Cheers for watching this week's video! Tim has promised to do all the washing up for a week to pay respects to the champion, Sam 🏆🎄🎅 Merry Christmas and thank you so much for your support 👍 Keep chugging! 😁
Yo - Bangingly informative vlog 🏅🏅 I'll be flowing your journey as I'm considering cruising the cut in the near future. Well once I get back from a winter season off the Isla Margarita in the Caribbean. Q. Do you intend to create a patrons page?
Really appreciate your "financial honesty" guys - some really useful detail. The most important thing though is that you will be able to manage as continuous cruisers - great news!
One thing I can guarantee is that the youtube money will only go up from here on out. You guys are lovely, safe where youtube and the "ad-friendliness" is concerned and you are fun to watch. You certainly gained my subscription. Where your average cost is concerned, David from Cruising the Cut has done a similar video a year or 2 back and he came out at 6 or 6 and a half grand a year, so about 500-ish pounds a month on average with a couple of months mooring over both the summer holidays and winter. So, with 2 datapoints very similar to each other, I'd say you're right on the spot with your costs! What blew me away is food and internet. I pay 7 or so times as much for my flatrate internet here in Switzerland, both landline and mobile combined. Also, with about a hundred quid I'd be able to eat for about 1 and a half weeks, maybe 2 if I stretch things. I mention that because of my plan to migrate over the channel and onto the canals during the latter half of the twenties and videos like this give me strong data points to know where my independent income needs to be to be able to do that. On top of the boat buying of course. So, as this is the video that brought me to your channel, I am happy to be here and I am also looking forward to all the mischief and fun you guys will be up to!
Lovely comment, thanks Christian. Like the sound of your plan. CH is such an amazing country. Does it have any canals by the way? I understand what you're saying with cost of living. Not many people can say the UK is cheaper for them haha!
@@chuggingalong Yeah, we're just about as pricey as you get. As to canals, there seem to be a handful, but they are not interconnected and there is no canalboat culture here. Which is a bummer, but if there were the prices would be - Swiss.
I really appreciate your frankness and the level of detail you included. I think this is my favorite 'canal living costs' breakdown so far because it's the closest to my own perspective. Thank you.
Great couple genuinely feel how well you get along together and very informative for someone who's looking at taking the plunge living the same wonderful lifestyle. Carry on chugging guys!
Wow only £95 per month for food for the two of you . I’ve been doing something wrong for years my supermarket bill much higher. Thanks for sharing your experiences with such enthusiasm. Love your cheerful positive attitude to life.
Good video, thanks for being so open and honest with the numbers. You’ll need to factor in a regular engine service, your batteries won’t last forever and as you’ve identified there are many parts that can and do break down when it is most inconvenient.
Yes that's true about the batteries and engine service. We got new batteries when we bought her, so they should be good for at least another year or two. Thanks for your comment Darren 🙂👍🎄
Definitely organise a sinking fund for the batteries. They won't last forever, and they will need replacing at some point. You can extend the life of the batteries if you look after them, but sometimes that's easier to say than do. I'm not an expert on batteries, but basically, they only have so many cycles in them (charging and discharging). This can be extended if you don't deep discharge them often and generally keep them reasonably topped up. This depends on the type of batteries you have, so read up on the best way to treat the type of batteries YOU have. It will pay off.
Wow. What a breath of fresh air you both are. Thank you. You have given me a brand new channel to watch, before I fit out our widebeam boat next year. 👍😊
Love you guys, just came across your channel. I part-time car camp and that's my thing, but looking at where I could live next other than in a standard flat or house. Whilst a boat isn't for me, I love that you have found something that works for you and allows you some financial freedoms. Stay safe and blessed. 🙏🏾 solo female part-time car camper. 🇬🇧
Congratulations Sam! One thing that’s hard on shower drains is hair, we get these little round things with mesh in the center to collect hair to stop it going down the drain. You only have to clean one of those clogged drains to find some way to stop it clogging🤢🤮. Gross greasy and stinky. Hoping you get lots of work in the coming year. Thanks for this video, I’m sure it will help some other person who’s hoping to get a boat . Seasons Greetings🎄🙋🏼
I have just bought a narrowboat after selling my house I have never done this before and after watching your video I have gathered some quite useful information guys. Appreciate that. Even considering setting up a video blog of my own with my girlfriend. Hope you are both living the life on you're boat. Much love from Manchester ❤
@@chuggingalong reply love that you replied. Currently living in our boat Duke in Manchester.. has taken some adjusting and getting used too but getting there. But won't lie I've fallen in love with it, every time I walk up to him after being out it's like the first. Hope you guys are well. 👍
I follow a couple of boat-tubers avidly and you are now added into that small group, i live up north my advice to you is winter down south its a few degrees warmer, i hope you get to venture to the northern parts of the canal network in the future. I wish you both a merry xmas and remember "keep chugging"
Hi. Firstly, I love your videos and thanks! About five years ago I wanted to move and live on a narrowboat. However, I didn't know how I would make a wage. I have taught English in Thailand for 14 years and seeing that you teach online, and on the boat too has made me seriously think about making the change. Thanks! Merry Xmas!
