I was born Crownheights and raised in ENY but left during the early 90's. It was always a rough neighborhood but it doesn't look as bad as it once did. The 70's were good, but the 80's things got fucked up. Believe it or not, NYPD had a hand in making that neighborhood even more dangerous than it was with them getting into the crack game. The 75th was the most disgusting and corrupt cops. Pitkin ave was mostly Ricans from Doscher st to Crescent ave. The projects were always mostly black. I use to play at the construction site that was Linden Plaza, climbed ropes all the way to the roof. Crazy shit but I loved it back then. Thanks for doing this and letting me look at my old hood. I grew up in the projects in the South Bronx and my cousins lived in these projects in East New York. Our parents kept our home spotless, all of us had love and our neighbors were like our family. Our elders were everything. The honor code of the streets is real. People had multiple jobs hustles putting food on the table. I live in Rome now married to a Sicilian/ Roman in a lovely apartment in Rome's city center. But seeing this makes me oddly homesick. People don't understand that as hard as the streets are, there's so much love and beauty. The projects made me, no matter what Universities I went to, no matter where I am in the world the people of these neighborhoods in NYC are forever the biggest part of me. I come from the country small town and it seems that we all have the same values of raise our people and get rid of the bad people I think we néed to take some country guys and some guys from hood and have them tak and show how they agree with values it could bring us together so much

So many thoughts as I watch this...I'm not sure how any of their drinking, smoking, standing around, blowharding about the community will actually HELP the community, but I'm also not a part of it. Grew up a block before the projects you could see the corner of my block in the video. My friends and I would play handball on the wall of the warehouse. Family worked hard to get out and thanks be to God now we live in Boca Raton. Such a different world from the 80s & 90s in East NY. Almost became a statistic very grateful, everyday. So many hard working families who work very hard and most don’t make it out.
Peter, God Bless you! I have been watching you for years and let me tell you this has to be one of my favorite videos. I had to watch it 3 times. Thank you for giving a voice to the projects and thank you for showing us the wisdom those men were able to give. Peter, thank you for this series. I never knew… I mean, in my 20’s , I had friends that lived in South Minneapolis and we thought that was almost like a ghetto. It’s refreshing to see some honest and truthful reporting/journalism. And these people look like great people …. Just wanted to hug those ladies that lost a family member…and the “ Aunty”. If younger people would just take the time to listen to these people. Like I tell the youngins in my family….I didn’t get this old by being stupid…did some stupid things, but NEVER did them twice. Peter, I have to commend you for this video. It shows life a lot of us don't see. I also commend all of the people who took the time to speak with you. Cashmere and all of the other guys were wonderful. They are just trying to keep their community together. I'm hoping that the kids listen to them especially the OG so that they follow the right path and don't get caught up in the crap. Thank you for this video, It was very interesting.

I live in Tennessee now but I grew up in boulevard projects. Its cool seeing how it is now. It was rough growing up there but i loved it. It was because of ppl like this who looked out for the young kids. Anytime there was a shooting they always ran us up the stairs or hid us. But I loved it because all of us looked out for each other . I would never talk bad about where I came from because it made me who I am
So many voices all at one time makes it really hard to follow but almost everyone of these men are clearly good men just looking out for their families and community. We need to see that side of the story represented more. Thank you

It's interesting to see the contrast between the different neighborhoods in various videos. I think it is amazing that Peter has an ability to adapt to any culture, empathize, and make them comfortable enough to embrace him.
At 9 minutes in that dude throws a beer bottle in the grass as he walks out of the PJs. That's not a way to live. Rolling a blunt in the middle of the street, not setting a good example. These dudes are not setting the example they need to.

The problem with the projects is that they were forced to loosen selectivity in the late 60s. It literally became a dump for the city's unwanted. If it starts being more selective (no druggies, at least one person in the family must have a job and kick people out involved with violence, etc), things can change.
Watching all of those people in that project elevator touching the walls gave me anxiety. 😂Been living in the projects for ten years and I never touch those elevator walls. Hearing them talking about not having fathers in the home is gold. Absolute GOLD. THANK YOU!!! Hearing all of the dumbasses trying to ignore these issues and make everything out to be about racism has been driving me mad. Tired of hearing these millionaires bitching and whining about racism while they ignore the fundamental issues in our communities which are things like young people becoming parents and children being raised without good role models. My mom, sister, and grandma were all teenage mothers who raised kids without their dads. Kids and especially boys NEED their fathers. I deadass almost cried hearing him say what he said about fathers not being around and that adults are the ones in charge. Thank you. THIS is the kind of stuff we need to be talking about.

I’m a country boy who doesn’t have a racist bone in his body and likes going into the city, but the dude throwing the bottle on the grass without even thinking about it is kind of what pi**es me off about the whole “look where we gotta live thing”. I always hear about how my people live in nice houses with nice properties in beautiful areas and how it’s unfair. Dude nobody made you live there, and nobody made you buy scratch offs instead of gas for your lawn mower, play videos games instead of painting your house, or get drunk in the middle of the day and throw bottles instead of cleaning up bottles and your neighborhood. It’s accountability. It’s that simple. My area looks beautiful because we work hard to maintain it… you gotta SWEAT. Period.

