  • Heading into Big Bend National Park on my big motorcycle trip to all the national parks in the continental United States. Made my way through Marfa, Texas to Big Bend Ranch State Park where I set up camp for the night and it was an excellent spot for motorcycle camping!
Quite a day riding through wind across the great wide open plains of Texas, checking out an interesting and quirky town of Marfa, running from some rain and making it to one of my new favorite roads for a motorcycle Route 170 "The River Road" where I got to swim in the Rio Grande on the US Mexico border. Breathtaking views and a gorgeous sunset. This was my kind of day!
Hope you enjoy this video, thanks for watching!

Big respect for YOUR respect of "the rules" at Chianti. Your enthusiasm is contagious, and you're the kind of people I want to share my national and state parks with. To fully appreciate it and leave it at LEAST as good as you found it. Both the state and national parks at Big Bend are remarkable. And they're but a small sliver of what's been left us by TR and men like him. These places need to be preserved for the people that come after us. Great video, and I hope I can find your vlogs following this one.

FM170 probably the most epic scenic road in that area. Just got back from big bend, I go every year. This year was different because I took my f850gs with me and saw a lot of the back country. Was epic to say the least.

I lived in Texas for nearly 40 years before moving to Florida and never went to Big Bend National Park or Texas hill country area. Bare in mind it was nearly 500 miles from where I lived, and I did not have a motorcycle at that point in my life. That proves that we sometimes don't appreciate the outdoors that are closest to home. If you get a chance to actually watch television at some point, there is an interesting show on Turlingua and the murder that happened there. The show was called Badlands and was televised in 2015 or so. Anyhow, thanks for sharing Part 1.

I did Big Bend in 2017. My only regrets are that I should have spent 1 more day there and that I should have ridden my adventure bike. It was still great, though. Big Bend is unique in its ruggedness and its geopolitical
location. There are so many things one thinks about being right there on the border. The Santa Elena Canyon(in the national park) is just magnificent and you need to spend a day hiking it. Also, most people (me included) enter the national park from the west near the town of Presidio and go east from there. have a good time at La Kiva!!!

My dad and I trailered the hogs(HarleyD’s) down for the chili cook off in Terlingua. Best trip I’ve ever taken. Every year we go. And it is exactly that....A Trip... we stayed in a nice Airbnb called the Agave Terlingua and it was 250$ a night but had all the amenities. We road up into the chisos basin and hung out and had lunch. I highly suggest going. We saw javalina and bears and cubs and even an eagle according to one of the rangers.

Another excellent video, Tim. I have been down in Big Bend and surrounding area several times and I just can't get enough. I was last there in 2016 but I really need to get back. I really liked your comment about it being breathtaking. After leaving the east coast and being in the southwest for 29 years, I find that just about everything out here is breathtaking. THE SOUTHWEST IS THE BEST and I could NEVER live back east or anywhere else for that matter.

My wife and I camped at the State Park in Nov 2020. Absolutely beautiful but a lot tougher than the National Park. The roads are pretty rough and LONG. It takes about 2-3 hours to get from the main road to the Ranger Station and another 2-3 hours to get to our camp site. We had a GX460 on 33.5"s with a massive roof top tent and had a great time. The State Park is much more remote and you are pretty much completely isolated at many of the camp sites. Stayed at Guale 2 and Bofecillos. She doesnt like camping much but still talka bout that trip often. Highly recommend checking the State Park out too if you want to get away from it all. Just bring extra fuel and innertubes if youre on a bike.

SW Texas and Big Bend NP are great. I've gone down there every February since 2013. Even recognized the first morning drive through Van Horn. Dessert Inn there is a great place to stay. Peter (the owner) is great to bikers! MARFA is also known for the Marfa Lights.. need to be there at night of course. Weird stuff. The best ride (as Tim's buddy says in the vid) in the area is from Presidio to Terlingua. Got to be a top 10 ride in North America. Windy days common in SW Texas January through June. A word to the wise.. don't go to Big Bend from Mid May to Mid October.... HOT, by a new definition... a great place to see rattle snakes during those months though.

North of Marfa is Fort Davis. The Mc Donald Observatory and the highest paved road in Texas. If you go back to Marfa, it's north on 17, make a left on 166 then back to Fort Davis on 118. It's about a 70 mile loop. Heads up, there are some twisties. The Observatory is on the north side of 118. Go past the welcome center and follow the road to the right to the top. The highest paved road in Texas sign is up there. We ride it on bicycles, a charity ride called Fort Davis Cycle Fest. We camp at Prude Ranch.

It’s a wonderful area, I was there a month ago, as you experienced Spring time is always windy in that area. My buddy went with me and we went to Marathon, Alpine., Terlingua, Big Bend Park, and the State Park awesome roads for bikes and what a landscape! Tip if you pass through Marathon the White Buffalo Bar at the Gage Hotel has awesome Nachos and a great Margarita. You may also want to checkout the Gage Hotel interesting old place with history. P. S. In Terlingua the Starlight Theatre Restaurant is interesting but can have long waits for a table and service is slow, lots of bikes show up there. Get some BBQ at DB’s Rustic Iron a little roadside trailer joint. Pretty good BBQ if you don’t want sauce on the meat tell them ahead of time since they slap it on by default and lots of it.

That road from Presidio to Terlingua is awesome beautiful motorcycle ride. But wait till you see the Chisos Mtns. Take the ride up to the Basin to enjoy the cool pine scented mtn air and go to the resturant up there for the view of "the Window" and order the Chicken Fried Steak. Then take the Maxwell Scenic drive down to the River at Santa Elina Canyon. You can jump in the water again there. Btw the only good grocery store is on the east side of Study Butte for provisions. Park stores only have junk food mostly. Be careful with the 4WD offroads. Some of them are best ridden on lite weight enduros. Heavy adventure bikes will struggle with the deep sand in the washouts and the steep slopes covered in loose baby heads. Black Gap road nearly killed me last May when it was 108 degrees. You have a lot more to see and I wish I was there with ya. Spike out.

My first bike trip to Big Bend was in the 1st week of May in 2012 and it was 108°. That road from Presideo to Lajitas is amazing on a bike. The Woodlands, Texas

Terlingua's a trip. Can't wait to see your next episode. My KLR is in the garage leaking coolant right now but hopefully I'm off the cool mountains of northern Arizona soon.

Danny have a great trip there! It will be hot but you should have most of the park to yourself, hopefully! There are plenty of opportunities to take a swim and cool off, just be careful not to swim too far without your passport!

I thoroughly enjoyed this wonderful video. A novel I'd recommend is Carry Me, by Peter Behrens, in which the magic of the Llano Estacado is fully appreciated. A history book I'm just reading now is Empire of the Summer Moon, about the Comanches out that way. And a fun thing to do when you're on open plains watching thunderstorms on the horizon, is to pull up your weather radar app, locate the T-cell, then look at your GPS app and measure the distance. If a slice of sky is visible behind the falling rain, just at the horizon, you can then know exactly how far your horizon line is. And if you see the cloud tops of a well-defined T-cell beyond the horizon, you'll be amazed how far off that can be, well over a hundred miles. I've been through the Big Bend area years ago as a truck driver, and have always wanted to return. I hadn't heard of Marfa before, but what a cool little town.

That place looks beautiful. I can see by the smile on your face as you were talking you are so happy.😁 best part, you baptized yourself in the river. Mother Earth is awesome. Stay safe.🤙🏼

Nice video. I was just there last month and the Rio Grande was nearly dry. They must have had some storms since early April.
