Wow, the hate shown toward Behringer from some in this thread is crazy. Daniel is showing off the One here, but if you watch the Deepmind videos he has done, he really likes it as well, and the Model D. Now obviously he can't show his personal feelings about these instruments unless he qualifies them first, but to me it's fairly obvious he really enjoys ALL of them. I am now the owner of a Deepmind 12D and the Model D - from Sweetwater - and my experience so far is that they are both excellent sounding synths, and yes, I've played a Minimoog many times - so I have experience enough to make a decent comparison. Moog Music (as it exists today) is a small company that makes, for the most part, a boutique line of products that they hand assembled from good quality parts, but by no means are their production models that much higher in quality than other synth manufacturers, including Behringer, I dare say. Ironically, the only synth I've ever had to return to the factory to be fixed under warranty was my Moog Sub Phatty - so while one person does not a statistical sample make, it is of note to me. The Moog One is a huge synth - Moog's new flagship. Those who choose to purchase it will no doubt be treated to a great synth that will age well, along with Moog's full support behind it. However, those who snark and look down on Behringer (Moog fanboy or not) just come off as bitter and angry. The market has already spoken - the Deepmind and the Model D are excellent synths, and their price is really a secondary issue (although nice). The Deepmind, like the One, is a 21st century synth based on analog technology combined with digital controls. The One has a lot more in the way of voices and features than the Deepmind - but honestly you would expect that from a synth costing ten times more than the other. The Model D and the Minimoog are different monsters - one is just the module, the other is a full keyboard. I have played extensively on the Minimoog - and frankly the keyboard doesn't add all that much, since keyboards in general are very subjective to begin with, very much a matter of personal preference. It didn't make me cringe, nor did it make me want to spend $3500 just because of the keybed. The sound of the Minimoog and the sound of the Model D have been compared ad-infinitum online already - but considering the Model D is pretty much a reverse-engineered copy (I'll leave the politics of that to the companies involved, but from my consumer perspective I really could care less) of the Minimoog, of course the sound is going to be very, very close if not identical. If you have watched the video that shows oscillator stability between the Model D and other synths, you'll see that the Model D does have some drift that very possibly the Minimoog has addressed with their new models (although old Minimoogs were notorious for pitch drift issues as well). Overall, the Moog One is a great synth. So is the Deepmind. So is the Minimoog. So is the Model D. Moog is making a boutique synth for high-end professionals. Behringer is making synths for the common musician, and their prices reflect that. Both use parts that are acquired from third-world countries, both companies are serving their customers well with products that are what they desire, and both companies have plenty to offer that the other does not. But regardless, subtractive synthesis is really just one color of a very large palette - so personally I would rather spend 1-2K on a great poly analog (or even a mono synth) and have lots left over to buy whatever else I want, or I can blow an entire year's worth of equipment budget or more buying "One" - which, although is very very nice and has lots to offer in the way of control, sound and finesse, is still at the end of the day a subtractive synthesis analog synth (beast, yes - but still analog subtractive synthesis). Because it IS the 21st century and not 1978, I seriously don't really get the appeal vs. the high price. But then again, I don't drive a Mercedes, I have never owned or even been in a Jaguar and don't really operate in that financial reality - I'm more the common guy that Behringer makes their gear for. But one thing is for sure - Sweetwater and Daniel think there is a place for all of these synths in the market, and there's a synth for every budget. I agree with that, and I'm glad we have the choice.
@@final_mile_music9713 It does come down to priorities, too. If the One did things that I needed for my work, I'd be all over it. That's a business expense and I can justify the price. In my real world, it's not my principal work and I can't justify that much synth for fun only. Even if I had that much disposable cash I would probably spend it on something other than the One. To me, the One is a beautifully constructed synth that I will never have a need for. For that matter, so was the Korg ARP 2600 remake. I didn't get that either. But I will spend a few hundred on a cheaper alternative. It's all about what's important to you.
@@BillVincent i absolutely agree with you. It’s rare that consumer electronics have the soul and longevity of, say, a beautiful violin or piano. And that’s where instruments like the One come in. It’s not just a tool but something that is beautifully built and that someone can connect to emotionally as well as physically. A bit like a super car, for most it’s unjustified. But for some, it will bring joy for years. I think we should celebrate that humans still build things of beauty and soul like this. I have a subsequent 37 arriving today to join my studio. I’m expecting it to be beautiful. And to sound amazing. But one day, I’ll be getting a One. As a kid that grew up lusting after a Jupiter 8 and it being completely unattainable, the One will represent the pinnacle for me. I’m just glad that it exists.
Just got one . Coming from and still living in the modular world, this is the closest that you can get to the modular possibilities of eurorack (in my case) from a fixed-architecture analog poly synth. Minus the spaghetti too :) Thank you Daniel for this detailed introduction to this powerful Beast
Thank you Daniel/Sweetwater for helping me better understand Moog One. My thinking exactly at the end, this will be the end of synthesizer hardware purchase for me/studio. I will grow old with this One.
ShoRoc Production i am thinking this is why some in the synth industry have been cynical or underwhelmed by this synth, because essentially it stops the constant looking for The One, the chase ends. therefore less need for future synths (of this type). potentially ending a generation of analogue synth development.