Found your channel today. Wasn't expected much, but got much more than I expected. Throughly enjoyed your video, you both have great chemistry together. Needless to say I've now subscribed and looking forward to watching your new ones, while I'm waiting I will start at the beginning. Just an observation for you. You both speak so clearly and were easy to listen too. Have you ever thought about giving English lessons to foreign students? You would be easily understood so I believe maybe that could be where your niche lies. (I'm probably going to find you already do this once I start viewing your other vlogs). I didn't realise how much income you can make from you tube. In future I will let the ads play in full even though they annoy the hell out of me. Warmest wishes to you both.
Just found your channel and subscribed. I follow quite a few narrowboat channels and I really like your no nonsense, honest style. My last video was about my running costs. I'm always surprised how few vlogs there are on the subject. Your video will be very informative for those looking and thinking about Boating. Thanks guys and take care. Alan x
Hope you know that your low-costs are really impressive, especially on food. We've been spending more on our boat lately, e.g., on power tools to pull up a floorboard, and this has made me think that we should look more closely at our expenditure. Thanks for your openness :)
Hi Tim and Sam, a very interesting video thanks. I saw a quick shot at the beginning of a mooring pin with the welded ring at the top. Can I pass on a tip I was given when I started out? Those welded rings do give way in time so place the pin with the ring facing away from the boat, that way the shaft of the pin is taking the strain and not the weld. Still put the rope through the ring as it makes it easier to handle and if the pin gets pulled out of the bank when idiots go past without slowing down it will stay on the rope. I have encountered two boats drifting across the canal in the last month and in both cases I was able to pull the boat back and reset the pin - which was very clean after its wash!
You two are great! I might suggest a couple of things, with your permission? 1 - the first 6 months in a new home does not really reflect actual costs. Whether it is a house, a boat or a van, several purchases are made that might not be made again for around 5-10 years. Rugs, curtains, toilets, initial pantry stocks (which, after initial purchase are bought individually based on usage) so you may see a decrease of 10-15% for the next year. 2 - people often think that they cannot afford to save when the opposite is true. When money is tight, you can't afford not to save. Easy for me to say, right? Saving £10.00 every week or every other week, or saving £20.00 per month will put £250.00 aside for unplanned issues. Putting the money aside immediately after you are paid so that it is not something you ever count on means you won't miss it. I think you could do that, based on the numbers you reviewed. Same for known expenses, like blacking. That has to be done every 2-3 years if you don't want to fork out more for damage to the hull from not blacking soon enough. Decide if you will do it, or have it done and calculate the cost plus 30%. Divide the total by 30 months and run your numbers to see if you can afford to set that aside right away. The extra 30% is a cushion to allow for supply costs increase, delays getting it done as quickly as you thought because it is the first time you did this so you have to pay an extra day or two in shed rental or whatever. If it costs less, you can roll the funds over to the next blacking and decrease your monthly contribution by your surplus. You could have projects that you wanted to do and the extra could help pay for that. Whatever. 3 - The funds you are seeing now as TH-cam revenue will increase by 100%+ based on your current activity. Having any revenue after only4 months is pretty impressive. I never thought your videos were bad but they are improving. You will see more followers based on your current performance, which will result in an increase in ad revenue. Unless you get bored with the video production and stop uploading routinely or you change your subject matter to Tupperware sales or cult recruitment your numbers will grow. I think that they will grow more than the number I threw out but it would be a gamble to presume more. Counting your chickens and all that. I am surprised that the voting was so polarized. I couldn't decide who should win. I did not know what bread sauce is so the Reddy Bready was lost on me. And you tossed in so much srircha sauce that I thought it was a fail. But you both liked it. You earned more points for originality, in my book. I knew everything that Sam cooked but that cost her points in my book because it was the standard meat, potatoes and a veg. Meat and potatoes has stayed popular for a reason, it is just not on my list of favorites. Ah well. Another good video! Thanks!
Hi Rebecca, thanks for taking the time to write a very well put together comment. Great tips with the saving and you're right about the first months because we have been buying new things for the boat with the leftover money from work. Thanks for your kind words on the channel. We enjoy it and are happy to share our life on the water. Hitting 10k subscribers would be great for us 🙂🎄
I thought you covered the subject very well, providing numbers around some of the narrowboat-specific 'must-haves'. Very useful as I'm costing out my own water-borne 'Plan B'
Really enjoy your simply honest style of videos ..... IMO you are very lucky to have each other and also to have a home on a boat. I feel there are so many benefits of living on the narrow boat such as privacy away from neighbours, close to nature , clean air and freedom to move around the country. GOOD LUCK FOR THE FUTURE .
