Axial Capra 1.9 RTR, is it any good? My first impressions...

  • The Axial Capra has got to be one of the best dedicated RC Crawlers out there (mass produced) Why did I buy the Ready to Run and not the Builders kit?
    My plan is to gradually upgrade this and see what the progression and appreciate the upgrades. It's easy to buy a kit and throw every upgrade going, but then you don't really see the progression.
    Anyway, first will be a set of new wheels and tyres, and then a Holmes Hobby motor, and finally I may try the Hobbywing AXE system which is meant to be the best brushless crawler set up.
    I bought mine from ModelSport in the UK. Cheapest price, next day delivery!

    first glimpse of the thumbnail I was near expecting Danchee RidgeRock, which really has a whole lot going for it (insane flex and 4WS!) for a $120 budget. Capra is really capable, watched many videos about it, one showed the good old school pen spring shock mod.

    Great video Phil. I enjoyed watching your first run with the Capra, and what a couple of perfect locations. It did very well out of the box. I think Axials are really good rigs bone stock. I recently bought a brand new Gen 1 SCX10 Deadbolt and I'm always going to run it totally stock. No upgrades at all. Nothing. I have 9 other Axial crawlers/trailers and they all have various different hop ups, and I want to see how the Deadbolt will compare over the coming years. I have faith I won't be disappointed with it. One of my Wraiths is 8 years old with plenty of miles on it and still has its original plastic suspension links which are still going strong. Your Capra should last you many happy years, especially after you add your upgrades. But I was totally surprised to learn about the lack of grease. Seems the company may have gone downhill a bit since they were bought out by Horizon. No grease in a £400+ RTR RC is totally unacceptable in my opinion.

    • @TomleyRC
      @TomleyRC  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I am really impressed! I almost want to buy a Kit and build that up, and then leave this one bone stock! I had an SCX10 a while back, that was a nice truck!
      I was thinking today, everybody shouts down the budget models for being poorly made, or things falling off.... like the WPL's where the driveshafts are a bit weak, but when it comes to stuff like this (the lack of grease), and Traxxas with their weak driveshafts on some of their RC's....,it's almost as if you are meant to except that as they are a bigger brand, and just buy the upgrades. Strange how it's ok to happen on a £400 RC, but not on a £30 lol

    I love the moody misty quarry as a place to showcase this crawler. It really does benefit from those portal axles, with a nice low C of G and excellent ground clearance. I was amazed @ 8:25, for example - what a machine!
    I quite agree that it can be more satisfying to upgrade an RTR than to buy the kit version and build in upgrades as you assemble it.
    This way you get the "before and after" comparison and the attendant glow of satisfaction on first driving the upgraded car.

    • @TomleyRC
      @TomleyRC  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Exactly Del, I like to see progress.... rather than chuck lots of money at it straight away, and not really anything to compare it to. The Quarry was very 'moody'...the Sun came out about an hr later! I didn't notice the mist over the water until I edited it.... looks almost like a volcanic stream.... in central Lincolnshire lol

      @@TomleyRC I´m glad that you went there when you did - sunny videos are bright and cheerful but the atmosphere in the quarry suited the Capra´s mean, purposeful styling perfectly : )

    Hi Phil! Glad I kept watching, I thought that water might come into this video at some point! The last bit was the best, cool how you climbed out of the little stream. Looks like a great rig, but still can't believe the tight B@sTrd$ at the factory don't put some grease on the gears!!! :P

    • @TomleyRC
      @TomleyRC  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks Mark. I found that little stream on my back to the car. I had to get all the camera bits out again. Unfortunately someone had dumped a load of clothes and food in it a bit further down so only had a small bit to work with. I think i may take a couple of bin bags and some glove's next time and clear the area to get some quality river running! (You know I like a bit of water!). Marine grease and tools are already sorted for this evening!

    Curios?
    Any trouble with your dig servo? I could hear your servo struggling at its end-point once you engaged dig.
    I recently purchased a RTR Capra and found it challenging to adjust end-points on dig as the manual instructs.
    Happy Crawling!

    • @TomleyRC

    • @TomleyRC
      @TomleyRC  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It was actually a bit concerning at first. A Sleeping bag, a bag of clothes (the blue bag), a kids denim jacket, kids lunch box including food, and a hand bag. After a bit of thought, I had it in my head that it was probably belongings from a car that had been broken into and then the stuff with no value dumped. No bodies thank fully!
