    Master of Puppets, the album, is part of the Library of Congress National Recording Registry. The Library of Congress added the album in 2015, making it the first heavy metal album to be preserved in the registry.
    The Library of Congress considers the album to be culturally, historically, and aesthetically significant.
    It is considered a benchmark for other metal albums and considered one of the most representative albums of its genre

    and it gets even heavier with Slayer. Love Metal.

    It honestly took me about four years to get Thrash Metal. In the 80's I was into the Scorpions, Judas Priest & Iron Maiden. Thrash was something different and very raw when it came out. The first time I heard Master of Puppets, I felt like someone took me by the collar and threw me against the wall. That how hard and heavy it felt. 2 years after this a;bum came out, I started to get it, and this entire "Master of Puppets" album is a masterpiece. I would love to them live, but I am not going into a football stadium to see them. If they ever do inside arena's again, I'll be there.

    They are playing what is called Power Chords. Metallica's riff writing is legendary! The first metal I ever heard was Metallica's first album called Kill em All. This is why many of us say songs these days are so lazy. This song has like 6 different parts to it but it is all one giant AMAZING song! This is what inspired so many of the musicians you hear today! You should REALLY react to Metallica - One (Music Video)

    @NicholasPellow 3 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

    He's playing 'Power Chords' - they are based on full chords but you only play 2-3 strings of the full chord and you therefore can strike the strings very quickly.

    • @seanmurphy637
      @seanmurphy637 3 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Also, when playing with a lot of distortion you cannot play a full chord because it just becomes a total distorted mess.

    That's pretty much how the band was back then. You can pick anything from their first four records and it's all intense like that. Their fifth record is good, too, but it's different; that's their most famous work (The Black Album). I'm sure at least some of the songs you know are from that one. "Enter Sandman" comes to mind.
    Maybe check out "Fade to Black" next 🙂

    This song is all about drugs and addiction. This is the topic they're doing with the whole album. In this song, the Master is drugs and "puppets" are the users.
    Why the song is significant:
    Open discussion: The song doesn't shy away from the problems caused by drugs but describes them in a raw and honest way.
    Metaphor: Drugs are used as a metaphor, making the song more universal and relatable. It can represent any addiction, be it drugs, money, power, or something else.
    Impact: The song has had a massive cultural impact and is one of the most famous songs in heavy metal music. It has also sparked discussions about drug use and its effects.
    Why this causes discussion:
    Art vs. reality: Some see the song as a realistic portrayal of the effects of drugs, while others feel it is too romanticized.
    Responsibility: Does an artist have a responsibility for how their work affects listeners? Can a song about drugs normalize drug use?
    Other Metallica songs and drugs:
    James Hetfield's experiences: Metallica's lead singer, James Hetfield, has gone through a difficult battle with alcohol addiction. His experiences have also been reflected in the band's other songs.
    Interpretations of lyrics: Metallica's lyrics are often multifaceted, and their interpretations can vary from listener to listener.
    Summary:
    Master of Puppets is a powerful and multifaceted song that addresses drug use and addiction. It has sparked much discussion and remains one of the most significant works in metal music.

    Metallica were clearly the best of the thrash metal bands that emerged in the early 80's w/ their debut album "Kill 'em all"... They had songs that stood out better than their peers, bands like Exodus... Anthrax... Slayer ... etc. One of their best additions was bassist Cliff Burton, who was a schooled musician; Burton was the one who taught James Hetfield (guitar/ vocals) about melodies... and drummer Lars Ulrich about musical arrangements... Also, they had the talent of Dave Mustaine, their lead guitarist who helped write their early songs; he was fired in 1983 and replaced by Kirk Hammett (lead guitar) but Mustaine formed Megadeth soon after and showed his songwriting skills w/ that band.
    It was tragic losing bassist Cliff Burton; he was killed in a tour bus accident in 1986... and Metallica could not replicate what they were doing on their first 3 albums ("Kill 'em all"... 'Ride the Lightning" ... and 'Master of Puppets')
    Some of their most popular songs are from this early era - 'Seek & destroy' ... 'Fade to black' ... 'Battery' ... 'The Four Horsemen' ... 'For whom the bell tolls'... 'Creeping Death'...
    After Metallica's 4th album 'And justice for all' in 1988, the band opted to make more commercial metal music, which led to the massive success of their 1991 self-titled 'black' album... Metallica is still most famous for their first 5 albums.
    After Metallica's experimental albums 'Load' and 'Reload' in 1996/ '97, the band also recorded a live album 'S&M' in 1999 playing their songs alongside a full classical orchestra.
    Later Metallica albums are somewhat shaky, creatively... They don't release albums as often as their peers like Megadeth, Destruction, Overkill, Testament, etc. but they have a couple of gems like 'Death Magnetic' in 2008 and 'Hardwired to self-destruct' in 2016.

    You didn't give an opinion about the meaning of the song, so allow me...this song is about addiction, with the drug being the master and the user being the puppet. The melodic portion of the song represents being under the influence of the drug, and the song becomes heavier again as the user "comes down" and discovers (again) that it was all a lie.
    FYI, Metallica's members stated in an interview given prior to this album's release that they often wrote songs about things that scared them, so it's no coincidence that you find them scary at times,
    God bless!!

    I was fortunate to grow up with the Big 4!! Anthrax, Megadeth, Metallica and Slayer!! Up until The Black Album I was torn between Megadeth and Metallica.
