I totally thought that too. He saw the dude do it and then was like “I wanna do that” dad said no, and he said yeah dad watch this and died. Haha. What a boss. He is going to be such a good boarder.
@@i_skate2578 any tips on improving faster? i’ve only went out one day so far and it could definitely be worse but i do a lot of intentional falling bc im scared im going to slide off into the trees or not be able to stop
Don’t have any kids yet but I know that first scene where he’s heel sliding down made you so proud as a dad. I can’t even imagine. I was watching it with the biggest smile on my face go Roman!!!! Good job dad!
OMG - Roman's slam recovery was the cutest. I wish I could have had the chance to wail and cry and it being ok (not okay for a 40+ year old adult). I'll remember the "don't eat it unless it's pizza" line forever! You're a great dad, keep up the awesome content.
YES!!!! That mentality as a parent these days is so rare. We all seem so concerned with safety, which is an important topic, but no one will ever make it out of this life alive or without scars. And kids should understand their own mortality as much as kids can without actual risk to their life. I applaud your parenting style.
Ouch poor little dude, so tough tho and he still wanted to snowboard! Way to go Roman! I was there with my son when he scorpioned, I’m glad he’s still trying things. We can’t shield them from everything. Good job out there dad!!!
I was born in the mid-‘70s. Grew up in the ‘80s. I distinctly remember learning to ride my cousins 2 wheeler bike (no training wheels) at their house which was “on base” as their dad was Air Force. I fell into the same damn rose bush a dozen times. 😂 BUT… that 13th time…. I made it around the block. Kids definitely need to be put into situations where they have the opportunity to crash so they learn to get up. Well done to your son.
Loved seeing Roman shredding. He is getting so good!! 💖 What fun for you and him having this special time together!💞So fun seeing all the family at the mountain.
Love your lessons about failure. It’s so important to teach that failure is an integral part to the learning process and that it shouldn’t warrant punishment.
Johnathan this content is the cutest! I think you're interactions with your son are fantastic and you're content on building him up strong is very thoughtful. Love watching these videos with Roman and happy to see he loves the camera. Keep on having fun!!
i live in Australia and our ski season is about to start, so its so crazy to me that you guys are still going until the end of the month. you have a crazy long season
I can't wait to have kids and teach then to snowboard and these videos give me major baby fever. Great videos, hopefully I can meet you on the slopes next season.
It’s so nice seeing the whole family out man, definitely felt those slams and the look he gave u was the funniest thing, love a gd Roman video, keep up the great work dude 🤘
The amount of times I've slammed I know what to look for in the snow, the conditions, time of day you're most vulnerable, etc. Always nervous for the chipmunk where you're the most tired and body is relaxed. You're setup for the epic slam
I think the topic with the restraining bar is maybe just a think in the US. In Europe (Austria, Switzerland) you can barely see anyone, who has the bar not closed. I personally think, that the bar is a really good think and that you should Roman get used to a closed bar, so that he will also do it in the future.
I'm not from the US, so I could be wrong. But, watching these videos, I feel like many people in the US are self taught. While in france, most people went through ski / snowboarding school at least 1 or 2 years to get the basics of a proper technique. And at ski school, they always make you put the bar down. So it's just a habit at this point, you get in, get comfy and then put the bar down. Which could explain why it's not a topic here
Please keep this kind of enthusiasm and support throughout his life. It impacts the kid so much and that kind of support and love is ALL he needs. All those life lessons your teaching him now are so valuable, so much more than it may seem. Keep up the great work. Your an incredible boarder and more importantly a leader for your son
I love how you always do great job of encouraging him and making it fun for him its really hard to get the little ones out there unless your doing it like this
Been skiing and riding since 1982. Never fell off a chair lift (jumped off one or two) and don't know anyone who has. I have seen plenty of people forget to put the bar up, though. I use the bar to give my feet/legs a rest. Love the Roman vids. He'll grow up not remembering a time when he didn't snowboard. It will be a part of his life forever and is such a natural and wholesome activity. Good job, Dad. Taught my daughter (28) and my son (22) how to ski and ride when they were 3. Both still put in about 50 days a year.
