If you see Dear and it looks legitimate check if they are British, here it is still somewhat common (especially with people over 50) to see Dear Sir/Madam on business correspondents. Of course the nature of digital work is that it can be international.

Agree. Here in Japan and most Asian countries use Dear and Kindly to be polite enough. Philippines use Sir and Ma'am. Some may say they are representing an American company because of BPO industry/outsourcing jobs.

I am dealing with three of these emails in a week, and I am glad that I have researched about it and landed on this video.
I have already given them my address and Phone number, They are ready to send the checks.
But I think the smart thing is to move on from them and block them.
God bless you for taking the time out to make such content.

I was presented with two emails of the scam nature. The first one almost sucked me in because it sounded so convincing and it was my first exposure to that scam. Fortunately, I got wise pretty fast and didn’t give them anything.

Awesome video and also timely. I have not be scammed (thankfully) but I see how scams are suddenly rising especially now.
I’m really glad that you showed the verbiage/language that scammers use to con people. This helps us as web designers to do our due diligence by slowing down and reading between the lines of what’s said and what’s not being said from potential scammers.

Humbly, I got it all correct. Of course I should. I'm from Nigeria. Scammers leave a trace while trying to be careful. Most times as a web designer, a very well formated text is highly suspicious.

Hi Darrel, thank you for yet another amazing video. Also, for all the hard work that you and your team put in to make all these incredibly valuable yet free resources available to the public, I sincerely appreciate you. Love from Nigeria.

I was lucky enough to guess them all correctly, but I learned a lot from your explanation on every example. Where I only saw one red flag in an email, you pointed out several more! Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us! And thank you for doing this free of charge!

The one in which they send you a tempting offer is what you can call, "too good to be true". I know this from working on Fiverr.

Great video Darrel! It's sad you have to speak about this reality but thank you for such valued content. I was curious, do you have any example contract templates for the credit card payments you mentioned that I could take to my lawyer and tailor to fit my business?

I just found your YT video from April 26, 2019 "How To Create an Online Contract For Web Designers ( A Must Have For Web Designer )" on this very subject with an example contract template.
Do you have an updated version of this tutorial on YT and I'm just not finding it in your list of videos on your channel?

    • @darrelwilson
      @darrelwilson  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

eh, that one is still pretty valid. However, i would use proposalable for digital contracts because they have e-signatures

How about responding 2-3 times to find out if they are really scam. Do you just conclude based on how they sound? No one is perfect so I suggest you go ahead and respond to them to see how far it goes. From experience, most people just don't know how to hire web designers so they speak like they are trying to scam you, am patient with them and found out they are genuine. Don't be too quick to judge when you didn't respond to their emails. Thanks for the heads up.

99% of incoming requests or calls to USA from India are scams. Sorry, not sorry!! They can get a website built in India for 10% of what a 'good' web designer will charge in US. But not just India Most 3rd world requests into US are scammers, for this very same reason. Get a grip people. ALL the outsourcing done in the US is to these low wage, 3rd world countries, because the labor is cheap. We know it and so do they.
Also, who initiates any deal with a web designer w/o actually calling the phone number on the designers website to talk to a human? Anyone with a brain knows they need to talk to a 'real' person before forking over $500, let alone $1000's of dollars.
Also, the entire web design and SEO market in the US is saturated as hell. 10's of 1000's of web designers and 'SEO pros', all over the place, but the only people left in the US to spend on 'expensive' web design or real SEO campaigns are in the top 20% of income brackets. Most little sole owner-operator businesses either don't trust you (they've been scammed or been a target of attempted scams) or they can't afford the true costs of a web design/SEO package, and they want $2500 worth of work for under $500. Prices for the bottom 80% have plummeted, hence why so many US based sellers are using outsourcers in the first place.
Think about it. Most guru's selling "how to make money online" courses are only doing it because people are desperate to make money! The markets are all saturated! If what they were selling you worked, they'd keep it to themselves until it was burned out.
I just talked to Aaron Wall about this today, how Rand Fishkin tried to burn him with private advice he turned around and tried to screw him with, back before the market became so dog-eat-dog, with his own advice! (Back when Matt Cutts still worked at Google) As we both agreed, NO ONE gives away the 'secrets'. You're lucky if they will sell them to you for $1000's of dollars. I just reviewed a big time seller on Twitter, who was reviewing where to get backlinks. "Good" backlinks now go for $120 each, up to $1500 each or more. Very few are giving away anymore valuable advice w/o it costing you big bucks, and NO ONE in India is calling America for you to build some random website for them.
This is why Chris Walker could launch an entire competitor site to Fiverr! So many want cheap as dirt web design, even in the US. I've even seen websites for sale on Fiverr ranging from $500+ down to $15 effing dollars!! Seriously, a guy offering 5 (or 10, can't remember now) page websites for $15. Like everything else, it's gotten pathetically competitive. I actually hate I pivoted to local web design and SEO instead of staying on the plan to build Affiliate and Ecommerce websites.
I used to outrank Google for Google My Business in my area. Now I have to report all the douche rockets using phony addresses (one using the actual main Post Office) for their 'alleged' local Web Design agency business.
I know, this is long, but last but not least....Google's cheating as well. So what's the damn point? Go find Glen Alsops article from 2016, how Google helps the biggest corporations dominate the PPC and Affiliate markets. Google owns 90% of search, yet does more and more each day to create 'no click' search results for the world, so they keep you on their properties as long as possible.