This synth will definitely not be the end of anything, except maybe big breakthroughs at Moog. 99% of synth buyers will never set foot in this price category, so I hardly doubt that the Moog One will end analogue synth design in any way. It's an awesome synth though, but so far from the reality for the masses.
@@BiGreDNoSecoMpAny I don't see why 8k is much for that synth. It's actually quite cheap. 48 VCOs, with most modern circuits, and the (luxury, but nice-to -have) built-in Eventide FX. There is no competitor, but if I would buy 16 ModelDs from Behringer, well that's already 5.5k. Add to this the three engines, the Eventide and the nasty modulation possibilities, the convenience to have something that is an "analog workstation", and the keyboard (even if it is quite questionable, I don't like it much actually)...
This video is well worth the watch, worth pausing and going back over to understand just how good this synth is. This and the GAK video really show how fabulous the One is. I’m genuinely thinking it might be worth financing

Ya talked me into it. Just ordered a One. That beautiful noise section reminded me of the very cool, non-classical based album by Wendy Carlos called Sonic Seasonings.
I've watched so many terrible videos of this synth that I actually changed my mind about wanting one but then I watched this video and now I want it again. God DAMN it!
Update: I bought one and it really is the most incredible analog poly I’ve ever played and I’ve owned 137 synths and played many more. I don’t know why most people doing demos of it have no idea how to make a good sound with it
Impressive review. Really shows that, for the most part, the Moog One does every single feature better than other synths (better LFO, better OSC...). I believe the review states that there are so many slots in the mod matrix, it's hard to see that there's a limit. In another reviews, I heard that there actually was a limit: 20 slots (to be confirmed by someone who owns one please). As a synth user myself, I own several that have 16 slots (per timbre when it applies) and one which has 32 slots. I've already run out of slots with 16. This happens easily when you need to apply a same effect to several destinations, like applying a mod to all shapes, but there's no Shape123 destination, but only shape1, shape2... you see my point. I find that 20 slots is a lot, but sometimes, you'll still run of out of them. Maybe one reason you wouldn't run out of them that much with the Moog One, is the lack of certain very funny sources, like OSC wave out (What? That's missing?! Seriously?). Sad that the Moog One doesn't provide this obvious one for an analog polysynth. I guess, we won't be able to reproduce some Elka Synthex fun like Jarre's Laser Harp (Synthex preset 46), which requires shape cross mod. Also, the lack of free routing FM (even exponential only) won't consume our precious mod matrix slots. Conclusion: The best mod matrix in terms of feature (the first I see with functions (limit, quadratic, cubic and of course linear)!!!! So good), but sadly lacking the sources (wave out) and destinations (lienar FM, grouped dest like on DSI/Sequential Pro 2 & alike) we would have wanted to play with. The Matriarch does that in mono and I heard in reviews quite well. Negative voltage pitch with inverted shape would also be nice like the cross mod on Korg EMX-1 (FM cross mod allows to go past zero in the negative range, osc with negative input generate the same freq as in the positive range, but the shape is reversed => very metallic nice sound effect and pitched correctly to the keyboard). Also, most synths lack the polyfingered transposition like Yamaha stuff or the matrix arp of the Arturia Polybrute, which makes sequences not only transpose but be altered live not needing a scale force (which is another partial option which only helps to stay in tune with a given scale). I would have loved to see the left hand of the Moog One alter a sequence by applying a chord transposition, rather than a single fingered one (a firmware update? Please!).
