I suppose it boils down to personal preference. Each product/model has its own unique features. The art I recon lies in the ability of the musician to bring these features to life. During the past 45 years I owned Korg, Roland and Yamaha keyboards. Never been disappointed with any and enjoyed exploring them to the full. Both of these 2 above are welcome in my home.

Considering that the Yamaha Genos was released back on the 2nd of October 2017, it still has an absolutely brilliant quality of sounds and styles like no other in my opinion. No other brand has such beautiful and so authentic rhythms as Revo Drums found of the Genos. So really in all fearness, it's like comparing technology which is like 5 years and 10 months old if the maths do well ... I do like Korg and in a matter of fact, I owned 4 Korg keyboards which I enjoyed however with this new Korg Pa5x, I seem to find after trying it out in Melbourne, Australia that the styles seem to greatly be lacking inner harmony and also as if you're playing drum and bass with a settle hint of orchestarion in between! I will be waiting for the new Yamaha flagship that will eventually replace the current Yamaha Genos Ver. 2.1 no matter when that will be ...

      Absolutely! This.
I tried the SX 900 and the Casio CTX 5000 and then the Genos and even though it’s quite expensive, I’m considering upgrading from the Genos to the Genos 2 because I like it so much.
I’m nearing retirement and the cost is not that prohibitive for me.
As I keep putting things like this off as I get older, I keep asking myself what am I waiting for.

I’m someone who makes my own backing tracks … my own sound, interpretation, … a system like that is interesting if you want to work fast. But originality … that’s something else and you must learn al these functions and use the instruments in a right way. So, I think for a good result … a musical taste , the sound and how to handle the styles are important. My first impression, the Genos 2 sounding very natural, more details, beautiful intro … endings, but when the intro is done and you have to play along … here you must use the right instruments otherwise it becomes “cheesy “ 😊 … thanks for sharing

With the advent of the Genos 2, I am in the market for either a used original Genos or at a push I could stretch to a PA5X. I suspect there's no way I will be able to justify the cost of a new Genos 2. Based on other demos, I had been inclining to the Korg. Anyway, I sat down and listened (before reading any of the comments btw) and marked the winners (IMO) of each bit of the demo. To my surprise, the Yamaha won hands down, with the Korg only getting the nod for its cello, piano and pipe organ. It was a little difficult to decide in some categories, as we didn't get like-for-like voices (such as on the strings comparison) and the playing wasn't very idiomatic for the instrument being replicated in many cases. But throughout the experience, it became clear to me is that while some of Korg's basic samples are indeed superior to the Genos, the thing which pushes the Yamaha back to the front time and again is the way the notes connect to each other. Closing your eyes, you are still aware of individual keys being pressed in the melodies, whereas the Genos articulations sound closer to the instrument being replicated. So, mind made up - I will grab a used Genos 1 soon (and save a grand or so into the bargain).

At last, someone opens the demo with a beautiful sound. It is NOT a piano! Most demonstrations play the first half as a piano and then meander into disco beats. Loved the sound of both. On a serious note I hear you on the touch screens, there is a place for them but I think on higher end workstations everything should be tactile and a touch screen should be a secondary route to access thing. That said, on a device like an ipad, korg gadget absolutely out does almost any other workflow I have ever used, and pair it with the nanokeystudio bluetooth midi controller and a backpack , I would have that over most other gear. Certainly if I had to create a piece of music with any precision. And this applies to any genre, not just “disco”.

You are so very correct. So many people come onto these comments and ramble about things when their playing skills really create a near impossibility to adequately evaluate the instrument they are playing. Almost every pro player will tell you the same exact thing. In this day and age, you will go with who sponsors you. If you don't have a sponsor, any of these keyboards will work because their skill set makes them shine and appear better to listening ears.

err no they won't. The instrument sampling is way way way better on the Genos. You can't play your way to a more realistic sound. I have good ears for accurate instrument sounds. Korg is way newer than the Yamaha so they had loads of time to make a decent tool. Wait till the new Genos arrives. Yamaha are the leaders in sound and creation. Go figure.

err yes they will. The instrument sampling is close enough that nobody in a typical audience will know the difference. You can play yourself to a more realistic sound. I have good ears for everything. Korg may be newer than Yamaha, but that doesn’t mean they can’t, and haven’t, made a good tool. By all means wait for the new Genos to arrive, won’t be long. The PA5x is not bad, but it has by no means caught up with the older and better Genos. Some sounds are quite good on the Korg, given that it is a PA home series of arrangers; however, overall seen and heard, Genos is still the most desirable arranger/workstation precisely because of its perfection, innovation and genius from about 5 years ago.

I had owned Yamaha keyboards from the 80's... I even moved to Kenwood... But with Korg, the sound is Raw... its not softened or dampened like the Yamaha.... Which is a shame for such performance keyboards, though through the 80's the DX7s was a synth to reckon with... but then the Korg M1 was a game changer.... For me, for a more softer, dampened experience, Yamaha will deliver... Though for Korg, the sounds are richer, my dynamic and raw to their natural self.

