I first heard her a long, long time ago, singing along with Sandy Denny on the The Bunch record on the song The Loco-motion, which is a great version of that song.
My husband and I sang this song at our wedding 25 years ago. We were obsessed with Richard and Linda when we first got together and wanted to be just like them. We are still singing together after all these years.
Bill Brennan I do believe her parents were Scottish, and she was certainly brought up in Glasgow. I knew her brother, actor Brian Pettifer, well known for his role in the Rab C Nesbit series. You just can't get any more Scottish than he was!
Bill Brennan Linda's mother was Scottish and she spent most of her youth in Scotland. Richard's father was Scottish but as far as I know he lived in England all his youth
This is a song that really demonstrates what a fantastic songwriter Richard Thompson is. I see him live every chance I get. Unfortunately I've never had the priviledge of seeing Linda live.
Deep artistry from the two of them . Quicksilver captured on film. Richard wrote such emotive imagery in his songs. Such a shame the songs are not more widely known. Simply beautiful. Linda looking and sounding amazing
Linda's recorded performances from back then have stood the test of time better than her contemporaries. She sings like the song is more important than the performance, but at the same time she is making it technically spot on.
+hanssvoboda what a silly a**hole comment to make ... with the benefit of living 30 + years in the future you can snidely comment on what seems dated about the lyrics ... such a clever lad ...
The 40 years that have now passed since this recording have done little to diminish its impact, a feat few can achieve , and even fewer seldom get this close to perfection ,
Richard and Linda were just magical together saw them in 1980 at Theatre Royal in Stratford East London they were magical Especially on Dimming of the Day
I so loved listening to this woman sing I once compiled a cassette of all her solo performances from the albums she recorded with Richard Thompson and used to play it every evening after I got home from work to chill out to.
This is from a performance on the British (BBC) telly program The Old Grey Whistle Test (TOGWT) which ran from 1971-1988. It had an uncanny knack of finding and featuring superb artists before they became better known or artists who SHOULD have been better known. For a treat, look on TH-cam for the TOGWT performances from Bryan Ferry and Roxy Music in their earlier days with Brian Eno.
Like a refreshing, ice-cold drink from a mountain stream on a hot day. Simple, delicious and very satisfying . This is from "The Old Gray Whistle Test", the greatest music show of all time.
Yes, but sometimes it is possible to get carried away with better and best, especially watching this. She is one among the greats. The ways Linda does "Withered and Died" is another really beautiful thing.
This song sung and played by R&L will always make me cry and break my heart. This is from someone who will likely (like millions on this planet) be alone... no one who will love, the inability to love back... If a heart is broken, then where would the home be? That will always be a personal question.
i saw them in concert in 1975 or 1997 a long time ago so not sure somewhere in the midlands and they were wonderful. Richard has always been a hero of mine.
In addition to having a great voice, Linda Thompson had great cheekbones & a lovely dimple in her chin! Oh, and Richard was (& still is) a fabulous guitar virtuoso.
Beautiful, I always think she's thinking about Nick Drake when singing this as he died only a,month before the recording of this Ogwt she was very close to him:)
It is wonderful that artists evolve and develop over time - you couldnt ever quarrel with a song of RT's he is such a craftsman songwriter and his playing is so fine - Must confess that my favourite era for him is from Liege and Lief up to First Light. The furious collaborations with Swarbrick and then the spiritual desolation/searching and then the reigious-tune-as-lovesong (which is an old tradition in Sufi Islam) Planet Waves to Street Legal is a similar peak IMO - the raw true stuff.
This is their definitive version of this song, in my opinion. Don't get me wrong, I like the versions on Hokey Pokey and Watching the Dark, but this one really nails it. The fact we also get video with the performance doesn't hurt either.
It's wonderful to be part of a small community that loves this music. I'm 70 and have love them since day one.
I always felt Linda didn't really get the recognition she deserved for her voice...
She said in a recentish interview that she loved being a darling of the music critics and didn't care about not having hit records.
Beautiful story
@@prabinprabin5490 thank you!
Wonderful
I hope you're both good vocalists because that could have been an epic train wreck for your guests! ;)
@@lbowsk thanks for the snarky reply! We are no Richard and Linda, but we're not bad either.
