The first five Fairport Convention albums with Richard Thompson are pretty flawless, they were never the same without him. He has released so much great music since then it's kind of criminal that he isn't more well known.
Saw him last week. Beeswing brought me to tears. This morning I’ve been listening to covers of Beeswing . First off, no one is able to play guitar like RT so each rendition is in a deficit which they must recover in their singing. NO ONE’S voice imparts the sense of loss and pain that RT does. This is a sad song of reminiscence and loss! Some versions make it a happy dance song!! Just my take.
Sufism might be the kind of rigid prescription for how to live your life that stops you ending up an addict. I don't think Linda liked it too much though.
@@mythgreatbritain But when he was in England he played English style folk - and with Fairport developed Folk Rock. I thought Fairport was a great band - better than the sum of their parts. I don't think Sandy or Richard reached their peaks as soloists. Thompson was a great guitarist and changed the way guitars were used in folk music (a bit like Dylan in the US). Sandy was at her best with Fairport singing that style of folk/rock that they developed. I was really interested in Linda's interviews here. I didn't realise she went off the rails for a while. Sad to see some of the interviewees here have since passed away.

Beeswing, now that's a song! And I totally agree with the point about pain and loss
Wow! That is EXCELLENT! Thanks so much for uploading and sharing it.
Such a cool guy - saw him again at Cropredy this year.
My appreciation for him grows with time
What a voice Linda has….she ‘aint kiddin’
Amazing, despite early tragedies RT did not end up with bad habits.

Thank you.
Fairport and Richard makes me feel proud to be English. They are the quintessential English group.
Which is why he lives in the states.

Wonderful backstories!
All this talk about him as a songwriter. . . well, OK. But what about the fact that he's one of the most unique and brilliant guitarists ever ? ? ? ?
Well, we know that already don't we? At least his fans and admirers do.
Changed the use of guitars in folk music.
What is the name of the songs starting at about 4:45 and 2:43
If you've ever been married to a Scottish woman - you will understand Linda's position and actions.
He's left the next one now for a younger model - very religious . . .
I love everything about this man but I have admit the Muslim thing makes me a bit queasy.
He is a Sufi I think - not the same thing - especially regarding westerners and hippies
Why does that matter?

A solid talent from the tip of his toes to the top of his head. There's not many of those around.
