You forgot Dennis Johnson. The guy was guarding Magic during the intense Celtics-Lakers rivalry and was the finals MVP of 1979 Finals. He's also a 9x All-Defensive Team. Rajon Rondo was the the MVP of the Celtics in 2010 and he lead the league in steals that season. He is also a 4x All-Defensive Team PJ Brown - Dude was an underrated defender. He never had enough recognition because he was overshadowed by his teammate, Alonzo Mourning who also happened to be an elite defender who won DPOY award. He was a 3x All-Defensive Team. He was also vital during the 2008 Celtics championship. Andre Iguodala - You could argue that he was more vital in that Warriors 2015 than Draymond Green. He won finals MVP for a reason and he was guarding Lebron for most of the series. He only won 2x All-Defensive Team spots despite being a great defender. Al Horford - The fact the he only won a single All-Defensive Team spot is beyond me. Dude was the anchor of both the Hawks and the Celtics with his defensive presence. Celtics were top 2 in the defensive ratings in 2017-18 season and you could argue that he should have won the DPOY that time. Doug Christie - another underrated defender. Arguably the best defender on the Kings team with the second best defensive rating in 2002-03 season. Would have been an NBA champion too if it wasn't for the shady 2002 series against the Lakers.
@@bboywolf Though at least Chandler was truly not only a great defender and lockdown and the best defender of his team but actually anchoring it too. And for the previous 2011 year too, so much that his defense is what won a Mavs championship. Unlike Marc, missing all three of these things.
You failed to mention BOBBY JONES... 10 All-Defensive Teams (9 First Teams), one of the greatest defenders ever recently inducted to the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame.
Basically most of these guys were snubbed because their defense isn't always shown on the stat sheet and because they always had some defensive big man who made much bigger impact on their teams defensively.
Chris Paul has some of the most incredible stats. His overall efficiency is out of this world. He already has one of the best assist to turnover ratios and then add that he averages the same mount of steals as turnovers.
the guys like Kobe and Joe Dumars were a definition of you doesnt need a defensive stats to be a great defender. They make opposing scorer hard to score and in the other end they will kill you offensively.
Players: - Joe Dumars - John Stockton - Patrick Ewing - Chris Paul - Lebron James - Jason Kidd - Kobe Bryant - Tony Allen - Bruce Bowen - Andrei Kirilenko - Scottie Pippen - Tim Duncan
Well, there was also some other early DPOY snubs, where the League was weirdly obsessed with giving guards with high steal counts the award for most of the 80s, even though rim protecting bigs has absolutely insane value for the era.
I always thought Doug Christie was a solid defender. Not as great as some of the names on this list, but he made an impact and was definitely a key part of the Kings success from 01 - 04. At 6'6" he would guard 1 - 4. He would guard PF's during the "Run and Gun" small ball portion of the game because the Europeans Peja and Hedo (who were both bigger than him), weren't physical enough.
Andy Hoops: Pippen was definitely the better defender than Michael Jordan who didn't had the task to guard the best player of the other team. MJ could mainly focus on scoring because Pippen had a bigger defensive responsability. Rodman was just a role player with only rebounding as his main job and nothing else.
With the Pistons Rodman was one of the greatest perimeter defenders and also arguably the greatest undersized post defender ever. He matched up with Jordan or Pippen depending on what Chuck Daly wanted him to do and he completely shutdown both players as well as anyone when he was a Piston. Shit he made Pippen quit during the last two games of the series when the Pistons were at their peak the last game Pippen was too scared to play and faked a migraine to avoid the matchup.
@@Srbenda126 Jordan early on was a the superior perimeter defender whereas Pippen was still an elite perimeter defender but he could handle his own when defending in the post/paint whereas Jordan was too slim to do so so imo Pippen was the overall better defender due to being able to guard all the positions except for the best of the best post players.
@teslagod2003 Didn't he also have like ONE QD but it was taken back on some sort of technicality? I believe the '03 season. True too, man just played his game the best he knew how.
