  • Did your dog just eat chocolate or something poisonous? In this video, Dr. Justine Lee, veterinary specialist, discusses when to induce vomiting in your dog. There are times when it is incorrect or dangerous to induce vomiting in your dog. When in doubt, contact your veterinarian, your emergency veterinarian, or the non-profit ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at 888-426-4435 for life-saving advice 24/7. If you do induce vomiting, make sure to do so correctly with the right amount of hydrogen peroxide (3%), with recent ingestion, and as long as your dog isn't showing any symptoms of poisoning.
    Dr. Justine Lee, DACVECC, DABT, is the CEO and founder of VETgirl, a subscription-based podcast & webinar service offering online veterinary continuing education. Dr. Lee trained at Cornell University, Angell, and University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Lee has been published in numerous veterinary journals and has authored several veterinary textbooks and book chapters, along with two humorous pet reference books. Be Prepared, the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center does charge for their service.

    • @drjustinelee
      @drjustinelee  6 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Yes, thank you so much for making this clear. It is important to know there are always fees for animal poison control centers (APCC) as they are not state or federally funded the way human poison control centers are. I prefer ASPCA the most, as they are the only NON-PROFIT animal poison control center out there (the others are FOR PROFIT). Also, the guidance that ASPCA APCC provides could actually save you a veterinary visit or an emergency visit if your dog or cat are decontaminated at home, or if they didn't get into a poisonous amount. The $65 fee with ASPCA APCC also provide unlimited follow up for you and your veterinarian to call re: that particular CASE poisoning (e.g., if your dog gets into another poison a month later, that is not included - it would be another case fee, FYI). Thank you!

    Thanks. My dog, black lab, came to me in distress. We have no idea what she got into even after a full house search. But she was stretching her neck out over and over, clearly asking for help. We took her outside and she started eating grass like a horse, not a blade at a time like dogs do, but ripping chunks of grass and eating it as fast as she could (self-medicating). I've never seen a dog do that in all my many years. After a while, she was still chomping grass, we decided as a family to induce vomiting as she had not yet with the grass feeding. (two tablespoons new bottle of hydrogen peroxide) My syringe was for a tooth so it was a very thin curved squirter and hard to squirt much at a time. I did NOT do it like a pro! You made it look much easier, of course. ;) But it was still effective! Over the next 30 min, she vomited at least 3 times and ate some more grass but not as rapidly. It is now the wee hours of the morning, I've been on watch for hours, she seems fine, even chased something in the dark. She was quite thirsty about 40 minutes afterwards, I wasn't sure what the protocol was, so let her decide and she drank two small bowls (one at a time) of fresh water. She wanted to eat, too. Since I planned to stay outback with her for a while, I let her eat her leftover supper. She seems fine. I can sleep now. :) I hope this helps others. A scary thing, wondering if you are watching your dog die. I think I will go give her anther hug. :) Good luck to anyone going through this. I think a turkey baster would have been much easier on both of us.

    I used this for my pom-chi that got into some chocolate truffles. He's less than 20lb and ate at least 4-5 so we were panicking that he had eaten a dangerously toxic amount. Gave him the peroxide as suggested within 10 min and he immediately threw up dark chocolate vomit until he completely emptied his stomach. I watched him closely for signs of aspiration and there was none. (I'm a human dysphagia specialist). We had a scary moment after the first 5 min of vomiting when he looked dazed and kind of staggered and fell over. I felt for his pulse which was very faint and I think maybe he was having a vasovagal response. Thank goodness, with laying him down, close monitoring and a little nutrient gel a while later, he's come out of it fine! Eating, drinking, playing, clear eyed, good mucous membrane color and his heart rate is normal. What a relief! Thank you for the info!

    • @chupacabrita77
      @chupacabrita77 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      And just as an aside, a motivated pom-chi can apparently find it's way into a securely closed tin of chocolate truffles if they're on a surface they can manage to climb to. Lesson learned.

    Your video helped me save my pet from digesting mice and rat poisoning. My pet went to an area that I didn’t think she would go. She digested half of a green small block. I watched her swallow it before I could stop. I went into panic mode. I tried to get her to throw it back up by putting my finger down her throat. Within seconds I went to TH-cam and Goggled
    ‘How to induce vomiting’…. I found your video. I watched quickly and went to the medicine cabinet and retrieved the hydrogen peroxide. I didn’t measure but squirted into her mouth so it went to her stomach. Within a minute or two at max; she vomit her food and the poison up. Three big chunks came up. I was so relieved. After a few bad vomits…I introduced water to her throat with a turkey baster. A day later today I thought I would leave a comment and “Thank You” to you. I live to far from vet hospital and it would have been to late.Again, thank you Dr. Lee for the valuable information. 🙏🏼

    Thank you Dr. Lee, your treatment for inducing vomiting in dogs worked on my golden doodle. I noticed my dog was chewing on something as he walked in the front door, I reached into his mouth and felt two pieces of wood about 1.5 inches (38 mm) long, with a third piece of wood sliding down his throat. I cleared his mouth, and jumped on TH-cam to see how I can get my dog to vomit up the piece of wood I missed. My dog weighs 40 lbs. (18 Kilos), so I gave him three teaspoons of hydrogen peroxide and took him outside, and waited with him until he popped. It took about two minutes before my dog began dry heaving and vomited. I searched his vomit and was relieved to find the piece of wood he eat earlier.

