  • This is a Motormouth couple car review of the all-new 2024 Subaru Crosstrek Wilderness subcompact SUV.
    The last time we saw the Wilderness model was at the New York Auto Show. Now we are in Sedona, Arizona to drive it.
    The 2024 Subaru Crosstrek Wilderness has a 2.5L 4-cylinder engine matched to a CVT with a CVT oil cooler to increase towing capacity to 3500 pounds. It has 182 horsepower and 178 lb-ft of torque, standard AWD. The engine features a lower final drive ratio for improved low speed climbing up to a 38 degree grade and a stronger rear differential.
    The 2024 Subaru Crosstrek Wilderness model comes standard with dual function X-mode, 9.3” of ground clearance, a retuned suspension, 17” black wheels with all-terrain tires, body cladding, unique bumpers, roof rails with copper accents and a lower front skid plate for added protection. The cabin features all-weather soft touch upholstery with yellow accents, the Wilderness logo embossed on the front seats and all-weather rubber floor mats that are easy to clean.
    Other features on the 2024 Subaru Crosstrek Wilderness include a 4.2” gauge cluster, an 11.6” touchscreen with wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto, a heated steering wheel, heated front seats, a 10-way power driver seat with lumbar support, 4-way adjustable manual passenger seat, a wireless charger, a 10-speaker Harman Kardon sound system and EyeSight Driver Assist Technology.
    The Wilderness is priced at $40,710 CAD/$32,195 USD.

    Love your reviews. Feel like riding along with you. If I was in market for wilderness trim in any of Subaru models you covered it well. Agree on wanting power passenger seat & power lift gate. Have a Forster convenience trim level & fits our needs. We were in Sedona this Oct & agree perfect weather. Had a rental car so no off roading on vacation but scenery of Sedona outstanding & brings us back frequently. Thanks for your review. 😎👍🇨🇦

    I just bought a 2024 Sport and it's a great car. However want to warn people that the mpg might not be what's advertised. My city mpg so far, with about 150 miles on my car is around 23-24, but better on the highway. I do live in Chicago and there is traffic. I imagine that with those knobby tires and higher ground clearance of the Wilderness, your mpg will be lower than expected. But you are getting a whole lotta car. Thanks Zack and Andrea!

    This was high on our list earlier this year when we were looking at vehicles but it was just a bit too small for what we wanted (but the vehicle itself was quite good). We did what was talked about in the video, upsized to the Forester Wilderness and it was perfect. Wasn't too much more money and has the power hatch like Zack likes. We traded in our Kia Sorento Turbo for it and couldn't be happier. We find the power good (not overly powerful, but don't find it slow either) and the fuel economy is about 25% better than our Sorento was. One thing you really notice with it (and likely the Crosstrek too) is how good they drive, especially when zipping around town. They seem to have a great turning radius, so navigating busy and crowded parking lots is much easier than most other vehicles. Regarding the Hot Topic question, the Wilderness models aren't just an appearance package. There is true capability added. Lower drive ratio in the differential (4.11 vs 3.7), transmission cooler, additional X-mode programming option for deep snow/mud, increased ground clearance, revised bumpers for improved approach and departure angles, A/T tires, additional cladding, skid plates, strengthened roof/rails for increased load capabilities, Soft-Tex seat material and revised suspension tuning to handle the slightly higher ride height. We'll never go off-roading, but we liked the rugged looks and the extra capability can still be good in the winter (although, a regular Forester would still be strong there too).

      The forester is one of my options as well until the new one comes when I went to the dealership and the sale person said 25 is not coming untill next year if I getting the forester right now I am getting the old models. That’s why I still thinking to get this

    • @jeffer1101

      @@carsrick3230 Nothing wrong with the current model. The styling changes for 2025, but I think the current model looks better myself (I think the 2025 model looks like a Ford). The 2025 also has the large screen system that is in the new Crosstrek. The current model has the previous system, which is a two screen set up, but still has plenty of hard buttons for most common features, which we prefer. The powertrain is the same, although there is talk of a hybrid powertrain option coming, which would be interesting. We got lucky, they had a Forester Wilderness on the lot so we didn't have to wait for it. Someone else had their name on it, but by the time it came in, they didn't want it anymore so it went on the lot. Good timing for us.

