@Dojo in a semi auto 10mm 200gr Hardcast is the bare minimum. With revolvers its 44 Magnum or bigger (i.e. 454 Casull, 460S&W, 500S&W). All these options come with a sacrifice of weight and capacity. A large number of Alaskan guides carry a 10mm semiauto because it's light and holds 15+ rounds. It's not as powerful at 44 magnum or other revolvers, but they can be much bigger and heavier and only hold 5-6 rounds. The Desert Eagel in 44mag holds 10, and 7 in 50ae, but it weighs over 5lbs and isn't reliable. The really funny part is people who live in Grizzly country are generally more scared of Mountian Lions....lol

We heard on a podcast that rangers consider a particular spot to be a hot zone for bears so we went lol. Just read about a guy killed by a bear in Yellowstone that had bear spray so I'm trying to figure out what to take next time. It definitely gave me a totally false sense of security

Indeed. I'd rather to carry more rounds and less recoil. It's all about shot placement, Head shot or center mass would get the job done. So, practice your accuracy and you can get that 45cal guy.
Indoors, 45s are actually quieter than 9mms. They are also less likely to over-penetrate than 9mms. This is something to keep in mind for those that use handguns for self defense in homes with multiple family members all living in the same home. That being said, I would rather use a 12 gauge shotgun loaded with a combination of slugs and 000 buckshot for home defense. Their lethality is unparalleled by any handgun and the majority of civilian rifles.

HAVING BEEN SHOT 2 TIMES: I was shot two times at point blank range, on bullet in the left chest. The second, fired into my abdomen as the attacker stood over me. The round that hit my left chest entered in and out or “through & through” (2 holes each organ) my left lung, stomach, spleen and pancreas, ricocheting upward into my back, next to my spine where it lay today. It essentially played ping pong with my organs. I was revived 3x and had multiple blood transfusions. The bullet….a 22 LR through a Beretta handgun. My point is, a piece of metal hitting flesh at high speed will always mess a body up. It’s not the caliber but shot placement. Let’s hope you never have to find out. One’s body doesn’t care about the caliber.

Hi Ian- I just wanted to say "Amen" brother! Im not a gun "expert" but all these guys arguing about size have missed the point: getting shot with ANYTHING sucks. My brother got a Purple Heart in the Navy chasing down guys who went AWOL with, um... documents that didn't belong to them, lets say. I know he's been through hell 'n back. Is that 45 regular or 45 +p+? The 45, when loaded appropriately, has similar performance to the 10 mm in its magnum load. The 10mm also comes in standard loads which puts it in the same category as the 45. Generally speaking, people automatically assume a 10mm will stop a charging 600lbs grizzly. No. A well placed shot will stop a charging grizzly. A 22lr is more effective than a 50BMG if you hit your target with the 22 and miss with the 50. I've seen 45s kill grizzlies. The detail is in the load and projectile. Fmj or hard cast with a steel case on a +p load will perform like the 10.
Velocity and bullet weight are the key to power.....not diameter. 230gr .45acp at 850fps and a 124gr 9mm at 1150fps have practically the exact same muzzle energy in ft lbs. Velocity is key. This is why calibers like .357and 10mm smoke the .45. The tiny 62gr bullet of a .223 at 3100fps is 3x as powerful as a .45.

Civil Defense ammo ended this argument permanently. 2100 foot per second 9mm that weighs 50 grains OR that 45 weighing just 75 grains a 1900 feet per second. Both are devastating, but that 9mm at 2100fps is an absolute monster.

If you use modern defense ammo and hit vitals then the target won't know the difference and if you don't hit vitals the biggest difference is they will bleed out faster with .45 which is precisely the type of thing you don't have the luxury to wait around for when using a gun to defend yourself. In exchange you get less accuracy, less capacity, more recoil, and more expensive ammo. So yeah against unarmored human threats I'm sticking with 9mm.

The weapons used were a 9mm pistol and SKS rifle. The first two officers killed who initiated the traffic stop were killed with a 9mm pistol. The day it happened, I was living down the street almost a mile from the stop and heard the shots. 9mm is a powerful killer despite all the BS stories about it.

