It is revealed by Nomura the Time Traveling nature of Xehanort actually starts when Master Xehanort willingly releases his Heart to possess Terra. When that happens, Time Transcendence occurs, and every version of Xehanort gains the Ability to Time travel. Not the Power, but the ability. The Power is provided by Darkness. This is why Mind Master Xehanort inside Terra tells him about the "multiple paths he might take". Because releasing his Heart to become Terranort triggers the Time traveling possibilities. When Sora Time Travels, the Power is either provided by The Wizards (Merlin and Yen Sid) or Riku's Light as a Portal to a Higher Plane. Sora can Time Travel because Sora Willingly sacrificed his form to save Kairi. Riku can because he gave his Heart to Ansem, Seeker of Darkness, and Ansem threw his Heart into the Realm of Darkness when he started resisting.
I still think Nomura pulled this one out of his ass. Time travel was a plot point in the timeless river and the characters and Pete didn’t even have to give up their physical bodies to do it. Also, Sora was not there at all in the far past. So he has no other self to go to. Nomura just wanted to gather all of the Xehanorts together for a grand finale.
Remember Wizards can also create Portals of Time Statis (see Yen Sid and Merlin). And right before Pete creates the Door, he makes a Wish upon his Heart (a Star). In Disney Canon, that invokes a Magic Being (the Blue Fairy ) to grant the Wish. Second. It is explained that if any version of a Character releases their Heart willingly at any point in their Timeline, or any version, they gain the ability to time travel across all their Timeline(s). Not the power but the ability. And if you have access to Darkness ( the Power) , boom. Third, If Sora is the Child of Destiny or a part of them, The Master wrote Sora in the Book in the far past and more than likely made a Data copy, which counts. Fourth, If you have access to a Magic Being (Wizard, Fairy) and you have released your Heart once in any form in your Timeline(s), they can allow you to Time Travel bodily. It is what Yen Sid did to send Sora and Riku back in Time in Dream Drop. (Remember, Sora released his Heart willingly to get Kairi's Heart out, and Riku's Heart was thrown out of his body after he started to resist Ansem, Seeker of Darkness after the latter possessed him. Of course, Riku willingly let Ansem SOD in first.)
This was a good explanation for the time travel. As for MoM's identity? I think he is the origin of the "role" Ansem the Wise played: the teacher whom was betrayed by his six apprentices and went mad while seeking to make things right. His identity beyond that is currently unknowable
Never forget that in the kh universe its entirely possible to clone your heart through letting your nobody grow a new one. And with that clone heart you can send it into the future then later on use your own heart to take control of the clone even if it is thousonds of years in the future
