    Tim, you have really went over the top with the production of this video. The camera angles, close ups, grading, everything is top notch, like top pro work. The tone and theme of how you position the lighting is brilliant. I'm not really in the market for a Moog One but I enjoyed watching the video anyway, mostly because how you talk about things and express your thoughts about gear. I'm really impressed with how much effort you put into your videos. I know how much work all the setup and editing is. I'm also a TH-camr... just over 800k subs (this is my private account). I usually only make comments on TH-cam like once a month. Anyway, keep up the great work. All your videography and music you write is brilliant as well. You really set your self apart from everyone else in this sector. Take care - Mark

      Thanks a lot Mark, I really appreciate your feedback a lot. I know I'm not doing YT in a business-savvy way but keeping my videos to the optimum 15 minutes feels impossible, even 30 minutes feels very superficial given the subject matter. I decided a while back to throw everything I can at each video and do the best I can with each one. It kind of satisfies the frustrated filmmaker inside me! I just wish I could produce them more frequently than I do.

    Tim, I'm a filmmaker and I concur the production value of this video is extraordinary. But it means nothing if the content and the heartfelt desire to communicate, teach, and inspire was not right behind it. Your use of transitions are both subtle and very evocative of your desire to express meaning, a tool the best filmmakers struggle with quite often. I also will never own such a beast as the Moog One, but with your review I feel that, just for a moment or even a few minutes, I know what it might feel like to play. Keep up the extraordinary work and by all means, never lose your candor and honesty. Best --

    Tim, you did an excellent job with this overview of your experiences with the Moog One. I can see sound designers and film scoring artists buying this synth, given its vast capabilities. I believe in 20 years the Moog One will be coveted much in the same way as past "super synths" such as the Yamaha CS-80 and Roland Jupiter 8 are today.

      Why do you think that way? Wil there be a lot of well known musicians play them now and in the upcoming decade? There won´t be synths that will replace it in the next few years? Were only a small amount produced?

      It really hasn’t garnered the kind of excitement and reverence that would suggest this … Seems more of a tweaker’s synth, than a player’s synth …
      Moog’s past classics were all much simpler, with a more raw sound … It sounds nice, and big, but not particularly Moog-ish, to me - sounds such that it could be anything, really …

    You have a truthfulness and elegance in your videos that is simply unmatched on TH-cam. The hour passed quickly and all i could think towards the end is i don’t want it to end. This is the synth, the one that so many of us want but the price plays with our minds a bit. In the US we spend so much on motor vehicles, dropping 30k on a car loan is standard. Quality synth gear, that brings with it a full spectrum of emotional experience beyond even the sound, its the visceral nature like a fine piano or guitar.
    Guilt has no place there, we spend far more on things that matter not.

    Tim, I recently purchased a ONE. My initial experience has been very challenging. Listening to this video has helped me feel comfortable it's not just me. I've been struggling to consistently get an even sound across the keyboard. I've literally described it to Moog exactly as you have. From the middle of the keyboard up is usually fine. However, the low to mid registers are very often muddy, muffled and not crisp or clear. I was also very surprised with the factory presets and how poorly the ONE sounded when I initially booted. I've run the calibration and am still having the same results. I own a Matriarch and the sounds, out of the box, are sooo stirring! I would be so grateful for any input as I'd love to fall in love with my ONE! Thanks! Mitch

    Tim, this was a tremendous video in many ways! I have a Moog One also (purchased new in December of 2019) and share your adulation for the design and sound, along with some of your frustrations. The various firmware updates have brought welcome changes (my tuning was never an issue, so I am keeping that compensation disabled for now). I had not noticed the stereo spread programming quirks before now. I hope that it's a bug that will be squashed soon.
    Regarding cost/value of owning the Moog One: It's a luxury, yes. It's not needed, as you said. But it is an absolute joy to play and interact with. What gives me some peace of mind is Moog synthesizers, especially flagship models like this, tend to hold (or increase) their value over the years.
    All that said, I do hope that you find time and desire to produce additional videos exploring the Moog One. Your content is so well presented and informative that I can see many owners of this synth will find your efforts both educational and enriching. There just isn't much online devoted to really digging into the various mod matrix settings, in particular, along with more nuanced programming ideas like you've demonstrated in this video.
    One question: The patches you demonstrated were sublime. Do you have any plan or desire to offer sound sets for sale?
    Thanks again for the time you put into this video.