This is the truth. It doesn't matter what you carry, so long as you can hit what you are aiming at. Most people struggle to get decent shot placement at 10 yards. Thats the problem no cartridge can mitigate. I will always carry my 1911 in 45 acp. Because I can hit 10" targets at 100 yards. I warm up at 50 and play at 200.

If you're only carrying a 1911 because you're "more accurate" with it is not practical. Your Block, being of a browning design, suffers the same flaws as my 1911. Just a little sand on the top of the barrel and you won't go into battery. Any decent shooter knows this flaw is universal among all autoloading pistols. Do yourself a favor and move your targets out farther. Your life, as well as others, may very well depend on it.
it always cracks me up that fudds still think because a 45 acp is slightly larger it is doing more damage. That heavy piece of shit is going like 900 fps and delivering less energy than a 9mm. Hollow points out of a 45 are extremely unpredictable, especially if you have a short barrel. Any bullet that hits the heart in a bad and meaty angle, ah.. even the brain and the spine will do.
Two words “shot placement” if you what good ammo like HST, gold dot, G9 you are all good to go but I always say train, train, train. I’m very blessed to be a part of a very awesome large group of people former Marines, military guys and other people all train with gear, run some really good drills, every Friday and Sunday we do a lot of night vision training at night, AR, pistol and Sundays are more of conceal/duty pistol drills.

Its not that readily available though. For a long time glock was about the only manufacturer that made them. That said, ive wanted one since the 80s and finally have one. A sig. I've also shot a friend's delta elite quite a bit. Nice guns. But also, 10mm is rarely found loaded full power from the factory.
I converted my .45 ACP Glock into a 50GI. I also bought the reloading dies. 230 gr 1000 FPS hollow points in 50 caliber. I mass produce it and it is phenomenal. Everyone can carry what they carry. As long as you’re protecting yourself, I don’t care what you’re printing. My wife can handle a 9mm G26. I’m not going to send her out with my 50GI. It’s all about your own confidence and comfort level.

Having spent many years in the Alaska bush, I'll share my select carry weapons. My long guns for protection from grizzly bears were either a Marlin 45-70 or a Mossberg 12 gauge. I also carried either a Ruger .454 or a Smith and Wesson 500. Any of these will kill a grizzly. Shot placement is important, but larger whole you make in the bear, the quicker the threat is eliminated.
Both calibers are awesome good for self defense,however I would use 45acp at close ranges up to 25yds,for longer distances the 9mm is superior in all aspects!! Thanks for sharing!!

The 45 is obviously a devastating round to hit by...anywhere. If hit in you hand, it will blow your hand off your arm. But just because one round is bigger than the other, does not mean the smaller round is weak. There is a gang land saying that the nine will separate your head from your spine. Seriously, the 9mm is absolutely lethal to your upper chest. If the 9 is a quality JHP, it will do similar damage as a 45 FMJ. Heck, even a 22LR has what it takes to punch through your chest and hit the heart.
Ah no.....a .45 acp won't "blow your hand off your arm" if you're shot in the hand with one. I've seen a hand shot with a .45 acp from a 5 inch barrel and yes, it made a decent size hole in the palm, but the hand was still attached to the wrist/arm. Oh, and I'm a former U.S. Navy Hospital Corpsman (Fleet Marine Force type) 10 years active duty, the last 7 with the Corps to include combat (obviously). I'm also a graduate of the U.S. Army's SF "goat lab" and several other medical and non medical schools....jump school, dive school etc.... The "if it hits you in the hand it'll tear your arm off" or anything close to that is a gross exaggeration and the thing of myth. All that said, given the choice between the .45 acp and the 9 mm, I'll take the 45 acp every day. I carry a Springfield armory TRP 1911 in .45 acp.

45ACP is better for hitmans thanks to it being subsonic and not harmful to your hearing as much as 9mm because 9mm is supersonic.(A special made 45ACP with a special made supressor is a godlike pistol for hitmans.)
I make my own 245 grain .45 "full wad-cutter" hollow-back hollow-points, I'm very certain they'll do more damage than just about any 9mm you can find. They move about 1000fps, cut a .45 caliber entry wound, then open up to .58, turn sideways, and penetrate about 23 inches in gel. Since the bullet is about 15.5 milimeters long at that point, that's a very big permanent wound channel. They're soft lead, so if it hits bone, that 245 grains is going to go right through, and make an even wider wound channel. Not good for grizzleys though. 😅
While I doubt that 45acp is as good as 9mm for EDC (mainly due to capacity issues) it has a peculiar advantage in home defense. Less penetration means you kill fewer neighbours after you hit/miss the perp.

