  • I have a large deck off the back of my house and have had a few projects in mind for it for a while. I decided to tackle the first project, built-in storage seating with planter boxes. This video shows how I built the benches and is the first in a series of deck project videos I’ll be sharing on my channel.

    Man, I love your videos. I'm fact, I like you - you are so humble, genuine, and always ask for ideas for improvements. You are an inspiration for me to try and do some of these projects.
    This is a cool project.

    really great stuff, not sure if its applicable where you live but a couple pointers to make this build more enjoyable, for the planters i would recommend putting a garden liner inside so the wet dirt wont affect the timber in the long run and drill some holes for drainage. for the storage box I would recommend you use some plyboard sheets to seal storage compartment from creepy crawlers. thank you for sharing!

    Very nice! I just bought a bunch of framing lumber to start a project like this. I think the idea is exactly the style I'm going for too. Thanks for the ideas and inspiration. Going to check out your other videos as well!

    Looks good, great ideas. I build my planter boxes however off the back of the deck for a few reasons less wasted space and this gives the boxes a place to drain off the back of the deck. I have used cedar and the pressure treated. The cedar tends to keep the plants alive longer. The chemicals in the treated had effected lots of the plants. I also instal a water line to the planters a drip line basically to water the plants. I also drill some drainage holes along the bottom of the planters. I’m no in any way knocking you just giving some ideas that have worked for me. But really good job.

    Awesome work!
    If it were me making it, I would either add a secondary trim color for the seats and top planter area, or all together just add decorative trim to add some pop to the whole thing.

    Great inspiration for me. Maybe drill drain holes in planter boxes. Any concern about drainage between bottom of unit and top of deck?

    Pretty nice project! I like how you edit your videos. But aren’t those planter boxes going to rot pretty fast? I think I would’ve installed a moisture barrier before covering up the boxes with the deck boards. Keep going with these kind of videos!

    How do you plan on winter proofing the storage so that snow/ rain doesn’t ruin things? I am wanting to do this to add additional storage for our outdoor stuff (we live in a 1,000 sq ft home with no basement/ garage in MI) but am worried about that part. Thanks! Looks great!

    Kool project man!
    Your vid is from 2 yrs. I'm wondering if the moist from the planters rot the wood or if the paint did a good job protecting it..
    Also, I noticed the wood filler shinning differently than the paint, maybe it was the angle of the camera or did indeed was noticeable at first glance?

  • @industrialpalletworx3548

    I like your design but I'm struggling with a few things. Why leave the boards long and cut them off with a skill saw/ sawzall/ oscillating tool? Definitely not a fan of the gray but that's personal taste. I also didn't understand why you put the vertical uprights of the seating area around the front on the outside of the frame. Normally you would put them under the top and on top of the bottom for support, so the weight is being applied to the end of the frame not the screws. It seems that over time those screws may break since they are bearing the weight instead of the frame. Overall great idea. I think I may have added hinges to the end caps as well for additional storage access.

    • @grahamlawlor8361
      @grahamlawlor8361 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm with you on the grey paint. I may just clearcoat my PT to leave the wood grain showing. Also, I was wondering if there is a way to hide the hinges underneath

    • @industrialpalletworx3548
      @industrialpalletworx3548 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@grahamlawlor8361 there are ways to hide the hinges. I would use a piano hinge installed on the under side. A stain/ watersealer combo would go a long way

    • @yunomike.official
      @yunomike.official ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’m so glad you pointed that out about the vertical boards. Yeah, they def would break overtime since they’re bearing raw weight instead of the frame. Great catch before I started.

    Great project! I'm hoping to do something similar for a deck that currently has no railing. Question for you: how do these benches handle water? I know you don't want the water to pass through to your storage area, but do you get any standing water on the seats? I'm wondering if you could either slope the seats backward and leave a gap for water to flow through, or slope them horizontally so water drains toward the ends of your benches.

    • @MakersLane
      @MakersLane  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So how I built it water does get through. I mainly use it for the cushions, so they don’t get damaged. You would have to seal it after you painted it and yes build it with a slight angle.

  • @tholton78
    @tholton78 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm also building a seat similar to yours, except I'm using 1/2 hardwood playwood to cover the frame. I have a 15° slope for the back rest also. My question is, In the corner where you cut it at a 15° slope horizontal, could I do the same with the plywood im using?

      @@MakersLane most places ive seen, any deck over 2 feet off the ground need, at minimum, a 32inch high rail.
      if deck seating is installed there needs to be 32inches of rail / backrest from top of seat.