Very informative. Its a great adventure you're on. Life can be stressful if you're getting up to go to work day in day out. To have the freedom to go where you want is the goal of most people but never attainted. The problem is if you both decide to have children. Unless you home school them of course. I'd imagine that in itself would be a money earner for people who live on the canals like yourself. I'd also imagine small communities of 'boat dwellers' rely on home schooling. Good luck with your TH-cam channel and I hope it starts to reap proper dividends. You both have engaging personalities which can only be a positive.
I love it, many people follow and/or develop philosophies of alternative lifestyles, but Rosie and Jim's way of life is fine by you two and long may it continue
You are lovely people, speak from the heart. Just a little tip, the loop on the mooring pin should face away from the boat so that the strain is on the pin not the loop. Otherwise the loop is at risk of snapping off (as appears to have happened to you). The loop aids the rope to stay connected to the pin that's all. When you cast off you won't leave your pin behind as it will be attached to your rope. The loop can also be used as a guide to knock another pin in at right angles - good for softer ground/bad weather & if you are moored for a period of time. You could use your broken pin for this extra support. You should also wrap some fluorescent covers over the pins so that any walkers on the towpath won't trip on them. Supermarket plastic bags do the job. Keep chugging!
Awesome video! I watched all the ads without skipping so I hope that helps your TH-cam funds. Thank you for being so honest & open as this channel is so valuable to newbie boaters like me lol.
Have you thought about putting out more than one video a week? (Or longer vids with more ads) More vids=more income. Since I'm trapped at home, I will watch just about anything on an entertaining channel like yours. Daily life on the boat. More cooking. DIY stuff. Having to run the boat to top off the batteries vs. how much solar you get in the shorter daylight. Dealing with laundry. I personally would love a video of the struggle/comedy potential of trying to make the bed in the limited space you have. But I'm weird like that. Oh, and heat the hot water for the bedtime water bottle on top of the diesel heater instead of using the stove. That will save on gas costs. Love your vids. Keep them coming.
Thanks PJ for your kind words. 2 videos a week might be difficult because we also work but longer ones is something we could test out at some point! Good tip with the water for the hot water bottle :)
Maybe hot water for the tea also. I know people with a wood stove keep water on continuously. I've heard humidity is a problem on boats, where as in a cabin the humidity is welcome. Liked this video, you got a new subscriber!
Well done, I liked this video. You should do a video about where you are from, family and what other things you like. Tell us more about you guys. Like the boat and thank you for the insight. All the best
Only thing a don’t like about the diesel heaters is the smell awful , if you had a multi stove couldn’t you go for a walk and collect logs n wood that way just me thinking out loud lol new sub
Hi Liam, thanks for your support 🙂 We never really get the bad smells but going out and searching for wood would be fun. We also love the smell of burning coal and seeing the trail of smoke. Diesel stoves do lack charm but we do like ours!
Good rundown on costs hidden and otherwise, one thing I found was engine oil, stern greaser grease, and engine servicing (can be expensive if engine has to be lifted out), one other thing is do you maintain a car? However, the value in the lifestyle is a hugely beneficial in non-monetary terms, happy holidays.. ...Drew
you got yourself a new subscriber it can be tough in all walks of life but stick together on the plan. I shall enjoy more videos from you in the future.
Thanks for another great episode, guys. You are funny and very fun to watch. Please make more ! Congratulations, Sam, on a well deserved win cooking your yummy looking food.
Guys, 2:27 that mooring pin is all wrong, you're using the ring to secure your boat!, that's why the last one broke, take the rope out and turn the ring 180, it needs to be at the back of the pin, use the pins strength. It's there so the pin stays on the rope if it gets pulled out of the ground. Great content, keep up the cruising.
Some good points raised by you both. Like you's I have just started my second year, now and just starting to turn around, was spending £2,200 a month in a rented house in Suffolk, now with only (£6,000) to pay for the boat (Misty J cost me £15,000 paid for on 3 credit cards!) (very gritted teeth) I am starting to see light at the end of the tunnel, ok marina fees, crt, insurance has worked out cheaper , heating & electric less (not so much space to heat or paying both heating oil+electricity compared to a house). I am based on a marina for HGV/PSV license (in order to pay for the boat) I am better of in financial terms but more importantly mental health, now talking to people ( 24 years of living in a village I only know 4 people, at the marina, there around 8-9 people I regularly talk to + at least 2 dozen which I now speak, too ever two too three weeks + visitors to the marina which ask questions, prob the same type of people you meet on the towpath). Pennies are important, but mental health is more! WISHING YOU BOTH, A HAPPY XMAS & EVEN BETTER NEW YEAR.
