  • After 5 days sailing offshore, we make landfall in Central America! Sailing into the Gulf of Fonseca, which borders three countries, we are greeted by pilot whales and lush, beautiful islands. We head to El Salvador first, making our landfall on Isla Conchaguita, where we explore the small fishing village and simple living.

    Most of the islands in the gulf of Fonseca belong to El Salvador, half of the gulf practically. Nicaragua has the other half but it doesn't have any islands just, like you said, a large rock protruding above the water. Honduras has a small part of the gulf, close to its shore but the Salvadoran and Nicaraguan portions enclose it.

    It's called Synthetic ATON. When it's inconvenient or impractical to put electronics at some location, a shore station will broadcast a 'faked location' transmission, putting the indicator on your AIS map. It won't be long before all maps and map features are electronic.

    • @AdventureAdriftSailing
      @AdventureAdriftSailing  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      We were going to take the dinghy in there but the anchorage was not great and then we found out later from the government officials to avoid El Tamarindo due to high organized crime and other dangers. This was the only time in two and a half years when we went ashore we had a couple of very uneasy moments and started to feel unsafe.

    The day we come up with a real practical alternative or a biodegradable replacement for plastic is going to be a real turning point for the planet. I remember as a boy (a long time ago) visiting the beach at Ayr Scotland the only plastic you would see on the beach came from fishing trawlers, fish boxes, the odd glove or boot. Now those same beaches are festooned with plastic detritus, I used to love beachcombing now I find it too depressing.
    On a lighter note, is that not Hillary’s bonnet that Ty is modeling. Do we have a what’s mine is mine and what’s yours is mine situation?

    • @AdventureAdriftSailing
      @AdventureAdriftSailing  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We have used a pole in a number of our videos, we have a whisker pole and we generally only use it to pole out our headsail in light winds or rolly seas. Our spinnaker is an Asym and does really need the pole but we have occasionally used it for that.

    You may want to check out the US Department of State web site and just read any notifications on those Countries that you are near. No alarm, just to be aware. I would also keep the phone number of the Embassies in those countries that you go on land. You can also register on their web site. If there is an earthquake or some kind of political type disturbances, they will try to contact you and if needed come find you. Just something to keep in mind. Not to scare you. My son is a Foreign Service Officer for the State Department. His job is to keep people safe overseas. Not an easy job.

    • @AdventureAdriftSailing

      @@AdventureAdriftSailing Well, what doesn't make sense to me is that the State Dept. Does a terrible job of letting people know what they can help with. Nothing on TV or in the newspapers. Sad thing is, according to my son, you wouldn't believe the trouble people get into overseas. So I'm encouraged that you will look into things before going on shore. Honduras is in a mess, so think hard and investigate going there. But also please enjoy and have FUN.....