They talk about "peak oil"...this is peak "subtractive synthesis". It's a masterpiece and doesn't get better than this - well done Moog. Looks like you were watching what outfits like Korg and Yamaha were doing with controllability and applied it to a monster Moog. It's a pity I'm a guitarist with very limited keyboard chops otherwise I might consider getting one of these. As it stands it would be like casting pearls before swine - it'd be wasted on me. I gather most of the knockers here will be the ones that can't afford one so they crap all over it and whine about the price. This thing is not a Behringer 'knock-off', it's something that a lot of extremely talented people sweated beads of sweat to create and it's magnificent. It's serious kit for serious (and/or confortably off) musicians.
this is a “now i don’t have to find a jupiter 8 that i’ll have to get serviced every few months because it’s so old” i hope someone does some jupiter patches for it!
Think about the kind of people that know enough about synths to have a Jupiter 8, probably the kind of work they do (music or otherwise) to afford a Jupiter 8 and then you'll most probably come to the conclusion that no one is going to sell their Jupiter 8 for this. They'll just add the One to their arsenal. The Jupiter 8 is a discrete synth and of the synths that defines the vintage Roland tone, which is very different to the sound of One.
Why no multi-drive? I'm interested in hearing it's mixer / amp / filter overdrive capabilities. Can you LFO modulate the different stages of the ADSR? Can you easily edit notes in the sequencer whilst it's playing without it scrolling across the screen to the next notes? The glide seems very steppy - is there a way to smooth it rather than hear the quantized notes? Is there a simple way to reduce the snappiness of your envelope so the attack can be right to the left without introducing clicks? Lets hear some FM please. I'd like to hear the audio uncompressed on some kind of streaming site if possible. I'm sure it sounds better than I'm hearing.
I don't get it, is the mod wheel automatically assigned to modulate osc pitch on all Moog's, or am I just too used to digital synthesizers not having anything pre routed? I don't think I've ever seen somebody with a Moog go in and do the mod wheel routing. They just touch the thing and it's already set up lol
Behringer rebuilds synths whose patents have run out - not the Moog One. And if so - compare then One to a DM12, and you‘ll be aware that $599 is ridiculous.

Amazing, clear explanation of the many insane features within this giant synth. Would love if some one would put the time counts down for each new segment he delineates (for example: sequencing-3:21; noise-5:41, gate-length-33:34, etc etc). This mode is rarely, if ever, used. 3.Omni Off/Poly - Device responds to MIDI data only on one particular channel, and is polyphonic. This is the normal mode for most keyboards that are not functioning multitimbrally. 4.Omni Off/Mono - Device responds to MIDI data only on one particular channel, and is monophonic. Multi Mode - Used by many devices for multitimbral operation. An expanded version of Mode 3, Multi Mode allows the device to respond to several independent MIDI channels at once, with each being polyphonic. (See also WFTD “Multitimbral“) Mono Mode - Used for MIDI guitar applications, Mono Mode is an expanded version of Mode 4, allowing for six Omni Off/Monophonic channels to be used at once, one for each string of the controller. Hi Borge. Moog One allows the ability for each of the three Synths to either all follow the same MIDI Channel (Off, 1 to 16) or to choose the MIDI Channel for each of the three Synths. There currently is no Omni more (all MIDI Channels are received) or Mono Mode for guitarists. But there is a list on the Moog Forum filled with ideas from future Moog One owners. If either of these is very important to you, feel free to share it on the Moog Forum's *Moog One* page.
Ok! What I need is one midi channel for each voice, Mono Mode - Used for MIDI guitar applications. Maybe a firmware opdate, like the Roland mks-70 have? Thanks!