Hi Vinny, lovely comment. Great to hear you're meeting more people and happier on board. The short time we had at Whilton Marina was great. Lovely people there so completely understand what you mean. Merry Christmas to you too 🙂🎄👍
I am hoping to get a Narrowboat later this year when I take early retirement, you video has been very helpful with regards to cost's for living this dream, now to find a boat and what canal to call home, thank you very much
Great video guys.. but shocked at your food bill per month! We spend that per week!!! Most impressed! Well done to Sam on winning the cooking competition xx
Turn your mooring pins round, that will save you a few quid. The ring at the top should face away from the boat, it’s to ensure the pin is still attached to the rope if it pulls out of the bank, not take the strain of the boat. Can also be used to put a secondary pin through if the bank is a bit soft 😉
I like your channel a lot. I have to say that you guys are doing a great job to live so frugally and yet so well. Your food costs in particular really surprised me. I'm rubbish at maths but that's about £1.50 per person per day. Would love to know the kind of ingredients you buy and the sort of meals you make, to help inspire me. Thanks guys!
Don't forget about Hull Blacking every now and again? I said this before you did and didn't know you were going to say that. Do you use eco friendly soaps and shampoos that can go straight into the cut? Other unseen costs can mean upkeep of fenders, ropework, water hoses, mooring ropes, but look at what you are gaining, laidback lifestyle, far less stress, no shrink needed, replacement of list windlasses etc. Keep smiling👍👍👍
all i can say Is that I am really relieved for Tim that he has Sam to organise him! Youre not alone TIm as I would be in a terrible mess without my Christine!
You've probably been told this by now but when using mooring pins don't hang the boat on the welded ring but rather put the rope around the pin and through the welded ring. Stay safe :-)
Congratulations on your victory Sam, washing up is much more Tim's level ☺️. Also, great to see there is a bit of cash left over for family Christmas presents by the way... that Rolex you were chatting about will be enough for me this year 😅.
Nice one guy's, it seems your ok, clearly the boat is the best option. There is however one cost you forgot to add to the mix, your "Blue Peter membership fee"!!🤣🤣 Sorry I couldn't resist it.☺️🚢🚢🚢
You two are a breath of fresh air especially in this lockdown. I'm from the states so it gives me a little bit of home. Looking forward to many more episodes.
Nice to see that you're both getting ahead with it during these crazy times. I'm sure that your TH-cam revenue will increase over time. Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year.
Seeing you cleaning soot out of the diesel fireplace reminds me of something. When I was young we had an oil-fired floor heater in our house. It was considerably more primitive than your heater, but seemed to be maintenance-free and produced a lot of heat. One evening, as we were having dinner while watching TV, a boom followed by a cloud of soot came from the furnace; we hurried to get everything covered that we could and spent quite a bit of time cleaning up. I don't recall that we ever cleaned the flue, and I suppose that accumulated soot there caught fire and exploded. You might want to consult the manual and/or the manufacturer and see if the flue needs cleaning once in a while.
Great video both, and as others have said, really useful financial information there, and really open sharing income figures. Was really interested in the youtube income - I watch many vloggers and I think you are the only ones I have seen that have talked about actual numbers, so thank you, have always wondered. Hope you both have a wonderful Christmas, stay safe.
Thank you for the informative video, your following on the internet is growing, so well done. I wish our both a Merry Christmas, I am sure you will both have a good one, keep up the good work.
Very informative we hope to get our own boat in the new year . We will be renting out our home and hope it will cover costs . Great to see you guys well done for winning Sam but I did vote for tim bread sauce 👍💕😃
Hi guys I think it’s great that you have been so honest abt being on your boat and the costs it’s good for people thinking of buying a narrow boat and the running costs yes as you say people are different good advice to look into life on the boat before you buy I think if it was me I would hire one for a few weeks and see what life is like on board and how to work all the locks as well
Great video as ever. Just a pedantic point, your Mooring pin is the wrong way around. The ring should face away from the boat so if it cracks and falls off like your old one the rope is still round the back of the pin and the boat will not float away.
My wife and I love your videos, we want to live on a narrowboat and the information you provide is incredibly helpful, thank you so much for sharing it, you're both naturals in front of the camera. I was wondering about the solar panels - do you save a lot of money by having them? Did you pay to have them fitted? It would also be very interesting to see what your shopping list looks like for £95. Please keep making the regular videos, we love them.
So glad you two enjoy the videos. Yes the solar panels are really good for us. We got them installed at the marina we bought her at, so we've never cruised without them. Difficult to know how much we save. We wouldn't want to live without them though. About the costs, it's something we will cover in a future video 🙂🎄👍
Nice Vlog guys and useful for us in our planning for next year. We had worked it out very similar but some of what you added was great to know. Keep chugging guys!
