    For everybody to unterstand that:
    "I can't explain it. I was actually in one of my best positions at that corner when it went. It looked silly and stupid but better it happens today than tomorrow." Ayrton Senna after spin on a Training session in Aida
    “I messed up the transition from active suspension [in 1993] back to passive and designed a car that was aerodynamically unstable, in which Ayrton attempted to do things the car was not capable of doing.” Adrian Newey
    Paddy Lowe, who had left Williams for McLaren in 1994, said in 2014, "Aerodynamic experimentation in those days was not sophisticated enough to understand the ride height sensitivity of aero. In the windtunnel now we run ride height sweeps, steer sweeps, roll sweeps, and yaw sweeps, plus a load more. Back then, if a typical model was running different front and rear ride heights in a straight line, you were at the leading edge of sophistication.
    "That would mean the impact of introducing a much wider range of ride heights on circuit [through not having active suspension] would be greater than people were perhaps able to deal with. I’m making this up really to fit what we observed. Certainly Ayrton really struggled with the Williams in the early season, and some of his complaints would fit that theory."
    Newey said to the German Auto, Motor & Sport magazine in 2015 that "[The 1994 Nogaro test] ... confirmed that the car's side pods were too long, which meant that the aero were split from the diffuser when the nose of the car dipped and the side-pods got too close to the track"
    "... our car was in pole position in all 3 races, but that was Ayrton. No other driver could do that with this car".
    The Williams Car (FW16) was springy and unstable, with aerodynamic deficiencies. After little modifications for Imola Senna said is "worse" than before.
    Gerhard Berger recalled a conversation he had with Senna at the race in which Senna said "We are now finally aware of the problem with this car and in two or three weeks from now the problems should be solved." Senna was right.
    Following the Imola changes the car was again incrementally updated and labelled as FW16B by the German Grand Prix. This version featured a longer wheelbase, revised front and rear wing, shortened sidepods and the compulsory opened rear on the airbox and cowling in accordance with FIA regulations following the accidents at Imola. The shortened sidepods arose due to a necessity to use larger bargeboards after the front wing endplate diffusers were banned. This version of the car proved to be very fast. Hill closes the gap to Schumacher a little and fights for the championship.
    I copied the text and shared it here because it is very informative. It was a comment under another senna video

      Some of this is true, but not all and a lot of it is out of context.
      - Senna was actually happy with the setup after getting pole, for the first time ever being happy with the car
      - The car was sometimes unstable and unpredictable, however aero instability translates to very visible traits in the car's behavior. Those were not observed when he crashed at Tamburello
      - His movements in the cockpit (hands, head, helmet in mirror) are not consistent with oversteer or opposite lock correction, but consistent with aiming to go left with a steering system that is collapsing in his hands
      - Tamburello was not the type of place where car insufficiencies show. It was a fast, flat out bends not one of those tricky places where there is braking, specific entry to follow, specific liens to follow, and getting back on the throttle.
      - Cars today (for some time now) are very different from the cars back then. Today's cars have stepped floors (and a small horizontal bulge in the middle which can constrict and therefore accelerate the airlfow), numerous complex aero elements (even the front wing is not one piece anymore), all working together in unison and creating a complex system of vortices, where some of those vortices seal off the sides of the car, crating a ground effect. The air is scooped differently under the nose and the floor is a lot more important in generating downforce. Early 90s cars had flat floors and air was scooped entirely over the small horizontal plane of the floor protruding under the cockpit. The cars bottomed all the time, even when they had active suspension. The cars were running very low, while today's cars are often more raised in the rear than necessary. Note the ground effects cars of the late 70s/early 80s were also much higher. Also the FW16 had a blown diffuser
      - If anything, an alleged slide at the speed at Tamburello would have been more visible and more violent.
      So it is the modification to the steering column (with undisputed fatigue cracking after only 1 fast lap of racing) that turned out to be the fatal flow. Otherwise the car was getting better already at Imola, despite the design deficiencies it had.

      @@VWaudiRULEs From every source I have seen up to this day, NONE said he was happy. I have even heard some interviews of him to brazilian radios and certainly happy was not something you could acknowledge from them.
      I bet your source must have misinterpreted whilst he was indeed very confident for the race saying he was happy about the car.

    • @hristoitchov
      @hristoitchov 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@danieldbdb Actually Senna said during the Warm Up that he was happy with the car and told his mechanics not to touch it anymore. It wasn't perfect yet (that wouldn't happen until Newey introduced the modified rear a couple of races later), but it was better than at the previous 2 GPs.
      In any case, the car's instability was irrelevant in the circumstances surrounding the accident at Tamburello. He was cornering, then suddenly he wasn't. There was no oversteer, no correction, just the car going straight on. Senna decided to brake as much as possible. He would have never done that if he could steer left and avoid impact. It was a very shallow corner, easily flat out with minimum amount of steering and low lateral g-force. It didn't require any skill at all.
      As the person commenting above said, if there was an actual oversteer at such high speed, it would have been very violent and obvious. You can see that in numerous such incidents, particularly on ovals. If he lost it by overcorrection, the car would have shot right at a much greater angle, tyres sliding and smoking, and the impact would have been at a higher speed too.

    • @danieldbdb
      @danieldbdb 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@hristoitchov now we must not confuse things here. He was unhappy with the car overall that year. He knew it had crappy aerodinamics and a powerful engine. Newey later described in his book what problem that car had.
      Now, if you talk about that race specifically, yes he thought he would win and Michael also said he thought he would lose, because in their view San Marino was more favourable for the Renault engine.
      Senna was going for 1 stop and Michael for 2. He was very unlikely to be overtaken on the track due to the engine, so Michael's only shot to win the race was to overtake Ayrton on the start with the lighter car, which he almost did.
      Senna would probably unfurl that austrian flag he carried with himself on the car after the race, in honor of Roland Ratzenberger.

      barra de direção quebrou, segundo os testes do ex-diretor de competição da Ferrari, Mauro Forghieri, e do presidente da Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade de Bolonha, Enrico Lorenzini testes de laboratório com microscópio eletronico comprovou que a coluna de direção se quebrou antes da batida do carro contra o muro, e não depois. A polícia rodoviária e a Universidade de Bolonha colocaram algumas máquinas na pista de Imola, testes realizados com aparelhos ingleses, medições no local apontaram que a pista oferecia excelente aderência e não apresentava ondulação. Na camera colocada dentro do carro, a mão de Senna tenta uma correção de trajetória para a esquerda, mas as rodas permanecem retas, perfeitamente alinhadas. Existe diferença entre o rompimento do metal de forma instantânea e abrupta, e quando ele se rompe por fadiga de material (esforço repetitivo com aparecimento de estrias). A parte fraturada da coluna de direção do carro de Senna mostrou uma área com estrias de fadiga de 60%. A contra prova, foi feita no laboratório do Centro dell’Aeronautica Militare di Pratica di Mare, em Pornezia, próximo a Roma, o microscópio eletrônico apontou que 70% do setor ao redor do local de fratura apresentava estrias de fadiga. Senna não terminaria a corrida devido as avarias da barra de direção, que se romperia de qualquer modo, seu azar foi ela se romper no exato momento em que tangenciava a curva tamburello

    • @tayrone1065
      @tayrone1065 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Isso mesmo, @maconheiro de humanas. Apenas quanto ao local do rompimento da coluna de direção, não foi propriamente azar, porque a força aplicada sobre a peça é proporcional à velocidade do carro. Então, como aquele era o ponto de maior velocidade do circuito, o mais provável seria romper ali mesmo. Infelizmente.
