Hello folks! And a very warm welcome back to What’s For Tea :) for tea tonight I made these amazing fish cakes! We absolutely love a fish cake.
You can add almost anything you like to these…peas and sweet corn are nice additions, and use whatever fish you prefer. I’ve used cod in these ones, but salmon or haddock are also popular choices.
Everything I used will be listed below,
    -Cheryl x
    __________________________________________________________________
Makes enough for 6-10 fish cakes (depending on how big you make them)
    ShoppingList:
    500g / 1 lb White fish fillets - I used cod (skinless & boneless)
A good chunk of butter for frying - about 50g or a few tablespoons
A shake of salt & pepper
    4 Baked potatoes - roughly 800g / 1.6 lb
3 Garlic cloves - sliced or minced
2 Spring onions - finely sliced
    1 Tablespoon of thyme
    1 Tablespoon of parsley
    150g / 5.2 oz Flour
    2-3 Eggs, beaten
    100g / 3.5 oz Panko breadcrumbs
250ml / 9 floz Vegetable or sunflower oil, for frying

Love fishcakes, the way we do them is say canned salmon or tuna eggs a wee bit of floure and some old bay seasoning, once the patties are made we refrigerate for a few hours before frying they tend to hold together better

They look lovely, and a far cry from the fish cakes of my youth which were less than half the size and a peculiar shade of orange. The chunkiness is nice - shop bought ones rarely show indisputable evidence of fish content! Thanks for the video ... and now it's very nearly tea time. 🙂

Looks good Cheryl. I would take those potato skins and crisp them up in the oven and add some cheese green onion maybe a bit of ham then enjoy them with a dollop of salsa and or sour cream! Mr WFT needs an appetizer!

Hello, I have just recently found your channel. I made your mince/tatties...so good, right back to my mum making it for us on the farm. Today I made your cod cakes A+...I destroyed the first one...used a cup measurement...omgosh a wee bit too much. Then went .ahhh yes, she used a blue half cup. Switched it up had better success. Sorta tricky to keep together, but you got the hang after the first1.5 ty for the recipe. Cheers from Cape Breton, Canada

Oh these look so good. My mum made fishcakes years ago but using haddock and the fish did crumble it didn't keep its shape but it was still really nice. I think the panko breadcrumbs you've used would be really nice cos ma mum used Ruskoline and its just no the same eh. The fresh fish and potatoes are so much better than shop bought. I'm going to make these, thanks for sharing the recipe xx

Thank you for sharing, Cheryl! I'll be heading to our local farmers market, soon. See what they have ot offer. A very fine herb to go with fish and shrimp is always tarragon. Just a hint. It's got this kinda sweet-ish taste to it. But it's a perfect match.

Great stuff Cheryl! I used to fish for cod in the lower Clyde. cod’s awesome but fish cakes are a good way to use those more ‘ordinary’ fish like coalfish or flounder that don’t taste as good as cod on their own😎👏👏👏

When you freeze them. Do you coat them in the flour, egg and panko first? How do you thaw and cook them once you have taken them from the freezer?

These look lovely Cheryl, very evenly cooked, by the looks of them. I've never thought of using butter for frying fish, must give that a try. Interesting to see you left the fish and tatties in chunks. Any fishcakes I've had, or made, have been mixed much more thoroughly, almost mashed together. I'll give this a try next time.
Just curious, does "chuffed" translate OK for your U.S. viewers? I'd consider it to be a Scottish word but could easily be wrong.😁

Like I say i did make some fish cakes now that’s interesting, wet potatoes, my fish are quite wet but i did boil my potatoes l have made previously with boiled potatoes and never had them so wet. Maybe because i cooked the fish in milk, I did place the fish to drain off excess milk i usually pop my fish in a frying pan. I certainly don’t like them so wet makes them so difficult to handle in my air fryer. Again thank you for an interesting video. After saying all this the fish cakes were delicious

    • @WhatsForTea
      @WhatsForTea  ปีที่แล้ว +3

Hi Paul, it's basically mayonnaise, finely chopped gherkins/chopped pickles or capers and herbs such as tarragon and dill...sometimes lemon juice is added :) it's very commonly bought in a jar here...much like mayo is.
