As always you gave me a good laugh, which is a precious thing in these troublesome times. Enjoy your toilet in whichever form.you chose. A good dump is one thing that joins all humanity together.
Randomly came across this vlog series and I have to say, what a refreshing young couple starting their adventures doing something I wish I could do. Unfortunately wife and health problems prevent me. Keep up the good work and keeeeeeep chugging.
Brilliant vlog about a bog Well done to you both on an excellent channel. I have a compost toilet on my van I’ve been living on for 7 months (while I search for a boat) it’s definitely the way to go. “jar of honey and a box of chocolates” priceless 👏🏼 Andy
Hi Both, we live aboard our boat ,James no.1. We have a Strumpet and Trollop compost toilet........best thing we ever done/changed on our boat. We love your enthusiasm for narrowboat life. Love that “jar of honey and a box of chocolates “ thing..the song. Hmmm m...anyway we did notice the wee bottle size of the simploo and thought it a bit small (3 of us aboard) that’s why we went for Strumpet and Trollop (they have a bigger pee bottle available, 10 litre) as for smell we really really don’t have any. Peace be your journey , and keep it up 👍
An absolute joy from start to finish! I do worry if any of your friends or family get a "box of chocolates" for Christmas though. Come chugging up to the Lancaster canal sometime too!
You two are such fun! Who knew that talking about a toilet could be so exciting! Perhaps you could have a Vlog about what a typical day is like for you. Mark from Colorado
Dear Sam & Tim, I made us an experimental composting "loo" for our 1981 aluminium travel trailer ( caravan ) all for about Can $75 ( 48 quid +- ) including a nice comfy seat! The outside is all of 1/2" plywood screwed, bonded and varnished and the " business end " of it inside is a scavenged 20 litre plastic pail which is simply lined with a garbage / rubbish bag and we typically use sawdust, earth or other suitable material in the pail and when full dispose of it all in an appropriate manner. It works surprisingly well and with care doesn't smell etc. Typically it lasts between 1-2 weeks before dumping. Good luck and keep chugging, Niall Leslie, Ontario, Canada.
Hi Niall, thanks for the comment. Those aluminium caravans are so cool. And great work with the homemade toilet. One day 'Leslie's' could be the 'Thetford' for the compost toilet world
Hi guys , best thing we done going compost, ours is a compoost we went for the deluxe not much change from a grand, never used the fan and no smells at all , good to see you keeping well so keep on chugging 👍👍
Well, now I can't look at a jar of honey or a box of chocolates without thinking of poo and wee. Forrest Gump once said 'life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're gonna get'. This video completely changed that and I'll quietly chuckle to myself like a schoolboy whenever I hear that. As for a slush puppy... Great video Tim and Sam, I think your both great.
I too am disappointed with the lack of Elsan points on the southern system. In researching, I too came across Simploo and had a great chat with Kate and purchased one. Not disappointed in any way. Used for 3 weeks now and can empty at any stage the waste into the bins. Love it. Price point and value is amazing!
Hi guys,I read this week that the rct is going to stop people but the compost from toilets in there rubbish bins please check on this, great video lol good song hehe take care keep safe keep them coming,John 🌺🌺🙊🙉🙈🥂❤️🌹✅
I have read another bog blog where they have used cat litter in the composting toilet. I think it worked out ok and they have now also installed a giant scratching post and are eating a lot more tuna. 🐈🐈🐈
Another great episode..really enjoying your enthusiasm, a friendly mention as a local, as soon as lockdown ends get above Newbury as soon as possible, because the river kennet during heavy rain becomes tricky and the water coming through Newbury town centre bottles to a point where forward motion stops.. good luck and stay safe..👍
Another nice video, my only complaint that you kept us all waiting a week for it, ha ha. well done both of you, and my Best Wishes. Want to see another video soon please.
