One of my own favorites. A guy I dated learned it over night and played it on my daughter's little blue kid guitar and 1 string was missing. He still broke my heart but what a special gift it was. It's in my special memories. 🦩
Sure, the song is at least partly inspired by English folk singer, Anne Briggs, who led a kind of mythical existence in the 60s, travelling round Britain and Ireland and living wildly. So if you read the rest of the lyrics and a bit about Anne Briggs' story, you understand a bit more about what Richard is saying here - the romanticism of her lifestyle and also, perhaps, the sadness of it? Anyway - check out Anne Briggs and her songs.
Beeswing, Dimming of the Day, Vincent Black Lightning...these three songs alone place RT in a pantheon of the greatest lyricists ever. The pictures they paint, the sound of his voice, his musicianship, it's just mindboggling talent this man has
Vincent Black Lightening seemed to describe my dad's life pretty well, he was even called Jimmy. Played it at his funeral and to this day i can't get through the whole song. Richard Thompson is a legend.
Many wonderful poets and songwriters capture the mixed blessing of being alive as a human, but nobody has ever captured it better in a single song as RT has here. Utterly, gut wrenchingly beautiful.
Driving down a busy road, I heard this song on the radio. I had to pull over to listen it out. I could vision the girl. the same spirit as my one lost love from 45 years before She was her own thing, wanted to visit Darwin, I was well employed in Perth. She left one night. I never found out where she went. I miss her still.
I was driving (through suburban Melbourne) one night a few decades ago listening to one of the music shows on RN when this came on. I was immediately and completely carried away by it, such an incredible song in every way, lyrically, melodically, the story, the spirit, the performance, everything. Above all else it's a truly COMPLETE song, perfectly realised. Once heard, never forgotten.
back a century or 2, the Beeswing who set England ablaze -- they made a hot movie about her -- was Lady Caroline Lamb. tho married, her big squeeze was Lord Byron ("Mad, bad, and dangerous to know.").
"You might be lord of half the world, you'll not own me as well." I like to think this is one of my husband's favorites. (I wish he'd play it for me more often.) He met me when I was a laundry girl, and he took me out of there. We're together now more than 30 years.

I agree though I'm compelled to say perhaps you were not literally 'stunned.' I'm sorry. I'm drunk and tired and my mom was a grammar Nazi. (In defiance of mother, I'm assuming that "Nazi" should be capitalized, and I'm not checking first.)
I'm trying to work while I listen to this and it's impossible. The song is too good. A love of Richard Thompson is one of the best gifts my dad ever gave me. We went as a family to see him together so many times when I was a kid. The memory of it brings a tear to my eye, and a big smile. Thank you Richard.
I had the privilege of attending a performance of Richards, January 14 this year, 2023 at Outpost in the Burbs, Montclair New Jersey. Absolutely Awesome. And in all honesty, If I was just listening to this and not seeing his younger appearance, you could not tell a lick of difference in his singing or playing between this and the performance then! He's a force of nature!
"The last I heard she was sleeping rough, back on the Derby beat. White Horse in her hip pocket and a wolfhound at her feet." I don't think there are two lines of lyric in all of music that I love more.

One of the best songs ever. The lyrics, the guitar playing, the performance, the combination of all its elements communicates something beyond your regular good song.
I wouldn't say underrated for those that are aware of his considerable talent, superb musicianship and amazing songwriting ability will always bestow upon him all the accolades he richly deserves.
Saw him last night. So stunned how consistently good his songwriting is thru all the decades. And his performance is top notch as this vid demonstrates. What a freaking gem.
This song always reminds me of the young people I knew in 1968 - Josh, Toni, Annie, Joe, Gareth, Cindy, Jan. Josh died the following year. I wonder how many of those young people survive.
Possibly still has. Who knows what she still gets up to while washing the dishes or whatever..... She is only 79 and at 75 Richard Thompson still has a solid singing voice.
I am English and always fascinated by hard it is to create English music which avoids being a pastiche of American music especially in terms of lyrical content. I write poetry myself and struggle to avoid the shackles of people like Dylan. In this song Richard Thompson achieves this to a remarkable extent
this man, is the most underrated artist,he is, simply brilliant, and, he should be, way more known, but, then again, its cool, secret heros, like him, are more my kind of artist...

