  • Lots of my patients do Pilates, and they are keen to return to it after they've had a hip replacement. Is it safe to do all of the exercises? I didn't know much about the Pilates Method, so I went to meet Gemma Pearson at Winchester Pilates. She told me about her approach to people with hip problems and demonstrated some of the exercises that she uses. I found it really helpful, and I hope that you do as well. If you'd like to know more then please get in touch.

This is fantastic! I loved learning from the Pilates instructor. She was great! Also, a surprise bonus - the history of Pilates. It never occurred to me to wonder where it came from. Bravo! Thanks.

Thank you Carol. He was an interesting man who clearly had a great vision and the determination to make it come to life.

Thanks Jeremy Your absolutely right it is a great way to build up core strength we use do it when I played rugby as part of core stability training .Its also right as you say to use it pre and post hip replacement. It will be of great use to anyone watching this video that needs a replacement. Spot on again Jeremy. We love you.

Thanks Lee. It was very informative to spend some time with Gemma. I'm tempted to do some classes myself!

Does there ever come a point where I can do a TFL/piriformis stretch after hip replacement? By that I mean sitting on the floor with legs stretched out then putting the foot of one leg over the other next to the thigh and twisting in the other direction.

You would need to discuss that with your surgeon. Everyone is different and whilst some people might well be able to do this move, there could be risk factors that preclude it in other.

Sure some young person who has hip surgery recovers fast and do any kind of exercise.

Are you supposed to clinch the buttocks at the top of the bridge?

I think it's important to do whatever makes you feel comfortable!