Honorable Mentions: Tree Rollins, Bobby Jones (older, when award was invented, but still one of the best), Paul Pressey, Mookie Blaylock, Anthony Mason, PJ Brown, Antonio/Dale Davis, Buck Williams, Derek Harper, Thurl Bailey, Bobby Phills, Chuck Hayes, Shane Battier, James Posey, Paul George, Nate McMillan, Bo Outlaw Eddie Jones, Rasheed Wallace, and etc.
Honorable mentions to Shawn Marion and Andre Iguodala. These guys never got the respect they deserved from the media, but players hated being guarded by these 2
Agreed, people laugh at Ewing being dunked on so much, and for it IS quite entertaining as I'm a life long Bulls fan, but one of the reasons he was dunked on so much is because he was courageous enough to try and block the shot rather than worry about if he was going to be on a poster. That type of effort is commendable.
In a lot of these situations, it's the case of just playing in an era alongside greater players. The fact though that Tony Allen never won the award is criminal.
@@Statalyzer Indeed, especially in the 90s and 00s, that case was bs. The caliber of players that got robbed for that exact method is criminal, and especially over the decades.
It’s because the DPOY is generally (not always) given to guys who specialize in defense and/or are unlikely to win a championship. If you’re a truly well rounded player and your team is winning most games then they’re most likely limiting you to the discussion of MVP. And this gets political as the award can highly raise the trade value of the player who gets it.
Scottie not winning DPOY was tough, but Ewing never winng is absurd. He is the best defensive center in college history and one of the best of his era on defense.
All these guards are legit the reason they awarded Smart this season. They have overlooked guards on defense since Jordan, Dumars & Payton. They prefer versatile Wings & Big Men who can guard inside and out, interrupt passes & contest shots. Which is understandable
@@disco4255 u buggin. Wade was lockdown. Great on ball, great help defender, a pesky ball stripper, incredible player in the passing lanes, and a fantastic weak side, chase down, and head up shot blocker as a 6 ft 4 sg. He was def a top notch defender on par with kobe.

Andrei Kirelenko, Shawn Marion, and Anthony Mason are the most underrated defenders of all time. They’re perfect examples of Swiss Army knifes and can guard 1-5.
Although he played, only five season when the award was first given, the greatest defensive small forward in my opinion is Doctor J, the most overlooked regarding his defensive prowess, guarded all five positions, number one in blocks and steals for small forwards, true small forwards, not power forwards and centers playing small forwards. Also a guy, who's underrated by the name of Terry Tyler.
I love Marc Gasol, and I love the Grizzlies, but the 2013 DPOY win was always kinda weird to me considering he wasn't even voted to the 1st team all-defense that year. It's definitely a testament to the team's elite defense during that time and the tendency to prefer big men for the award, but it kinda sucks since I'm also a fan of lebron and it was his best chance of winning DPOY
I would put marcus smart on the list, Tayshaun Prince, Lindsey Hunter in his prime, Ron Harper who guarded the best guard on the opposite team during the bulls second 3peat, John starks, Charles Oakley, Doc Rivers, Reggie Theus, Dan Majrle, Horace Grant (Orlando year's) epic block on KJ to win the Finals against Phoenix, Dwayne Wade, Andre Iguodala, Healthy Grant Hill was also a lock down defender in his Piston days, just to name a few.

DJ would have one if the award existed during the prime of his career. He got the most votes for all defensive team in both 1980 and 1981.
So you're telling me Scotty never won
Shame isn't it
The funny thing is, Marc Gasol was just All NBA Defensive 2nd Team when he won DPOY!
Tyson Chandler too
Crazy
@@bboywolf Though at least Chandler was truly not only a great defender and lockdown and the best defender of his team but actually anchoring it too. And for the previous 2011 year too, so much that his defense is what won a Mavs championship.
Unlike Marc, missing all three of these things.
@@bboywolf And, of course, didn't rob anyone either, unlike Marc with Lebron.
Says a lot because he shouldn't have won DPOY
You failed to mention BOBBY JONES... 10 All-Defensive Teams (9 First Teams), one of the greatest defenders ever recently inducted to the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame.
