Those God awful generic intro tracks... as a musician familiar with the production process of audio and a bit with video, It's crazy to hear how many bigger TH-cam channels have such great visual editing, Yet the audio sems to be slapped onto it with no mixing whatsoever - mixing being edits to the sounds to add effects, blending speech and background music properly, making sure audio levels are leveled, the highs & lows, etc etc. You'd think they'd make enough money to afford an editor that doesn't just focus on the visual part of the videis, ala
Great overall tutorial; not just for the use of the marker techniques, but also for the actual form and sketch process. I loved your explanation of how and why you add the ink lining as you do as it helps bring the entire subject to life on the page. Great job!
I personally think it turn out for the best. Picturing it without the cross contour shadowing, feels as the overall picture would be missing a certain detail, witch I would’ve found difficult to express creativity. Great work 🎉@@thevirtualinstructor
Loved the way you not only explain the tool but also demonstrate how to use it in a skillful way, not just focusing on creating floral strokes but actually using the brush markers as watercolours. Subscribed! Will try recreating this image, the shell looks beautiful
I said “nice save!” at the end! I think one of the most valuable things you teach is how to correct when, inevitably, something doesn’t go the way we plan.
Thank you for the lesson! It was very fascinating! I bought my first watercolor markers several months ago, and I'm still learning how to draw with them. I noticed that most of artists I've seen use these markers like just traditional watercolors mostly. They are using a brush to apply colors and mix them on a palette. But for this way, it's easier and cheaper to use traditional watercolors, I think :) And I'm trying to find some unique techniques for these markers. They allow us to achieve some interesting effects, something between alcohol markers (dense "cartoon" fill) and traditional watercolors. I think this is the main feature of watercolor markers, but maybe I am wrong. Anyway we have a lot ways how to use them :)
That was gorgeous. Thanks for offering up this video. When I saw you get the blue and purple my brain thought ‘What?’, but of course it works, and it is what we really see. I find your voice very soothing and perfect for instructional videos.
The way I remember hot and cold press paper is, think of hot press as pressed with a hot iron. Cold press is like clothes left in the dryer that come out wrinkled.
Just today I bought the Faber castell Albrecht durer watercolor markers. In using them tonight I let some of the applied markers dry completely to test a theory. And I was correct, these markers wet and dissolve much better than the winsor and newton. They don't leave lines on good watercolor paper. Just sharing for anyone who is looking to purchase.
The video I needed 🤩🤩🤩 Wow, those markers are heaven to me. I was thinking about watercolor markers and this video Just appeared, perfect. Loved the linework, the shadow an colors... Please make another video like this.
I’ve had a big box of watercolor markers sitting in my supplies box for a year and have been too nervous to use them! I only just started learning to paint and am eager to try them, and this video is so helpful. I feel a lot more comfortable and better prepared for using them. Thank you so much for the help!
You really described, perfectly, my anxiety to start/ try new things… to not waste great materials without getting the results I expect. This is the biggest break against my creativity :(((( I need a PUSH

Great demo. Thanks so much! I love how you figured out how to transition your shadows into the line enhanced shadows. That really tied it all together. Super!
I wanted to thank you. I was interested in watercolor markers and found your video. I decided against the markers and got a watercolor pan instead. You're an excellent teacher, and thank you for your emphasis on restraint, especially when it comes to linework and implied lines made an instant difference in the quality of my artwork. Yeah I'm confused as to why one would use watercolor markers over traditional water color pans, seems like an expensive way to accomplish the same thing
Helped so much!! I'm in DL and in a new more advanced art class and i got water colored markers for Christmas but haven't been able to figure out a good technique for what i have to draw!! This helped so much because I'm very busy and i don't have much time to figure out a good technique myself!
Thank you for the great tutorial!!! I’m questioning the need of those markers, if you still need to apply it on some surface and then use the other brush to paint. I mean, what’s the difference between using regular watercolor tubes of paint? 🤔 Is it useful just to add those sharp lines on illustration?