After he finished throwing up (all the food plus a lot of yellow bile) I gave him a little bread to absorb the harsh stomach acids. My dog ate a whole box of chocolate cookies , I gave him 2 tea spoons of peroxide and he threw up, but I was worried that he didn’t throw up everything and I gave him another 1 1/2 tea spoons (he’s about 20 pounds) and now he’s walking around looking exhausted. I don’t know wat to do next

    Thank you so much for your help!!! The dog ate chocolate and coconut cookies from off the table. He did vomit but do I still induce vomiting? And it was food grade hydrogen peroxide right? 3%?

    • @drjustinelee

      It's first aid grade hydrogen peroxide 3%. What you use for skin wounds, etc. and you can find in CVS/Walgreens, etc.

    I gave hydrogen peroxide to my small dog after it ate chocolate. Right after she threw up twice, first time I can see brown which seemed like the chocolate, the second time I could barely see any brown from chocolate. However, right after she also pooped which seemed a bit like diarrhea. Will she be fine? She threw up and pooped almost 5-10 min after eating the chocolate.

    My French Bulldog ate about half of a bowl of my soup. I’m not totally sure what was in it, but it was a middle eastern style lentil soup. Onion and garlic may have been in it. I called my vet and they said “he will probably be fine”... But I’m still really nervous! I know I can’t induce vomiting, because he is brachycephalic. If my vet told me not to worry, should I just keep an eye on him then...?

    • @drjustinelee
      @drjustinelee  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The amount in there is so minimal, I'm not worried at all! Your dog should be fine, but if it makes you feel better, you can call ASPCA APCC - no need to induce vomiting!

      So glad to hear that all went well! Typically, you want to withhold food and water for a few hours as the stomach can be upset. I typically start water in SMALL amounts in 3-5 hours. If they hold this down, I will then offer food (small amounts) 6-8 hours later.

    Thank you so much for this video Dr. Lee! I have been house sitting for my girlfriend and her golden doodle happened to eat a piece of one of his chew toys… Since it was late I thought for sure I was going to have to wait until the morning to help him out, but I used hydrogen peroxide like you advised and it worked like a charm! He got the piece up and I can sleep soundly tonight knowing her pup is gonna be okay!😁

    My dog ate a bunch of compost one day I filled a turkey baster with peroxide, and forced it down his throat he started puking within about 30 seconds, he puked compost that was full of worms and other nasty stuff.
    I also gave him charcoal powder (mixed with water) as this can absorb toxins that are still in his stomach that he failed to puke out.
    He had some crazy bowel movements for a few days but suffered no serious effects.

    5 minutes after I gave her the hydrogen peroxide she threw up the bone. 😃 YEAH! I feel so much better and so does she.
    PS. She has the same eyes and face as your dog, sweet.

    My dog at some leftovers off my plate which included some onion and garlic. Now looking back I realize it was probably not enough to cause harm, but with no transportation since it is 2 AM I cannot get to the Vet so I panicked and administered the peroxide. My dog did not throw up. Should I be panicking more now that he ingested the peroxide and didn’t throw up? What do you recommend at this point? TIA!

    • @drjustinelee

      No, it depends on the size of your dog, but if it's just a small amount of garlic/onions, it's not a big deal. But call them to check as it depends on HOW MUCH.

    Hi, I don't know if I should give this to my dog or not. Maybe I missed part of this. My dog had a couple of grapes on Sunday. It is now Tuesday night. I noticed she started shaking while she was resting this afternoon. She has not had much food since yesterday morning. I'll definitely call my vet in the morning. Thank you for all of the great info.

    • @drjustinelee
      @drjustinelee  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It's way too late to induce vomiting - unfortunately. With any poisoning, the sooner you identify the problem, the less expensive it is to treat and the better. I'd definitely get her to a vet asap for blood work to make sure your dog doesn't have kidney failure from grapes.

    • @thepettetfam4887
      @thepettetfam4887 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Justine Lee Thank you so much for your response!! That's what I thought. I'll get her to the vet in the morning. Luckily, she ate a little more tonight, than she's had since all of this started. She seemed really interested in it. Also, she found a dry chicken bone while we were out walking early this evening. I heard her crunch it up pretty good, before I pulled her away from the area. So when I saw something here that said givng your dog a small amount of food after it eats a bone, it should be fine, ad will poop it out. Thank you for your help.

    If after the second dose and no vomiting, will the H2O2 in his system poison him or can we just monitor his condition? He ate the absorbent pad from the raw meat packaging. Appreciate you responding to your comments. TIA.

      Depending on where you live, some Bufo TOADS (not frogs) are poisonous. If it was recent ingestion and your dog isn't showing any symptoms, you can induce vomiting, but if your dog is already vomiting, drooling, sick, etc. do NOT induce vomiting and get to a vet immediately! If your dog is drooling, I recommend flushing your dog's mouth carefully - get to a veterinarian just in case or when in doubt!

    Hi! Just wanna ask, my 10 month old dachshund who is around 7kgs chewed up a electrical wire/tape. Found a vomit with some chewed up tape, she’s full energy but im getting worried as he is not eating and had to force feed 😔how many tsp should I give him?

    • @drjustinelee
      @drjustinelee  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You shouldn't force feed dogs - if he already vomited, it's not worth inducing MORE vomiting, as he's already symptomatic. I'd get to the vet for an x-ray to see if any is left in his stomach.