Hello from Canada! We too are boaters and live aboard our sailboat 7 months of the year. We use the airhead composting toilet which is a seperating toilet and uses coconut coir as a medium. I'm curious to hear what it's like to empty your solids bin. Ours has actually no sewage smell other than an earthy scent when emptying. Zero smell all other times. Really enjoy your videos! Keep them coming, you're doing great!
One pot cooking on a wood fired stove is heaven and you don’t lose nutrients as they all stay in the one pot. We got to go to a little beach cottage for two weeks every summer and we either cooked on a little wood stove 😋 or a microwave 🤢. In the morning we’d bank the fire, add the meat ,veg and spices, add lots of liquid and take off for the day having fun with the kids. When we’d get back the cottage would smell heavenly from slow cooked food that had simmered all day. I’d make a quick salad and have bread or rolls from a local bakery and it was great eating.🤤. One day we hiked miles back in the woods to a waterfall to swim and bask in the sun, pan for gold, study the flora and fauna then hike back. I discovered elderberries along the path and we picked the now empty cooler full. On the way back to cottage we stopped to get bottles , citric acid and sugar and that night I made elderberry jelly. Puffed up with pride , the next day I tracked down chokecherry berries and make a lovely big batch of chokecherry jelly on the little stove. We discovered the field across the road was full of blackberries so added that to the winters fare. It was really easy to make on the wood stove, much easier than I thought. So now I’m excited to see your, little stove cooking. When I was young we lived in a railway station and only had an outhouse for a bathroom. Ew so it wasn’t long before my Dad installed a bathroom with an actual flushable toilet . Good luck with your new throne, hopefully it doesn’t stink too much. 🤭 Lol 🥰🙋🏼
Hi guys you've done it again, a good informative performance about your toilet. You could do this as a comedy script on stage and with the musical script, Brill. Well done , be with you on the next, many thanks (PJ).
All this musical activity. It can't be long until the record deal. The album out in time for next Christmas. I already have a title for you. Now That's What I Call Chugging.
From a reliable authority (The Navy Lark: ancient BB radio comedy), the correct terminology is the "sharp end" and the "blunt end", even though there's not that much difference on narrow boat.
Excellent presentation on such a moving subject ( was about to say close to my heart but that didn't physically scan very well) moving on..... anyway; good to see you back plus not sure how would you do 'all singing and dancing ' ( quote Sam) review around the loo. More importantly on the bicycle front I think its Sam 1-Tim 0, thanks and looking forward to next adventure. lol
I love the way you keep referring to composters as "if you are that way inclined" 😅 Tim does this mean you are in the sit-down wee gang 😅 I love a good sit-down wee me 😎 The price shocked me a bit though 😯 it's like a week's wages for a few plastic boxes 🤯
Thanks for the comment as always Camberwell :) Yes, It's the first gang i've ever been in haha! . Yeah, we know what you mean with it being pretty basic for the cost, I would say it's a good business to get into. If it stands the test of time I think it will be fair though
@@chuggingalong yeah I guess there's more to it than "a few plastic boxes" - that was silly of me to say 😛 it just shocked me because I did a bit of bathroom fitting with my mate and I know a full khazi for a house (pan, tank, and all the fittings) can be as little as a hundred quid! 😯
Thanks so much for the Loo review! I was trying to decide which composting toilet to use in my van build. Most of them are so expensive. I like the simplicity of this set-up and it's still less than most (even with the shipping to California).
That was a bit cringey and I was embarrassed on his behalf 😅 but I checked the video and he's a really cool dude. Mad how much global coverage the narrowboat vloggers get. I know there are live-aboard boaters worldwide but the British continuous cruising style is truly unique. 🙂
Flush puppies and merching your compost! You two learn fast!. If you keep a spray bottle by your loo to give it a short squirt after each use you'll be smelling like roses. A bit of cat litter in your solids bag helps too,.
