Absolutely love this drama, can’t watch anything else atm because I’m absolutely obsessed! It’s a rare costume drama production nowadays that actually goes above and beyond to make an authentic Song Dynasty drama replicating the famous painting down to the tee, also including a lot of interesting details and quirks of life during this time. Definitely worth checking out if you like a story with lots of twists, incredible actors and a good laugh👌.
It’s definitely worth a higher goldmine rating. I’m enjoying not only the production but I do care about the family and want them to live happily (and get a mansion of their own 😂).
They have 3 Song Dynasty experts with them at all times during filming so this drama is worth-watching just for the scenes alone. It’s the coolest way to immerse yourself in late Song Dynasty. Ep 21 was exhilarating! It’s so well executed. Things moved quickly, revelations came whoosh in your face and you’re like ohhhh damn now…😂 I would rate Riverside Code 2-3 goldmines, 1 for production, 1 for the acting, 1 for storytelling & the message that’s still so relevant in this day and age.
Totally engaged with this drama and would give it between 2 and 3 goldmines. Twenty episodes in I'm only sad that there are only six more episodes to go. Love it all the look (good to hear that much of it is authentic to the historical period), the story, the characters, the acting. I care about everyone of these characters and was especially moved by the bromance between Mo Er and his childhood friend. My partner is doing a puzzle of one of the panels of the enormous painting at the same time. We are totally immersed in Riverside Code at Qingming Festival.
Same, it’s a very watchable drama for me and it’ll most likely be among my favorites as long as it doesn’t pull a Fengqi Luoyang on me (a visually splashy drama that I had high hopes for but left a bad taste in my mouth due to its gratuitous and badly done ending). Am liking most of the characters too
Thanks as always for a bite into history. Love listening to the information. Also, now I understand why Jin Guangyao always worried about his hat in The Untamed
So i had to get past the first two episodes that kinda throw you into it but after that, MY GOD THIS IS GOOD! The actors are fantastic, costumes are great and the plot isn't conventional which i appreciate. It also makes me laugh all the time which is needed. Edit: I'm always surprised when you hate something and i like it and vis versa. I've tried to watch your top dramas and i hate them 😅 But I'm actually upset that you don't at least like the male lead. This acting is amazing!
Thank you for the video. You look lovely Avenue X. Knowing you have high standards for aesthetic and authenticity, and seeing the stills on the drama already makes me want to check out the drama. Keep well Avenue X.🤓🍀
拜见AvenueX! Thanks for another great review. The historical context is so helpful thank you. Yes the Hanfu clothes are always amazing. I saw a video the other day on WeChat of two women synchronized snowboarding in Hanfu outfits - two fairies snowboarding the moon 🌙 Yes, I noticed that in some costume dramas - the palace is huge so they deliver the food from the kitchen in boxes. Oh, and commoners suffer because they are commoners, and commoners commit crimes because they are commoners - really?! I won’t pass early judgement, but I much prefer the plot line of the Ye Hua character suffering because he is a royal and he dreams of becoming a commoner. Looking forward to the next review! 🙏🙏🙏
BTW, I wonder if you watched Always on the Move with Bai Jing Ting and Ding Yong? It's about two railroad detectives. I learned a lot about Chinese social changes in the last 50-60 years from this series.
I dropped my Youku subscription because of the skin smoothing on all of the cosume dramas they produce. If another platform, like Viki, airs this, I'll watch a few episodes for the costumes.
I started watching this drama and it’s good. I have fallen asleep during some episodes but I was tired 😂. I’m watching this and Blossom. They are very different but good.
I super enjoy this drama, first episode was the weakest for me, after that wow. And love the scenery, quality, costumes, story and the most the characters.
I finished "Brocade Odyssey" and the ending could have been so much better, it was rushed, lacked romance and didn't explain how the protagonist cured himself of the poisoning. Watching "Blossom" and really enjoying it.
Hmmmm I am at about Ep 12 and have basically dropped everything to enjoy this every day during the holidays. At least a 2.5 Gold mine rating for me. Beautiful mood, adequate but not over bearing tension, and lots of laughs because you quickly identify with the characters and their motivations from Ep 1 perhaps, definitely by Ep 2. I especially enjoy the editorial notes at the opening and closing about the Song Dynasty when China was the biggest economy in the world and had a gdp per capita of more than 4 times that of Western Europe This is just what the Dr ordered after a horrendous year and will be on my list of Top 3 CDramas of 2024. Enjoy 🎄
This time we are on a similar page. I like the look of it but, having reached episode 6 I find I am not really connecting with any of the characters. I'm not sure I shall continue.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels that Bai Bai He is the wrong choice for her character. She seems to put very little effort into the role, while the actress playing the younger version is much more engaging. On the other hand, Zhou Yi Wei is truly captivating; I’m late to discover him, but he commands the screen every time he appears. I've been binge-watching C-drama crime and mystery series like Strange Tales of Tang 1 & 2, and now this one. I have to admit, the repetitiveness of some characters' fates can be quite depressing to watch. But, this series is still better than many of the other dramas I've seen...I can’t complain too much!
@@lunzeea I think I read somewhere that the book this was based on is set 10 years before the fall of North Song Dynasty, lots of political corruption as evident in this drama. Even for the painting there’s an argument that it was painted after the fall of Song Dynasty as a tribute to what was. So the depressing/unjust ending for many of the characters make sense for the time but I agree it’s a little repetitive.
A From this review , the highest praise goes for the technical aspects, especially the costumes. Good to know, but for me the relative weakness of plot and characterization is much more important. I might take a look at the first few episodes, but absolutely accurate historical details won’t win me over.
Okay, i enjoy great mistery drama. And it's shame this drama not makes me interesting to watching them. I like the aesthetic. It's different and more authentic. But still tho. Detective Conan done better jobs and conan kinda repetitive sometimes.
I think everyone involved in the creation of this drama have put so much effort in to the minor and difficult areas of the drama but have ignored the easy but the most important areas of it. This drama is very informative as an educational material. I enjoyed the scenery, how the sets are made, how the cg is used and mostly the small informative part at the end of each episode about the song dynasty. To me, the main drawback of the drama is acting coz the main leads don't fit in to the ancient times. Even as a non chinese, I feel like their tone of speech and behaviour are not that of ancient chinese. The actors are unable to get into the character. They are just doing the scenes as described in the script, but unable to become the real people who experienced those moments which makes it difficult for the audience to empathize with them. In this regard, zhou yiwei did a good job in saving his character and the drama. The cases are not interesting and the comedic parts inbetween felt forced and it sometimes diluted the suspense of the cases. Don't know whether it is the fault of the original author or the screen writer. This drama shows that casting and acting skills should be arranged carefully and should be suitable for the type of the characters and type of the period setting coz even a bad character can be saved by good, convincing acting!
i found this drama is way much better than Strange Tales of Tang Dynasty, I really don't know what ppl are so fond of Strange Tales of Tang Dynasty ,I felt nothing toward the character in that drama ,the case folding was good but that pretty much all , the pace was so slow to me and I was not interesting in the main leads stories , in term of script Strange Tales of Tang Dynasty is WAY much better.
I agree with you on the way ZSW delivers his lines sounds contemporary and it's also hard for me to buy Wen Yue as a trained assassin, but overall I'm really enjoying this drama. I also think the points you bring up about it not being that great of case breaking... I think that's mainly source material + script writer. I read the first two novels and neither are page turners and pretty much whenever you get to an exciting part, it drags for another 30 pages.. so I think the script writer/director just didn't have the greatest skills in figuring out how to make things really exciting and edge of your seats. I also think Judge Dee Mysteries suffered from the same thing big picture wise. I really enjoyed the interactions between some of the characters (the coroner pair, the detective trio, etc) BUT connecting the family story through line and upgrading cases... well I think that just suffers from general Chinese Dramaland problem -- mediocre original source with mediocre script writer adaptation.
This series lost me within 20-30 minutes because I did not care about the characters. Because I did not care about the character(s) then I did not care about their stories or them or the people around them. I moved on. I am enjoying Blossom because my experience with Blossom is the total, 100% opposite. I care. Period.