13:26 I'm a bit confused here. Ring modulators are not supposed to stay in tune. If they stay in tune, they're not doing ring modulation! To stay in tune, the output frequencies would have to vary geometrically with (be a multiple of) the input frequencies - but ring modulator outputs are supposed to vary linearly...
I am sorry but to my ears, this defeats every analog poly on the market, in fact it maybe the most exciting Poly since the Alesis Andromeda. It’s on another level.
Instead of TELLING us the wonderful things this does. SHOW us HOW you are doing these marvelous things. I still have no idea how to apply things like filter changes or ratcheting within a step in a sequence; I know they do them, I can't figure out HOW, and the manual doesn't tell me. Seems the ONE does poly glissando, thats great, could you tell me how please?
The LFO at 1000Hz seems to disappear. I like to se a Demo using a SAW wave on the LFO at high rate modulating a tri waveform on a OSC at a high range to se how precise it is. I did try the LFO on the SUB-37 and it is not precise at all. Is it me or just this demo. In my headphones it sounds like this synth is noisy.
Does anybody know the benefit of having 16 voices over 8? Is it just more notes in a chord? I just bought the 8 but I have the chance to switch it to the 16 voice for another $1,500. Wondering if that's worth it? I just traded my Sub Phatty, Juno 106 and Arp 2600m + cash for Moog One and this video is making me glad I did.

This thing is amazing, my only gripe is that this is definitely not safe for gigging. It would be cool if they could make a little less expensive 4 or 6 voice version of this, but besides that it's great.

I think in the eagerness to show off the onboard effects, the core character of the Moog One is a bit obfuscated. More dry run demos with just a light touch of onboard FX will really showcase this beauty.

Hi JubileeGiggles. Yes, the Moog One has Sine wave LFOs, but only Triangle, Saw, Ramp, Square and Pulse audio oscillators (plus every shape in between those). But you can use either (or both ) Low Pass Filters to change a Triangle wave into a Sine wave. Thanks for watching!
Hi Marco, FM did happen, but I probably should have turned up the depth as I went faster. Since the LFOs top out at 1kHz, your better bet would be to use the hard-wired FM section that modulates a full-frequency Moog One VCO with one of the other two VCOs (selectable with a dedicated button). This also gives you the ability to control the level and filter routing of the FM sound as it has its own dedicated Mixer VOLUME knob, and VSF and LADDER routing buttons.

To be fair, it costs more to create than to clone. All power to Behringer, but I’d save and wait for the original every time. Each to their own.