Very interesting down to earth discussion about what really matters. 👍🏻. My cat is relieved (oops no pun intended) that I've finally stopped laughing 😆🤣😂👍🏻
In the 80’s our military shower as you call it. A full NBCD from nuclear attack was 3 minutes, 1 min top half,1 min bottom half and 1 min rinse all over.
I obviously need to get out more as i look forward to your vlogs. I am also starting to get an interest in your choice of knitwear i thought sams yellow number was particularly nice. Regarding your compost tiolet review, you got to the bottom of issues , it was not a bum report and certainly not full of crap. I bet you are feeling flushed with success on your choice of tiolet at the moment🥸
You should compost for 1 year + if it's going to be used for food crops, preferably with a "soak" (sawdust, straw, leafmould or even soil). If your stove was burning wood, you could use the ashes (cold, of course) as an anti-smell layer when needed, but definitely not coal ash.
I've been 'researching' compost toilets for years (building a tiny house on wheels). Great book if you're wanting to learn more is The Humanure Book by Joseph Jenkins. Those that have composted awhile recommend coconut core 'bricks' for the solids bin to reduce odors. Storage was a big plus for the bricks instead of pet bedding or similar materials. Especially on a boat (see Narrowboat Experience compost videos). And sugar in the liquids container seems the favorite for keeping odors down. Hope this helps reduce your 'research' time! Lol! Looking forward to your review. Love your channel. Keep up the great work!! 😉
The carbon filter certainly makes installation a breeze; but if one has a vent to the outside it ought to work just as well. I remember being in a densely settled neighborhood overseas where that was almost universal; the only time there was a stink was when the vacuum truck came around to pump out the tanks/pits.
Hi, regarding water usage of the toilets, surely with a cassette toilet the only water it uses is that which is added to the waste and is then emptied as you say, about every five days. Assuming only half of the contents is flushing water, half a cassette every five days isn’t really a lot of water is it? You may well find that onboard washing out of the liquids container uses just as much! Great videos, thanks!
Chugging along Florida edition ..lol can't wait to see that... now you got the remix song does that mean your giving up your singing careers hahaha. as for smells if you keep the solids covered it should not smell if it does try using Semi Composted Wood Chip / Mulch
Recently started watching you.I,m curious about two things. Having a washing machine, how do you dry your clothes, are you allowed to use an incinerator toilet?
Hi Guys. Great vids. Thanks for sharing. Now you've had your composting toilet for while please could you let us know how you are getting on with it. Does it live up to all your expectations?
Could you maybe include a bit of how you handle laundry and shopping? I haven’t watched all your videos yet so forgive me if you already have. Thanks 😊
10 out of 10 chugging. Loved the extra flourishes. Some questions: 1) No coconut coir to reduce smell and promote composting (or sawdust)? 2) are you going to work your way through all the bodily functions in subsequent vlogs? 3) I’m trying to reproduce the synth bass in your theme music. Any pointers where you got it?
Hi Dietrich, a 10?! we are very flattered at that. We have been using scented sawdust so far. We plan on trying coconut and cat litter as well. The music is call 'Earth Bound' by Slynk and we got it from the TH-cam Audio Library. We can email it to you if you can't get hold of it
A couple of garden boxes (his and hers) on the roof and seel who can grow the best. Serious bit now; a few wood shavings (from pet shop) or shredded paper on top of the produce cuts the smell and helps to compost I believe. Did it come with a cup holder?
Hi... great vlog 👍 We’re looking at changing from cassette to waterless and our ‘musts’ are no drilling the roof/hull for vent pipes and it must look like a toilet. Simploo + carbon (as you have it) is nudging its way to the top of the list... what swung it for you as being ‘the one’? Cheers 🖖
Hi Clive, we chose it because it was the cheapest one we could find 😂 We also saw another review of it on TH-cam. We have another video on our channel about our compost toilet where we talk about the downsides, check it out! We are satisfied with the product though 🙂 Thanks for watching our videos 👍👍🏾
Sorry folks but think you miss the point of a composting loo, you might as well have a bucket. Empty into a plastic bag and leave your waste in a bin on a par with using the chemicals in a cassette loo. Pouring your wee by trees is likely a good idea especially oak trees apparently they make use of the tannin in the urine. Do like your nice easy style of video and will watch more. Hope you get up to wales this year.