@@chuggingalong some were, insurance,canal/river fees etc think we budgeted for more food (well maybe beer) . Learned alot from all the Vlogs will be sure and have a bottle of sherry handy in case our paths cross next year :)
How much are you guys putting aside for periodic new anodes, boat lifting fees out of the water, and the BSS safety certification checks? Thanks for this interesting video. Would be great to have a post lockdown update once normal life resumes :)
Great video - you two are so fun, and take a different angle to many other narrow boaters, its always great to watch - well done on the costs, and gald to hear that as cashflow is mainly positive, we will see more videos - like others have said, as you are "at home" all day, thermal and slow cooking would make sense - I would also learn some boat maintenance basics (all of the jobs that you mentioned could be diagnosed and probably fixed with some basic knowledge by yourselves - or should I say Sam) that will save you time and money - and why not add a merchandise store? You could then plug the warm winter clothing you would need - Good Luck!
Thanks Ian, yes we are going to try and do an engine service ourselves, we'll see how that goes. That's a good about idea about selling merchandise, we are planning something in that department 🎄👍
@@chuggingalong Good! I would leave the engine service now until the Spring when you start moving along again - its just oil change on engine and gearbox, plus a set of filters - and then do another six months along as you enter winter
Heyo guys, good attitude to have. You'll likely do fine as long as you stick to your goals and don't overreach. I have had to tackle the terror of setting up my budget from scratch. I've just ticked over my first year of NOT being homeless (yay me) which comes after six and a half years homeless! But I was stubborn and refused to panhandle, steal, cheat go back to hustling drugs etc. I kept my ethics, anyway thats irrelevant. My point was y'all have a good head on..her shoulders....I'm sure he's got uses too...sorry just razzing you. Seriously though, you have a good start. A piece of advice I was given that helped me alot. Take a bunch of envelopes, number them. Then based on importance label them IE rent, utilities, work related(in your case hi end internet) food, base commodities (toilet paper, detergent ( eco friendly would be a must as I assume you vent grey water.) Etcetera
I love your video And you have both got a lovely narrowboat And your cost of living is much cheaper than renting a flat Do you ever go out for a meal or drinks?
I live in a bungalow the same sort of thing have a slush fund few pennies in the bank for emergencies just leave it there. Like your gas boiler plays up. Enjoy the video keep it up all the best
Your a sweet young couple. When I was married over 34 years ago and a new career Military wife. My husband was a lowly 1Lt., not much money. It helped that I knew how to can, pickle (ferment), dry and freeze food. I also do all my own natural herb medicines and other products. (Just for my family). You also might look into container gardening in small place and indoors. Both really help keep the food bill down. After 5 children, I can also give easy, fast, filling recipes. However, we claim Southern Arizona has our home State. So my recipes have a kick! Like jalapeno butter and homemade salsa. My husband and I enjoy cooking together. Have a look on line and enjoy. Take care.
Like any homeowner situation there will always be expected expenses, and emergency fund expenses. If you're not putting away at a minimum $100 a month for emergencies you are really pressing your luck. Side jobs and careful savings are a must no matter if your living on land or water. Definitely downsizing to a narrowboat is a blessing if you're able to do it because your yearly expenses will be a 20th of what it will cost on land.
Another excellent, fun, and informative vlog! Congratulations, Sam, on the win, and Tim, on being so gracious about it. Better luck next time! Sam, absolutely love, love, love the new hairstyle!! Have a very Merry and Safe Christmas!
Wow brill vlog and very honest .. £95 a month on food does that include all the little I must get some more milk etc .. I’m in awe as mines like 4 x that a month I must be doing something wrong.. please do a vlog on shopping for your month cos I would like to copy your shop .. but well done and I must try harder to be careful what I buy 😁 .. keep vlogging what a lovely couple you are :)
Hi Tim & Sam, great vlog. You are aware BOAT is an acronym for Bring Out Another Thousand? 😋 Put some money away for new batteries as well as you wont get much change from a grand to replace those and you must replace them as a set, just the leisures I mean here. If the starter battery is fine, you wont need to replace that one. 👍🏻
have you guys ever thought about converting to Electric, Wind turbine and solar with a backup emergency generator, either lithium ion or deep cycle truck/boat batteries?

Where your average cost is concerned, David from Cruising the Cut has done a similar video a year or 2 back and he came out at 6 or 6 and a half grand a year, so about 500-ish pounds a month on average with a couple of months mooring over both the summer holidays and winter. So, with 2 datapoints very similar to each other, I'd say you're right on the spot with your costs!

Thanks Jilli, Seasons greetings to you too 🎄
I have just bought a narrowboat after selling my house I have never done this before and after watching your video I have gathered some quite useful information guys. Appreciate that. Even considering setting up a video blog of my own with my girlfriend. Hope you are both living the life on you're boat. Much love from Manchester ❤
Good luck with vlogging and boating! It's a great community. Keep chugging
@@chuggingalong reply love that you replied. Currently living in our boat Duke in Manchester.. has taken some adjusting and getting used too but getting there. But won't lie I've fallen in love with it, every time I walk up to him after being out it's like the first. Hope you guys are well. 👍
Phew! I’m glad you’re continuing. I love your channel.