My all time favourite folk song. A working class hero pining for lost love, a better life. Could their be more beautiful and sad a story? Makes me cry every damn time!. Love you Richard

It matters not how many times I hear this song, I can go months without listening to it and yet each time the result is the same, I end up in tears. I wonder what it feels like to have someone adore a person as much as the character in this song did? It takes someone very strong to let go of someone or something they love, to make that person happy.
I have done that. After four years she said I was not who she thought I was. That night I cried so hard my body racked until there were no more tears to come, only heart break. The next day I moved out.
I've been a RT fan since the mid -80s . This song is so beautiful. In an interview from Acoustic Guitar magazine in 1995 Richard talks of the people he knew dropping out from accountancy and the like to live on communes etc. The song has that longing and nostalgia. It's so beautifully written , lyric wise and his guitar playing of the highest order. RT is truly one of the greatest. EVER.
I've been vaguely aware of Richard Thompson over the years. Had one Fairport Album i liked & was a big fan of Steeleye Span. Heard this song on Sirius XM Deep Tracks on my way to work & almost had to pull over to manage the tears. If you have ever loved a woman like this consider yourself beyond blessed.
This is an incredibly good song. The lyrics, the melody, the delivery -- all coming straight from the heart, and in our mind's eye we can picture the two at each stage of the song with brilliant clarity. Simply amazing.
This was Richard's encore at his Bristol gig last week. Clearly is a deep memory for him. The song always conjures up the spirit of Sandy Denny when I hear it.
He has been quoted as saying Sandy and Anne Briggs are inspirations for the song, plus a homeless guy he met. Not autobiographical though. He never even worked in the Steamie in Caldrum Street (Dundee, its a real thing, or was in the mid 50's).
A friend covered this. We were sat on the last train back to London after a funeral. She played this to the few people in the carriage and there was a moment of calm whilst the train carried us homeward bound. I've been in love with this song ever since.

It doesn't matter who is a better singer. It is how you express the song. Thompson clearly express realness to what he is singing as it is his experiences, he wrote it. It's not about having the strongest voice, it's about passion.
Except strangely his voice has moe and mor powerful as the years have gone by. With Sweet Warrior he hit a peak Guns are the Tongues in particular and Dads going to Kill me as well.

One of the great love songs of all time. I've seen him perform this many times and it always moves me to tears like the first time. Genius songwriting and performing.
This is one of the beautiful songs that evokes nostalgia in a way that is hard to explain, I'm sure it's different for every individual life led, one of the great story songs I've ever heard, if not the greatest
Richard helped found Fairport Convention, inspired by all the American songwriter singers. In 1967, though, when Dylan delved back into his heritage (See: "The Basement Tapes"), Thompson began making new songs with deep old roots - and he's still England's answer to The Band.
One of the greatest story songs ever written. His understated guitar combined with an incredible story add up to an experience that can draw tears from me at times.
RT - a true poet, singer, troubadour of our times and his guitar playing is just astounding. A "rare kind",! Love the post from carollizc, "real stuff, fine as single malt and enduring as stone" ,, just wonderful.....

His understated guitar combined with an incredible story add up to an experience that can draw tears from me at times.
brilliant guitarist, truly one of a kind
i heard a boy sing and play this tonight in Dublin - just listened to this and it's immensely beautiful
Would that be in cassidys??
No, it was in the international bar,a guy called Fionn!
Like Van Zandt's Loretta I can almost taste the memory of the wild love that got away...
richard thompson is just brilliant... his voice.. the atmosphere... lovely
RT - a true poet, singer, troubadour of our times and his guitar playing is just astounding. A "rare kind",! Love the post from carollizc, "real stuff, fine as single malt and enduring as stone" ,, just wonderful.....
The best ballad ever. How it's played with one pair of hands...
Possibly my favorite song ever
What can you say about this song that hasn't already been said...
"As long as there's no price on love ill stay..."
Magic
Love that line .
Genius lyrics, fantastic guitar playing , thank you Richard and many thanks to Cleapatr for uploading .
No one does Beeswing as well as Richard Thompson, without a doubt.
His talent is stunning. Skills honed over hours turned into years rings true: just like his music. Thank you for this
who cares if this is the best or Christy? This, by RT, is pure genius. I have seen him do it twice. If i had a chance i would go tomorrow to see it again.
