I remember that after the playoff win with Pittsburgh he said that "My team mates make me look better than I really am". No wonder that they loved him.

Some said there was no way he could fail, some said there was no way he could succeed.
Tebow found a way to simultaneously fail and succeed in the NFL, and in a weird way proved everyone wrong and right at the same time.

He threw for 10,000 yards and dominated in the SEC for 3 years. He won games wherever he played. He never got hurt. He could run. He could deliver and take hits. He may not have had the greatest or most powerful arm, but he was a winner.
Thats why I almost fell out of my chair about the Mel Kiper quote on him lacking the "intangibles" to succeed in the Pro's, this guy had more intangibles than I have ever seen from any athlete!
I agree. He's a Legend college QB with unlimited tangibles. But as a NFL QB, he was setup for failure. He has horrible passing mechanics which lead to bad passing completion. He couldn't read an nfl advance defense. NFL QB have 2.5 seconds to throw an accurate pass. His college game would not translate to the NFL. Amazing human being and college QB. Couldn't hack it in the NFL.
His last year at Florida he was knocked out cold by Kentucky 😂

Hands down, the best crying QB the SEC has ever seen.
His mechanics, accuracy, and decision making in a pro offense were awful and he was never going to translate to the NFL. But honestly he was a fantastic athlete, spirited, and didn't give up. And he had a flare for the dramatic. It is hard not to root for him. In the end he had his moments but that was all he was ever going to have. I thought his baseball run was a joke, but there too he actually did far better than there was any reason to think he could have.

@@jfry7145 We will have to agree to disagree. Anyone who can pick up baseball after playing in high school 12 years ago and be a serviceable triple A player a couple of years later has an enormous amount of athletic ability.
But he couldn’t put on football pads and play tight end, if he was that good a football player it should have been easy.

As a lifelong broncos fan, I gotta say that Tebow’s season was one of the most memorable and exciting seasons I can remember. And that playoff win was epic. Say what you want, he made it interesting.

As a Broncos fan, maybe you can explain to me what happened. I'm a life long Bearsss fan. It took awhile, but Orton developed into an average (great for a Bearsss) QB when we traded him to you for Cutler. He seemed to put up decent stats with you guys (Great for a Bearssss QB) but got benched for Tebow. Then you guys started winning.
If Tebow is so bad, why were you winning after benching Orton? Orton wasn't really that bad, was he? Was that just a weird lucky fluke?
I remember you guys coming into Chicago and the Bearssss Defense were laughing and making jokes about how bad Tebow was. And we shut you guys down for most of the game but Tebow lead Broncos down the field for the win at the end of the game. So much for all that talk.
You even won a playoff game.
How can Tebow be so bad and yet....not? Was it just the Gimmick offense that worked for a little bit? Would/should they have been better sticking with Orton?!?!?!
@@cheeseburger12 As An NFL QB he was not good. Orton had a better overall career, Denver just wasn't the place for him. If the Patriots couldn't do anything with Tebow then you knew he wasn't worth looking at as a QB (maybe a running back with throwing potential). He was able to make some big plays when needed but it was never really expected until late in games and you never knew when it would happen.
As far as Orton, just look at Cassel and Garoppolo after they left New England. They were never Great QB's but in New England they improved and excelled helping the team. Only to fail in another city and under another system.
College is a different game and you expect the QB to be able to run, however the NFL catches on quickly and defenses learn how to play against certain QB's that like to run or get flustered.

Orton also had 2 seasons with a pass over 80 yds Tebow did not (per Nfl Stats).
Tebow may have been better for Denver at that specific time with what they had over Orton, but Orton was the better QB overall.
There is one missing element that seperated him from college and Nfl. It was the throwing motion. When he was in college his throwing motion was the long wined up but it was accruate. When he went to the nfl everybody was telling him to change it

Yes - but between the two who would you choose?
Tebow was 9 of 10 in games where opponents scored less than 33 points, took the worst team in football to the divisional round while producing a 6 game winning streak on the way. Cutler in Denver once in 37 starts had a 3 game winning streak and took over a team that had gone 13/3 and produced 2/3, 7/9, 8/8.
All coaches that worked with Tebow as a starter got promoted and since all failed. Every HC/OC that has worked with Cutler has been fired except Adam Gase.