Impressive review. Really shows that, for the most part, the Moog One does every single feature better than other synths (better LFO, better OSC...).
I believe the review states that there are so many slots in the mod matrix, it's hard to see that there's a limit. In another reviews, I heard that there actually was a limit:
20 slots (to be confirmed by someone who owns one please).
As a synth user myself, I own several that have 16 slots (per timbre when it applies) and one which has 32 slots.
I've already run out of slots with 16. This happens easily when you need to apply a same effect to several destinations, like applying a mod to all shapes, but there's no Shape123 destination, but only shape1, shape2... you see my point. I find that 20 slots is a lot, but sometimes, you'll still run of out of them. Maybe one reason you wouldn't run out of them that much with the Moog One, is the lack of certain very funny sources, like OSC wave out (What? That's missing?! Seriously?). Sad that the Moog One doesn't provide this obvious one for an analog polysynth. I guess, we won't be able to reproduce some Elka Synthex fun like Jarre's Laser Harp (Synthex preset 46), which requires shape cross mod. Also, the lack of free routing FM (even exponential only) won't consume our precious mod matrix slots.
Conclusion:
The best mod matrix in terms of feature (the first I see with functions (limit, quadratic, cubic and of course linear)!!!! So good), but sadly lacking the sources (wave out) and destinations (lienar FM, grouped dest like on DSI/Sequential Pro 2 & alike) we would have wanted to play with. The Matriarch does that in mono and I heard in reviews quite well. Negative voltage pitch with inverted shape would also be nice like the cross mod on Korg EMX-1 (FM cross mod allows to go past zero in the negative range, osc with negative input generate the same freq as in the positive range, but the shape is reversed => very metallic nice sound effect and pitched correctly to the keyboard). Also, most synths lack the polyfingered transposition like Yamaha stuff or the matrix arp of the Arturia Polybrute, which makes sequences not only transpose but be altered live not needing a scale force (which is another partial option which only helps to stay in tune with a given scale). I would have loved to see the left hand of the Moog One alter a sequence by applying a chord transposition, rather than a single fingered one (a firmware update? Please!).
This guy gets PAID to play around with this stuff.

They talk about "peak oil"...this is peak "subtractive synthesis". It's a masterpiece and doesn't get better than this - well done Moog. Looks like you were watching what outfits like Korg and Yamaha were doing with controllability and applied it to a monster Moog. It's a pity I'm a guitarist with very limited keyboard chops otherwise I might consider getting one of these. As it stands it would be like casting pearls before swine - it'd be wasted on me.
I gather most of the knockers here will be the ones that can't afford one so they crap all over it and whine about the price. This thing is not a Behringer 'knock-off', it's something that a lot of extremely talented people sweated beads of sweat to create and it's magnificent. It's serious kit for serious (and/or confortably off) musicians.
This is a "sell your Jupiter 8" synthesizer. Yeah, I said it..... :). But rather, keep both.
THIS IS A SELL everything synth, nothing will get used any more so you may as well get the cash.

Think about the kind of people that know enough about synths to have a Jupiter 8, probably the kind of work they do (music or otherwise) to afford a Jupiter 8 and then you'll most probably come to the conclusion that no one is going to sell their Jupiter 8 for this. They'll just add the One to their arsenal. The Jupiter 8 is a discrete synth and of the synths that defines the vintage Roland tone, which is very different to the sound of One.

Why no multi-drive? I'm interested in hearing it's mixer / amp / filter overdrive capabilities. Can you LFO modulate the different stages of the ADSR? Can you easily edit notes in the sequencer whilst it's playing without it scrolling across the screen to the next notes? The glide seems very steppy - is there a way to smooth it rather than hear the quantized notes? Is there a simple way to reduce the snappiness of your envelope so the attack can be right to the left without introducing clicks? Lets hear some FM please. I'd like to hear the audio uncompressed on some kind of streaming site if possible. I'm sure it sounds better than I'm hearing.

I don't get it, is the mod wheel automatically assigned to modulate osc pitch on all Moog's, or am I just too used to digital synthesizers not having anything pre routed? I don't think I've ever seen somebody with a Moog go in and do the mod wheel routing. They just touch the thing and it's already set up lol

Behringer rebuilds synths whose patents have run out - not the Moog One. And if so - compare then One to a DM12, and you‘ll be aware that $599 is ridiculous.

