    I laughed when you said, "unless you like lumpy custard". Ever since my parents married my Dad would ask for lumpy custard. My loving mother obliged, for years. When I was about 7 we went to a pot luck supper. My parents had been married, eating lumpy custard, for 17 years when Dad takes a bite of his dessert and exclaims that this dessert, Tapioca Pudding, is the lumpy custard his mother served him as a kid. Our whole family started shrieking with laughter and my mother was finally free to make smooth custard (and tapioca pudding).

    • @Luubelaar
      @Luubelaar 4 ปีที่แล้ว +202

      My friend's mother can't make smooth custard. She just can't. So she just told her kids that it was "banana custard". When you're a kid, you don't know any different. My friend was a teenager before she had actual banana custard and her mother was caught out. LOL

      I think that's an American thing. I don't see British women thinking it's funny to be sexist and call all men pigs, and act like we are all perverts for how we were born. Then act like being a sexist is somehow empowering, and stopping sexism. Pretty sure that takes trump levels of mental dissonance.

    • @happybunnybutt
      @happybunnybutt 4 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      Yes! The best part about sticking the marshmallow into the campfire for s'mores is that the outside gets burned (sometimes too much, and you eat some char... yum...?) just enough so that it is both extreme outer crunchy sugar AND inner liquid-like hot marshmallow. Which is probably more like the whole hot caramel being lava thing, so maybe that bit isn't as totally healthy for the mouth lol

    The broken arm story makes me feel a bit better about my daughter's leg. She had a little fall and told me she thought her leg was broken. I said nah, it's fine. Until it turned very blue and very swollen and I took her to hospital. Turned out her tibia was snapped clean in half. In my defence, this was a week after she bumped her head and told me her head was broken.

    BTW, the water in the smores maker is simply to absorb some energy which could otherwise be reflected back to the microwave magnetron. Basically the water is there because you're pretty much running the microwave empty with just the smores. If you decide to just make your own smores by leaving the top cracker off put a plastic container with water in there, too.

      plastic container is iffy as it depends on the plastic whether or not it is considered microwave safe, but to me is also an unnecessary additional element. You can make the smores thing at home with a normal glass of water and a plate.

    • @thatgirlreacts5465

    The microwave smore's gadget is a clever, but it will never compare to a smore's made over an open fire. The crispy outside of a large marshmallow perfectly golden brown is the best part in my opinion. I definitely recommend using larger marshmallows, mostly since you'll have room to stick the chocolate inside the mallow and because then you'll have more crispy outside to enjoy.

    I do all kinds of microwave mug cooking, not having a stove, and I learned to use large soup mugs for the (very rare for me) cakes just for that reason--room to expand without going over the top of the mug. I've never seen any cake recipe that called for a lid of any kind, so that was quite a surprise to see the fancy little container explode in your microwave (it was funny, too, but only because it wasn't my mess to clean up).

  • @BPonTour

    After High School I did a formal training and lived in a dorm. The rules there said, that we could only have electronic devices for cooking that switched themselves of after a while. In short, I learnd how to cook whole meals in a microwave oven. Here's a recepie that'll work in the microwave:
    1 cup of sugar
    1 1/2 cup of four
    1 tee spoon of baking powder
    2 eggs
    1/2 cup of oil (sun flower or similar)
    1/2 cup of selters/bonaqua or similar
    you can flavor the cake by adding
    coca powder (1 table spoon)
    vanilla extract
    once you've got a feeling for this runny mixture you cann add other flavorings such as apple, mandarin, cherrys or mix it up and make it taste like orange using Fanta instead of carbonated water and grated orange peel plus chocolate drops. There's literally no limit to creativity. Depending on how much liquid you add, you might have to increase the amount of flour. This normaly bakes in an oven at 180°C for roughly 20 to 30 minutes with the fan on. Bakingtime increases to at least 40 minutes if you doubble the amount for the dough.
    If you do it in a microwave, be aware that it raises up to twice it size while the microwaves are heating it, so you need a pretty large bowl. It also needs to be heated until hardly any more steam raises and split into at least 2 phases to let some of the steam out of the micowave. It's somewhat dry once it's fully cooked, but if you bake it normally it's a really fluffy, fast, and easy cake.

    The plastic pineapple cutter works just as well as the metal one if you don't push it down while turning it. The spiral cutter will pull the gadget down as you turn it. And you have to make sure you cut the top off to make it as level as possible before using the gadget. I have one and use it all the time.
    And I'm a new subscriber. Great channel.

    • @johanneshalberstadt3663
      @johanneshalberstadt3663 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's not my experience. I use the plastic pineapple cutter, too, but I find I do have to push it down while turning, otherwise the fruit give too much resistance and i end up only scapinge the surface, making paperthin spirals, that rip and mush. You have to adjust the pressure. May be it depends on the model. But yeah, it does work and O use it with every pineapple, too.
      And yes, I think part of the problem in the video was, that Anne had the smaller pine apple so the the opening at the top wasn't wide enough. She was partly cutting into the peel/shell/rind (sorry, I don't know the correct English term), which is very tough and stopped the gadget. So, she had a double disadvantage: smaller pineapple and less sharp plastic gadget. @HowToCookThat Try it again with a bigger pineapple and the top cut off to make a wide enough opening, so you don't cut into the rind and it will work.

    True s’mores rare best with toasted marshmallows. If you’re at a campfire, you toast one on a stick, then get your first cracker and chocolate, put the marshmallow on top, put the other cracker on top and press the crackers together so you can pull it off the stick. The heat will help melt the chocolate, although not as thoroughly as in the microwave.
    In my opinion, this is the most “accurate“ way to do it.
    If you have a gas burner on your stove, I’ve known people who use that to toast marshmallows. That way you don’t have to wait for a campfire.

My mother has a very similar one except it's is powerful enough to virbate and stir even in the fairly dense porridge she eats for breakfast. I wouldn't recommend it to most people but if you're struggling with stirring manually because of poor health or old age (like my mother) a good electric sitrrer can be a very useful tool.

      It’s more fun to make s’mores from a campfire so honestly, the s’mores maker is a big never for me

    To truly enjoy a S'more, you need them toasted on a fire.

      but that's a good alternative for people who dn't have access to fire. Like me, living in a city in a block of apartments.

      @@Xia-hu rental living alternatives. You can use a grill, or even a gas stove. There's nothing like toasting over an open bonfire, as an experience, but that toasted flavor can be achieved even with a larger candle. (Unless you're using the birthday cake of an older friend/relative, I don't suggest birthday candles. 😘😂)
      I nuke (aka microwave) s'mores all the time. Still yummy, and super fast. But always missing that toasted flavor and texture.
      Not sure if they have the equivalent in Australia or not. You can replace the graham crackers with fudge stripe cookies. This gives you the chocolate and graham in one. And you can experiment with chocolate candies (I love using caramel filled ones, or Reese's Peanut Butter Cups. But whatever is your personal favorite. Marshmallow filled would probably work if microwaved too. Some of those even have a graham cookie base.) It's fun to make "gourmet s'mores" to change things up. Great for party s'mores.

    I'm glad that the smores thing works but I think it is sad as hell that your first smore ever came out of the microwave.

      With s'mores, how can anyone tell the difference? They're utterly disgusting and gross, no matter how they're made! To be fair, I suppose, I should state that I've never met a marshmallow worth eating, and graham crackers are nothing more than sand held together with glue.