    • @carsrick3230
      @carsrick3230 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@jeffer1101 the good man , I personally like the big screen even though most of the ppl don’t like it , and that is the reason why I still consider the crosstrek or Forester, even though I know Forester is bigger car.

    • @jeffer1101
      @jeffer1101 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@carsrick3230 Everything is going big screens, get what you like. My Venza has a big screen too, and as much as I prefer the buttons, most of the stuff you don't really adjust much anyway. If the size of the Crosstrek works for you, get it. You'll love it. We went to possibly buy one, but it was just a bit too small (coming from a Sorento). The Forester does have a bit more of a boxy shape so you might find there is quite a bit more cabin space even though the exterior dimensions aren't overwhelming big. It's not that much smaller inside than our Sorento was but is a fair bit smaller on the outside. That makes it easier to fit in the garage and navigate parking lots. The Crosstrek is even smaller, so it would be even easier (but it's not tiny by any means).

    I bought the mid range Subie wholly for the 360 camera over the basic. It cost an eye watering $3600 more but worth it in my view especially if you're city driving (parking) in narrow places. One thing almost NO reviewer mentions--- the SUBARU crash tests are PHENOMENAL--- they show this car going through stuff that would devastate any other vehicle and the cabin space of the subaru stays it's shape- so you'd make it through a LOT worse wrecks in these than any other cars!!! THAT means a lot since I'm getting older and most likely wouldn't survuve most car crashes any more..

    I have a Ctek & Outback. Outback has power liftgate. I don't mind the manual one on the Ctek at all. With the power liftgate you have to be aware of how long you leave it up becuz it can drain the battery. Known issue in most Subaru models. There are work arounds with carabiners & other gadgets but definitely an engineering flaw.

    We have had our Crosstrek wilderness for a bit under a month now. If anyone has specific questions I'd be happy to answer.
    Very happy with it so far. My only real worry is that it's made in the USA and not Japan like other Crosstrek. There are some tiny fisheyes in the paint on the plastic bumper and one piece of interior trim isn't flush like it is on the opposite side. I'm very detail oriented and most might not notice that type of thing but it's exactly why I choose Japanese over domestic. Unfortunately as I said this car is manufactured in the states.

    Is the noise we can hear upon your first acceleration louder than say a RAV4 regular gas noise we know it has when it is accelerated quickly?
    That’s my first question.
    I’m asking because I have two opinions but they weren’t answered in this review.
    I drove a Forester (no not the Crosstrek) at -30 C in Winnipeg a few years back and the noise output was atrocious! Now I still love the looks of the Forester but that test drive took me away from the Subaru noise to my second CRV.
    Secondly I drove a Crosstrek a few years back as well and found its straight line tracking to be twitchy. IE it was hard to keep it centred. As well it really leaned into turns. Now I know, I know it has a low slung engine to keep you at low centre of gravity but the low centre isn’t found until some dipping is done first.
    So I would have liked to have heard in this review what the straight line and exits felt like regarding any twitchiness & leaning.
    Now to cut some slack for Subaru, I think I heard a few years back that suspension in the Crosstrek was altered to address this.
    Any thoughts?
    Go Ni

    I tried to buy a Subaru Outback Wilderness last year, and it was a massive pain in the butt to deal with the Subaru Dealers here on the East Coast (Canada). None of the dealers I went to used in-house vehicle trade in appraisals or sold used vehicles. They used a 3rd party to make the offer to buy the vehicle, and they were constantly lowballing. The vehicle I wanted to trade in was worth $24,000 - $26,000 (I received appraisals from non-Subaru dealers), but the Subaru dealers (3rd party) would only offer around $19,000. It was 100% the reason I did not purchase a Subaru, and many others here have had the same experience. Subaru has a serious problem with their dealer network here on the East Coast of Canada.

