Justin - ok, I just tried this throttle cap thing for the first time today (at 85%) while practicing some Split S maneuvers. Results: Better altitude control and less over-corrections. Only 6 months at FPV, however, I was able to notice a significant positive stick control experience right away. Will keep working on it, but I think it may be my "Go To." Thanks! 👍
I wish I would have saw this before I took off my Engineer X 2500Kv motors lol. I love the 2307 size, but the Kv was just to high for me, and killed the throttle resolution, not to mention a few cells in my batteries lol. I think I might put them back on now, after seeing this. I am so used to the throttle curve I get from 2306 2400 Kv I had to switch back. Great tip, thanks!
This is a good tip! I haven't tried it myself, but I have noticed that there's barely any difference in speed between 100% and 85% on the stick when I'm flying. The only thing really is how much more juice it's demanding.
-100 through 85 throttle channel is an 92.5% throttle cap. There's 100 points of resolution either side of zero. Outputs is used to cut off the unused points that your Quad won't read. As it stands your sticks actually have 2% less resolution because you haven't set them right.
Justin Skinner Sorry mate didn't mean to throw a spanner. See in the top right corner where your see the actual Nano second pulse output where you adjusted the value. That's the output the receiver puts into the quad FC. It's the same values you see on the Betaflight receiver page. Those only are read between 1000-2000us, and anything else is classed as invalid or out of range. It 'maxes out' once you got below 1000us or above 2000us.
Justin Skinner What you doing does work, don't get me wrong. Just the math is a bit off. What I'm getting as is your end points on your pitch, roll and yaw sticks aren't sent right. At full deflection your outputting a value that maxes out, so your losing a little bit of resolution on the sticks because the full deflection area is basically wasted and ignored.

I’ve seen guys doing this for over a year now, but I’ve always been too scared to try it for fear of screwing with the feel of my quad that I have memorized. Maybe I will actually go forward and test this on a track now. I’ve been able to pull quite a few sub 17s rq laps in practice. It would be really interesting to see what impact this would have... thanks for the video!
You should do this to your inputs instead of outputs. With outputs you are just cutting the positive side of your stick. With inputs you can "slide" the whole stick input down to get what you are describing. Basically add a -15 offset to your throttle input. This way your mid point will actually shift.

I think I stand by what I said, numbers excluded. The overall result is the same regardless of the numbers I threw out and that's what counts. I see the weights suggestion also, but in the end i'm still seeing an increase in resolution on the top half of my sticks with this method and the whole point in the first place for me doing this was to remove that bit of potential power so I didn't accidentally bump to much throttle causing me to gain altitude. Improving resolution was a side benefit and as I see it on my radio, the top half of my stick does, in fact, stretch more, while maintaining the same midpoint. The weights method, or offset method, or whatever, looks to do similar except it seems to move midpoint down as well. This to me would mean you need more stick to hover, correct? I don't see that as a good thing, now that I've put thought into it. I just want more control in the area I'm mostly in, which is the top half of the stick. So I think this method is still the best for what I'm after. I could still be misunderstanding something, correct me if I'm wrong.
Install Betaflight 3.4..go to the cli and type Set throttle_limit_type = scale Set throttle_limit = 80% ( or what ever you what ) Save And your done You can have it set up differently on your different rate profiles.. 😊
Be mindful of copying this model when you setup your next quad. If you're using RF/F1 - the install wizard will compensate for the cap, so make sure to reset before you do the config. BF/BTF I believe now has a scale option that allows you to do it in software which should give you better resolution than doing it in radio. Also for freestyle/gopro setups it may be worth playing with bumping the first 0-10 percent of throttle to maybe around 25%. Since the quad needs a lot more stick to even hover, this should give you back a lot of resolution where it matters.

How does this affect low throttle control? Typically on a tight technical course, i find myself in the 30-45% throttle range most of the time. If I did this 85% cap would that mean that I would have to bump up my "typical cruise" throttle to about 45-60% throttle range for a tight course? Or will it be the same (30-45%)? and I just dont get the top 15% speed of the throttle?
Your mid point and below is unaffected, it’s just your top half of your stick that is adjusted. There is another method if you wanted your entire stick range to change. I’m remaking this video to explain more clearly and show the other method as well

this fully depends on your stator size.. with a 2207 you will definitely "miss" something if you cap down the top 15%.. with smaller height stators not so much so this might make sense to cut the portion of the throttle where it tapers off anyway .. so yea.. for me, i need that juice, just in case :D
not surprising at all^^ thats exactly what i said.. smaller stators taper off anyway so it doesnt really hur to cap them off a the top^^ but with 2207 you have more linear thrust even in the higher throtle range so it would be wasted if you cap there :P
Justin-I have tried this out and I like it. Just came across this new BetaFlight "feature" today. Looks like as of BF 3.4, you can do the same thing through BF now. It sounds like it is more "user-friendly" and you can turn it ON/OFF with a switch as opposed to having to go back in to your TX. Ok tried it on my freestyle rig.. Didn't like it.. Granted the motors are only 2300kv.. I could see the appeal on race courses though with bigger motors

that's what your rates are for, you can control the response of roll/pitch/yaw that way!

Well suprisingly it worked very well on a superlight 2205 setup that comes in at 235g with props. Really helped with maintaining altitude
So... I wouldn't say fully stator dependent. More pilot dependent ;)

85% would be setting it to 70 bc it's -100 to 100 (0.85x200)