They lost 3 of 4 to back into the playoffs and the game after the Pittsburgh win, he got waxed 45-10 while barely breaking 150 yards passing. Tebow sucked as a NFL qb.

Tebow has a lot of racists hating him and a lot that hate him for being a Jesus freak but as a QB for the Broncos we have never had a young QB ever do what Tebow did in his first 16 games - and that includes John Elway.

The most interesting fact is that, in the following year, Peyton Manning took the same Denver Broncos just as far in the playoffs as Tim Tebow did.

As I remember they also beefed up the offensive line to protect Manning.
Peyton Manning made them a top 10 offense and greatly improved their passing numbers. They did lose in the playoffs that year but they also didn't get blown out like Tebow's Broncos did either. They also took the team that would go on to win that year's championship to OT. He also made them a much more efficient offense converting an additional 15% of their 3rd down conversion with them.
You're deluding yourself if you think the Broncos were the same level of team both years simply because they lost in the same divisional round.

I watched every Broncos game that Tebow started and I'm not A Broncos fan, everyone just wanted to see that 4th quarter comeback... and it kept happening again and again, it was honestly a very fun time at the bars and casinos! Go Tebow!!!

Watching Tebow play for the gators was some of the best years of football I’ve seen. He did wonders in Florida, and I love him for that. He’s also an amazing guy off the field. GO GATORS!

The best time I ever had watching college football. It would be 3rd and 8 and everyone in the stadium knew Tebow was getting the ball....and still could not stop him.
As a lifelong Tennessean, yeah, except for that one game every year, he was a great one. It was like a 1960s QB showed up to punish would be tacklers. LOL. Hope the young man is doing well and still doing the Lord's work.
What this really highlights for me is the massive difference between college and the NFL. You can go from being the best to the worst.

Agreed, if he would have changed positions upon immediately entering the league he might have had a chance to find a fulltime job in the league. Belichick even wanted to give him that chance as a multi positional chess piece for the Patriots offense but story has it Tim was stubborn and would only play QB.
Facts! The dude would have been very good playing alongside Gronk on the Pats but Tebow didn't want to change his position. Edelman changed from QB to a receiver and he got three titles out of it.

He could have been coached during college and been fine. He was so good at running that they didn't bother messing with his game to fix his deficiencies, so he never improved his form, style, or reads.
Amazing how Tim went from one of the greatest college players to one of the worst NFL players of all-time. But he did make to the NFL level and had a little string of success, something all of us arm-chair experts can only dream of.

@@ArthurShedsJackson He was working with the second worst team in the NFL that couldn't win without him until they finally hired Peyton Manning, who happens to be Peyton Manning. His qb coach that year was Adam Gase, who was a quarterback killer in the league. Don't get me started on his long list of quarterbacks he ruined. After that one season, Tebow never was given a real chance. He signed with the Jets who are stupid when it comes to quarterbacks. That's not a failure of improvement. That was how bad the Jets and Broncos are at developing quarterbacks. He barely missed signing with the Patriots because they already had a good backup quarterback that year. Similar situation happened in Philadelphia who had a lot of options that seemed good that year at quarterback. So where was he supposed to show signs of growth? The man got screwed from day one.
As for other NFL players who were worse than Tebow, let's just go with some of the quarterbacks since I don't have time to mention everybody. Akili Smith, Jimmy Clausen, Tim Couch, David Carr, Johnny Manziel, Sam Darnold (Another Gase-appointment), Brock Osweiler (Another Gase-appointment), Kyle Boller, Joey Harrington, Tim Rattay, Ryan Leaf, and KYLE ORTON.
It's really crazy how the best QBs in college don't necessarily become successful in the NFL. For example, I grew up with troy smith. I loved him in college, but he didn't have success in the NFL. The Heisman means nothing once you're in the NFL.
Tim Tebow may not have been the best QB in the NFL, but what he brought to the Denver Broncos that 1 miraculous season will
always be inspiring and unforgettable to me. I remember the sports critics gave him no chance against the Steelers in that Wild Card game.
Glad he to see him make there jaws drop in silence. What a year that was.
It just shows you may not always have to be the best player at your position, but with the right teamwork and what you bring as
a person yourself with leadership nothing is improbable.
Kyle Orton went 1-4 with the same team/defense...Tebow went 7-4 and won a playoff game...people forget this and are still hating on the guy over a decade later!!!