Apart from the expense, did you consider an Incinerator Wc? Vlogs on a 'touch motion' kitchen tap or water saving shower head and a sample of best WiFi products would be good, like the American RVers do. Try a shout out to the companies and see if they'll give you them as a sponsored trial video like the RV folk across the pond x.
In Norway we have cabins and often require these type of toilets, we favour Cinderella that burns it all....NB are slow to take these up as they are more costly but the best fir sure... look them up just out of interest.
Convenient now to use your new convenience. You've set yourselves a task now to do a song for each episode. Your liquid waste would be good on a lemon tree.
Thanks as always, Brian. That's a good tip about the lemon tree, are there many in England? Don't want to go into a farmer's field and empty the bottle though haha
They only call these composting toilets to con eco friendly people into buying them they are just dry toilets or waterless if you prefer that term.what you collect in your dry toilet can be turned into compost but it takes one year before it is allowed to be used as compost on flowers or 18 months before you can use it on veg so as you can see you can't compost in the toilet it is just to collect the waste.
You guys should do kids TV!
I mean that sincerely, I think you'd be great at it!

We can email it to you if you can't get hold of it
Just to let you know this loo has more than tripled in price now
You guys just sang a song about bogs Hahahahahahahahahahahaa genius!!!!
Thanks for the comment Sian. We were challenged, we had to do it!
"Poo" the musical. West End theatre material.
A couple of garden boxes (his and hers) on the roof and seel who can grow the best. Serious bit now; a few wood shavings (from pet shop) or shredded paper on top of the produce cuts the smell and helps to compost I believe. Did it come with a cup holder?
Haha! Now Bob, that's an idea for the Chelsea Flower Show!
Hi... great vlog 👍 We’re looking at changing from cassette to waterless and our ‘musts’ are no drilling the roof/hull for vent pipes and it must look like a toilet.
@@chuggingalong ... thank you very much... I’ve caught up with the other vlog also ... bloomin’ CRT😖
Hi guys, like the video thank you. How are you getting on with the compost toilet - is it still working great?
Hi Rebecca, thanks for your comment, we will be making an in-depth video on this very soon 🙂
The crapper 😁
Omg I paid a grand for mine! Woowoo compost toilet.
Oh well I love mine. I call it my grand toilet 😂
Haha! Nice name 🙂 It probably has more features than ours!
Thanks for the comment Valerie, we weren't aware of that type
P.s the songs are getting better 😜
Have you considered just hanging the bags of poo from trees, seems quite popular.
Honey and chocolates, I have never laughed so hard.
Thanks for watching Jan :)
Excellent - very informative lol
Thanks as always David :)
In Norway we have cabins and often require these type of toilets, we favour Cinderella that burns it all....NB are slow to take these up as they are more costly but the best fir sure... look them up just out of interest.
Oh interesting!!
@@chuggingalong Buy a lemon tree as part of your boat's greenery. Juice, pulp, and rind for food and drink.

That's true, calling it a dry toilet makes more sense
Well this is great and I'm looking forward to the musical. WET SIDE STORY or even MARLY L POOPINS.
Haha!
@@chuggingalong I really think you guys are amazing. Have binge watched all the videos and look forward to many more.
cover the poo with coconut coir and there won't be any smell, fan/filter or not. Been using one for over 2 years now.
I think I’ll give the Chugging Along compost a miss 😂
Agreed 😂
Haha! We'll have to take the idea on Dragon's Den then
Putting human waste into rubbish bins is illegal like you said it takes six months to compost down to become safe