45acp is for using in the hoods while 10mm is for using in the woods. 9mm is for conceal carry and small hands. 380 is for ankle carry or pocket carry back up. 22LR is for training and small animals.
Saw a video of a grizzly bear charging and it took a 30-06 to the neck. Still was charging with its neck completely jacked up and the second round stopped it and put it down. Wouldn't want a 45acp in that situation.
I carry .45ACP for the same reason. It's heavy. It's loud. It hits like a cannonball. It's the gun I own. I'm also super aware there are ballistically superior modern calibers that really show up .45ACP for the antique round it is.

Using jacketed ammo someone could possibly argue..but using a good hollow point is where the 9mm makes up ground. Its speed is what increases its terminal ballistics. The hollow point opens up greater creating an arguably equal wound channel. The 45 because of its slower speed does not open the hollow point up as much as the 9mm . When this is accounted for they are comparable using proper hollow points.. That is the ballistic testing not my opinion.

A 9mm would actually perform better ballistically against a large predator like a bear, the higher velocity of the projectile allows for deeper penetration, combined with the light weight of a 115-125 grain projectile it would be likely to destabilize or “tumble” inside the target causing more internal injuries.

Most of my adult life I said 9mm was great for women and children but men carried .45. Even though it has been demonstrated and I accept that the difference between the two is minimal I still perfer the .45 just don't denigrate the people who perfer 9mm. So of course now people have jumped on the 10 mm bandwagon and guess what? It really is that much better than .45.

9mm bullets have a higher muzzle velocity than 45 ACP bullets do Combined with the 9mm's smaller size than 45 ACP that translates into deeper bullet penetration a higher muzzle velocity and lower weight also means that the 9mm usually has less vertical drop than a 45 does so I will be sticking to my 9mm 😊

I like them both, but there’s a reason why one used to be the FBI’s favorite gun and now the 9 mm is. It’s easier to stay on target with a 9 mm. The rounds are easier to come by as well. Plus it hold more rounds. I think that pretty much seals it.
Actually, the most ironic part about your statement is that the FBI disliked 9mm after the fiasco of Miami Dade. 9mm in that era lacked lethality and penetration overall. They swapped to 10mm, a completely new cartridge that had pretty much no traction in the market, but the 10mm guns at the time were complete garbage. So they swapped back to 9mm. 9mm today is a little bit better than the 9mm of yesteryear. But it's still just 9mm, pretty much the bare minimum.
Also you can run a full power 230 grain 45 suppressed and be subsonic. You have to slow down the 9mm rounds to make them subsonic and actually quite with a suppressor.
Ballistics between 45 and 9 are almost identical, depending on distance. 45 and 9 at 7 yards is pretty similar, 45 and 9 at 50 yards is night and day. 9 still carries the energy
I had better groupings with my 45 and 10 rounds then all of the buddy's that had there 9mm and 10 rounds. Also had bigger holes in the target and no need for a backstop 2 miles behind it.

Indoors, 45s are actually quieter than 9mms. They are also less likely to over-penetrate than 9mms. This is something to keep in mind for those that use handguns for self defense in homes with multiple family members all living in the same home.
That being said, I would rather use a 12 gauge shotgun loaded with a combination of slugs and 000 buckshot for home defense. Their lethality is unparalleled by any handgun and the majority of civilian rifles.

HAVING BEEN SHOT 2 TIMES:
I was shot two times at point blank range, on bullet in the left chest. The second, fired into my abdomen as the attacker stood over me. The round that hit my left chest entered in and out or “through & through” (2 holes each organ) my left lung, stomach, spleen and pancreas, ricocheting upward into my back, next to my spine where it lay today. It essentially played ping pong with my organs. I was revived 3x and had multiple blood transfusions. The bullet….a 22 LR through a Beretta handgun. My point is, a piece of metal hitting flesh at high speed will always mess a body up. It’s not the caliber but shot placement. Let’s hope you never have to find out. One’s body doesn’t care about the caliber.