    Randomly watching this video and just wondering - what do people like about "power lift gates" and since these come together - "power seats". I've just switched from an old, base Forester to a new Outback Wilderness which has all the extra features and personally I like the Wilderness for the extra engine power, ground clearance, looks, but I don't much care for all these power luxuries and wonder why people want them. To me they're just additional things that can break, cost more and add weight. A power lift gate might make sense on a large SUV or maybe for a shorter or older person, but to me it just seems like a slower way to open and close the hatch. Power seats make sense for the additional comfort adjustments and maybe if the car can remember user settings to easily adjust seat and mirror settings to multiple drivers, which I believe the Outback Wilderness doesn't do (it also doesn't have the Driver Focus feature which I think enables that), otherwise it just seems like a slower way to adjust a seat. A sunroof? When it's sunny - you want it closed to avoid glare and when it isn't - there isn't much to look up at and if you're driving you probably shouldn't be looking up anyways. For me - I just see the cargo box through the sunroof. I guess it could be useful to peek at? Please change my mind or help me understand! :)

      Yup I agree. I just bought the '24 Crosstrek Sport and don't see a need for the powered lift gate. The opening isn't huge back there and I can't think of many situations where I would really need it, aside from hands full of grocery bags (maybe). Mine does come with a lot of electronic features, but to your point, it is stuff that can break more easily. My wife has the 2019 Premium model and does not have a lot of the stuff mine has, but still is extremely practical and functional. But the newer model is definitely a better ride overall. The '24 base model is likely the best no frills option, with perhaps the only catch being the slower 2.0L engine. Not a deal breaker IMO. Power adjusted stuff is overrated.

      The fact is that no one buys MT vehicles anymore, at least not enough to justify the cost and production of such transmissions. The percentage of people buying them just doesn’t make sense to make them.
      However, the question isn’t whether Subaru will make MT vehicles. The question is, would you actually buy one if it did. Too many times, people moan and groan about the demise of the MT but they would most likely not buy such a vehicle for other reasons.

    I found 182hp to be tolerable but whether they like it or not, carmakers are going to have to be dragged kicking & screaming into providing real power in their cars if they want to compete with buyers who are considering EV. I've got a '16 WRX (CVT - I know, it's a city car & I find manual shifting to be pointless - paddle shifting is more fun for me) and its 268hp is just enough for my needs. Atlantic Canada, lots of snow, but even the low clearance doesn't matter when you've got the Subaru AWD system. Apparently the CVT WRX (CVTRX as I call it) has the same 'type' of Subaru AWD as the Crosstrek. Nothing like freshly-packed snowy streets during or just after a storm, the road to yourself, turning off TCS and SCS & gunning it!
    I was shopping for something AWD & found the 152hp of the base model Crosstreks, just as I find the Honda HR-V - dangerously underpowered. To be honest, Subaru & Honda should be ashamed of themselves for having so little power.
    My next vehicle will be AWD, and I'm looking for the most power in as small a CUV as possible. So far, KIA's EV6 or the Hyundai Ioniq 5 EVs are the only ones with enough power. The EV6 is hideous to look at, inside & out, and there's something about the Ioniq 5 I just don't trust. Another year out of this WRX & we'll have to see. I just had my transmission replaced under warranty (otherwise would have been $11,200 CDN) & I must tip my hat to Subaru for standing by their CVT's so long.

  • @arkos55
    @arkos55 23 วันที่ผ่านมา

    The extra height and at tires most definitely affects handling. You just didn’t push it. Five minutes in a test drive and I could tell easily. Fine if you want the half inch of extra clearance and other features, but no question it doesn’t handle as well as the regular models.

  • @oralpowers7932
    @oralpowers7932 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    So if they install an oil cooler on the CVT what does that tell you about the transmission? And with EV's taking over the cities the roads are being improved, upgraded for heavier vehicles and far less pot holes. So the AWD and high ground clearance doesn't necessarily translate into heavy duty endurance and longevity in the city, just higher gas consumption.

Still you don’t buy a Subaru for that. You buy it because of how it performs in certain conditions, IE snow. There’s a reason I’m always stuck behind Subaru drivers and it’s because they’re concerned with safety. Anyway, don’t dislike the brand, but would never buy one.