Hi, it's a fun video, basically, this type of comparison between two devices that have the ability to process sound is completely wrong, and the creation of sound in these types of professional devices depends on the ability and skill of the user or musician, but in the case of Yamaha in the categories Like Genus or SX, there is a rule that sells the device with raw effects to the user so that the user can create the sound in his own style and preference, but by default, Korg makes changes to the sound as much as possible, that's why in the competition market, because Korg installs the processed sounds on the device, most of the musicians tend to use Korg, while Yamaha is a sound pack manufacturer, by selling and installing the pack on the Yamaha instrument, it creates a transformation that is absolutely amazing.🌹

I owned a pa4x and then decided to exchange for Genos after 3 years even I prefer the pa4x semi weight keys , the Genos keys are a bit lighter .Now after listen to many Pa5x Demo including your demo , I think in general Korg pa4x and pa5x sound output are the same , it sound like we have to lower the bass and raise the treble a bit with the equalizer section ( that's why it sound a bit synthetic as many mentioned ) . On the other hand , Genos sound clearer and spacial . Personally the only thing I miss my Korg is Genos does NOT have 4 separate Fill In or a programable buttons for Fill In 1 to 4 , sometimes I played with Variation 4 but I wanted to use fill in #1 repeatedly , I have to press Var 1 and quickly press Var 4 again so the rhythm still stay at Var 4 !!!..... this is tiresome :). Secondly , with Genos I can NOT create Combo sound and store in separate library and call up QUICKLY at anytime later . The only thing I can do is store in 10 registration memory and store in registration in memory bank . If I play on stage as one-man band , by the time I found a particular combo sound ( registration ) to do a solo part , the singer would have finished his/her song and ready for the next , LOL ..... Anyway , good Demo , sir ! 👍👍👍

Korg sounds good. Add a volume pedal to your solo split and it will add a lot more realism. A lot of the time, if you play like the instrument you are trying to emulate it will sound much more real just because you are copying the type of dynamics of the instrument itself. The power of an expression/volume pedal is enormous.

As a Genos owner (and previously a pa4x owner) i think the pa5x shows his strength even more in the style department, not only better arrangements, but also a much better overal sound. The pa5x also picked up in the acoustic department and the new DNC sounds are finally on par with the sa2 sounds in Genos. Where it comes to functionality, the pa4x wins all over… better keybed, much better panel, tiltable screen, keyboardsets, dual styles.. they also finally adapted the file system Yamaha uses…. The only thing Genos has going is its performance memories, they are so flexible..korg should add this to the pa5x, by adding up to 16 performance memmories for each songbook entry, and using the matrix or the buttons under the small screen to controll them

The transition from one sound to another when playing is much smoother on the Korg. This is a huge dealbreaker on the Yamaha. Genos is clearly an older generation workstation. It has nothing to do with preference; it's all about quality of sound and styles and what is expected of a modern keyboard. Standards have gone up since Genos has been launched...

For people that are going to say 'oh but the Korg Pa5x doesn't bring anything new to the table', it's obvious that Korg took inspiration from not only the Yamaha Genos keyboards in terms of the LED strip on the front panel as well as the UI elements, but also the Roland Fantom series with it's pads (which are called Matrix pads on the Pa5x) and sounds from not only the Nautilus but their previous flagship the Kronos and SV-2 I believe (but feel free to quote me). Yes it may not be anything 'new', but to me, who cares. Not sure about the Pa4x because I've never owned one, but it's MILES better than the Pa3x which I DO still have and am seriously thinking about upgrading to the Pa5x.

There are certain sounds which are more realitic on the korg pa5x. But what does it count, when they don't fit nicely into an arrangement? The Genos has a sound character where all sounds complement each other. And that's what you need if you want an arranger keyboard. You do not play sounds solo. You play them together.

Given that the Genos is now 5 years old, it's amazing that it can still stand against the latest Korg's flagship model. Even certain sounds and accompaniments are better on the Yamaha IMO. They really did a great job work with the Genos, and it made the competition struggle just to try to be on a par.
The PA5X seems really good, but I don't plan to get rid of my Genos, at least in the short term.
BTW, in the panflute sound demo it would have been much better to use the new sound of the 2.0 update, instead of the "stock" panflute sound which is there at least since the PSR-9000, even before the Tyros.

Think Korg have made a big move here. They are getting close on the Genos. Their articulations have become much better than befor and a few of the voices are slightly better sounding. Really A nice board. Too bad it only got 61 keys. The orchestral sounds still can use some refinement. Just shows how leading Yamaha have been ever since they introduced the SA Sounds in the Tyros line, and hands down, even some years have gone, the Genos is still the best arranger board available, and propably also the most expensive apart from Wersi. But I am sure I can find some functions in the Korg if I had it that is better. It just surprices me that Korg have worked much more with enhancing the PA line instead of its top dog, the Kronos r.i.p. and gone with a striipped down version in th Nautilus without aftertouch on any of the models. Korg does some strange things. Is there reAlly a better marked for a premium arranger board than a Premium Workstation ? Why not combine the 2 ? The Genos is a fantastic keyboard, but it also cost a tad more than even the Kronos 2 88. If they don't think there is a market for a big workstation, I can't see why there should be many people that have the money for a Genos.