Thanks for watching Jules 🎄
I follow a couple of boat-tubers avidly and you are now added into that small group, i live up north my advice to you is winter down south its a few degrees warmer, i hope you get to venture to the northern parts of the canal network in the future. I wish you both a merry xmas and remember "keep chugging"
Hi Eric, that's an honour to be on your list, lots of great vloggers out there. Yes, we plan to venture north next year 🎄🙂
Well done for being down to earth and I hope you continue cruising. Looking forward to meeting you one day when we pass on narrowboats 🎉
Hi. Firstly, I love your videos and thanks! About five years ago I wanted to move and live on a narrowboat. However, I didn't know how I would make a wage. I have taught English in Thailand for 14 years and seeing that you teach online, and on the boat too has made me seriously think about making the change. Thanks! Merry Xmas!
Lovely real video about expenses on your boat. Thank you for your honesty. It's questions like finance that I think make your videos unique 👍
Thanks Eric, glad you enjoyed the video :)
Thank you for your lovely comment. We are glad you liked the video!
Alan x
Thanks for subscribing Alan, glad you're enjoying the videos 🙂🎄👍
Hope you know that your low-costs are really impressive, especially on food. We've been spending more on our boat lately, e.g., on power tools to pull up a floorboard, and this has made me think that we should look more closely at our expenditure. Thanks for your openness :)
Thanks for your comment Thomas 🎄👍 We have also spent quite a lot of things for the boat
Ah I see! Good to know. Thanks for the tip Peter 🙂🎄
Yep, the ring is to stop the rope slipping off the pin, NOT to take the weight of the boat!
Hitting 10k subscribers would be great for us 🙂🎄
Cute hairstyle Sam!! Have a safe Christmas xxx
I thought you covered the subject very well, providing numbers around some of the narrowboat-specific 'must-haves'. Very useful as I'm costing out my own water-borne 'Plan B'
My favorite vlog so far 😁💜 I just started watching this past week 👍
A great honest video, the cold would be my biggest problem, Have a great one both of you!
Thanks for watching Andy. The fireplace makes it really really hot inside! Cold isn't really a big problem :)
Thank you so much for your wonderful comment, Philip. Wishing the best for you too 🙂👍🎄
What an ABSOLUTELY wonderful new discovery YOU TOO. Beautiful delightful, refreshing, engaging, bright, fun, interesting and then some. Thank you..
Thank you very much for your kind words Lawrence 🙂👍👍🏾
Haha! Very true 🙂🎄👍
Thanks for the great tips Louise 🙂👍
Money can't buy the happiness you share!!
Great information as ever.
Well done Sam and as for Tim's cooking........ keep practicing the singing!!
Thanks for your lovely comment Jilly 🎄🎄🙂
Awesome video! I watched all the ads without skipping so I hope that helps your TH-cam funds. Thank you for being so honest & open as this channel is so valuable to newbie boaters like me lol.
Much appreciated that you're watching the ads all the way through 👍🎄 Good to hear from a fellow newbie boater 🌊
Liked this video, you got a new subscriber!
good to hear you will continue " chugging along . " hope 2121 will be a graet year for you both .
Thanks for your support. Keep chugging 🙂👍🌟
Well done, I liked this video. You should do a video about where you are from, family and what other things you like. Tell us more about you guys. Like the boat and thank you for the insight. All the best
Good idea! Thanks for commenting Matthew 🙂🎄
Fantastic show,a credit to both of you.Respect from Liverpool UK
Thank you Leonard 😁👍👍🏾 Keep chugging
Only thing a don’t like about the diesel heaters is the smell awful , if you had a multi stove couldn’t you go for a walk and collect logs n wood that way just me thinking out loud lol new sub
Hi Liam, thanks for your support 🙂 We never really get the bad smells but going out and searching for wood would be fun. We also love the smell of burning coal and seeing the trail of smoke. Diesel stoves do lack charm but we do like ours!
Great vlog guys , good to see an honest answer to how you earn your money , have a great Christmas and new year xx
Glad you enjoyed the video Graham. Thanks and have a great Christmas yourself 👍🎄
Good rundown on costs hidden and otherwise, one thing I found was engine oil, stern greaser grease, and engine servicing (can be expensive if engine has to be lifted out), one other thing is do you maintain a car? However, the value in the lifestyle is a hugely beneficial in non-monetary terms, happy holidays.. ...Drew
Cheers Drew! Ah that's interesting about engine oil. No car at the moment for us.
you got yourself a new subscriber it can be tough in all walks of life but stick together on the plan.
