  • Increase the range of any handheld radio, A Baofeng, Yaesu or Icom with a counterpoise, otherwise known as a "tiger tail". A tiger tail is a length of wire added to an antenna to take the 1/4th wave rubber duck to a half wave dipole antenna.

    I would put a wire lug under the earth screw and have you two different wires with clips on the end.
    Now you can change the counter poise between bands.

    Take the 19.5 inch wire and make a coil by wrapping it around a pen or pencil. Do this coil on the end nearest the connector in such a way that the overall length is 6.5 inches. Tada! you have a dual band counterpoise!

  • @LightTower

    What happens when you add this little wire to the ground of the antenna/body of the radio; is that you give the antenna a better ground plane. This increases the DB level of the antenna, and allows you to have a more focussed beam pattern, ergo a better transmit range 👌
    Very clever 😉

    • @PlaceholderforBjorn
      @PlaceholderforBjorn ปีที่แล้ว +17

      It's quite interesting and fascinating to me that you need to increase the size of the ground plane.
      The "common sense" would be to increase the size of the actual antenna.
      This show how much black magic(not really) radio is.

    • @brandonlaragirl
      @brandonlaragirl ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Got a question. Do half wavelengths dipoles require a ground plane I have one for 27 MHz. Strung up in a tree the center is about 30 ft off the ground in the coax goes into my bedroom it works pretty good for short-range and I do get to hear some skip when it's in but I'm just curious I still don't quite understand if it needs a ground and this whole premise of ground plane. From what I understand dipoles don't require that? It's also a vertical one but I have the bottom portion pulls away from the coax out about a 30 degree angle to avoid interference

    • @LightTower
      @LightTower ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Any ground plane you can give your antenna will increase it's transmit performance. In some cases your antenna will work fine without a ground plane (depends on the kind of antenna). If you're only receiving signals then you don't really need a ground plane.

    • @LightTower

    There was once a commercial product to do this. It was called a Tigertail and it had a loose fitting ring meant for a BNC type antenna mount. I didn't trust the connection at all. Taking it one step further, I found that it did help on a bare radio, but add the wired external mike and it actually made reception worse. The solution was to either use the external microphone as the counterpoise OR the Tigertail, but never both.

  • @jmr
    @jmr ปีที่แล้ว +34

    I never noticed a range increase with this trick when holding my HT. I use a Tiger tail for weak signals monitoring however because I often set it down for long periods. It can make a big difference then.

    • @Pelnied
      @Pelnied ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Correct. When you are holding it, you capacitvely couple to the HT and become the 2nd half of the quarter wave antenna to make it more like a half wave dipole. When you aren't holding the HT, it's missing that 2nd half of the antenna and gives poor performance. Thus using the wire while not holding it brings the 2nd half of the antenna back and it's more like a full dipole.

  • @Senator315

    Clever way to make a dipole.
    The wire inside the stock antenna is coiled so it's manageable, but that also makes it less efficient and it could be 1/4, 1/2 or full, but most likely 1/2 going by its size.
    Without knowing the length of the coil, you are just assuming that it's at full wavelength.
    Open it and check. Sure you'll make a slight gain the way you did it, but you won't see its full potential unless you do it properly.
    A well built dipole works very well for its size.
    440 MHz is 681mm or 68.1cm. For UHF 430-450 MHz 70cm is acceptable but 68.1cm is better.

    The problem with this is when the tranceiver was mached to the inefficient helical wound antenna that comes with the radio, it assumes a capacitive coupling with a hand holding on to it. The only proper way to do this hack is to also change the antenna to a straight physical 1/4 wave as well as the tiger tail. This will allow your hand held to operate similar to a 1/2 wave dipole with some shortning of the tiger tail to tune in with the forearm coupling as well. We did this years ago with our air band hand held's to improve the omni pattern similar to that of an aircraft instalation. Unfortunately if done with original helical antenna the result is pretty average for the inconvenience of a wire hanging and tangling on things. On a side note you do not have to disconnect and reconnect for dual band operation as two tuned tiger tales will work fine for 70 cm and 2 metre together if compensated for by tuning together. One will tune in and the other out and vice versa.

    so you have a piece of wire dangling and getting tangled into stuff. if you use a handheld microphone or headset, the shielding of this cable acts as counterpoise and it much cleaner approach or use an SMA Port-saver and attach the wire directly to the body of the port-saver adaptor and insert it between the antenna connector and the antenna. even easier use big wire-lug with a hole large enough for the sma antenna connector to go thru and clamp it by screwing the antenna on.

    I'm new to radio so this could be a dumb question. Could I attach both lengths of wire at once to get both sets of frequencies?

    What length do you need for gmrs?

  • @MopH3ad
    @MopH3ad ปีที่แล้ว

    I guess that would depend on the electrical length of the tx end

    Ground plane. But it looks like a coaxial antenna, so the calculations are probably off a bit.

    How do you find ground on a multimeter?

    • @stevecoggins3401
      @stevecoggins3401 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Most Meters have a continuity beeper. Touch one probe to the antenna ground and probe all screws on the case until one beeps. If no continuity mode, just use the Ohm meter function and do the same thing. The reading will drop to zero (or close to) if the screw is connected to antenna ground.
