All of this bite inhibition training is great. I love the intention of it. I've been the veterinarian telling people not to play tug! This approach makes a lot of sense. As the mom of a 2 yr old and 4 yr old the last 2 episodes were essential as we wait to get our first family puppy. I had them running puppy bite drills. "Playing, playing, BITE..." then run the 4 steps. Hoping this game will give my boys confidence in playing with the pup.

Thanks SO MUCH! I have been following your plan in The Crate Games group, Collar Grab and IYC. Which have been really good!! Then after your bite podcast I immediately adjusted my position by not sitting on the floor with my puppy and then last night I followed your plan for tug it was amazing the difference almost right away! Yesterday the number of bites went down that quickly! The timing of these is so perfect! The more puppy content you can give would be wonderful. Thanks so much Susan!!!!

With older rescue dogs like Duke I struggle to get him to play tug. Noticed he tugs easier with soft tug material. Have had his mouth checked by vet. No problems there. If any treats on me he just wants the treats and does not wat to tug. I love your podcasts and catching up. Your training makes sense and love the games. You are an awesome trainer.💫💫💫💫💫 ❤

Susan - We are getting a puppy this coming weekend after 26 years without a dog in our home. You are an inspiration to me and most obviously, a generous soul sharing your knowledge to help people raise a positive canine family member. By listening to several podcasts and watching videos of the podcasts, which have great visual extras, I am feeling much more at ease about the responsibility that comes with having a dog starting at 8 weeks of age. I am similar in age to you and although we have had dogs and cats in our adult lives, my husband and I have not ever been the ones responsible for training a puppy except for small bits of play with puppies when we ourselves were wee ones. Thank you for all that you share freely. At this point, I have signed up for Crate Games and appreciate all of the other knowledge you share without asking for anything in return. In this era, that is amazing! What you offer is valuable!

Thank you so much Susan for your excellent podcasts! I'm enjoying them, and trying to catch up to the current ones, as I want to play along with the weekly challenges with my dogs. For this podcast the four games were: search game, collar grab game, intentional tug game and how's it taste? Most importantly for the intentional tug game is we need to remember the freeze to build in the release. I think I got the mechanics of these ones.

I love your videos ... we have a 9 week old labradoodle who has been with us for 2 days. By following your advice she will happily go into her crate and sleep without complaining, is getting more confident in toileting outside and is starting to inhibit her biting although she forgets when she is excited which is my cue to lower the excitement of play time and prepare her for a sleep. So far she is a happy confident puppy.

Great episode! One thing that might be helpful is to repeat the visual demonstrations so us humans can learn by repetition too & to show us what to do when the dogs are at the different stages of learning (rather than just when the dogs are doing what they are supposed to do). My puppy has a lot to learn, and seeing other puppies at that same stage might help me figure out where my mechanics could improve. Thank you so much for all your great advice!!

Sending your puppy bite inhibition training to my puppy buyers. Great information, love it! I have always taught young puppies to soften their bite by letting them nibble on my hand, I mean very young before they leave for their new families. The softened bite (generally by removing my hand when they start to chow down around 6 weeks old) is substituted for puppy licks and the word puppy kisses and praise. Folks don't always keep this up and the bite never softens (yes I know no puppy should have your hand in its mouth for ever but it's not easy for the novice to work that out). After watching these pod casts I am getting a lot of valuable insight into the follow on training. Thank you for all of this.

Love these podcasts. I listen to them while I'm hiking with my dogs. Learning so much and I always look forward to the next one! Not sure how to rate anything on the platform I am using to listen, but you were asking for suggestions and I have one. I'd love for you to do a podcast about reactivity. My young border collie gets really over aroused when she sees other dogs running around, particularly while waiting to enter the agility ring, but also in everyday life. This is something that we are working hard with but it would be interesting to hear your perspective. Keep up the great work!

I love that purple bungee toy you show us. Can you please share with us where you got it?
In a multi dog pack, do you train one at a time or all together? I have been having issues training the new puppy as it’s hard to get away from the rest of them!
I found your podcast today. I’m really glad that I did, I love how you explain dog and puppy body language. I have always had a large pack and it’s so important to know what is going on and I love your 5 stages of togetherness! It’s 100% true! Right now I have a pack of just 6 (yes I know sounds crazy lol but when you are used to having about 20 at a time, this is a small pack). I just brought a Great Dane puppy in, she’s ANNOYING lol but they love her. Even my cranky senior tolerates her and even plays with her once in a while! It’s been a long time since I’ve had a young puppy and since I’ve had her about 2 months now, it’s so crazy how we forget how it is raising a puppy in a pack! Your videos are inspiring, thank you so much for helping us all!

Your videos have been SO helpful, thank you!! My puppy has starting biting a lot so I'm trying to teach her that hoomans are not for biting, her toys are.
What happens if perchance my 10 week old golden always play bites my hands when I try to grab her collar? Do I still treat her while holding onto the collar? Do I keep holding the collar gently and (painfully) wait for her to stop nibbling before I give her the treat? Or would either of those still be rewarding a "bad" link in the chain behavior? Or practice grabbing closer and closer to her on the leash first, only rewarding if she doesn't bite, until I can maaaaybe touch/grab her collar? Basically pls tell me what I'm doing wrong pls. 😆

  • @jaydayrock

Help! Etc. Ok, my ten week old puppy is so agressive sometimes. She growls, then bites, I pull away, (of course) then since a week or so I try collar grab, she goes beserk!
Then I try holding her against my body, really, just holding her. That seems to settle her for a second or two, then I try to release her, and we're back to the growling, biting, craziness, as if she has to kill me! I will try your ideas about freezing, evaluating, etc. I am downloading your journal so I can keep track of howa many times, how bad. Thank you.

  • @IAMGiftbearer
    @IAMGiftbearer ปีที่แล้ว

I was doing this today with my new Malinois puppy. Malinois tend to be very mouthy and they do get carried away and seem to want to transfer their need to chew onto all sorts of things around them. On day two my puppy is starting to test me to see what is and is not acceptable to chew on. He did grab my shirt a few times, the throw blanket on the bed, and corner of a pillow. So far when he goes on to chewing on other things I redirect him and give him a toy to chew on. That for the most part has worked pretty well, but I was wondering if you have any techniques for that specific behavior that happens after the tug has ended. He kind of goes around like "how about this, how about that..." (especially looking for things that stick out to chew on) for instance the plug that goes into my laptop (which I have to watch him like a hawk to make sure he doesn't get).
I watched your video about getting them to sleep through the night and am trying him in the crate in my room this time. He is still whimpering but not as badly as he was last night when he was in a different room. He kind of goes in waves of whining, stops, and then starts back up again. I played some of those crate games with him during the day. He'll go in there on his own as long as the door isn't closed, but definitely doesn't like being locked in. He wants to be where I am all the time. I hope it will only take a few days for him to get used to being in there without having a meltdown. I make sure he has toys to chew on when he's in there in hopes he learns to sooth himself eventually. Next week I have a doctor's appointment during the day and he'll have to go in the crate when I'm gone. He came from a big litter and living with 3 adult Malinois so I guess he's not used to having to be alone for any period of time.

I have no problem with the “freeze” , he drops right away, if I was able to keep him engaged Idk if this is a confidence thing?, he does have fear (fear aggression). Please offer suggestions. I will continue to make it fun and playful to build his interest but I am curious if I can do something different.

So, that didn’t work. When I freeze, he just keeps tugging. When I offer a treat he lunges for it. And he is a big, 8mo 55 lb puppy, so that is a problem. Moving him closer and letting the tug go slack doesn’t work. He happily takes up the slack and chews on it. What next?