Let be clear here --- he played 4 years of high school football at QB, no one changed his throwing motion. He is a D1 QB at Florida with big time coaches , no changes to his throwing motion. He is drafted into the NFL and no one adjust his throwing motion. He is an athlete. So, he is either not coachable or coaches had little interest in working with him.
Or maybe he tried but just couldn't change that throwing motion and it was what it was.
There was no try. They didnt even get that far, because the problem never was his ability to play, the biggest issue that ruined tims career was the kneel downs and praying in football games. It became a controversey for some reason because fans thought that it was stupid, that they didnt want to see it, and they thought it was tim trying to force religion down their throats.
@@patrickleblanc613 I've seen clips of Tebow over years training and attempting to speed up his throwing motion. A habit like that is hard to break. When it takes almost a whole second to throw and release the ball it gives the defenders an extra step towards the target to deflect or intercept the ball. That's why his career completion percentage was below 50%. He played Johnny Manziel style which won him many games initially but it wasn't hard for NFL defenses to catch on. That pass to beat Pittsburgh in OT was amazing. Unfortunately for him, he had to go up against a Bill Belichick defense the next week. He was exposed and ultimately his ability to play the QB position at the pro level WAS the issue.

I remember his success in Florida, and like many college standouts (Leinert, Karpernick, Bush, etc.)- he had a short career. He did: however; ride a winning wave at Denver until he was replaced by Manning. Some said he should have gone to Jacksonville. Since then, his career went downward. One thing I do respect is his heart and attitude. He never complained esp. when his career was in its dark times.

What people never mention is that in a high school game Tebow:
-threw a td,
-run for a td,
-caught a td pass,
-kicked an extra point and field goal,
-played defense the entire game,
-kicked off and punted,
-sang the national anthem
-baptized a baby during the coin toss,
-ran up in the stands at halftime to deliver a baby, and
-gave a blind girl back her sight by touching her eyes during the post-game interview.
Then he drove the team back to their high school on the school bus...

Yes, he absolutely delivered that baby, brought back Jesus, delivered us from Saban, brought world peace, and lit the Beacons of Minas Tirith to call aid to Gondor.
I remember one game during his rookie year; they were down at the goal line and the coach called a running play - Tebow called time out, walked over to the sideline and yelled at the coach that "only one player runs the ball down there" (meaning himself).
I don’t know if that’s a good thing tbh.
Tebow exploited "prevent defenses" that NFL teams use late in games to protect leads. These defenses allow QBs to throw underneath coverage for short gains while defending against long passes. Tebow could complete these high-percentage passes and run for big gains late in games against this defense, which explains all his come from behind wins.
Against New England, Belichek had figured him out and tightened pass coverage against Tebow to make him throw with accuracy (which he can't do) and assigned an LB on him at all times to prevent him from running. As a result, New England won 45-10, and Tebow was carted off the field in the second half.
The following season, the entire league had him figured out and put intense pressure on him in the pocket, took away short passes, and made him throw down the field, because they knew he had no accuracy. and his completion percentage got even lower.
Tebow could never become an NFL QB because he couldn't throw the deep out route, which is a necessity because it's the one that converts 3rd and long and moves the chains. If you can't throw it, you can't play QB in the NFL.
Very underrated comment so let me thank you. At that time, I really wanted more of his fairy tale (there are many poor QBs, but at least he had personality), but now I see you are 100% right.
I was at that Steelers playoff game (only Bronco game I've been to) - nothing beats expecting to lose badly and then getting a close win. One of my favorite memories.
Wild game. Steelers should have lost in regulation if not for a blown call. Tebow such a bad passer that they run on 1st down nearly or possibly every single play for the whole game. 1st snap he gets in overtime, perfectly placed over the shoulder, game.

