1967 NFL Championship Ice Bowl highlights

  • Context: Lenny Baldini uploaded a highlights video "1967 Cowboys at Packers A Chilling Championship" of this game, and I noticed that the NFL Networks broadcast had deleted certain parts and added others (in some cases making odd choices that removed important game action) from the "Great Teams Great Years Great Games" broadcast that I had.
This is an attempt to edit in the deleted sections into Lenny's rip, they're taken from an old VCR recording I had and will be recognizable by the lower audio and video quality.

I attended this game with my dad and two brothers- reluctantly, no less . If I remember correctly , my cousins were stopping by and I didn’t want to miss them , nor was I a die-hard Packer fan ( I am now ) . We sat high up around the 30 yard line near the end zone history would soon be made . I just wanted the game to end so I could go home . My Pops kept telling me ‘ You’ll be glad you witnessed this ‘ . Now , nearly 60 years later I can appreciate my Dad’s insistence I pay attention . I’ve lived in Colorado since the early ‘70’s , have 3 sons and ALL are major Packer fans . Still have the ticket stub to that game - $8.00 .

I wonder how much Bob Hayes thought he was helping his team with his hands in his pockets all day?! Where was he planning on catching the ball? Through his Earhole? There were some players (Mostly Packers) with their hands uncovered on the bench!! The Packers were simply tougher than the Cowboys. Their mighty Martinet of a leader wouldn't tolerate anything less. Vince Lombardi is the greatest coach ever to blow a whistle. And he infused that burning desire into the Packers by osmosis. The way that Green Bay won assured their immortality as a team. Over sixty yards in four minutes against Mother Nature at her bitchiest. A team that dud everything they had to do. Just when it mattered most.

@rustyrelicsfarm2406 People don't remember what those early 60's Packer teams did! Yes, those Packers might be the greatest dynasty ever. You could go with the 50's or 60's Celtics, but basketball was in it's infancy back then. Plus, there weren't many teams. The Yankees were great in MLB, but in different eras. In the NFL, the 49ers or Cowboys and even The Patriots didn't hold a candle to Green Bay from '61 to '69.

I watched this game on tv that day. My dad was with me. Dad only had interest in boxing, no other sport. But when Bart Starr scored that winning td, Dad was happy. He was no football fan, but he was a John F Kennedy fan. "I hate Dallas, bad memories."

The GREATEST DRIVE in NFL History, to win the GREATEST GAME Of NFL History. As the Offense was going on the field for that epic drive, Hall Of Fame Linebacker Ray Nitschke Screamed hoarsely, "DON'T LET ME DOWN! DON'T LET ME DOWN!" A powerful moment. The huddle was even more powerful, as it was a place where everyone in the knew the deal. They knew they had to get it done. And did. Lombardi had pushed, prodded and screamed at them, all for that moment. They were basically perfect that drive. How they got it done is beyond comprehension, especially since the offense did absolutely NOTHING in the second half.

With all due respect to the 1958 NFL Title game between Colts and Giants that went to OT, The Ice Bowl is THE Greatest NFL Game of all time because of the conditions, and the drive to win it. In fact, by going for the TD to WIN the game, instead of settling for the safe FG to send it to OT, the drive and play is legendary. It was an all or nothing call to sneak it in. With no time outs left, they had to score or lose. That decision to AVOID OT by Lombardi and Starr is what makes this game so legendary. They could have played it safe and kicked the FG to tie it.

Then how do you explain 66, great weather and at the Cotton Bowl? Cowboys failed there also with the game on the line. That's why Green Bay were Champions (3 in a row, 5 in 7 years), and Cowboys were always the hyped "Next Years Champions".

Lol, my favorite line in this is the Bob Hayes line. Pointing out that on running plays that Bob Hayes kept his hands in his pants (which tipped GB off whether play was run or pass), Woodson says "the weather turned Hayes into the World's Coldest Human". Hayes was the Gold Medal winner in the 100m dash in the 64 Olympics, commonly known as the "World's Fastest Human"

In fact, he was a very good narrator and voice actor in cartoon programming and commercials all the way well into his 90s (he died shortly before his 100th birthday). In addition to his narrations of both the 1967 NFL Championship Game and Super Bowl II films (John Facenda was unavailable, so Woodson was inserted as his replacement by NFL Films), he's best known to most for his narration of the Super Friends, which he did from 1977 all the way to when the series ended in 1985. Woodson also voiced other animation characters in the 70s and 80s, including characters such as J. Jonah Jameson, the Sub-Mariner, and Dr. Strange on the 1981 Spider-Man series and/or Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends.

Remember, the NFL was considering postponing the game in 1967 but noted that the weather conditions were not changing in the next few days, and in a nod to business considerations, because they didn't want to compete for TV time with the college bowl games which would have started that night with, likely, the Sugar Bowl and continued the next day with the other three main bowl games because it was New Year's day. And you face palm here by not noting that the only reason the modifications you point out are in place were put there BECAUSE of the Ice Bowl.