    Outstanding, well-produced and comprehensive review. I was amazed with how much your conclusion parallels my feelings about the One. I also purchased my 16 voice second hand from eBay for about the price of a new 8 voice with tax, about eight months ago. I struggled for a long time with trying to justify the cost, and I’ve almost sold it a few times. I have settled in with it now, realizing that there is no one poly that can do what this does. I have owned a few Alesis Andromedas, and each one has been problematic. The A6 is technically more powerful, but the OS is far less intuitive than the One’s, and while there are some who have reliable Andromedas, that has not been my experience. The Andromeda’s sound, in my opinion, was more sterile than the One. I have also owned an OB6 and a Prophet 6. While they sound fantastic, I was always disappointed with the lack of voices, LFOs and modulation options. The River was a serious consideration for me before I bought the One, but being in the U.S., I felt it too risky to buy something so high priced from Europe with no U.S. service option; the logistics of sending it back to France for a repair are nightmarish. The One has a semi-permanent place in my studio for now. It sounds incredible and it will take years to get close to utilizing all the potential this beast has. It’s a guilty pleasure that I am privileged to own.

      The is a reassuring comment for me because I don't have that kind of money. But how is the 008?! How do you deal with the alternating panning / voices? I was going to get one but I read about the quirky left right left right. What is the sound like? Brassy? More Like a Jupiter x r prophet or Oberheim?

    • @ksqmusic
      @ksqmusic 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MajorOSC The 008 has 15 filter types (plus a resonance "constant" so actually like 30 filters). So it can sound a little bit like everything- while having it's own unique sound.
      The hard panned voices never bothered me, that's an easy fix with panning. Plus 90% of the time I'm using it in "stack" mode- Where one voice is hard left and the other is hard right. It makes it a 4 voice synth but man on man does it sound fat and massive.

    Tim, that is actually an EXCELLENT video you put together, very useful as it explains extremely well why you would and wouldn't want a Moog One at the same time. I really sympathize here, the only difference is that, unlike you, I didn't manage to justify the price of it 😅 (and therefore I stopped everything right before placing an actual order).
    I couldn't stop watching, because you made your points so clearly I really wanted to see more. And I'm glad I did because I discovered a few additional things I didn't know about this synth, very cool! The sports car analogy is *exactly* how I feel about the Moog One. It is definitely a luxury product, yes you could get some separated synths/VST's and ultimately get something more functional and probably sonically superior to it without all the quirks, but that's not the same life you'd be living here. Come on, this is like jewelry, it has absolutely no utility whatsoever, it's just... nice.
    Speaking of nice, what a nice work you have done here! Lots of very useful information and attention to details. And I know how much of a pain it is to create such a lengthy thing, so that's even more kudos to your credit.
    The sound examples are also really nice, and as usual, the picture looks amazing, very stylish LUT and nicely lit overall. Congratulations, and most of all, thank you 🙏

    Well...this video, great video, it deserves pages and talking about many things...I think all the considerations, all questions we must answer to ourselves, price, usability if it worth every penny or if we really need it, are important.
    Just let me say about my thoughts...I started playing with synths when I was 12 years old, now with 53, I am thinking about some wrong things I did in the past, like selling my Oberheim OBX-A, Juno-60, MS-20...etc just because they had some inconvenient issues like tuning, no midi, no memory presets, weight...anyway.
    Now I am really sorry about those decisions because a real OBX-A maybe a heavy keyboard and with those tuning issues, it's not the best keyboard to go to the stage ...oh...MS-20, changing all parameters between songs could be a nightmare but, that sound....now, I am watching this video, and I completely in love with this Moog One.
    I have a Moog Little Phatty what I love it (plus a DX7 II, Emulator III xp, Wavestation etc) and I would like to recover some of those old synths...in some way, because even working with some of the best VST synths nowadays like Diva, Zebra, Omnisphere, etc the way to achieve good sounds can't be compared with the old fashion way for people like me. I think this truly a "sports car", it's a true inspiration..

    Tim, thank you very much for this video. Your presentation and delivery are excellent. You produced this in a way that made one hour go by in no time flat; your material and presentation of it were that good.
    I did have one thought on your critique of the stereo implementation of the synth and that is this: Moog likely understands quite well that this instrument is going to be used mostly in recording studios due to its price. That means that it will be plugged into a mixing desk or directly into an audio interface and recorded with a DAW. This environment will likely already have a whole lot of effects plugins including a sophisticated stereo spread effect. I have an excellent stereo LFO that I use to modulate things like hi-hats and synth voices as it is (it was free too). I think they simply made an assumption they didn't need to go too far into that. Perhapts not a great assumption but, an assumption nonetheless.
    If you need to implement a more complex, random-sounding ping-poinging, stereo effect, can't you use an LFO with a random waveform modulating the stereo spread effect?

    • @TimShoebridge
      @TimShoebridge  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks a lot Jeff. Yes you're probably right with that assumption, but it is a shame nonetheless. If Moog had considered the effects section more carefully then they might have added the effects as modulation destinations, which they did not.
      Yes you can definitely modulate the VCA and I do that in a few of the patches 👍

    Oh yeah, I was going to say, yes. I completely agree. Moog should definitely release an 8-note polyphonic model with two oscillators per voice, 5-octave keyboard, something in between the Matriarch and the One. It could be called the Patriarch and cost around $4,000. That would be a competition aimed straight at the Prophet-5/10 and OB-X8.