This is what alchololism looks like. Im not being judgemental, as I don't drink anymore because I've never drank like a gentleman in my life. I'm saying this to give you the language to understand what you're seeing and give it context. I read the comments and most people miss that the problem is alcholol and that these guys are right about lacking resources, they need access to high end rehabs where they can actually get quality programming, not prison or state run facilities.
The elder gentleman was insightful about not having any adults to show him how to live a decent life. He looked back on his life and realized if he would have taken a different path in life the outcome would have been vastly different. I liked how he pointed out that there are multiple paths to take in life and each produces a different outcome....whether positive or negative. Hopefully his wisdom may help a younger person learn from his mistakes.
Sadly most people don't learn by listening -- they learn by experiencing. Then they think they can try to prevent the same thing from happening to others by sharing their story, and I mean maybe it is true in some cases, but most people it's lost on them if their heart is set on doing that sort of thing to begin with. That and in poorer communities especially like it's hard to listen to the old man with nothing and look at the "honest folks" that take a bus to their job that pays them nothing at McDonalds and the only ones who have anything are out there living "that life". It's really sad but the lack of role models that are positive is definitely a huge issue for the black community.

I remember years ago when they were going to close down so many libraries. Rapper BK Cashmere gave a press conference and that library is still open until this day. I also remember on Father's Day he used to throw a big party at Von King Park and feed the whole crowd. When you watch Peter's videos you almost forget it's a "one man show"! Really good interviews and always good camera shots and always good sound. I know... that disgusted me... overall alcoholism is a main problem. Its legal and socially acceptable and in "the hood" its clearly seen as a status flex to drink from a Hennessy bottle and some other "brands". Tried to help him but realized even as a 45 year old man he preferred to hang out all day smoking weed and drinking, living out of roach motels and mooching off of females who had food stamps. I grew up in the projects in the South Bronx and my cousins lived in these projects in East New York. Our parents kept our home spotless, all of us had love and our neighbors were like our family. Our elders were everything. The honor code of the streets is real. People had multiple jobs hustles putting food on the table. I live in Rome now married to a Sicilian/ Roman in a lovely apartment in Rome's city center. But seeing this makes me oddly homesick. People don't understand that as hard as the streets are, there's so much love and beauty. The projects made me, no matter what Universities I went to, no matter where I am in the world the people of these neighborhoods in NYC are forever the biggest part of me. Family worked hard to get out and thanks be to God now we live in Boca Raton. Such a different world from the 80s & 90s in East NY. Almost became a statistic very grateful,
everyday. So many hard working families who work very hard and most don’t make it out.

I live in Tennessee now but I grew up in boulevard projects. Its cool seeing how it is now. It was rough growing up there but i loved it. It was because of ppl like this who looked out for the young kids. Anytime there was a shooting they always ran us up the stairs or hid us. But I loved it because all of us looked out for each other . I would never talk bad about where I came from because it made me who I am

I moved out of ENY 27 years ago and I never looked back. That place was the absolute definition of a war zone.
The problem with the projects is that they were forced to loosen selectivity in the late 60s. It literally became a dump for the city's unwanted. If it starts being more selective (no druggies, at least one person in the family must have a job and kick people out involved with violence, etc), things can change.
Watching all of those people in that project elevator touching the walls gave me anxiety. 😂Been living in the projects for ten years and I never touch those elevator walls.

Hearing all of the dumbasses trying to ignore these issues and make everything out to be about racism has been driving me mad. Tired of hearing these millionaires bitching and whining about racism while they ignore the fundamental issues in our communities which are things like young people becoming parents and children being raised without good role models. My mom, sister, and grandma were all teenage mothers who raised kids without their dads. Kids and especially boys NEED their fathers. I always hear about how my people live in nice houses with nice properties in beautiful areas and how it’s unfair. Dude nobody made you live there, and nobody made you buy scratch offs instead of gas for your lawn mower, play videos games instead of painting your house, or get drunk in the middle of the day and throw bottles instead of cleaning up bottles and your neighborhood. The elder gentleman was insightful about not having any adults to show him how to live a decent life. He looked back on his life and realized if he would have taken a different path in life the outcome would have been vastly different. I liked how he pointed out that there are multiple paths to take in life and each produces a different outcome....whether positive or negative. Hopefully his wisdom may help a younger person learn from his mistakes.

Sadly most people don't learn by listening -- they learn by experiencing. Then they think they can try to prevent the same thing from happening to others by sharing their story, and I mean maybe it is true in some cases, but most people it's lost on them if their heart is set on doing that sort of thing to begin with. That and in poorer communities especially like it's hard to listen to the old man with nothing and look at the "honest folks" that take a bus to their job that pays them nothing at McDonalds and the only ones who have anything are out there living "that life". It's really sad but the lack of role models that are positive is definitely a huge issue for the black community.

Drunks outside, youth is rude and misguided a lot of the time, prostitution, narcissism, violence , abuse, cheaters, rapist, addictions are all a product of ENY. However you do have the underlying loyalty and protection the musicians and hustlers savvy strong entrepreneurs it’s a 50/50 place it depends on what YOU want and ofc who you surround yourself with

Yeah it is sad. I met a guy like this on a temp job in NC. He was from Brooklyn- the projects. Tried to help him but realized even as a 45 year old man he preferred to hang out all day smoking weed and drinking, living out of roach motels and mooching off of females who had food stamps. Listening to his thought processes was just sad, and he's someone's father...
