my first kinda wake up call to learn this was i was working at praties (Tasmanian baked potato fast food sorta place) and a deaf customer came in, i was serving him and as i didn't/ don't know auslan the only was i was able to take his order was to get him to point to the menu (one of the menus on a piece of paper obviously) it worked but it made me feel like i was letting my fellow aussies down by not knowing it

Please do more Auslan videos Abbey, you're an awesome teacher. I have been trying to learn Auslan through youtube and yours is the first which gives some hints around the "viewer" perspective of signing (ie: turn your hand this way so they can see what you're doing). Thanks for making it a bit easier.

And I wanted to learn ASL so I'd be able to talk to them, also I want to do nursing so just in case. I wanted to learn stuff in advance😄 this was super helpful thankyou!!!💖

Hopefully a course coordinator raised it with you but in your first year try and make this one of your electives. We don't get many choices in health sciences but this is one I was annoyed wasn't offered at my campus. It is useful and we do need to know it if we want to treat everyone with the same respect.

I have been taught using the opposite hands, (by a friend in school back in the day) is that a problem? Eg for vowels I use my right pointer finger to my left hand etc etc. Also in general does it matter if you change hands (like if you are a leftie?)

    • @perrinturner2582

I've been wanting to learn sign for a while now as my son's best friends parents are deaf and 2 beautiful ladies at our local Coles across from the school are deaf too, I think it should be mandatory in schools to at least have charts up with basic signs of alphabet and to learn basics so they can communicate. Making it my goal to learn as much as I can so I can hopefully make that change at our school :) thanks for the video girls, also why does it change in different states and is it by alot or just a little bit?