Yeah I'm shocked at the low rating she gave cause I think it's pretty good
I'm enjoying it greatly, too.
It’s definitely worth a higher goldmine rating. I’m enjoying not only the production but I do care about the family and want them to live happily (and get a mansion of their own 😂).
I would say one of the best dramas this year
I am listening to you speaking but staring at the white cup behind you (it is so cute!!!!)
me as well... it's a scene-stealer 😂
Yes, me too 😂. Been noticing that since her last video

@@kathlynsm8059 oh yeah Luoyang’s ending…it ruined the whole drama for me.
This drama is just so good that it should be 35-40 episodes like the usual C drama. A pity it's only 26ep
Thanks as always for a bite into history. Love listening to the information. Also, now I understand why Jin Guangyao always worried about his hat in The Untamed
I wasn't planning on watching this drama, but Song Hanfu is so beautiful, now I may have to watch it just to see the costuming. 🤩

I’m looking forward to watching this drama! When I viewed the trailer, the aesthetics portrayed caught my interest!
Qingming festival is about celebrating ancestral heritage and C-Dramaland has really given tribute to their Song Dynasty heritage with this drama 😊

@air2air786 thanks.
Youku's skin smoothening and the glowing yellow filter are terrible. They make the faces paper thin and without any expressions
Merry Christmas 🎉

Thank you for your informative review. Sometimes we agree on dramas. A few times we differ on dramas. Watch you next time.
I mostly started this because of Zhang Xinyu lol. She's so gorgeous. I wish they gave us more insight into her background.