That guy got some hoops he always jump like he was flying
also the inaugural 6th moty
FACTS! Even more overlooked and underrated than Dumars.
Jones was an all time lockdown, and probably one of the first ones too.
Bobby jones could also guard 1-5
Basically most of these guys were snubbed because their defense isn't always shown on the stat sheet and because they always had some defensive big man who made much bigger impact on their teams defensively.
Chris Paul has some of the most incredible stats. His overall efficiency is out of this world. He already has one of the best assist to turnover ratios and then add that he averages the same mount of steals as turnovers.
the guys like Kobe and Joe Dumars were a definition of you doesnt need a defensive stats to be a great defender. They make opposing scorer hard to score and in the other end they will kill you offensively.
Oh man, this is one of the best vids you made.
Players:
- Joe Dumars
- John Stockton
- Patrick Ewing
- Chris Paul
- Lebron James
- Jason Kidd
- Kobe Bryant
- Tony Allen
- Bruce Bowen
- Andrei Kirilenko
- Scottie Pippen
- Tim Duncan
12 Greatest Nba teams who never won a championship
1. NBA referees
Russel OG 2. The 2000-2004 Sacramento Kings
yea, on account of the corrupt refs lol.
Well, there was also some other early DPOY snubs, where the League was weirdly obsessed with giving guards with high steal counts the award for most of the 80s, even though rim protecting bigs has absolutely insane value for the era.
Haven’t seen the list yet but Timmy d should be number 1. He was a 15 times all defender. Enough said.
Bowen should be doing time not awarded.
he is responsible for a lot of injuries, and got away with it... the reason why i hated the spurs. eventhough im a david robinson apologist.
Stelios Christopoulos bruh I saw him at a trampoline park and got a pic with him
@@ralphfoster1001 Was he placing his foot under jumping people?
I always thought Doug Christie was a solid defender. Not as great as some of the names on this list, but he made an impact and was definitely a key part of the Kings success from 01 - 04.
At 6'6" he would guard 1 - 4. He would guard PF's during the "Run and Gun" small ball portion of the game because the Europeans Peja and Hedo (who were both bigger than him), weren't physical enough.
@HoopTrap.
Larry Bird....his defensive IQ is off the charts
Andy Hoops: Pippen was definitely the better defender than Michael Jordan who didn't had the task to guard the best player of the other team. MJ could mainly focus on scoring because Pippen had a bigger defensive responsability. Rodman was just a role player with only rebounding as his main job and nothing else.
Pippen was a better defender in the second 3 peat, but prime Jordan was a better defender than prime Pippen
Rodman was a better defender than both of them
With the Pistons Rodman was one of the greatest perimeter defenders and also arguably the greatest undersized post defender ever.
@@Zappappappappa Jordan was stronger than Pippen lol, Pippen was longer
AK47! It's rare to see a list that has him. Criminally underrated.
2013 DPOY was Marc Gasol. He got but the league didn't put him in the First All Defensive team. But Lebron make it. I still can't believe it.
Man Tim Duncan never winning genuinely shocked me
Duncan and pippen not winning was crazy
@teslagod2003 Didn't he also have like ONE QD but it was taken back on some sort of technicality? I believe the '03 season. True too, man just played his game the best he knew how.
Great video idea! Great list! I agree with all thesw names. Knew Duncan would be #1.
Great call on Tony Allen & AK47!!!
Nice to see tony allen get some love!! bro was a dawg
Honorable Mentions: Tree Rollins, Bobby Jones (older, when award was invented, but still one of the best), Paul Pressey, Mookie Blaylock, Anthony Mason, PJ Brown, Antonio/Dale Davis, Buck Williams, Derek Harper, Thurl Bailey, Bobby Phills, Chuck Hayes, Shane Battier, James Posey, Paul George, Nate McMillan, Bo Outlaw Eddie Jones, Rasheed Wallace, and etc.
Glad my boy AK47 got mentioned! Beast!
Honorable mentions to Shawn Marion and Andre Iguodala. These guys never got the respect they deserved from the media, but players hated being guarded by these 2
KD and Kobe both said Tony Allen was the toughest defender they ever faced. Lot of respect for Tony.
