both of these products are considered by BMW to be LIFETIME coolants. They do not need to be changed every 3 or 4 years. From September 2003, coolant replacement is no longer part of BMW's service schedule. It's there in black and white. Do what you will with that information.
I have not worked on the main (high temp) cooling system of my car, so I can't comment on draining and refilling. I fitted a (massive) Mishimoto rad for the charge cooling (low temp) system so, obviously, I had to refill that. I didn't bother disconnecting the top hose from the electric pump. It's pretty much impossible to reach. The system seemed to drain pretty well and I didn't need to get every drop out, anyway, as I was refilling with the same stuff and it's LIFETIME. The 3.9 litres no longer applies to mine, as the new rad is much bigger than the stock item. I have no idea how much I used. I did not use a vacuum filling kit, just did it by hand. After refilling and running for a while, I had to top up with a very small amount, after cooling overnight. I have not had to add a single drop more, even after 2 track days. Same applies to the main system. My car does not lose coolant. So, if yours does, you may have a problem.
Just to reiterate what Alabama Man said, With the engine running, the top of the charge cooler is very cold, even after a dozen flat-out laps of Castle Combe circuit. Once the engine is stopped, the temperature of the cooler and intake pipe starts to rise due to hot air sitting inside.
Leaves in the rads. Big problem with these cars due to the layout with all the rads and coolers stacked on top of each other. That horizontally mounted oil cooler is a disaster. Leaves completely block the bottom section of the DCT cooler, if you have one. You have to drop the oil cooler to clear them out. It is possible to do this without completely removing the bumper. You just have to remove some of the plastic undershields. As Aaron says, what's the point in replacing your coolant if you rads are all blocked?
Thanks for all that info! I will reiterate though that NO fluid is ever “Lifetime”. BMW started that when they started footing the bill for maintenance. Per Mike Miller’s maintenance schedule, CHANGE IT if you plan on keeping that car long term

Thanks for this video... the vacuum device seems pretty well built and a good value. I did this slight modification to minimize the entrainment of air from the fill tube into the cooling system: Before attaching it to the car, completely assemble the vacuum tool. Place the fill hose into a container of distilled water. Take the part that screws into the reservoir and hold it tight against your leg or some other surface (to close off the air path there). Have all valves open except the one going to fill tube. Then attach your compressor hose, and slowly, give a small turn on the fill tube valve (doesn't take much), and you will prime the fill tube with distilled water. Close off the valve to stop the flow. To keep the fluid in the tube, you can hang the tip of it off of something from the top of the hood (coat hanger, caliper hanger, etc.). Then proceed as you demonstrate in vid. This way, you won't pull the air sitting in that tube into your system when you do the fill procedure under vacuum.

I just did this on 6 year old F-80. It worked perfectly. And yes I had to take out a little after the vacuum fill. On a side note I bought one extra gallon of BMW coolant so I changed the coolant in my wife‘s volvo...it was OK but now the turn signals don‘t work.

Thank you for the video! Nicely done and I'm definitely getting one of the those vacuum fillers. Just so I'm clear, it appeared in the video that you only needed two gallons of mixed coolant for the charged air side to refill. Is this correct? Thanks

Try running the car till warm and then touching the top of the air to water cooler shortly after turning off the car or while it’s still running. Notice if you touch it after certain amount of time after the car is turned off and siting heat from the head of the motor while transfer into the thinner material of the intercooler pretty quickly

Finally , how much gallons of coolant in intercooler how much water ? And how much coolant and water in the motor side ?
I did this exact procedure and instead of refilling with 50/50 I went 30/70 and added Redline Water Wetter. Thank you for this DIY! Question about your Dinan heat exchanger (because I am looking at the exact same unit)...did you log any change in IAT? Do you do track days? Can you do a review?

When you say your intercooler was warm to the touch were you feeling it after shutting the car off? If so that’s why, you need to feel it while the cars running. It will naturally heat up for a little when the car gets shut off

What happens if you don’t pressure fill the coolant? And just pour in the same amount you took out and just bleed it? When I changed my radiator for my e92 I drained out all the coolant and just filled the coolant tank and did the bleeding procedure there was burping and a stream that was flowing I guess that’s what’s supped to happened and I just kept roping it off until the electric pump stop. Ever since then the car is done no over heat I’m a DIY guy also and I’m still willing to learn new things, did I do anything wrong there? Thank you!
+Jenderson Pen sounds like you did the right thing. The pressure bleeder is just a more fool-proof way of making sure all the air is out of the system.
Great info re this. ? for you, i notice my IC tank always seems to be right and the low mark, but my main tank is always over the full mark. this normal? no matter how much i fill my IC tank its always right at the low mark. then seems to over fill my main tank. Any thoughts?
+Shnel M4 IDK if you saw my S55 Cooling System Explained video, but you should check it out if you haven’t. You’ll see that the two cooling systems (charge air and engine) are physically separate, so when you add fluid to the IC tank (charge air expansion tank) it cannot affect the main (engine) tank.

The hose going into the top of the water pump has the same C clip as the aux rad hose. Couldn't you remove that clip and disconnect the top hose?

Quick question, is there any reason why you do not drain the actual radiator of the car to a coolant flush? Compared to other cars for example like a Honda.

If I need to add coooant to my engine do I do it to both and do I need to mix with water ?
+@nismos3023 more important question is why do you need to add it? Sounds like you have a leak somewhere you need to find. Top off both if they are both low. You can add only distilled water if you’re not adding much, otherwise add 50/50 mixed.

@@HelpMeDIYI watched it back, and verified that you said 4 liters. Yikes! I am down 2 1/2 liters. Time for a new intercooler. I am praying that the internals of my engine are not rusting. Do you think If I unplug the electric water pump, and drain the coolant from that circuit for the intercooler that I could drive the car in the interim? And can you confirm whether the circuit for the intercooler is entirely separate from the engine coolant? Thank you sir!

Hi i am just wondering what your Oil Consumption like? Mine seems to use a quart every 3K miles is this normal?
Its seemed to use less when i got the car first about 2 years ago it was about 6K miles before i had to add a quart of oil
+sezzzi1 I have no oil consumption. If you do, you have a leak somewhere that needs to be fixed. I change my oil every 5-7K miles.

there is no oil leaks on my garage floor even if i leave it for a few days, nor is there any burning oil smell coming from the engine bay after it turn off .
Anyway could still be a small leak somewhere so i will get it checked out at the dealer thanks again👍
