Olympus Mju, Why People Care About It

  • The Olympus Mju series of cameras gets a lot of lip service and spilled ink for moderately priced compact 35mm cameras from the 90s. Why?

@@hazmi1639 What do you want to do with it? I have cameras ranging from a 100 years ago to 2019. For digital stuff I kinda recommend stuff like the Canon G11 (G12 has some upgrades that make it a bit more reliable than the G11) or equivalent-ish cameras from brands like Nikon, Olympus, Ricoh, Fuji, etc. Don't get hung up on specs. Make sure that, if you are looking to get good at photography, you'll want to have a camera that offers a full manual mode. Learn how to do "zone focusing" (applies to any fully manual camera, so it is a great skill to develope) and guidelines like the "sunny 16 rule" (and research those applying to other types of weather).
For analog stuff, if you want an SLR, I would settle for a Canon EOS 300 (or whatever they are called in the US). Sure, they are plasticy and feel cheap but can be a great starter as long as the displays aren't rotted (I have two as backups for my EOS 1n which is kind of my beast for fine art photography, but good luck finding one of those that doesn't break the bank). Another option, if you're in Europe, is to get a Praktica or another M42 mount camera. Lots of great glass and options for that format.
For something more compact, you could try for a Konica C35, Olympus Trip, Olympus Pen EE (or alternatives), or try finding alternatives to that. There are more then enough point and shoot options but you'll just have to look on whatever marketplace you have access to and then do the research based on the type of stuff that looks appealing.
Or, you could blow all caution to the wind and get a Yashica 124G because you want people to ask you what the hell that thing you're carrying is.

I’m so lucky to buy a limited edition Olympus Mju II/Stylus Epic for $3.99 back in 2017. These were already worth over $300-400 if you can find one.

If anything it just goes to show the time is ripe for companies to start releasing film point and shoots again. Imagine a little plastic point and shoot with today's material science and electronics. It would be right up there with the very best of yesteryear

Really well explained, I think there is one more reason people are buying them like crazy. You can't argue that the lens its self is better than most cameras in the same category.

What I love about these little camera's is that they are small, light and still bring a full-frame to the party. Recently a woman just left one at the counter and hasn't left my side yet. Love it!

Good video. I bought my Mju-II around 2003. I think the key thing with these 1990s autofocus cameras is that you trust them to get more or less what you expect and that the result, while unpredictable sometimes, will be good enough and sometimes far beyond that. Whereas with digital cameras, you want to get what you can see and if you don’t then it’s a fail. Our standards for film cameras were lower. Also, if someone said “come on a road trip and bring just one camera”, I’d have trouble choosing between digital cameras. If I could only bring a film camera, I’d bring the Mju and I’d be very comfortable with that choice.

I’ve always loved it. Took some nice pics through the years. But a big part of its charm is that it was cheap. I bought two, brand new, for $170. It’s not super sharp but still sharp enough. My only pet peeve is that it’s soft on edges and there is noticeable vignetting.

I've owned a mju ii and a Stylus Zoom. The mju ii was great until it stopped working, and was a tremendous travel companion. The Zoom, on the other hand, just kind of sucked. I like flare, but anything even remotely shot with the sun from 90 degrees to the front suffered from a ring of fire on the images that would've made Johnny Cash proud.

I appreciate your attempt to make an analysis but I think you're stretching it.
The reason film compact cameras got popular is because they were cheap and people's intention of taking pictures nowadays is to post them on Instagram or somewhere lol. If that's all you want to do then yes you can get away not tinkering with exposure, white balance, etc.
Besides, snapshot have been the status quo among non-photographers for 30-40 years now. So the issue isn't photography getting too technical but getting too dumbed-down. Thus it's hardly a counter-reaction. It's the same thing that people have always been doing. Film compact cameras got popular because they're new for many of the young snapshooters to do what they've always been doing. That's it. There's nothing meaningful or thoughtful behind it all.

Gear hype is the worst thing about photography. I am just as capable of taking bad photos with a good camera as I am with a bad one. However, I don't get why any of the big brands don't see this insane market for clicky-picture-from-a-black-box and come up with a super cheap to make design for a new point-and-shoot now. Slap the number 2.8 on there and you can basically charge whatever you like.

  • @randallstewart175

In summary, the Mju is a flimsy, plastic point-n-shoot with modest optics. It is no better, and in many cases worse that dozens of other cameras of ts type and age. Like a few other cameras, it's absurd used price and general popularity is a fad or cult driven by social media by people who mostly no nothing about the subject and are just ignorantly passing along something they heard in earlier social media. The Olympus XA is a earlier camera which has a similar popularity and price with nothing material to support it.

Basically, it boils down to someone like Scarlett Johanssen or Jessica Alba having one and hyping it up on a late night show. That and so called "influencers", who basically take their cue off the celebrities, anyway. So, either guys who have the hots for celeb women (and buy the camera because of that) and/or idiots who have no idea of what they're talking about conning gullible people into parting with way more cash than they should normally be willing to do.

I have a Mju Zoom Wide 80 and. I LOVE it. At the time I bought it I was a long-time owner of Olympus SLRs (I have or have had an OM-1, OM-1n, OM-2n and OM-4Ti) but needed an even smaller, discrete camera for travelling (from ski-mountaineering in Japan, hot-air balloon festivals in New Zealand and hiking the Tasmanian rainforests in Australia).
At first I was a little dubious as to how it would perform compared to its big brothers, but as soon as I saw the first results it blew me away (just as long as you don't use the zoom at maximum magnification , as the image quality does suffer a little then). I religiously use slide film - 100 in the daytime and 400 at night - and when people see the images they usually wouldn't believe they weren't taken with the SLRs.
Although it is so simple to use it also has some really cool features - focus and exposure lock, spot metering, weatherproof, and at night time, two second shutter speed (it also has date/time imprinting, but I don't think I've ever used this). Honestly, if you're looking for a point and click film camera, or one that is small and discrete, that is nearly guaranteed to deliver GREAT results, I wouldn't consider anything but an Olympus Mju.

Film's dynamic range is way better than digital. You can take 4 stop over exposed photos on film and it will turn out usable but not with digital slr.