Just by making this historical footage along can win u the DPOY in today's league. Greatjob Andy, that was tons of impressive defenders in your list !
The Utah Jazz team with williams and AK47 is so underrated...
And Carlos Boozer
I love the menacing jazz music that plays at the beginning of a lot of your videos lmao... random, but yeah.
10 years from now Marcus Smart will be on this list.
F that nigga
Best flopper ever lol
Nah.
Avery Bradley too
@@Joe_Parmesan yeah so underrated
Ewing was an underrated defender cause he always got dunked on. But that shows that he was always gonna try to contest or block a shot no matter what
Agreed, people laugh at Ewing being dunked on so much, and for it IS quite entertaining as I'm a life long Bulls fan, but one of the reasons he was dunked on so much is because he was courageous enough to try and block the shot rather than worry about if he was going to be on a poster. That type of effort is commendable.
Stockton, Dumars/Kobe, Pippen, Duncan, Ewing. Hell of a starting 5 both offenseively and defensively
Bowen 6th man! Would shut down the bench singlehandedly.
In a lot of these situations, it's the case of just playing in an era alongside greater players. The fact though that Tony Allen never won the award is criminal.
I think in most cases it's that centers with impressive block totals win too often compared to everyone else.
@@Statalyzer Indeed, especially in the 90s and 00s, that case was bs.
The caliber of players that got robbed for that exact method is criminal, and especially over the decades.
@@dusk6159 Pippen with 0 DPOY and Gary Payton with only 1.....
@@Statalyzer Yeah that's just crazy to recall, sheesh.
Without mentioning all the others on top, too
@@dusk6159 And now in this era, no defence is played.
Andy Hoops: "Nobody talks about Kirilenko anymore."
NBA 2k19 My Team Developers: "Hold my beer"

Great video TD21 has one of the highest defensive win shares in history crazy!!!!
I think Scottie should've won in 1995, when he led the bulls in both steals and blocks. He led the league in steals and steals per game.
That's crazy, like the AK47 after him
*steals and steals?*
@@Etgan76 total steals at 232 and steals per game at over 2 per game
Steals and blocks are so overrated....
Avery Bradley. An awesome defender that never got recognition until Boston was competitive after Pierce, Garnett, and Allen left.
one of the best on ball defenders ever, I feel he should be on this list
You should probably show more defense highlights rather than offense
All these guards are legit the reason they awarded Smart this season. They have overlooked guards on defense since Jordan, Dumars & Payton. They prefer versatile Wings & Big Men who can guard inside and out, interrupt passes & contest shots. Which is understandable
Dwyane Wade? He regularly averaged at least 1.5spg and 1 block a game. He’s been snubbed from a lot of All-Defensive Teams.
Exactly what I said. Especially that 09 year where he had over 200 steals and 100 blocks. That was similar to the year Jordan won the award.
Mainly cause of Kobe. Kobe has 12 all defensive teams. It's hard to win it over Kobe.
@@hennylo68 to be honest wade got snubbed by kobe
@@jasonfutrell3155 yep it's tough to win it with Kobe there every year. You're just gonna have to accept 2nd team.
@@hennylo68 really goes to show you how these awards are popularity contest sometimes
In like 5 years when people bring up Tim Duncan kids are gonna call him a boring offensive player who was a bad defender because he never won a DPOY.
Timothy should've won at least one. F' Marcus Camby.
Fabrizio Mariotti I’ll get you banned from TH-cam
Great video. I also would have mentioned Shawn Marion, Karl Malone and one between Mookie Blaylock and Terrell Brandon.
Tony Allen was sum mean. Super underrated
Could’ve sworn Duncan won one. Great video!!
Dwayne Wade where do you leave him ??