What a combination - his song-writing ability and the deftness of his guitar playing and her fabulous voice. Solid Gold… bless them both
I am reminded that we were all young & bright shining beings once upon a time. 🌈💖
Beautiful words my friend, a wistful and honest song
We remain so
I don't even have words for how deeply beautiful her singing is....like something from heaven ❤❤
Agree, she has a timeless beauty and clarity of phrasing that is truly astonishing
@@paulbradshaw303 💕💕
I don't know why I listen to this bloody song. I always cry.
It takes you deep in. Richard Thompson picks up a guitar but God plays. And Linda's singing is every bit as good as his playing.
That's exactly why you listen to it.
This is an example of why film and sound recordings were such important inventions. we will always have this moment in time.
I first met this song about 40 years ago, and it still moves me like a fresh open wound.
I'm a hard-hearted old bastard, but this surely brought a tear to my eye...
Linda not only has an incredible voice, but she has those classic English looks. So beautiful.
Indeed - but she's Scottish!
She was born in London and spent six years there and then moved to Glasgow. I don't know whether her heritage is Scots.
Well then... classic United Kingdom looks! She is a beauty.
One of the most hauntingly beautiful songs of all time.
I Agreed wholeheartedly
This is a song that really demonstrates what a fantastic songwriter Richard Thompson is. I see him live every chance I get. Unfortunately I've never had the priviledge of seeing Linda live.
Deep artistry from the two of them . Quicksilver captured on film. Richard wrote such emotive imagery in his songs. Such a shame the songs are not more widely known. Simply beautiful. Linda looking and sounding amazing
Give it more time. Songs as good as this will keep being discovered by new generations.
Linda's recorded performances from back then have stood the test of time better than her contemporaries. She sings like the song is more important than the performance, but at the same time she is making it technically spot on.
"Tongues talk fire and eyes cry rivers-" one of my favorite lines ever from a totally magic song
among richard's best lines ever.
79steelymatt Unfortunately followed by the ethnic slur "Indian givers"......
hanssvoboda I doubt he'd say it now.
+hanssvoboda what a silly a**hole comment to make ... with the benefit of living 30 + years in the future you can snidely comment on what seems dated about the lyrics ... such a clever lad ...
Really? I'm almost as old as Richard and I knew all about how wrong that phrase was even more than 30 years ago, so right back at you.
Loyalty one of the greatest forgotten principles in the West. This songs expressed the Beauty of Loyalty, hopefully it makes a return.
The 40 years that have now passed since this recording have done little to diminish its impact, a feat few can achieve , and even fewer seldom get this close to perfection ,
It’s close to 40 years since I first heard this song - and it still blows me away
the worlds no place when your on your own.................. beautiful. wicked song.
Still magic. 1975 blimey, how time flies..
What man in control of his faculties would walk out on Linda Thompson? Glad they get along these days.
About as great as music gets.
One of the all-time greatest guitarists/songwriters with one of the all-time greatest vocalists singing a classic.
MAGIC!!!
My favorite song from Richard and Linda Thompson!!!
HAPPY (68th) BIRTHDAY, LINDA!!!
(born 23 August 1947)
this song makes me cry!😥
The World's no place when you're on your own..A heart needs a home.Beautiful sentiment and beautiful performance!
breath-takingly
jaw-droppingly
stunningly
beautiful
I have watched this about 20 times at least this evening and for some reason I cant help clicking the replay button.
Her beauty is captivating.
I'm totally moved by the musical wonders Richard & Linda Thompson did together!
I love this song. I keep playing it over and over again.
Linda Thompson, beautiful woman, beautiful voice ❤
Richard and Linda were just magical together saw them in 1980 at Theatre Royal in Stratford East London they were magical
Especially on Dimming of the Day
Her voice is perfection.
Love the understated menace of the presenter
This has made me laugh a startling number of times now. Great work
Lol, he was always known as Whispering Bob (Bob Harris)
I so loved listening to this woman sing I once compiled a cassette of all her solo performances from the albums she recorded with Richard Thompson and used to play it every evening after I got home from work to chill out to.
