1983 Philadelphia Eagles

  • The 1983 Philadelphia Eagles were something of a transition team, simultaneously old and young. This was the last year many of the veterans from the 1980 Super Bowl team would be with the team, but at the same time good young players like WR Mike Quick and S Wes Hopkins were starting for the first time. Quick had an outstanding year with over 1,400 receiving yards, but in many games was the only real offensive weapon for the Eagles, as WR Harold Carmichael was near the end of his career, RB Wilbert Montgomery played in only 5 games, and starting TE John Spagnola missed the season entirely.

    The first Eagles highlight film in many years not narrated by John Facenda, who passed away in September 1984

      u said it best outtaherephila, the 1983 Eagles highlight film "Earning Their Wings" was narrated by Mel Alpern. It was one of the 1983 team highlight films not narrated by John Facenda who was battling lengthy illness that ultimately led to John Facenda's passing on September 26, 1984.

    how ironic after the 1983 Philadelphia Eagles season concluded, Stan Walters retired to join the Eagles Radio Network as a analyst to Merrill Reese's play-by-play and stayed there for the next 14 years (1984 thru 1997 seasons). After Walters left the Eagles Broadcast Booth, Mike "Quick Six" Quick joined in as Merrill Reese's sidekick in 1998 and remained the analyst ever since.

      @TomG1555  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mike Quick is one of my all-time favorite players, but unfortunately injuries limited him to only 5 Pro Bowls and 2 All-Pro years, and that just doesn't compare well to other WRs in the HoF. Harold C. had the longevity, but still had only 4 Pro Bowl appearances; he also played a lot of those years prior to the heavy passing offenses of the '80s and later, so his stats don't look nearly as good compared to more recent WRs. HoF is just not gonna happen for either of them, regrettably.

    • @bryanthomsen5551
      @bryanthomsen5551 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Quick.....What a fitting name for a wide receiver. And quick he was. The Hall Of Fame is more concerned with statistics and longevity which makes it unlikely that either of them will ever be enshrined.

      @@bryanthomsen5551 If Quick would have had a Super Bowl or two in his time, that accolade might have helped him receive more favorable consideration. Something akin to what Terrell Davis received by winning a couple of Super Bowls, ROY, NFL MVP, AFC POY and Super Bowl MVP. That hardware often makes a big difference to the voters.

      @@TomG1555 + Do you think Cliff Branch should be there, or Drew Pearson? As a kid I remember hearing their name called as much as Lynn Swann's name was called. Maybe I am wrong.

    • @TomG1555
      @TomG1555  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PerpetualArt Branch: 4 Pro Bowls, 3 All-Pro years. Pearson: 3 Pro Bowls, 3 All-Pro years. For their time, those are very good qualifications. Unfortunately for them, not many WR from that era made the HOF; the two that I see are Largent (7 PB, 3 AP) and Biletnikoff (4 PB, 1 AP), both of whom had exceptionally long careers (each 14 years). I remain of the opinion that Stallworth (3 PB/1 AP) was a better WR than Swann (3 PB/1 AP) in terms of both overall production and longer time in the NFL, but Swann had the flashier career especially in terms of Super Bowl performances, and as Luke E. mentions above, that does make a difference in HOF voting patterns. Swann also being a well-known broadcaster after retiring could only have helped him with the HOF voters, as well, in terms of keeping his profile high.

    Marion Campbell failed as a head coach.

    • @TomG1555
      @TomG1555  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      How so? Much as I loved Vermeil, the team he left Campbell to take over was aging and starting to break down in a lot of different areas, especially on offense. There was going to be a doldrums period, whoever the coach was. Also, a lot of Buddy's later success was built around cornerstones that MC had brought on board, like Randall and Reggie and Quick. Swamp Fox was an excellent defensive coordinator and an average head coach, which isn't that different from Buddy's legacy, he just wasn't as flashy with the media as Ryan was.

    • @bryanthomsen5551
      @bryanthomsen5551 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Whether it was in Philadelphia or the two tenures in Atlanta, he never coached a winning team. In that regard, he was a failure as a head coach. When he took over the Eagles, the Eagles had fallen from grace in such a short period of time. He had a tough morale building job after the departure of Dick Vermeil. Campbell, a defensive-minded coach, wasn't much help in rebuilding the Eagles offense, once the domain of Vermeil who, like its former coach during 1982, played at times like it was "burned out."

      Thomas Bugg. But kuharic was bad. Lol. I'm glad I didn't grow up around that time. Lol. I was born in 1975 a year before Dick Vermeil got here. I have to say for the most part of my life the Eagles have had winning teams on the field. As much as I like Doug Peterson and I know he want us our first Super Bowl title. Andy Reid and Dick Vermeil are still the 2 best coaches in Eagles history. But I do think Doug Peterson can pass them he hasn't been here long enough yet

    Marion Campbell inherited a team in 1983 that had a roster of older players who had been on those Eagle teams that made the playoffs from 1978-81 under Dick Vermeil and by 1982 the age of many of those players started to catch up to the team. At that time, there were only 45 players on an NFL roster unlike the 53 player roster including 6 practice squad players there is today and the fact back then that teams did not turn their roster over entirely from year to year since NFL free agency didn't begin until 1991.

      5:28 A lot of times marginal players make the best coaches, because they're typically not blessed with superhuman athletic ability and *have* to learn the game inside and out in order to have a chance. Bottom-of-the-roster guys also have to do a lot of inglorious unnoticed stuff like special teams blocking and tackling, usually at minimum pay, so without a love of the game its hard to make a career of it; when those players retire, coaching is an attractive way to stay in the game.

      @@TomG1555 Bill Cowher wasn't totally a marginal type NFL player in terms of his athletic abilities. Overachiever, sure. But I wouldn't say he was a complete and total bust in his playing career, compared to later unspectacular NFL players who went on to be HC's like Jason Garrett.

    They were STILL pillagers on defense and the team was loaded with too much talent to end up with a crummy 5-11 record.
    They beat Washington, Rams, Giants and 49ers, and were in every game except the 2nd Giants game and the big, season-ending loss to the St. Louis Cardinals, so it could have been different. Seven straight losses was pretty horrible and frustrating, though.
