  • In this series called "How to Get the Most From Adobe" we're going to go in to full Adobe "shill" and "fanboy" mode, as I get paid millions of dollars, to talk about all of the "extras" that you get with your $9.99 Lightroom and Photoshop subscription. Don't post a comment, because I'll be busy driving my Lamborghini to my beachfront house ;-)
    Or... what is more likely the case... I created this series for people who subscribe to the Adobe plan and just want some simple, free info on some things that they may not even know is included with their subscription. And anyone that doesn't use Lightroom or Photoshop or hates Adobe, should probably question themselves for watching a video titled "Get the Most From Lightroom and Photoshop" (Just sayin') ;-)
    Check the website for the full list of videos throughout March (mattk.com/blog)
    This first video will show you how you can create a free online web gallery for anyone to see right from your Lightroom collections. They won't need a subscription and you don't have to pay for any online services or have any tech background to post it.

    This is great video, it has opened my eyes to the "connections" between Lightroom Classic and the newer Lightroom(mobile). Two things I did not know, maybe because I'm stupid, or perhaps because I was not looking out for these features. . Firstly, I did not know that if you group photos on Lightroom Mobile into a folder, this folder sync's back to Lightroom Classic, under the "From Lightroom" tab under Collections. Also I finally noticed that all the photos I take on my Pixel phone that I import into the Lightroom Mobile app, they appear in my Lightroom Classic catalog under "Google Pixel". So photos on Lightroom (mobile) can appear twice in Lightroom Classic: in the catalog and in the collections. With two versions of Lightroom it seems a bit complicated at times. Thanks for the video, Matt, I really have found it useful and an eye opener!

    Thanks Matt, the process has a lot of quarks, I fiddeled lightly with it for some time and then used it on a big project big mistake... Some oddities 1) if I upload a collection that is edited in raw the donwloads made public are tiny jpegs. 2) if I use the mobile app from phone to upload on the go jpegs they download as same jpegs i put up, but it seems i have to sync them back to my pc (8000 photos)..not sure because since i thought i was smart creating a catalogue just for the job, well that backfired because i had to merge it into my master catalogue to move on..otherwise no more syncing. 3 if I export a raw to jpeg fron lightroom classic to pc and manually upload them i can create a gallery and share it but my images are a little greyed out and the gallery visible to me with a valid link appears empty to whoever uses it...so weird I will be watching a lot of videos on this because I'm a little lost...and now waiting for 5000 images to sync back to my pc that I don't need and already have on another catalogue. Anyways thanks to you and others I will figure it out.

    Hey Matt. I had no idea this feature existed. Thank you! I do have a question for you. What resolution/quality setting do they get if they choose to download? I've found that it's much easier to share web sized (2048px) with people than full res. For quick loading and downloading, along with sheer storage size. Do they offer any way to limit this? I could see Adobe building out a very robust proofing/deliverable platform here for amateurs and professionals if it had a couple more features.

    • @MattKloskowski
      @MattKloskowski  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Daniel - Glad you like it. I think they're around 2000-ish pixels, but you could always try it for yourself, download it, and see so you're absolutely sure what size is delivered. Thanks!

  • @darklighthouse999
    @darklighthouse999 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    One limitation that makes this not quite as useful is that you can only sync one lightroom catalog at a time with Lightroom Classic. If you use catalogs as a way to organize images from major shoots (e.g., establish a separate catalog for each shoot or genre of images). This means that if you change the catalog to be synched, previous images are un-synched...

    • @MattKloskowski
      @MattKloskowski  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Mike. I would never suggest anyone use multiple catalogs. It's just asking for trouble. It'd be like a book library having multiple cataloging / computer systems to find books. It makes it much more difficult to find things and organize, and there's really no upside to it when LR includes everything you need in one catalog to segment your photos any way you need. Everyone's workflow is different, but just about everyone agrees that LR is best used as one catalog (yes, you'll always find some one who disagrees). Your mileage may vary but just realize it goes against the grain, so you won't find much support or options for it if that makes sense. Thanks!

    Matt, another terrific video- thank you! I'm glad you're making a choice to "share what's good." (And I'd say that even if I wasn't a former Adobe employee ;) One question-- do you know if it's possible to create a link to an album that automatically brings it up in slideshow mode? I've used Google Photos extensively to create and share albums with folks, and found myself wishing this existed. Didn't see it here either, but one can hope. And hey, next time you're "up on the mountain" talking with the gods, perhaps you can plug it! Thanks again

      Joe, if you start a slideshow and then copy the link and then send that to someone and they paste it into their browser it starts as a slideshow. At least it seems to work in Win 10. I also believe that the timing you set for the slideshow in LR will be maintained, but didn't test that part. One of Lr Sync's biggest shortcomings, for me at least, is that it can't sync smart collections.
    I can't recommend Jeffrey Friedl's plugin to overcome that strongly enough (located at regex.info/blog/lightroom-goodies/smart-collection-sync).
    I use smart collections extensively and it's quite nice to have e.g. a "5 stars streetlife" album online that gets updated automatically as I rate and tag imported images.
    Also, something else worth mentioning, you said you can't do anything else (other than view your photos) on the web albums, and that's quite wrong. You can actually edit them, it's a sort of a (non-classic) Lightroom on the web.

  • @darklighthouse999

    Well, since this video, I've consolidated some of my LR catalogs and started using the gallery capabilities to share images. Unfortunately, as of today, my LR Classic is no longer syncing to the cloud. I've tried everything I can think of - - AND spent 2hours with Adobe tech support - - but my LR Classic is no longer synching... And for me anyway, this is the reason I've never been willing to move content to the Adobe infrastructure - - stuff just stops working and no / minimal access to tech support to fix.. No need to respond and sorry for venting, but over the years, this experience is more typical than not. Oh well, back to my dedicated web site ;-)

    • @MattKloskowski
      @MattKloskowski  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Mike. I guess one thing to consider is that as a classic user, you don't really have anything to "move content to the Adobe infrastructure". Classic doesn't backup to the cloud or anything. You'd use it to simply share a gallery, etc... There's a reason Adobe doesn't put Classic as the "cloud backup" program. It wasn't built to do it and there are bugs. I don't have 'em, but I know people that do. Best I can suggest is to go in to Prefs and unsync and resynce the whole thing.
      Again though, if you're a classic user thinking you'd use ANY of these features to "move content to the Adobe infrastructure" that would be wrong. The only way to move to the Adobe infranstructure is to go with the "cloud" version of Lightroom. Do a google search and you'll find people don't have sync issues there as it works great because the program was designed from ground up for it. Good luck!

For example, you titled yours as "Landscapes by Matt Kloskowski". When the photos are viewed on a computer or tablet that heading, just like it was in your video, is above the photo. When they are viewed on an iPhone the heading is at the top of the photo but inside the actual photo (so it covers some of the photo). I've reported this to Adobe but I'm not sure how that all works. It's not a portfolio, so I wouldn't use it as one (stay tuned this month for a video on that). FB and IG are social sharing platforms. You share a photo and it organically goes out to your community.
