Red Squirrel Alarm and Bark Calls

  • Amazing sounds of a mother Red Squirrel giving the alarm call followed by furious barking call when her nest is discovered. Crank up the volume and enjoy! - Clearly they are the boss of the forest. Squirrels and chipmunks (which are really squirrels) makes some of the most unusual sounds in northern forests.

The little red squirrels rule my neighbourhood and chase off all the grey squirrels. Two years ago I was feeding a stray cat, and the red squirrels got into it and started liking the dry cat food too. I actually witnessed one squirrel approach the cat while she was eating and bully her off her food bowl. Luckily there were two bowls and for about five minutes, both cat and squirrel sat side by side, eating. When the cat went to a rescue for adoption, and the food went away, the squirrel angrily tore apart the little shelter I'd built like a tiny red pitbull. It was hilarious. Nobody wants to mess with the reds. They're very spirited!

Yed, if they're the eastern grey squirrels (grey/brown/black/cinnamon colour variants) they carry a disease that wiped out majority of our native reds almost a century ago, due to a foolish zoo official importing some specimens of the EGS from eastern Canada, and later sloppily allowed some to leave their confinements, culling the native reds as the city grew along with good conditions for the EGSs. .... :-(

We have both greys and reds around my home. The reds are more aggressive, even though they're half the size of a grey. I've seen a tiny red chasing away 3 greys who were running for their lives. The funniest thing, with the reds in particular, is that they squeak as a result of moving. One of my little reds will get skittish and run off, and what you hear as she runs is, "squeak, squeak, squeak" in time with the footsteps. And they're FAST. It's pretty amusing to see & hear.

what's really impressive about the gray squirrels is that when you have a gun, instead of running to the tops of the trees or running away from you through the trees they will actually run down going sometimes within Arm's Reach of you, because they know that that's the only way he won't have a shot. I've stood at the bottom with my arms out in a bear hug type position to scare them away from going that route and they will take their chances instead of staying up there on the branches.

Not so cute when they chase all the other wildlife away, either, including other squirrels twice their size. :) Or when they walk halfway across the kitchen floor to get the food one puts out there to see how bold they are. Yikes. I'm caught between adoring and fearing this species of squirrel. If they were tame, calm, and affectionate, I'd love the heck out of them. But - they are not.

you have to find where they get into yourattic and fix your structure permanently and not with a cheap material or they'll destroy it easily. Once they've been inside one time they will try hard to get back there. Don't do anything else because it will only solve the problem temporarily. Trapping them or hurting them is stupid and will not solve the problem as more will come. You have to fix your house.
