    At a ATD (distributor that sells tires to most of the tire shops you know of) seminar I was told that the sizing is based on a tire casing that is inflated all the way to capacity with no load deflecting it

  • @Silvrwind1

    Just an FYI the advantage your getting when you air down off road isn't from the width of the tire ( yes it does get slightly wider depending on your side wall strength). The bigger advantage is your tire length (contact patch) is getting longer to grab the trail, rocks, whatever you going over. Agree though with the OP; have run both Nitto Trail Grapplers and KM3's both 37" with the grapplers being just under a true 37 @ 28 psi and the KM3 at 36.5 @ the same psi.

    Measure HORIZONALLY. Not vertically from the ground because the tire pressure will determine the "overall diameter". That testing method won't be correct.

      No, if the tire is filled to the correct psi then it doesn't matter if you measure vertically or horizontally , if your tire is under inflated then measuring horizontally will give you a bigger measurement and vice versa

    I always measure my tire height by rolling circumference instead of mount height or ground to hub X2... (Diameter = circumference / 3.14). It's definitely more accurate and many handheld tire programmer manufacturers suggest this approach.

    The 10 1/2 inch wide is not the tread with it is the width of the tire to the side wall bulges and you should’ve measured the tire from 3 o’clock to 9 o’clock because the weight of the jeep is making it squat yeah I would still be short of 35 inches but it would be a little closer

    Can anyone confirm the actual height and width of the 33x10.5 version ?

  • @vpmotors9529
    @vpmotors9529 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The width of the tire is measured from sidewall to sidewall at the correct air presure recommended by the manfacturer. The tread width has nothing to do with the number 10.5.
    You need to measure horizontally to get the actual diameter of the tire, because it's flattened on the ground due to the weight of the car.
    I keep seeing peope getting upset over having "smaller" tires than as advertised by the manufacturer, only because they don't know how to properly read measurements.

      All depends on where you’re at and what you’re planning to do. My full disclosure opinion would be to run the 15x10 just to cover your bases, but again, it all depends.

    • @dylanwatson8468
      @dylanwatson8468 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Check what tire you'll run with it. Often times a certain width tire is made for a specific rim width for optimal tread patch on road with the given psi. Basically the skinnier the rim the more the tire patch will be rounded rather than being flat. On road can make getting proper tread wear for the psi a pain but off road can give you more sidewall past the rim for protection. 12.5 wides will want a 10 wide rim if your doing alot of on road.

    • @TrailBuilt
      @TrailBuilt  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes 35s and smaller would fit! If you go with 35s you MAY have to do some minor plastic trimming on the inner wind guard under the front bumper. You may want to consider a steering stabilizer to help with the larger tires and if you do any offroading, you won't have much flex with your suspension. But for on road use and very light offroading they'll work just fine.

      @Bill Madd if you want to daily drive on pavement I guess you could. For an off road purpose, I don’t think most people would want to lose a couple inches of overall travel that they have in the front end. You’re not gaining the extra down travel, because the lower control arms limit out at the same spot as stock. So you could lift it and have 8” of suspension travel instead of 10” (hypothetical numbers but it gets the point across). In a solid axle setting I can switch my shocks up to get a longer down travel and just lose a bit of up, but keeping my some total inches. Doesn’t work that way with ifs unless I’m missing something.

    You can't really measure the height like that with the weight of the vehicle on the tire, Every tire is going to have about 3% squat depending on the sidewall and weight of the vehicle. If you want a full 35" tire you'll probably have to by a 37" or bigger tire.

    hate to said it bro! but you measuring the tire radius "wrong"! cuz you are measuring from 12:00 O clock to 6:00 O clock. you should measuring the tire at 9:00 O clock to 3:00 O clock. why you ask?? think about it I am watching you video and you can see the tire on the ground pavement has a slight flatness to due to weight of the jeep pressing the tire flat to make the contact on road surface. And that why you getting a reading of 34" instead of the 35" radius tire size. Try measuring the tire at 9:00 O clock to 3:00 O clock . the weight of the jeep is not pressing against the tire it at those angle.
