Back then,these games were something totally different for 90s kids.todays kids will never understand the transition from mega drive2 to ps1,it was something truly magical and unique!the wow faces of ps1 generation kids were countless...thanks sony for endless multiplayer hours with our friends!my fav game was metal gear solid 1 by far...

It's funny that in the 90's, my parents thought that this was as far as graphics could go. It still amazes them that unrecord is as detailed as it is.
Jump between PS1 and it's successor was last truly big leap in visual performance.

I remember having the first PlayStation in the Christmas of 94 at the time the only game we had was Ridge Racer. It wasn't officially released in the US until a year later and none of my friends ever heard of it yet. Of course no one believed me and my brother that we had this system that no one else had that took CDs and had "realistic" graphics at our dad's house that lived in a different County that we visited on weekends 😂. His friend he got it from was the type that could get anything on the black market back in the 90's. So explaining how he got it sounded even less believable lol
Can't believe Parasite Eve didn't make this list. It was one of the most memorable PS1 games for me at least. Top 3 were spot on though.
The fact that games like Final Fantasy Tactics, Legend of Legaia, Mega Man X4, Grand Theft Auto 2, and many others didn’t make the list is a testament to how awesome the PS1 was.

Parasite Eve would make my list. It doesn’t hold up in terms of graphics but the mechanics, story, music were all masterfully executed. The fmv were one of the best back in the days.
My top pick would be Vagrant Story. The art style transcends time. The gameplay and story are also excellent. I never liked tactical games but this one is made different.
Parasite Eve is good. Story telling, Fighting system, Gun modify etc. but I feel like this game is not finished and Square just want to sell.

Literally no PS1 game holds up in terms of graphics. So I wouldn't knock Parasite Eve for graphics.
I love unskippable FMVs in my games. They are right up there with QTEs.

The good old days when most game devs had passion for their work and competition between them benefited everyone. Glad to see LOD made the list as well as Xenogears. I also would liked to have seen Parasite Eve in the mix, it being an all time fav of mine. Great vid and commentary, keep it going!

I think it was 2000, I was Final Fantasy 8 guy. My #1 PS1 game of all-times is Metal Gear Solid. I still own and play Syphon Filter 2 sometimes. 2-3 years ago I played Silent Hill (PS1) for the 1st time. I'm right now 34 years old and been playing games since 1994.
Final Fantasy 8 I think is the best game for the entire PS1 era.

I would add Koudelka. A mixture of Final Fantasy 7 and Alone in the Dark with a lot of Lovecraftian elements, on four disks.

My list would include the first Bloody Roars (the only fighting game I could beat my friend at) and Micro Machines -- That just never got old!
Bloody Roar 1&2 are seriously underrated fighting games.
Micro Machines had one of the most unique control setups I’ve seen. It allowed 2 players to share a controller, so with a multitap, up to 8 players could play.

Great video! What about GTA? I loved that game. I haven't played the sequels to completion, but I loved that top down first one. The only other I'd say would be Micro Machines. Hours and hours of fun.

As a veteran of the time I was blown away to see Dino Crisis in this list, it wouldn’t have made my top 60 I don’t think. Enjoyable as a diversion from zombies all the time I suppose, but not an all time great for me.
My favs include Alien Resurrection, Silent Hill, and Loaded, but very few games stand the test of time like Parasite Eve. I can’t imagine how it could be improved.

Chrono Cross is in my personal top 3 for the system.
The one thing you can say about Chrono Cross is that it objectively has the best music of any game in history. Every track is a masterpiece.

SotN is my favorite PS1 game and one of my favorite games of any system. Seeing it at #13 hurt me a little.
Star Ocean 2nd Story is probably my favourite game on the console. Definitely the best RPG on it for me.

Paused at # 8, I have a ps2 Grey slim n found a new addiction in LOD!!! I first found the first disk and couldn't ever find more. Didn't know it was a set of 4, naturally, the hunt intensified. The story, turn of events, maps, spells, attacks, and when u discover your Dragoon Spirits, it turns the game up a few notches!

Legend of Dragoon. RPG w/ Dragon Spirits, attack additions (combos if hot right), turn based, some puzzles, gnarly bosses, n multi-tap magical attacks. Each character has their own attributes: FIRE, WIND, THUNDER, EARTH, WATER, DARKNESS, n LIGHT. One gets sick, another is killed, n "Stardust" to trade. Able to buy items, weapons, Magic, equipment, n is a 4-disc set!!! I'm 45 n STILL play it!! Check it out!!!
FF VIII and FF IX should make a list too

Resident Evil 1, iss soccer 98, Fighting Force and Vigilante 8 could be added. Those were all great games.

Tales of destiny was my first game I played on ps1, my grandma found a copy at a yard sale. Wish I still had that copy. 😢

I had a pre-order on RE2 and was there for the first minute it became available. EB opened their store at midnight for the release. Many of us were queued outside excitedly acting and probably also looking like zombies, waiting for the doors to open. I had come home from work that day at 4pm, took a long nap and then headed to the store about 11pm. Came home about 1am and just had to boot it up straight away. 3 hours later I managed to put the controller down and grab a couple hours sleep before work again in the morning! 😂
One of my favorite games of all time is Vagrant Story, and the gameplay is 100% quicktime events. And yet I never could bring myself to love Legend of Dragoon... because of the quicktime events.
Vagrant Story is my number one favorite game of all time. If Dark Souls had turn-based combat, it would just be a modern Vagrant Story clone. The writing, the interconnected map layout, the methodical combat, the difficulty, the dungeon-crawl feel, the knowledge-based system, the intro cutscene to each big bad, the tension, and a lot more similarities.
That said, Dark Souls Remastered is also one of my favorite games of all time. Man i wish SE just gives us Vagrant Story HD. I still do play Vagrant Story to completion at least once every 1 to 2 years, it isnt that long a game, but it's always a fantastic time everytime i boot it in 1080p resolution with widescreen hacks on my phone with duckstation emulator.
On the topic of PS1 darksouls , check out Kings Field. The game is a From Soft game , it had the stamina bar , different monster types and weapons had different attacking speed and stamina consumption.

