  • Tearing Down a Blown Dodge 5.9L 360 V8 Magnum To See Why it Failed this came out of a 1997 dodge ram 1500 pickup truck and the pistons are completely shattered along with several dropped valves broken adjustable roller rockers and metal in the oil pan

    I’d love to see the truck be put pack together in an old school built fashion with some of those old school performance parts and original block(if it’s even salvageable). Either way I’ll enjoy see another old rare truck being put back on the road.keep up the awesome builds👍

    Reminds me of my 67 318 I scattered doing burnouts on the road. During the teardown, I found piston pieces in the lifter valley. Believe it was #5 cylinder, no piston, rod was disintegrated, top of rod looked like a beat up ballpeen hammer. Bottom of rod was hanging on to crank by one bolt. My right foot over rided my brain. Just a few scratches on cylinder wall. Wrist pin was laying in oil pan with middle (pieces) of connecting rod.

    I think it was over wound and ran lean at the same time. I can't imagine it would have ran after the catastrophic event. I'd bet it didn't run. I can't believe you can turn it over. Those cylinder heads may be salvageable. Maybe not. The engine block looks like you could clean it up, but I can't really tell from here. This makes me glad I never slapped a supercharger on my SS/T.

      I think you're right. Revving these over 5k - 5500 RPM is pushing it faster than it was intended to spin. Stock crank is cast,pistons are cast. Cast pistons tend to not handle higher RPMS very well. Somebody probably thought they could get away with pushing it to 6k and.....🌋

    • @GLHS592
      @GLHS592 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Thundarr995 I've seen people rev Magnums to 6000+ rpms. They are just wasting time and fuel. The quit making power somewhere between 5000-5500. I always let the transmission make the decision when to shift.
      Back when my truck was new, I took it to the track to see what it would do bone stock. It ran two 10.33s (1/8 mile) 15 minutes apart. This lady came up to me asking what I had done to my truck. I told her it was brand new and bone stock. She didn't believe me. She had a 1997 Ram 5.9 shortbed with an MP computer, cold air kit, full exhaust, and maybe some other stuff. Her truck was running 10.50s.. She asked me when I was shifting. She was shifting it around 6000 rpms. I told her that I bought a truck with an automatic transmission, so I put it in "D" and let it do its thing. On her next pass, I watched her run a 10.16. She believed me then. She acted like I invented the wheel by telling her to just point and shoot.

  • @JiveFive55

    To much valve float over time causes the springs to get weak and hang up touching those cast pistons which can break them into pieces....

  • @chapmanracing1206
    @chapmanracing1206 ปีที่แล้ว

    My guess is it snapped the valve head off the stem at wide open. That exploded the cast piston and sent it through the rest of the engine causing all the other damage. Only reason to keep the block is to keep it numbers matching if it does have a Vin stamped on it

  • @chevy6794

    Definitely detonation. But it tagged valves too. Piston pieces probably went through the intake and held one open? Or maybe too much boost on stock valve springs and held them open a little too long? Those rockers 1.6 or 1.7? Maybe coil bind? I’d only keep the block if you think those trucks will be valuable enough to warrant it?