Amazing, clear explanation of the many insane features within this giant synth. Would love if some one would put the time counts down for each new segment he delineates (for example: sequencing-3:21; noise-5:41, gate-length-33:34, etc etc). 1.Omni On/Poly - Device responds to MIDI data regardless of channel, and is polyphonic. (See WFTD “Polyphonic“)
2.Omni On/Mono - Device responds to MIDI data regardless of channel, and is monophonic. This mode is rarely, if ever, used.
3.Omni Off/Poly - Device responds to MIDI data only on one particular channel, and is polyphonic. This is the normal mode for most keyboards that are not functioning multitimbrally.
4.Omni Off/Mono - Device responds to MIDI data only on one particular channel, and is monophonic.
Multi Mode - Used by many devices for multitimbral operation. An expanded version of Mode 3, Multi Mode allows the device to respond to several independent MIDI channels at once, with each being polyphonic. (See also WFTD “Multitimbral“)
Mono Mode - Used for MIDI guitar applications, Mono Mode is an expanded version of Mode 4, allowing for six Omni Off/Monophonic channels to be used at once, one for each string of the controller. Hi Borge. Moog One allows the ability for each of the three Synths to either all follow the same MIDI Channel (Off, 1 to 16) or to choose the MIDI Channel for each of the three Synths.
There currently is no Omni more (all MIDI Channels are received) or Mono Mode for guitarists. But there is a list on the Moog Forum filled with ideas from future Moog One owners. If either of these is very important to you, feel free to share it on the Moog Forum's *Moog One* page.
Ok! What I need is one midi channel for each voice, Mono Mode - Used for MIDI guitar applications. Maybe a firmware opdate, like the Roland mks-70 have? Thanks!

13:26 I'm a bit confused here. Ring modulators are not supposed to stay in tune. If they stay in tune, they're not doing ring modulation! To stay in tune, the output frequencies would have to vary geometrically with (be a multiple of) the input frequencies - but ring modulator outputs are supposed to vary linearly...

I am sorry but to my ears, this defeats every analog poly on the market, in fact it maybe the most exciting Poly since the Alesis Andromeda. It’s on another level.
Instead of TELLING us the wonderful things this does. SHOW us HOW you are doing these marvelous things. I still have no idea how to apply things like filter changes or ratcheting within a step in a sequence; I know they do them, I can't figure out HOW, and the manual doesn't tell me. Seems the ONE does poly glissando, thats great, could you tell me how please?

The LFO at 1000Hz seems to disappear. I like to se a Demo using a SAW wave on the LFO at high rate modulating a tri waveform on a OSC at a high range to se how precise it is. I did try the LFO on the SUB-37 and it is not precise at all.
Is it me or just this demo. In my headphones it sounds like this synth is noisy.

Does anybody know the benefit of having 16 voices over 8? Is it just more notes in a chord? I just bought the 8 but I have the chance to switch it to the 16 voice for another $1,500. Wondering if that's worth it? I just traded my Sub Phatty, Juno 106 and Arp 2600m + cash for Moog One and this video is making me glad I did.

This thing is amazing, my only gripe is that this is definitely not safe for gigging. It would be cool if they could make a little less expensive 4 or 6 voice version of this, but besides that it's great.

I think in the eagerness to show off the onboard effects, the core character of the Moog One is a bit obfuscated. More dry run demos with just a light touch of onboard FX will really showcase this beauty.

Hi JubileeGiggles. Yes, the Moog One has Sine wave LFOs, but only Triangle, Saw, Ramp, Square and Pulse audio oscillators (plus every shape in between those). But you can use either (or both ) Low Pass Filters to change a Triangle wave into a Sine wave. Thanks for watching!

Hi Marco, FM did happen, but I probably should have turned up the depth as I went faster. Since the LFOs top out at 1kHz, your better bet would be to use the hard-wired FM section that modulates a full-frequency Moog One VCO with one of the other two VCOs (selectable with a dedicated button). This also gives you the ability to control the level and filter routing of the FM sound as it has its own dedicated Mixer VOLUME knob, and VSF and LADDER routing buttons.