I shall enjoy more videos from you in the future.
That's great to hear, thanks for chugscribing 🙂👍
Thanks for another great episode, guys. You are funny and very fun to watch. Please make more ! Congratulations, Sam, on a well deserved win cooking your yummy looking food.
Thank you!! Glad you're enjoying the videos 🙂🎄👍
Thanks for the tip! We were new to boating at the time. Keep chugging!
@@chuggingalong nice one, yeah it's a common mistake even 'seasoned' boaters make, some sort of unconscious rope magic!. Stay lucky.
Just found your channel and seen a few videos. I like the style and energy from you two!
Thanks! Glad you're enjoying the videos :)
Another great video!! Welcome to home ownership. Love you both and wishing you a Merry Christmas and amazing healthy New year
Thanks Penney, glad you enjoyed the video :)
Merry Christmas to you too 🙂🎄👍
I am hoping to get a Narrowboat later this year when I take early retirement, you video has been very helpful with regards to cost's for living this dream, now to find a boat and what canal to call home, thank you very much
Hi there, so happy we could help. That's very exciting! Good luck with the search 🙂👍 Thanks for watching
Very interesting.......living on a boat has one big advantage,.....you can change your location as often as you want......
That's very true! One of the main reasons we thought a narrowboat was a good idea 🙂👍
Great video guys.. but shocked at your food bill per month! We spend that per week!!! Most impressed! Well done to Sam on winning the cooking competition xx
Thanks for watching Sally 🙂🎄
Turn your mooring pins round, that will save you a few quid. The ring at the top should face away from the boat, it’s to ensure the pin is still attached to the rope if it pulls out of the bank, not take the strain of the boat. Can also be used to put a secondary pin through if the bank is a bit soft 😉
Thanks Andy for the tips 🙂👍🎄
I like your channel a lot. I have to say that you guys are doing a great job to live so frugally and yet so well. Your food costs in particular really surprised me. I'm rubbish at maths but that's about £1.50 per person per day. Would love to know the kind of ingredients you buy and the sort of meals you make, to help inspire me. Thanks guys!
Thanks for your kind comment Jonathon. Yes we can definitely include food costs in a future video 🎄🙂👍
Thanks Frank, yes we use eco friendly soaps 😁🙂👍👍🏾
Loved this video folks, very honest appraisal. I know these costs and your bang on. Such a helpful vlog. Much love Richie.. from our narrowboat home
Thanks Richie, glad you enjoyed it mate 🙂🎄👍
all i can say Is that I am really relieved for Tim that he has Sam to organise him! Youre not alone TIm as I would be in a terrible mess without my Christine!
You guys are great....rarely heard anyone as honest as you are...thank you...stay safe 💜🎸👍
Thank you for your kind words Fred :)
Just went to the market and got you a Zolex bro 👍🎄🙂
Nice one guy's, it seems your ok, clearly the boat is the best option. There is however one cost you forgot to add to the mix, your "Blue Peter membership fee"!!🤣🤣 Sorry I couldn't resist it.☺️🚢🚢🚢
Haha! Cheers for your comment Robert as always 🎄👍
You two are a breath of fresh air especially in this lockdown. I'm from the states so it gives me a little bit of home. Looking forward to many more episodes.
Always interested in how constant cruisers get to doctors and dentists? Do you just drop in at the nearest surgery?
Loving the vlogs.
Thank you both. This has been a great help for me ;)
Glad we could help you Brian! Thanks for watching 😁🙂👍👍🏾
Nice to see that you're both getting ahead with it during these crazy times. I'm sure that your TH-cam revenue will increase over time. Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year.
Thanks Reg, Merry Christmas to you too 🙂🎄👍
Seeing you cleaning soot out of the diesel fireplace reminds me of something.
Oh wow! That's a great story/tip. Thanks for that Alan :)
My pleasure. Chimney fires (in conventional chimneys with wood fuel) can be horrific. I shouldn't think that you could have anything comparable.
Very interesting and informative. Love your honesty. So happy you can live on the cut. There's only oneway your channel on TH-cam TH-cam is going
Glad you enjoyed the video Thomas and thanks for your kind words on the channel :)
I think l need some English lessons from you guys. Stay safe.
Hi Mark, no problem, we'd always been curious about TH-cam money too, so we're happy to share 😂🎄👍
Thank you for the informative video, your following on the internet is growing, so well done. I wish our both a Merry Christmas, I am sure you will both have a good one, keep up the good work.
Thanks Andrew. Hope you have a great Christmas yourself 🙂🎄
Just came across your channel good to see you both cooking healthy recipes!