When i first started skiing i used to put the bar down but once i got more confident and my ability blossomed, i found the bar to be more of a hindrance. If i was riding solo on a lift the bar usually stayed up, if i was with others who weren't as comfortable as me, i let them decide. My mother on the other hand wasn't a strong skier and neither was my sister so when we would go as a family, my mom would pester me whereas my dad was just impressed that i didn't care lol
I know this is an old video I’m just coming across your channel for a couple days now and this is so amazing I promise you he’s gonna remember these moments for the rest of his life !
Keeping the bar up seems like an American thing. I have been Skiing for 33 years in Canada, always put the bar down and most people do as well. Some resorts enforce putting it down. With my young kids I like when there is a handle that can go between their legs. I don't think it really matters, but does seem like a worthwhile safety feature.
Being a skier, if it is a long lift ride, I will put the bar down so I can rest my skis on the little crossbar. It relieves pressure off my knees. But I don't feel like it is necessary for safety.
You must be one proud dad! Roman is doing awesome!! I can totally relate to those awkward high-five moments. I have been there many times with my daughter...so funny!
Bar up in the Midwest. Bar down when out west. That's how we usually do it. Partly due to the length of time on the chairlift and most of the Midwest lifts aren't high speed detachables.
My dad used to be sponsored skier until he broke his back ending his career, since then I was never allowed to snowboard or ski until I turned 18. I went for the first time a few days ago and I’m very butt hurt I wasn’t able to start younger so seeing this makes me superrr happy.
I dont want to have kids but im glad people like this are having goods when im old af there's still people keeping this lifestyle alive !!!! Keep riding Lil Ro !!!! Also that crash on the bike was tough dude I had one like that as a kid !!
If I wasn't trying to pay for my own kids college fund, I'd buy two of those stickers. My first year skiing AND trying to teach my kids, and you crush it! Keep it up man!
Man Roman is too cute bro. I’ve been dying to get my boys out but they grow like weeds so it’s a fortune on gear outside of normal rentals. On the bar subject, I make the people riding with me put it down 😂😂😂. I use it to lean and rest on. Has nothing to do with keeping me safe, I just get winded at my age quickly lol
I normally put the bar down. However I also ride with a backpack. I'll lean forward and rest on the bar so I don't have to take my pack off or push my back into the lift. Have had a few times where I leaned forward because I was used to having a bar and didn't so that was scary. Been riding for 17 years. Just what I'm used to
As far as letting Roman slam, that’s called being a good dad. Part of our job as dads is raising our kids to be tough, strong, and resilient. This is a part of that.
i taught my kids to board ,now theyre grown up we have 1 week a year on the snow every year its a great way to bond again as they all left home and we dont see much of each other apart from phone time
In the resorts where I ski, which are in europe, the bar on a chairlift always goes down, and once down, you can't open it until you arrived at the terminal

My dad taught me young to eat it! He threw me on a skateboard and we'd ride, and every time I fell he'd tell me to get back on. He never let me quit until I tried again. He taught me I could cry all I wanted and I was going to keep trying, that pain wasn't going to scare me. Now when I snowboard I eat it all the time and have to get back up. You have a tough kid on your hands and I am glad when he fell you had him try again instead of being scared and never letting him touch the board again
you have to let them get hurt, eat dirt and just be kids...our job is to comfort!! extreme sport parents never want thier child hurt, but that smile when they accomplish each tiny step, makes every cut bang bump or bruise worth every tear!! youre a great Dad!!
In Germany and Austria you have to put the bar down. So that's probably why some people are saying something. It's quite weird to us not putting the bar down. But I agree you could still fall out with the bar down. Especially with that kind of bar in the video. Helloo from Germany and I really enjoye watching Roman doing so great at snowboarding
Great job!!! Just took my 7 yr old for the first time, had to show him people fall ALL OVER the place, its not a big deal just dust yourself off and keep playing!
I get leg twitches from time to time so I like the bar for that, but I mainly use it so that if I'm trying to manipulate something like my phone or food and I drop it I don't accidentally lunge forward to try to recover it. I get your point about a bar without the leg divider thing being a bit of an illusion of safety that could be counterproductive, particularly for small kids. The style of chairlift seat you're in for that segment is also a lot more angled and deeper than some older chairs, particularly old doubles.
You should 100% put the bar down, if the chairlift stops abruptly people (and less experienced riders in particular) can slide off without anything to hold on to. And even though you feel like you don't need it, you're setting an example for the people who DO need it. You probably don't need a helmet while snowboarding with your kid either, but you still use it.