I own 7 of these games. All of them are cib. Suikoden 2 is brand new, mint condition. I own Tomb Raider 2, Resident Evil 2, Silent Hill, Dino Crisis, Metal Gear Solid and Tekken 3. Parasite Eve is a hidden gem that deserves more respect.
You need to check out Xenogears. It is often considered by quite a few people to be the greatest game of all time. (the development team went on to make Xenosaga for Namco, and then split off on their own and made Xenoblade Chronicles for the switch)
It was unfortunetely cannibalized by FF8's development, so like FF7 there was cut content that for decades people have wanted to see an update or remastery for it.
Unfortunetely because it came out just before FF8 it's hype cycle was drowned by the release of squares larger RPG.

Doom was brilliant in PS1 with one of the best ambient soundtracks I’ve ever heard. Also the original XCOM port was brilliant (as was Terror From The Deep), although it best played using the PS1 mouse. The new versions aren’t a patch on the original.

How about Tenchu Stealth Assassin's, before MGS came out that year, Tenchu was what I played to get my stealth game hit.

As 17 year old who just got into ps1 collecting, this list helped me a lot.
Ah yes, when you had to have 10 different memory cards, each for their own game type. Learned the hard way not to mix rpg with fighting when my dude just shut off the PS and wiped the bazillion hours of ff7 I had on it because I whooped em on Tekken.... Oh the memories
Is saving games simpler when you play PS1 games on the PS2?
I’m a long way from playing PS1 games as I just started playing PS2 games on a PS2 Fat. But it’s good info for when I get to the PS1 games.
Had to find a save point or complete a level if I remember right. Not sure honestly. That was over 20 years ago. Lol

I would have added Colony Wars and Colony Wars Vengeance, space shooters, great story, multiple paths and endings, great music too.

Final Fantasy 8 is the best FF game there is, a top 5 game of all time in general for me. I don't understand the love affair with FF7 when FF8 is just better lol.

Great list! Final Fantasy VIII was also great. Good story, only downside was the junction system, which was hard to understand (at that time).
The junction system is soooo fun to break. I love replaying ff8 to spend the whole first disk magic farming and turning my characters into unstoppable beasts.

I grew up with the n.e.s. and then the genesis. When I got my Playstation, it was the first time my jaw actually dropped. Playing M.G.S. for the first time, I could not believe what I was seeing.
I can relate. I dabbled with nes, but really started with snes and the genesis. When my Mom noticed how much video games grabbed my attention, she bought a ps1 when it came out. I remember having such disgust for a new gaming system. Like, how dare they. Started playing a few games and was just astonished at the graphics. I put countless hours in to MGS. I remember how well thought out each of the bad guys were. The good ole days.

Final fantasy VII seems to be the default best PS1 / FF game, but FF IX is an excellent game
Those 2 and 10 are best of best final fantasy games. I rate those 3 in a tie.

Final Fantasy VII blew me away when it came out. It is still one of my all-time favorites, and so is the Legend of Dragoon.

What about Grandia, urban chaos, rage racer, S.C.A.R.S, O.D.T, deathtrap dungeon, digimon world (1 and 3) and Xena warrior princess ? I'm sure some people remember these gems.
As an archaeologist, I can confirm that there are far more tombs to be discovered and miss croft will gave no problem falling into another one.

A nostalgia trip for sure ! FF7 is a fantastic game but I really feel like 9(yes you mentioned 9 early 😂) is a superior game in almost every aspect, I myself would put 9 over 7, but that's just me

In technical sense FF9 is superior, but FF7 was needed to show the way and it showed it above and beyond call of duty. It was first Final Fantasy to get full release all over the world, hype was huge and it delivered and more.

@@XxX00LiGhTnInG00XxX Square's previous big hits in sub-genre of JRPG were FF6 (real good game) and Chrono Trigger (masterpiece) so FF7 had to be something unseen to incite any reaction and it was and did. FF9 is more of call-back to 2D-titles in tone and benefited from technical experience two previous entries had given. There even was pondering about it's name. Would it be FF7 or FF4 as there had only been three previous English-translated Final Fantasy-games and what would it be in Europe where series would arrive officially for first time.
Nowadays DOOM looks archaic, but to those who saw it's impact will always have clearer view about it. Games should be judged against their peers - not successors. Against their peers PS1-era Final Fantasy-titles fare truly well.

I agree with parasite eve, definitely not 8 though lol. It's weird, i got 8 right when it came out, all hyped up over it. And my first experience was awed. Until I realized the weapon crafting, junction system, and enemies scaling level along with you. Those 3 things caused me to not enjoy 8 as much as the others. Literally puts it on my list ranking at the very bottom ONLY FF game below it for me is 2. Sad be8i loved the story, exploration, secrets, characters, and summons. Had the game changed those issues to what they usually did, 8 would be right next to 7 for me. Sadly we got what we got 😢
Valkyrie Profile is an unknown gem of the PS1 era. It was one of the last Enix titles before the merger with Squaresoft.

Resident evil, Tomb Raider, and Metal Gear Solid. Those games changed video games forever. They introduced horror, exploration, and stealth.
