    Hypnotic Specter was once one of the most feared creatures in all of Magic: the Gathering, but at this point those are days gone by. In this video, I delve deep into the card's competitive history, and explain what made "hyppie" so good.

      The irony is that both of those cards re-entered Standard quite a bit before your 2012 re-entry. Both exited after 4th Edition in 1995 but got reprinted in 9th Edition in 2005. (Royal was in 8th Edition too.) Both remained in the core set for a few sets after that.

      @@Melvinvanharn LOL what? Do you even have the faintest notion of how it was back in 1994?
      No internet. All homebrews. And no, creature removal wasn't used that much. In fact, the winning deck of Worlds 1994 (Zak Dolan's WUG Control) had only five (creature) removal cards: 4x Swords to Plowshares, 1x Wrath of God... and that was a CONTROL deck.

    The "how good was it actually" are cool just for the fact they become less dated over time. They're locked in aspects of magic history. The top 10 lists are more relevant to the 1 year-ish window of their release, as a few years can pass and revisiting the list is a whole new video.

    I have fond memories of the Spectre. We played a lot with it. The most fun times I've had with it were our friend group's re-plays of the first Finnish MTG Championships, which were in 1995. We did a re-run in 2000 and 2005. I played a BR discard deck with Spectres, Hymns and a Mindtwist in both, splashing some green in the first one. We had about 12 players in both of those, and I placed third in the first one and won the second one. Obviously first turn Swamp-Ritual-Spectre was a common start, but then again, the opponents Mountain-Lightning Bolt was almost as common.

  • @CaesarShadowKnight
    @CaesarShadowKnight 28 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Oh man, this unlocked a core memory of my brother and I being introduced to MtG in 2002 when Onslaught released.
    Hyppie, Megrim, Icy Manipulator, The Rack, Black Vise, etc. were all mainstays in the deck my dad used to facilitate applications of the different interactions we’d been learning about within Magic: the Gathering. Few years later, he ran Dimir Mill including JtMS. It became routine to watch our entire starting hands promptly move to their respective graveyards and maybe 1-2 lands on board.
    Fortunately, since my primary format and archetype are Legacy Reanimator, I’ve not let a likely over exaggerated childhood experience from 22 years ago influence my deck building.

    The true power of Hypnotic Specter laid in the threat of going Turn 1 Dark Ritual into Hypnotic Specter. As a result, Type 2 (now known as Standard) was dominated by 1 mana answers in Swords to Plowshares and Lightning Bolt. The random discard had a habit of stripping a key land or Wrath effect at just the right time (in combination with Hymn and Stupor) and then keeping your hand empty to suffer damage from The Rack to get you in range for a big Drain Life. Mono-Black was just a very powerful and synergistic deck for the time that it dominated the meta, and in that context Hypnotic Specter was a key part of deck.
    Nowadays, creatures have been pushed so hard that they don’t see play unless they provide immediate value or are part of a combo. Waiting a whole turn to attack to get some utility other than eating a removal spell wouldn’t really cut it nowadays. The only place where I would play Hippie is in my Nicol Bolas EDH deck.

    I played solo black and I remember being trapped more than once with it. For instance I would play the dark ritual / hippie combo on turn one only to be taken down by a lightning bolt, swords to plowshares, or another staple anti-creature card. Pretty much any competitive deck would have several of these types of cards, so there's at least half a chance he had one ready to go just for situations like this.

    I really like the series. I must say though; if you cut bakc on top 10, don't just have it exclude the fun themes. I like the lists that are data based, but part of the charm is that the "most expensive" "busted" and such are less than "worst art" or "cards I thought were good, that are actually bad". I loved seeing the Hanukkah, Halloween, and April Fools videos. I also like seeing you take apart certain types. That was really fun. This series has place though! You've got a lot of good content. I will add, finally, I like the deck history videos. Those are really long, so I know they're a heavy gamble. I think this is a good series though! Please keep it!

I bought it off him and won like 10 games in a row. So next day my friend goes and buys a playset of Hypnotic Specter. Hymn to Torachs. Ect. Think it cost him like 5 bucks to make the entire deck. Then I couldn't beat him. We did a few drafts after that then we both quit for a number of years.

    When I was first starting to play in 8th grade, I didn't "build" a deck. I just shuffled every card I owned together with some lands and that was my deck, at least until it got to be around 300 cards or so. (Many others did the same, so I wasn't really at a disadvantage.) Even at that early stage, where I liked cards much more for their art and flavor than their actual power in the game, I could tell Hypnotic Specter was really good. It might well have been the first card I actually bought four copies of; it was either that or Lightning Bolt.
    Anyway, I'm definitely enjoying the series so far. If you do one a week, it seems like it would be at least several years before you start running low on cards to talk about.
