Agree, Jonathan made it look really easy. No fear of the mountain or falling and trust in his body. My son easily crossed over to the dark side (skier to boarder) and said how easy the transition was. However he tried to go back to skiing, just for fun and said how hard it was. Next I want to see Jonathan trying to board with one on each foot. He would probably make that look easy too.

How I learned to ski almost 30 years ago:
*Be a fresh faced 23 yr old Florida boy who has never seen snow or a mountain.
    *Move to Colorado
*Have some friends who already know how to ski
*Go to Copper Mtn with them
*Wear plastic rain pants and sweats because you don't have any proper snow gear
    *Rent skis, boots, etc.
*Let them talk you into riding directly to the top of the mountain
*Fall on your face at the top of the lift
    * Listen to "friends" say, Just follow the green signs
*Watch them laugh and schuss away
*Make it to the lodge 4 hours later, soaked in sweat and completely exhausted
*Drink a lot and decide to try it again next weekend
    *Repeat

I grew up skiing, and switched to a board when I was 19. I taught both for years on several different mountains, (AASI & PSIA certified), and I feel like skiing is easier to learn the basics but harder to be good at, whereas snowboarding is hard to learn the basics but easy to progress at. The body mechanics are a little more complicated on skis. After you learn that your body should work as "one," starting at the bottom, on a snowboard, it's easy to get really good at!

As difficult and uncomfortable it appeared just think of the result if I were teaching. He would spend a good 15 minutes gertting orientd to equipment, doing static exercises to introduce skills use flat land to develop movement, walking, gliding ,skating. Develop a sense of turning before using lifts either wedge turns or step turning get you on and off lifts safely every time. Imaging the different posture on that first run instead of awkwardly bent at the waist defensively crouched legs in agony, having a taller stance where feet are active beneath the body, stance controls skis with ankle's flexed, legs long weight bearing surfaces in all joints are in nominal load bearing positions= standing up. On our first run I am confident we would be demonstrating parallel christy turns. After a few runs we would be exploring carving, turn shaping, considering his athleticism and experience in competition prepare for intermediate skiing mountain exploration, mileage. Sad to see a pro going through the school of hard knocks... good slapstick though.

For any of you new skiers out there, something that I didn't understand and couldn't grasp was how to turn without snowplowing while thinking about putting more pressure on one foot than the other. Until I followed behind my brother and realized the key to turning is in the initiation. What worked for me was watching my friend turn and noticed that if you want to turn right you slightly offset your right foot forward and slide your left foot back which naturally rotates your hips and gets you moving right. The same idea to go left, move your left foot slightly forward and slide your right foot back to rotate your hips, and start moving left. Also, BEND those knees a little bit, it helps you turn and stop. No stiff planks flying down the mountain. Stopping is as easy as performing an exaggerated turn using the same technique, which wouldn't you know it, is the beginning to a hockey stop.

I’ve skied since age 10, now age 78. Yup that dates me to before release bindings. I’ve never snow boarded. I taught skiing for a number of years as well. It is obvious that you are in great shape, that your snow boarding experience gives you a natural understanding of edge control for speed and direction control. It’s also clear that weighting on a board vs. skis is much different. For the first day out you did very well and all your related experience should get you into full parallel skiing with just a few more hours of practice. An instructor could put a lot of polish on your style in an hour or two. I hope you keep at it and come over from the dark side to stay in the light now that you’ve experienced it! 😎⛷

Small tip for getting on lifts: keep your poles in one hand. I usually do right as I prefer to load on the left side of chairs. Wait for the chair to tap your legs to sit.
Also, I recommend learning to keep your skis parallel before leaving the bunny hill if you are a teen/adult learning. The faster you can learn to control your skis, the easier it is to unlearn the snowplow method, which is a hinderance beyond bunny hill skiing. Learn to flatten and dig the edges of the skis, and once you are comfortable with both, start making turns. Once you can make it down the bunny hill with no snowplowing three times, you are ready for the larger runs.
If you need to fall, fall up the hill if you can. Most injuries on-piste I've seen occur when you do not fall up the hill. Keep in mind falling down the hill will hit you harder. You should learn this before you make a single "pizza, french fry" exercise.
Also, the most important tip: keep it fun!

It’s incredible no matter how good a person is at skiing, going from skis to snowboard is truly a starting all over experience.
I can’t speak for ‘native’ snowboarders trying skiing but it appears to be similarly a humbling experience.
As a skier myself, after trying the snowboard thing once, I have no desire to do it again. Lolz.

As a snowboarder who picked up skiing to become a kids ski instructor, the key is trying to keep your upper body quiet. Standing straight with knees slightly bent. As a boarder we have our bodies moving all kinds of different ways, in skiing its all about the power in legs. Definitely would like to see more videos to see your progress on skis.

  • @bartd94

As someone who started as a skier turned snowboarder, much is different but a lot stays the same.
Coming up before a turn and lowering yourself for instance is something lots of people fail to understand when starting both these sports. (this gives you a better body position and will smoothen the ride).
The weird thing about skiing is that your feet are both moving, a thing to watch out for is not crossing them over each other.
Last thing you must understand while skiing is that you only put weight on the ski that's the closest to the bottom of the slope. A good exercise while going across the mountain is to just try and lift your top foot up.
    Hope it helps!

    Hey Johnathan,
Really great skiing for a first day! I am very impressed how you put weight on the outside ski in the middle and end of a turn. This is something, that beginner skiers normally cannot accomplish immediately.
I noticed, that you generally need to shift your weight more forward to gain more control. In the video I've seen additionaly a few situations where you get "stuck" in a turn and go across the whole ski run. There you need to actively put weight on the front of your new outside ski so you can initiate the next turn. If you manage this, skiing will hopefully be less scary, as you fully control the ski.

Tips for learning how to ski: always lean downhill and make sure your shins are always pressed into the front of your boot.
“Sit on the barstool”; always keep your knees bent like your about to sit.
When you’re standing still, lift one ski off the ground and put it back. Then do the same with the other ski.
It will help you feel more stable.
As you are traversing in a wedge, slowly move the downhill ski parallel to your uphill ski.
Always put your weight on the downhill ski.
When you are on flat terrain, pretend like you are on ice skates sliding one ski then the other.

Tip for those who've never skied: If you don't want to spend $150 on your first day of skiing just to ride the bunny hill, learn to ice skate first. The principles are so similar (two sets of parallel blades to guide forward momentum) except on skis your blades are longer and the terrain is 3-D vs a 2-D plane. Learn to balance, turn, and hockey stop on skates and you'll be skiing blues on day 1 on the mountain.