Is that 45 regular or 45 +p+? The 45, when loaded appropriately, has similar performance to the 10 mm in its magnum load. The 10mm also comes in standard loads which puts it in the same category as the 45. Generally speaking, people automatically assume a 10mm will stop a charging 600lbs grizzly. No. A well placed shot will stop a charging grizzly. A 22lr is more effective than a 50BMG if you hit your target with the 22 and miss with the 50. I've seen 45s kill grizzlies. The detail is in the load and projectile. Fmj or hard cast with a steel case on a +p load will perform like the 10.

Velocity and bullet weight are the key to power.....not diameter. 230gr .45acp at 850fps and a 124gr 9mm at 1150fps have practically the exact same muzzle energy in ft lbs. Velocity is key. This is why calibers like .357and 10mm smoke the .45. The tiny 62gr bullet of a .223 at 3100fps is 3x as powerful as a .45.

If you use modern defense ammo and hit vitals then the target won't know the difference and if you don't hit vitals the biggest difference is they will bleed out faster with .45 which is precisely the type of thing you don't have the luxury to wait around for when using a gun to defend yourself. In exchange you get less accuracy, less capacity, more recoil, and more expensive ammo.
So yeah against unarmored human threats I'm sticking with 9mm.

The weapons used were a 9mm pistol and SKS rifle. The first two officers killed who initiated the traffic stop were killed with a 9mm pistol. The day it happened, I was living down the street almost a mile from the stop and heard the shots. 9mm is a powerful killer despite all the BS stories about it.

This is the truth. It doesn't matter what you carry, so long as you can hit what you are aiming at. Most people struggle to get decent shot placement at 10 yards. Thats the problem no cartridge can mitigate. I will always carry my 1911 in 45 acp. Because I can hit 10" targets at 100 yards. I warm up at 50 and play at 200.

It keeps my barrel tight in the slide, coupled with two locking lugs, provides a very sturdy platform to send lead. Now let's talk about malfunctions. Your Block, being of a browning design, suffers the same flaws as my 1911. Just a little sand on the top of the barrel and you won't go into battery. Any decent shooter knows this flaw is universal among all autoloading pistols. Do yourself a favor and move your targets out farther. Your life, as well as others, may very well depend on it.
it always cracks me up that fudds still think because a 45 acp is slightly larger it is doing more damage. That heavy piece of shit is going like 900 fps and delivering less energy than a 9mm. Hollow points out of a 45 are extremely unpredictable, especially if you have a short barrel. Two words “shot placement” if you what good ammo like HST, gold dot, G9 you are all good to go but I always say train, train, train. I’m very blessed to be a part of a very awesome large group of people former Marines, military guys and other people all train with gear, run some really good drills, every Friday and Sunday we do a lot of night vision training at night, AR, pistol and Sundays are more of conceal/duty pistol drills.

Its not that readily available though. For a long time glock was about the only manufacturer that made them. That said, ive wanted one since the 80s and finally have one. A sig. I've also shot a friend's delta elite quite a bit. Nice guns. But also, 10mm is rarely found loaded full power from the factory.
I converted my .45 ACP Glock into a 50GI. I also bought the reloading dies. 230 gr 1000 FPS hollow points in 50 caliber. I mass produce it and it is phenomenal.
Everyone can carry what they carry. As long as you’re protecting yourself, I don’t care what you’re printing. My wife can handle a 9mm G26. I’m not going to send her out with my 50GI. It’s all about your own confidence and comfort level.

Having spent many years in the Alaska bush, I'll share my select carry weapons. My long guns for protection from grizzly bears were either a Marlin 45-70 or a Mossberg 12 gauge. I also carried either a Ruger .454 or a Smith and Wesson 500. Any of these will kill a grizzly. Shot placement is important, but larger whole you make in the bear, the quicker the threat is eliminated.

The 45 is obviously a devastating round to hit by...anywhere. If hit in you hand, it will blow your hand off your arm. But just because one round is bigger than the other, does not mean the smaller round is weak. There is a gang land saying that the nine will separate your head from your spine. Seriously, the 9mm is absolutely lethal to your upper chest. If the 9 is a quality JHP, it will do similar damage as a 45 FMJ. Heck, even a 22LR has what it takes to punch through your chest and hit the heart.