Actually, Denver's home field advantage in all of sports is probably at the top. For decades the Nuggets used it, until the franchise tanked. Teams fell apart in the 4th from the altitude. Elway had a bunch of comebacks at home too.

Instead of firing 1-2 (set- throw) He was 1-2-3 (set- bring it - down - throw).

my brother played ball with him in high school and even has that state champ ring. We went to every game and Tebow's PA was one of the people who helped out my Pop Warner team when i was coming up. She said he cries after every loss and works harder than anyone shes ever met. I really wanted it to work out for him but even in high school people were saying he would be better at TE or FB. I was there for that game he played with the broken bone and it was amazing.
I'll never forget watching Urban Myer and Chris Leak come to the game and holding up a sign after saying "Gator nation wants you". I talked to Chris Leak for a bit and he was a really nice guy.

The one great attribute he had as a quarterback was his leadership abilities. That helped him offset his physical limitations.

I’m convinced Tebow like many QBs were just ahead of the times. If he came out of college now teams would change their entire offense to fit him. 10years ago they were still against the idea of the mobile QB taking over and catering offenses to match it

@@sturdevantphotography5726 Taysom Hill legit has a role on the Saints. There are offenses that work. Any coach that says they can’t use a hybrid player etheir just doesn’t want to or is making a statement.
Tebow took over QB for a 1-3 team in his FIRST year starting, led them to the playoffs, won a play-off victory -- then was promptly traded to a coach who REFUSED to let him play (rex ryan) despite that team having a shitty record.
Many in the NFL actively worked against this guy. Who knows, maybe his throwing could have improved a little, certainly his reads, progressions, game management should have.
That’s how it always seemed to me. The NFL went out of its way to keep this guy from having a chance at succeeding.

i would have wanted to sub him in as qb for short 3rd downs. He would get 4 yards half the time with a busted play. His willpower and leadership was great. Ive never seen a D play as hard for a qb as the broncos did. They were believers and he showed them he might suck at throwing but hes not quitting and will try as hard as humanly possible
To me this reeks of any coach unable to fix his mechanics. Being an AFC West fan, I know all about Tebow, and that one season where it seemed he came back in every game, It was amazing. It seemed like the league all got a phone call saying he's not any good. How can you have this kind of success without being a winner? And that's what Tebow is, a winner.

He didn’t find a way to win. His defense won games for them. He edged out really bad teams, scoring very little points
During the regular season he only beat one team with a winning record one time, and those wins were by an average of 3.5 points. He simply was not good.

I watched Tim Tebow play a lot of games. I wasn't a fan of his or any team that he played for. What I saw were the times the coach allowed Tim to do his thing and make the plays was when Tebow Time would spark up. Tebow Time was the fans acknowledging that when Tebow was given the reigns, he had the ability to make plays with either running or throwing to a WR doing a route Tim knew well. I think the problem with Tim could have been his leadership position wasn't there enough to force the coaches to design a better NFL team to his abilities.

You have to be careful with narratives like this because you're making it sound like the only thing that kept Tebow from becoming a legend in the NFL were his coaches not letting him play Tebow Time ball all the time.
The truth is that Denver defense was playing lights out and keeping them in games and Tebow Time wasn't consistent at getting comeback wins like you make it sound. They limped into the playoffs because teams were starting figure out Tebow was a one trick pony and starting to adjust accordingly and the Denver defense was getting tired from having to play extended minutes because the Denver offense couldn't move the ball.
The main reason they beat the Steelers was because Demaryius Thomas decided he was going to be Usain Bolt for a game and just outrun defenders for 50 yards per catch. I also think the Steelers defense was a little banged up but either way once they ran into a legitimate title contender Tebow got decimated.
I think the coaching staff knew that Tebow style ball might get the team .500 wins, if that, given their defense and the talent around Tebow but they knew they had a championship caliber team and Tebow wasn't the one going to make that happen cause teams were already figuring out how to stop him. And with Tebow taking so much punishment that his shelf life was probably a few seasons at best.
Honestly I think we saw the best of what Tebow had to offer and it was all going to be down hill from there if they kept him.