Thank you!!! Few questions: when drawing contours, did you wait for layers to dry? How to act if I have to draw details on other colours, like for instance a coloured little boats on the sea? I would like to draw a maritime scene (like a little harbour and few boats and houses) and I'm struggling to be defined. Thank you!

I have been using them for like 6 months now like NORMAL markers and never noticed that they are watercolour ones though it was Obviously written on each marker Today I noticed it And BOOM lost my brain cells😭😂 I mean- This video is gonna help alot thank you
What type of paper are these Ecoline pens made for? I have tried them on every watercolor paper I own (100% cotton CP, HP, XL Canson, etc.). All the markers do is stain the paper and will not move no matter how quickly I applied water. I thought maybe it is the markers. I purchased Zig watercolor markers, Winsor & Newton, and now Ecoline. At this point, I am very frustrated with the whole marker idea. I would appreciate your help in understanding how to use watercolor markers.
Hi, I am new to watercolor painting and trying to decide if the best technique for me is traditional watercolor, watercolour pencils or watercolor markers. Which do you think is easier to learn for a beginner? Thanks.
I want to ask something I have this watercolor pen from miniso, and im confused can i dip them in water then use them? Or should i use them like normal markers?
Nice video BUT you really didn’t use the watercolor markers, you really only used them for the container that held the watercolors! You didn’t actually use the watercolor markers as the tool they were fabricated for. What would’ve been the difference if you used liquid or tubed or caked watercolors on your glass palette? Maybe another video of using the markers directly to the paper would be helpful?
This was nice to watch but I cannot shake the feeling that a better idea for the proposed technique would have been to use normal watercolors and some regular markers to add a bit of details. Having watercolor markers seemed redundant. Btw, I think that you can water the tip a bit before applying the marker, this way you get a bit more time before you have to activate it.
You can actually use them like watercolours on glass / plate etc?! My mind is blown. - - - - - - This is a little random to ask, but could someone tell me what his accent is, I'm really entranced by the way he says 'drawing'.
I was thinking the same thing! I think the answer would be that with the watercolor markers, you don't have to mix paint to get the color you want. But it does seem a bit odd to use the watercolor markers like watercolor paints on a pallet
I wonder, whats the point of using watercolour markers? Since you dont benefit from the brush or bullet tip at all. You apply the colours like you would use liquid or pan watercolour. It feels more like a "How to use watercolour" and not super specific for watercolour markers ... I know you show how to apply the markers before on some plastic but.. thats really it when it comes to marker techniques.
Well, what can I say? This video is about using watercolor markers - not markers. This is how watercolor markers are used, markers (like alcohol-based markers) behave in a different way.
...I'm not saying that you aren't skilled, or that you don't know your subject matter...because you clearly do...but I feel like your advice overall for using watercolour markers was "use the colour from them, and then a brush, rather than bother with using them as markers".
Once again, I'm convinced that water color markers offer no unique value and are fraught with limitations. Is there any unique value that I am missing here? At this point I think it's just a marketing gimmick.
Frankly, I don't find these watercolour markers interesting! What is the need for the markers if it is not used to directly apply the colours on the paper? In the video, the colour are first applied on the pallet and from there it is taken on a brush and applied on the paper? What benefit does these markers have when compared to the water colours in tubes? If we are applying the colour using brushes, then it is better to use water colours from the tubes! 🤔
As I touch on in the video, I see your point and tend to agree with you. My goal as an instructor is to introduce as many products that are available to artist as I can and highlight the pro's and con's of each. I think a great aspect of using watercolor markers is their portability. Thanks for your comment!
@@thevirtualinstructor You have a point there! If you are going for a plein air painting, it would be easy to carry these markers and a couple of brushes and a little water with you instead of carry many tubes of paints. Yes, that way it could be useful. But thanks for you video. As for your videos, I am a great admirer of them! You have taken great pains to pass on so much knowledge about art to viewers like me. I had recently bought a set of watercolour brush pens. But I couldn't use it usefully. I found it unsuitable for any usually type of water colour paintings! Hence, my remarks on water colour markers! Thank you for the choice of gentle, soft music on a very low volume. Many youtubers choose horrible loud noise as their background "music".
