Bonjour! I'm Geri Metz and this is my latest series of mini video lessons "Hard Words in French"
In this series I'll be taking up those particularly hard to pronounce words as chosen by expats living in France.
    Hard Words #14
This is a word you see in airports and train stations, welcoming visitors, so it's a good idea to know how to say it. It does feature a French vowel that we don't have in English and that many find challenging to say. I give a hint about how French speakers form this sound which is also the sound you have in “soeur” or “oeuf”.

Your descriptions of how to shape your mouth are very useful. At school we are only told to listen and repeat, it doesn't help us to identify where we are going wrong. Thank you Geri!

How do you in enroll for your French course. Because I am taking French 2 in high school as an elective. And I find your videos helped me pass my projects in French 1 last year.

Bonjour Ty, Thanks for your comments. I am so glad you found my videos useful. I can't really know what your French 2 course will be like--that all depends on your school and teacher and the method she or he uses. For more information on the course itself, you can go to my website pronouncingfrench.com under "courses". I do recommend that you continue to watch the videos and try to put into practice what I teach there. If I can be of help to you, don't hesitate to contact me again. Best wishes for your coming academic year.

I get constantly confused by French vowels. Many sound the same to me but are spelled differently (e.g., étudiante v. j’ai. Is the “é” the same as the “ai”?) Is there a chart somewheres that lists ALL the French vowels with ALL the possible spellings? As one familiar with phonetics, do you know exactly how many vowel sounds there are in French? Madam Geraldine, vous êtes magnéfique! (Sp?)

Does the r at the beginning take the same effort as carrotte. Par exemple "raison"

Making the r is the same effort--but I always stress that the French r is actually the softest and weakest of the French consonants. As I teach in my course, Mastering French Pronunciation, The French always reach for the vowel, so the "ai" of raison is already forming before the r is added to it. Hope this is helpful. If not, let me know.