As a Bears fan (and hence someone not entirely unfamiliar with the concept of erratic/unskilled QB play), I remember a lot of us joking at the time that Tebow brought all of the intangibles to the table, but nothing tangible; and Jay Cutler was exactly the opposite, combining occasionally great skills with a constantly iffy who-gives-a-sh*t attitude. And they had similar postseason success if you looked at the W-L record. But it might be more fair to call him the anti-Brady: zero skill reading a defense, and only able to complete passes either in the flat (or a jump pass over the line), or at 30+ yards. Nothing in between worked. I mean, he threw a really pretty deep spiral that gave the WR time to actually get under the thing before it arrived. But if you can't regularly connect on 10-15 yard passes, you're not going to make it as an NFL QB. But as an athlete, and a decent human being? Good guy.
With that said, my lasting Tebow memory will be that late-season game against the Jets, where he was trucking his way to the end zone with only Revis in the way - and Revis SOMEHOW got turned around and missed him entirely. Yeah. The guy's not exactly Barry Sanders in the open field, Darrelle. You just saw that T-Train steamroller coming and ducked.

If you notice in college fb theres no huddles and the Qb gets the plays/ pre-snap reads from the sidelines and the Qb is never under center always in shotgun. @yossarian I've always believed that Tebow had potential, and was the victim of circumstances as a pro. Consider - In two seasons in Denver, he played for three head coaches, and two different offensive coordinators, and two quarterback coaches. Add to that the horrible labor issue in 2011 which prevented him from any offseason work or study. The lockout from March to July of that year stopped any work with the team he might have been able to completed. Then, just to drive the final nail in the crate for him, when Denver acquired Peyton Manning in 2012 I had hopes that a then-24 year old Tebow could learn and study under Manning, and come out with much better skills, particularly in reading defenses and improving his passing accuracy. Sadly for him this was not to be the case.
Wasted a 1st round pick. Biggest flop in Denver history.

Tebow was exciting and full of heart, if he had been a fullback or tight end with backup running QB ability his story would be so different. Hands down THE best college football QB to play and I was happy to support him during his stints, hard to root against such a genuinely good person.

He is a 1-2 read QB, and it works for him because he is such a threat on the ground. If his primary and secondary receiver are both covered, he doesn't continue through his receiving options, instead he starts looking for a running lane. If that is covered, he looks for the unconventional... like a wr breaking off his route, or a halfback just over scrimmage. He played like I play Madden. I would use Mike Vick, or Vince Young, Pick the 2 routes I like best on a pass play, and if they both get stuffed, I scramble. Sometimes, receivers get open, and it makes for a wild play. I dont like having to keep an eye on the pocket collapsing. Thats how QB's suffer concussions. 2 Reads and scramble.

This was a great lesson on how difficult a job is that of NFL quarterback. Many are called, but (very) few are chosen.
Nobody has mentioned that the pro coaches totally changed his throwing motion. In college, he had a long windup. In the pros, they had him trying to release much quicker. While that's certainly important for obvious reasons, it was still a factor in his accuracy.

At 8:12, you state he was the least accurate QB in league history with 10 or more starts in a season with a 46 percent completion rate, making him the first QB with under a 50 percent completion rate in a season with that many starts. Doug Williams had a 41.8% completion rate in 1979, starting all 16 games with Tampa Bay, and he started 10 games the previous season with a 37.6% completion rate, so certainly not the first QB to do that or the worst all time.

That was true, but I was referring to the season where they were competing for a position. You play the player who is currently the best option. Sanchez was completely ruined by his offensive coordinator who wanted to shape him rather than continue what was successful in his first two season. It is as much of a shame what happened to Sanchez as it was to Tebow. Typical Jets though.