    You are a great reference for getting useful insights into synths! Maybe that's because you are not just spot on and knowledgeable, always naming stumbling blocks besides great sides, but you are also human and musical in a way which I find very helpful and sympathetic. Thanks for this video! I belong to those who don't buy that one (happy with my Prophet 6 and other keyboards, besides lots of VSTis), but finally understand, why and how this synth can be an asset for others.

    I think there's more going on with the reported "thinness" of the Moog One. Possibly a lack of pitch and filter variance, or an overly tight sound when you first unbox it. That can be solved with modulation presets, somewhat like the Sequential solutions with the Prophet 5/10's "Vintage" knob. But that Pan Spread quirk is legitimately confusing. Thanks for pointing that out Tim.

    thought about getting One (joke, get it?). I actually toured with a Memorymoog in the 8o's, and it was just one problem after another, endless trips to the repair shop (which I couldn't afford), playing live I would often have to disable voices until I was down to a 2 voice. Makes me laugh to see them sell for 20K now, I don't care how massive they are. So I know it's 35 years later and a very different synth, but I'm suspicious of the One in the same way, it feels unfinished and overpriced. I've read many reviews that worry me, some real owner unhappiness out there. The new Prophet 10 for me I think. Great review, thanks

    Thank you Tim for video like this, you did such amazing job. I would really like all reviews and thoughts be like this... honest, indepth and as long as nessesary and I dont mind watching for more than hour (actual 15-20min reviews that arent indepth enough are pretty useless for me). For me Moog One is simply out of budget, but you learned me to enjoy this instrument and while I was watching, I can say that Moog One is actually very very similar to my Oberheim Matrix in all the posibilites and various options / routings (of course One is more overwhelming, but many similarities are there). All the best!

    Exceptional review Tim, loved hearing your thoughts on this synth. I have a lot of love for the Moog One, but its definitely been a struggle. Mine is the 7th one made, wich is awesome, but it has big time tuning issues. Unison, wich I love to use is almost useless. That was broken in an early firmware update, hope its fixed now.. I've litteraly stepped away from it for a few months due to frustration. But I'll load up the latest firmware here soon and give it another go. You've made some wonderful sounds for sure! Congrats 👏

    Interesting thoughts on the panning causing some weird lackluster quality to some patches, I had a very similar experience as you when trying out the Moog One. I saw one at a Guitar Center and was like "OMG I'm about to play this thing until my eyes fall out," but about 15 minutes later I was ready to move on, and ended up losing track of time playing a Matriarch instead. I was using headphones, and figured maybe it was just too complex to really shine in a quick jam without a manual or anything, but I feel a little more justified in my initial impression now.

    It's more like a Tesla than a sports car, sports cars are a bit rubbish and become boring whereas Tesla's just keep on getting better with age! Thanks so much for the vid, I've had my ONE for just over six months and you've brought to light some features I had yet to discover. I think that's the thing about the ONE, it's an endless journey, you can sit happily for hours creating a patch and then sit happily for hours playing the creation, one thing you didn't touch on was the patch creation framework, which is, as far as I can make out infinite, it can also create timestamps within patches, which is great for performance. I think we're all just scratching the surface and will be for some time. Something I am experimenting with also - you may be able to shed some light on is building an effective keystroke drum machine into one synth, I can build a great drum machine over three synths but then have nothing left to play over it... Thanks again for sharing!

    Just another comment to add to my others! Really happy you covered the pan spread functionality.... coming from being a user of Oberheims I'm used to this and it is my main problem with modern synths... hard to go back to regular synths without it. So I was blown away to see it on DSI synths. I recall messaging Amos back when he was doing the first live Moog One demos and he mentioned it would be simple to implement (I seem to recall pan was modulatable.. but I wanted a fixed position mode) so I'm disappointed to see the limitations.
    The more I am watching the more I'm less inclined to buy this Moog as it just sounds quite static and boring like a mid 80s poly and also the patches are covered in effects (of course its about rolling your own in the end). Add to the fact it has a computer, fan, what seem like bugs it seems like a bit of a mess... so I am kinda glad I didn't pull the trigger... probably a synth that will eventually sound great and be a classic. But the DSI stuff just sounds so good without any problems.

    Just to add some synth minutia, the Buchla 200e system offers the Model 256e Quad Control Voltage Processor that lets you design (and store) very basic CV transformations. The trade-off is it looks like the Moog offers many powerful preset transforms, whereas the 256e offers user-definable (but very simple “2-segment and linear”) transforms.

