For security I would probably use Bluetooth. I've thought about this before because I'm a Ham(always thinking about radio 😂). I wouldn't want something another person could easily listen in on and potentially mess with my smart home. There are already push to talk Bluetooth speaker microphones. You could take one apart and put it in any box you wanted easily.

      Yo 👋
I'm the guy that built it
The walkie is just a shell.
      Everything is ESP based inside.
It's not radio controlled anymore, it's WIFI based.
It's an ESP32, an I2S microphone and a I2S DAC driving the original speaker.
Basically, it's the same components that you find in the M5 Atom Echo.
I'll try to make a tutorial if I have time ;)

@@HorizonDomotique I figured it was esp32 based. That is awesome how you integrated the buttons to activate it and operate it. That is an awesome job on it!! A totorial or walk through video would be awesome!! That has my idea juices flowing. Now I need to searxh ebay for old school toys and stuff I had as a kid. My wife would get a kick out of something like this to control the house.

@@MikeHarris1984Integrating the buttons was basically a matter of using a multimeter to find where the connection was happening when I was pressing on the buttons.. and soldering new wires from these points .
The good thing about 70s electronics is that is not small like the current electronics 😂
Everything was super clear, super big inside.
So even for a dumb non-tech guy like me, it was not super hard .

@@HorizonDomotique Very nice! An ESP is a great option with it's low power. There are so many ways to do a project like this.