Ah no.....a .45 acp won't "blow your hand off your arm" if you're shot in the hand with one. I've seen a hand shot with a .45 acp from a 5 inch barrel and yes, it made a decent size hole in the palm, but the hand was still attached to the wrist/arm. Oh, and I'm a former U.S. Navy Hospital Corpsman (Fleet Marine Force type) 10 years active duty, the last 7 with the Corps to include combat (obviously). I'm also a graduate of the U.S. Army's SF "goat lab" and several other medical and non medical schools....jump school, dive school etc....
The "if it hits you in the hand it'll tear your arm off" or anything close to that is a gross exaggeration and the thing of myth.
All that said, given the choice between the .45 acp and the 9 mm, I'll take the 45 acp every day. I carry a Springfield armory TRP 1911 in .45 acp.

45ACP is better for hitmans thanks to it being subsonic and not harmful to your hearing as much as 9mm because 9mm is supersonic.(A special made 45ACP with a special made supressor is a godlike pistol for hitmans.)

You ever shot a .45 acp ? They're loud and what you said makes no sense.
I make my own 245 grain .45 "full wad-cutter" hollow-back hollow-points, I'm very certain they'll do more damage than just about any 9mm you can find. They move about 1000fps, cut a .45 caliber entry wound, then open up to .58, turn sideways, and penetrate about 23 inches in gel. Since the bullet is about 15.5 milimeters long at that point, that's a very big permanent wound channel. They're soft lead, so if it hits bone, that 245 grains is going to go right through, and make an even wider wound channel. Not good for grizzleys though. 😅

While I doubt that 45acp is as good as 9mm for EDC (mainly due to capacity issues) it has a peculiar advantage in home defense. Less penetration means you kill fewer neighbours after you hit/miss the perp.

45acp is for using in the hoods while 10mm is for using in the woods. 9mm is for conceal carry and small hands. 380 is for ankle carry or pocket carry back up. 22LR is for training and small animals.

Saw a video of a grizzly bear charging and it took a 30-06 to the neck. Still was charging with its neck completely jacked up and the second round stopped it and put it down. Wouldn't want a 45acp in that situation.

Using jacketed ammo someone could possibly argue..but using a good hollow point is where the 9mm makes up ground. Its speed is what increases its terminal ballistics. The hollow point opens up greater creating an arguably equal wound channel. The 45 because of its slower speed does not open the hollow point up as much as the 9mm . When this is accounted for they are comparable using proper hollow points.. That is the ballistic testing not my opinion.

A 9mm would actually perform better ballistically against a large predator like a bear, the higher velocity of the projectile allows for deeper penetration, combined with the light weight of a 115-125 grain projectile it would be likely to destabilize or “tumble” inside the target causing more internal injuries.

Most of my adult life I said 9mm was great for women and children but men carried .45. Even though it has been demonstrated and I accept that the difference between the two is minimal I still perfer the .45 just don't denigrate the people who perfer 9mm. 9mm bullets have a higher muzzle velocity than 45 ACP bullets do Combined with the 9mm's smaller size than 45 ACP that translates into deeper bullet penetration a higher muzzle velocity and lower weight also means that the 9mm usually has less vertical drop than a 45 does so I will be sticking to my 9mm 😊

I like them both, but there’s a reason why one used to be the FBI’s favorite gun and now the 9 mm is. It’s easier to stay on target with a 9 mm. The rounds are easier to come by as well. Plus it hold more rounds. I think that pretty much seals it.

Actually, the most ironic part about your statement is that the FBI disliked 9mm after the fiasco of Miami Dade. 9mm in that era lacked lethality and penetration overall. They swapped to 10mm, a completely new cartridge that had pretty much no traction in the market, but the 10mm guns at the time were complete garbage. So they swapped back to 9mm.
9mm today is a little bit better than the 9mm of yesteryear. But it's still just 9mm, pretty much the bare minimum.
Also you can run a full power 230 grain 45 suppressed and be subsonic. You have to slow down the 9mm rounds to make them subsonic and actually quite with a suppressor.