Very informative we hope to get our own boat in the new year . We will be renting out our home and hope it will cover costs . Great to see you guys well done for winning Sam but I did vote for tim bread sauce 👍💕😃
Hi Pamela, that's exciting and great idea with renting out your house 🙂🎄👍 We wish you luck with it all
Thank you, really helpful and a good insight to the costs. Hope you had a nice Christmas on Mary L x
Hi guys I think it’s great that you have been so honest abt being on your boat and the costs it’s good for people thinking of buying a narrow boat and the running costs yes as you say people are different good advice to look into life on the boat before you buy I think if it was me I would hire one for a few weeks and see what life is like on board and how to work all the locks as well
Thanks! Yes, try before you buy is a great option 🙂🎄👍
Great video as ever. Just a pedantic point, your Mooring pin is the wrong way around. The ring should face away from the boat so if it cracks and falls off like your old one the rope is still round the back of the pin and the boat will not float away.
Thanks for your kind words Phil. We've had another comment also point that out. Good to know 👍🎄
Merry Christmas guys, love your infectious outlook to chugging . Keep chugging
Thanks Peter, glad you're enjoying the videos 🙂🎄👍
How nice and informative! Merry Christmas and some really good and plentiful Chistmas dinners! 🌶🍗🍠🥟🧄🥓🥨🍖🧀🍦🍻
Cheers mate! Merry Christmas to you too 🙂👍🎄
You guys are awesome. Thank you for sharing a part of your life with us. Happy Christmas. May you have a great one. 😁
It's our pleasure to share. Hope you have a great one too Michelle. Thanks for your continued support :)
Well I've just subbed and I'll be sure to watch every ad to the end✊ good luck to you both!
Cheers Mike 😀
Thankyou for your honesty on the costs very useful information, Interesting and good banter ^^
Cheers mate as always 🙂🎄👍
This is my first visit. Good on’ya!
Nice Vlog guys and useful for us in our planning for next year. We had worked it out very similar but some of what you added was great to know. Keep chugging guys!
Glad we could help mate! And that our numbers were similar to yours :)
@@chuggingalong some were, insurance,canal/river fees etc think we budgeted for more food (well maybe beer) . Learned alot from all the Vlogs will be sure and have a bottle of sherry handy in case our paths cross next year :)
@@jamcamcam-webecruising2329 haha! Sounds good to us 🙂👍
So good to see its all working out for you both and you living the dream so you go for it as your both young and I hope you make many memories 🙂
Thanks for your kind words Leslie 🙂👍🎄
How much are you guys putting aside for periodic new anodes, boat lifting fees out of the water, and the BSS safety certification checks? Thanks for this interesting video. Would be great to have a post lockdown update once normal life resumes :)
Great information! Thanks so much for sharing this with us.
Our pleasure, thanks for watching and commenting Evie 🎄🙂
Then based on importance label them
IE rent, utilities, work related(in your case hi end internet) food, base commodities (toilet paper, detergent ( eco friendly would be a must as I assume you vent grey water.) Etcetera
I love your video
And you have both got a lovely narrowboat
And your cost of living is much cheaper than renting a flat
Do you ever go out for a meal or drinks?
I live in a bungalow the same sort of thing have a slush fund few pennies in the bank for emergencies just leave it there. Like your gas boiler plays up. Enjoy the video keep it up all the best
Nice! That's sensible. Thanks for commenting Terry 🙂🎄
Some really useful and interesting information. Keep up the good work and Netflix might come calling one day!
Glad you enjoyed the video Glynn :)
Take care.
Hi, thanks for your comment. Your food sounds lovely, we like spice! Pickling food sounds like fun too 🙂👍🌟
Like any homeowner situation there will always be expected expenses, and emergency fund expenses.
That's true. Thanks for your comment Dave! Keep chugging
You are both wonderful ,thanks for info ,have a lovely Christmas and stay safe .
Thanks Claire, Merry Christmas to you too 🎄🙂👍
Excellent video, your living the dream and I love it, I will definitely have one in the future
Please keep the videos coming 🙂
Great to hear Ben! Thanks for your support 👍🙂🌟
Another excellent, fun, and informative vlog! Congratulations, Sam, on the win, and Tim, on being so gracious about it. Better luck next time! Sam, absolutely love, love, love the new hairstyle!! Have a very Merry and Safe Christmas!
Thanks for your lovely comment Everon :)
Hi guys...another great vlog. Health is wealth, you have a great time chugging on that smashing narrow boat.
Keep safe.

Thanks Jonathan, glad you enjoyed the video :)
Glad you like the video Shelagh, yes we that's something we could do a video on for sure :)
Haha! Yes that is true. We got new leisure batteries (3) when we bought the boat. 120ah, they were around 125GBP each. Thanks for watching Metal :)
you are a great pair, I really love watching you two. as for you girl you really come across as a happy person, great to see. best regards ,
“ Happy Christmas & Continue The Love” !
have you guys ever thought about converting to Electric, Wind turbine and solar with a backup emergency generator, either lithium ion or deep cycle truck/boat batteries?
