thank you ! As a french I always get crazy when I see teacher telling the french R comes from the throat. It's a "voiced uvular sound".

Thank you. As a person with an American accent, it was super hard to pronounce the R in the beginning. It was something completely alien to me as I only had experience with two Indian languages and English.

I use mainly Czech (Spanish/Italian) r and it is quite different from the standard French one as well. The English r was easy compared to French one, though sometimes I get close these days.
Using the Spanish r is fine; many parts of France use that r so you are in good company. I teach the standard French R but there are certainly other varieties.

Dear Ms. Metz, I defer to your expertise in how French sounds are produced, but all I can say when I started trying to produce German Rs, the first foreign language I learned (and their Rs are very much like French Rs, produced between the back of the mouth and the throat) the easiest way to teach myself to produce it was to think of gargling and it got me there very quickly. It also helps a lot to produce the ch sound of German and Dutch and words like loch in Scottish English, the only difference being expressing the air out without vibrating the throat.

As a french guy, someone who speaks french with the english "r" is so cute!
But I can easily understand that this is not satisfying for someone who wants to speak french and not just trying to be understood by a french native speaker.
Yes, saying the French r correctly is one of the most important things to master for us who are non-French speakers. But I am happy to hear that you consider it "cute"! My goal as a phonetics teacher is to take people to their next level of spoken French so they sound as close as possible to a real French person. Thanks for your comment.

It would be interesting to compare the French 'r' with the two Basque 'r' sounds.

French r is a little bit trilled of Spanish and h like rh in English but try to pronounce it by your throat as if gargling with air.

The English r is not unique though
There are two Dravidian languages that have the ഴ (in Malayalam) & ழ (in Tamil). Tip of tongue even more rolled back than the English r though

If you speak a little Spanish, this sound is a bit like the "jota" in Spanish, in words like "Jose" La "Jolla." Or play around with the English "h" as in "ha". The air you feel with the "h" is close to where the tongue hits for the French "r. Best wishes!

everytime I try to raise the back of my tongue, I end up making a uvular trill (i.e., vibrating the uvula). I've raised it just too much, then?
Hi, Thanks for your comment. It is hard for me to know exactly what you are doing without hearing you, but it sounds like you are hitting the uvula with too much energy. The French r I am teaching could be compared a bit to the Spanish "one tap" /r/ as in "senor" as opposed to the trilled /r/ as in "perro". The second r here has more energy, more force than the first. The French /r/ is the softest of the French consonants, the weakest, so when you say "Paris" it is a soft, almost gentle sound. Bonjour, I am french and I can tell you that you have several way to pronounce the R, it can be soft like Paris or more gutural after a d or a p : adresse, prendre or even very discret nearly not pronoucable like at the end of a name : amour, toujours, terre... Good luck les amis...
Bonjour Patrick, Thanks for your comment. Of course there are many subtleties as you point out. Since many of those who watch my videos are not very advanced in their French pronunciation, I try to correct, in this case, the over-pronunciation of the R which many students hit way too hard, making it sound harsher than it is. Again, thanks for adding to the story.

Hebrew r is almost identical to French.

Mandarin Chinese has the same R sound as English, I swear ?
Other languages I am not familiar with could have this sound, but for sure it is not found in French!

This lady does not know whether the French R exists in other languages.
First of all there are more than 1 French R, in "une rose pour Frédéric" you can find 3 Rs.
Secondly there are guttural Rs in Portuguese, German, Dutch, Danish, etc
This lady does not know whether the American R exists in other languages.
American R exists in portuguese in some areas of Brazil (São Paulo) and some Dutch speakers (Gooie R) will use it also in Dutch