Sergio Charris *dwyane

I LOVE IT! ❤ 😂 He belonged on the 80s Pistons team. 🤣
Whoh, Tim Duncan never won dpoy wow, holy Toledoes Batman
Wow so close to 250k!!! Congratulations
Can you do how good was Dell Curry and Michael Thompson
These 12 guys would probably dominate the league in any point of NBA history
PG: Stockton/Kidd/CP3
SG: Kobe/Dumars/Allen/Bowen
SF: LeBron/Pippen
PF: Duncan/AK47
C: Ewing
You should probably do the 12 best scorers who never won a scoring title so we could pit these guys head to head (I'd wager the above team would crush that team though)
Kobe and Tim Duncan definitely should've won atleast 1 dpoy they was the best defensive players on the perimeter and in the paint
maybe Tim not kobe really tho. there was never a year he shoulda been the dpoy over the ppl who did win it.
Really well can you name me a great 2 guard that tourched him in any playoff series like any bro alot of ppl say Bruce Bowen or Ron Artest was the best perimeter defender but that's not true real students of the game know that great defense don't always add up to stats sometimes it's as simple as did they score cause if they didn't score then the answers yes great defense is more than stats just ask kyrie Erving who he'd rather score against lebron James or Kobe Bryant he'll tell you and you sure as hell don't add 14 all 1st team defense awards to your resume without being able to play great defense that and if he couldn't stop you he'd out score you but it was rare that he couldn't stop you like as in I never! just ask lebron kd Harden Westbrook ray Allen Reggie Miller jalen rose Scottie pippen mj tmac deron Williams Carmelo Anthony jr Smith spreewell rip Hamilton manu ginoble and even iverson if he was guarding you it was going to be a long night the only one that could stop that was Phil Jackson game planning look I'm just saying you never seen anybody he was guarding out score him or come close to there normal offensive numbers they acostum to putting up when he's guarding them
Kobe never
Kobe is a no, student of the game.
Tim Duncan's 2007 playoff run really stood out to me how great a defender he was. Go back and watch
Lebron?! The guy who needs his teammate to shove him to go play defense? There is much more to defense than chase down blocks. 😉
When Sean Elliott was out Will Perdue started at center, David Robinson played power forward, and Duncan started at small forward.
Kareem also never won Dpoy and is on the top 10 list of the greatests shot blockers of all time.
@Mourning Star They should of give him an award...at least.
@Mourning Star but it did fool
@Mourning Star lmfaoooo you're mad as fuck nigga
@Mourning Star Yeah and he was only an average defender by that point in his career even though he was devastating on D when he was younger.
@Mourning Star Oh yeah, gotcha.
Andrei Kirelenko, Shawn Marion, and Anthony Mason are the most underrated defenders of all time. They’re perfect examples of Swiss Army knifes and can guard 1-5.
You should do a "how good was AK47" video
I really appreciate u putting Joe D on list he was so underrated
Lindsay Hunter was the best wing defender I’ve ever seen
"Ewing was a great defender" *shows offensive highlights and an injury*
Ewing never gets his due !!
He was better than Admiral. Towards the end of his career with Duncan and Co gave him a better outlook.
If Patrick Ewing played in todays game he would’ve been DPOY no doubt about it
Ya like 5 times most underrated player of the 90s
I would put marcus smart on the list, Tayshaun Prince, Lindsey Hunter in his prime, Ron Harper who guarded the best guard on the opposite team during the bulls second 3peat, John starks, Charles Oakley, Doc Rivers, Reggie Theus, Dan Majrle, Horace Grant (Orlando year's) epic block on KJ to win the Finals against Phoenix, Dwayne Wade, Andre Iguodala, Healthy Grant Hill was also a lock down defender in his Piston days, just to name a few.
love this list!! even if we consider Bruce to be dirty, he’d still start in my defensive starting line up......WE NEED AN ALL DEFENSIVE THIRD TEAM
Ewing, Lebron, Mark Eaton, Scottie, Tony Allen, Jrue Holiday, Shane Battier, Duncan, Kobe, Kareem, CP3 and Dennis Johnson
Tim Duncan was not as big of a surprise as scottie
Duncan should had definitely won that one instead of Camby...
@Chris Paul lol you failed to mention bill smh 😑
Cp3 the poster boy for small guards 🔥 him locking up Kevin Durant who is a versatile, borderline 7 footer is an amazing feat.