What a wonderful idea, that must have been blissful 😊❤
What insight to a beautiful souls song to sign along thank you Richard Thompson
This made me cry
Yes. Indeed.
Machiavelli 2050 it still does to me.
Linda's phrasing is outstanding.
The beauty of this made me cry.
A heart needs a home... but it will only find that home in itself...

One of the greatest singers these isles ever produced
Heart rending...Linda's voice is right in my range and what a delight to sing with her on this song :-)
Genius. utterly beautiful.
A wonderful song. It has everything.
This is a beautiful song. It is nice to see a husband/wife duo. I collaborate with my very young cousin, but it is definitely not the same.
love this,a beautiful song .............lonely people of the world ,wake up before its too late
73 and still love thier music, memories of a love that got away!😢😊
This is one of the most heartbreaking songs ever written. It gets me every time.
Truly magical !
Absolutely incredible ❤
Like a refreshing, ice-cold drink from a mountain stream on a hot day. Simple, delicious and very satisfying . This is from "The Old Gray Whistle Test", the greatest music show of all time.
My favourite song of theirs along with Dimming of The Day and every other song they ever made!!!! what a beautiful performance!! Lovely 5*****
So glad to have finally found this song. So good.
This is so incredibly beautiful and painful.
what a voice
Yes, but sometimes it is possible to get carried away with better and best, especially watching this. She is one among the greats. The ways Linda does "Withered and Died" is another really beautiful thing.

What a truly beautiful song, wonderfully sung.
I had a double DVD of the "best" of Whistle Test. Why this wasn't on there I'll never know. Only just discovered this song today. Truely beautiful.
I have the four-disc boxset and it is included. A very haunting performance
Samuel Simmons it's on a follow up cd check it out
What's so right about this is what's so wrong with so much music today: two voices and one guitar and stunning beauty!
fantastic beautiful song...
This song slays me every time I hear it. Beautiful and heart-wrenching.
Tough exposed song, done with beautiful ease
My goodness - I'd forgotten about this song. Laden with irony given how they ended up - beautiful none the less.
i saw them in concert in 1975 or 1997 a long time ago so not sure somewhere in the midlands and they were wonderful. Richard has always been a hero of mine.

My god
Perfection
melts me.
For June my love of 41 years & wife of 40 years. ❤️🇬🇧🏴
Nothing wrong with coming to appreciate a great artist late in the day. Great art is always gaining new fans. Glad to have your fresh perspective.
Simply wonderful
Beautiful song beautifully performed. Witn the bonus that, 15 seconds in, you've completely forgotten about Whisperin' Bob
It's been so long since I've heard this song. Like seeing an old friend. I forgot I much I loved it, until I heard it again.
They nailed it every time.
How I love Whispering Bob!
a staggering work - truely great music
still love her she has the passion
Sheer perfection.
Wow - I know Richard's an outstanding guitarist - but this number with his wife is a real gem.
One of the finest, most moving songs on all of OGWT. Such a shame the ending was so abruptly cut😞
Beautiful, I always think she's thinking about Nick Drake when singing this as he died only a,month before the recording of this Ogwt she was very close to him:)
+Chris Moore It's about God (Allah, I suppose). It's about she and Richard converting to Sufism, a mystical form of Islam.
This is the best video in the internets.
Beautiful song
Jeez they're forever amazing! All the clips from this show are incredible. Heartsrings!
Utter simplicity, perfection and sheer class
Brilliant - some of Richard's best work was with Linda.
Memories great memories still sounds great
what a beautiful sound they are both amazing lots of love Kinnon.
absolutely stunning, thanks for sharing!
What became of Linda? So talented. Xx
This is such a pleasure! Thank you for the post x
Quite beautiful.
What happens when one of the world's premier songwriters annd guitarist, as well as a fine singer, marries one of the world's great singers...
This song makes me cry. Sheer brilliance
It is wonderful that artists evolve and develop over time - you couldnt ever quarrel with a song of RT's he is such a craftsman songwriter and his playing is so fine - Must confess that my favourite era for him is from Liege and Lief up to First Light.

What great delivery. Everyone on TV should aspire to the hosts level
Hermosa cancion❤❤❤
Thank you for sharing this precious moment ❤️❤️