    I loved this video Tim, well put together, this is indeed a monstrous bit of kit. Factory presets were made to disappoint and inspire users to create their own sounds, the sound of it however is pretty cool, but give me one of these and I'll score an independent sci-fi the day after lol, it's gorgeous from a form factor standpoint, i don't mind the size at all. Overall great video, lovely device, not perfect, but lovely anyways. To me the UDO Super 6 is definitely stereo standard for analog synths. Cheers !

    Excellent video, a must watch for anyone considering purchasing a One. I've been toying with the idea, but have to admit the pitch tuning issue would bother me very much. There's no way I'd use the tuning algorithm or deal with the hassle of having to ship the synth back to Moog. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

    Great video, spot on. Re Pan Spread, it was indeed an afterthought and came only with v1.0.3 if I remember well, probably after we all complained about it. I still think that it's missing a unison stereo spread parameter, which unlike pan spread should spread voices equally in unison mode. I end up doubling and panning the synths way too often, that would save a lot of time, and a synth slot. Unison is fairly buggy btw, with stuck notes and weird voice allocation mishaps. Brings me to my last big annoyance, voice allocation. As it is, the algorithm is naive at best and eats through voices like there is no tomorrow. There should be at least a parameter to tell the voice allocator to reuse voices for the same note, for anything that does not require overlapping releases of the same notes, say percussive patches with fast arpeggios. That would enable us to use the voices doubling for more stereo effect without running out of voices too fast. That said, my M1 is not going anywhere for the next 10 years, if ever, I would miss it too much.

    Compared to a $360,000 Yamaha CFX grand, this Moog synthesizer is actually very reasonably priced. I am personally not a Moog fan, and no I don't need or want the Moog One. I find the offerings from Roland, such as Jupiter-X and Juno-X far more desirable in terms of the sound, features, feel of the keybed, and overall aesthetics. But I am glad that Moog makes synthesizers, and it's even nicer to see people being passionate about them. The more companies there are in business, the better for the consumer. And it should always be about the consumer.

    Thanks Tim. Very nice run-through! I'm still mulling this one over mostly because of the cost and the real estate it would take up in the music room. The fact I could get another OB6 module and 2 Arturia Polybrutes for less money definitely gives me pause to mull it over some more. Your video has slightly budged me towards a "yeah" vote (conditionally if they can find a better fix for the tuning problems), but I'm still not there yet.
    Was laughing at your attempt to diagram the filter routing, because I went through the same thing with my Alesis Andromeda video. I even had the graphics totally DONE (or so I thought), when I realized I didn't understand it correctly. Back to the drawing board I went, and I was still only half happy with the finished results.
    Again, great job!

    When you use a Synth effect that operates like an insert as opposed to a send - so with your example Flanger as opposed to Delay, the effect is acting on all voices, and the clean signal mixed in with effected signal is post conversion to avoid phase issues. At this point your voices are combined and there is no way for the VCA to individually pan them. Not a bug and no way around that using the pre-VCA synth effects. You would need 16 separate bit crushers for instance to keep them separate and able to be panned. The master effects are different due to their placement in the signal chain. The reason the P6 and OB6 behave the way they do is that all of the effects are master effects, and post-voice spreading. Of course Moog could have designed it so that the 3 individual Synth effects were each post voice-spread., but for whatever reason, they did not.

    • @nectariosm
      @nectariosm 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      But a flanger is a delay with very short delay times, it should work all the same.

    • @GuyaGuy
      @GuyaGuy 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@nectariosm Yeah, it seems like they decided to flatten the signal on the flanger and phaser for either mono or, on some types, stereo. With the bitcrusher you can maintain the spread by rolling off the wet mix to 50%. The spread will be left/right and the effect center. I believe the default for bit crush is 100% which is why he complains about it in the video.

    • @philaiken6003
      @philaiken6003 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@nectariosm But it doesn't. The dry signal it uses to combine with the delayed signal is the converted dry signal - as evident by the loss of panning, And indeed it would not sound as expected otherwise as there is already a certain amount of delay induced by the conversation, so the difference between the unconverted signal and the delay would be greater than the converted signal and the delay. This doesn't matter when the delay is long enough, but it is likely enough to screw with the flange. Also is the fact that the delayed signal will not be able to follow an individual voice when panned. So you have the original dry panned around the spectrum, and the slightly delayed signal used to create the flange effect all panned to one place. Again - workable with a traditional delay where the note and delay are noticeably separate, but not so much when you are trying to create a flange effect where each note should be combined as one with the delayed signal.

    • @nectariosm
      @nectariosm 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@philaiken6003 I mentioned that a flanger is a delay with short times and that the panning should work the same as the delay, which Tim mentions that the stereo image in the delay effect, is there. But as GuyaGuy mentioned, the flanger is probably a different effect on its own and from the sounds of it, an insert which makes the Moog One suffer from the lack of stereo image. What an odd implementation of effects...
